I live on the Barataria Island, by the town of Jean Lafitte just south of New Orleans, where the Barataria army lived my ancestors, fought in the battle. The island I live on is named after Jean Lafitte’s pirates/ crew the British called us the dirty shirts
That was the most amazing Battlefield Trust video that I have seen. Wonderful combination of the tour of the American lines followed by the historical interpretation of the British side and overall view of the battle. The team of Chris and Kris is unbeatable! The challenges faced by the British would be repeated, somewhat, by the Union campaigns against Vicksburg. Thank you for this tremendous video.
As a lifelong resident this story is my FAVORITE New Orleans historical story. A very young United States took on the BEST forces in the world at that time…. And we won….. and January 8 was a really big deal until the Civil War. I greatly recommend learning about this entire campaign before, leading up to and when it took place to the aftermath of this battle. It is an amazing American story!!! 🇺🇸💪👍
The British and Americans were also on the the westbank of the river which is lower Algiers. Skirmishes started in early December up till the main battle in January.
One more thing…Kris White makes it sound that wool uniforms will not keep you warm if wet, in fact the opposite is true. When wet wool is heavy but will still keep you warm.
Absolutely love our history of our great country also got a great song out of this battle war sucks but war has to happen in order for us to be stronger & gain power in the world they went down to Mississippi to the Gulf of Mexico
Yes , the telegraph line from UK to USA was decades away and would have prevented the battle. Andrew Jackson not a hero , didn’t become president ! No trail of tears . Telegraph was biggest change in world History, before it We were no faster than Rome. From speed of Horse to speed of light !
Unfortunate the historical reenactment was cancelled for this year. The Battle actually took place over several weeks. In fact, the day after January 8th, the Brits came relatively close to snatching victory from the jaws of defeat on the West bank of the river, several miles away from Chalmette.
Sheer hubris by the British and Gen. Packenham to attack that position. Worse than Picketts charge. You think what they did to the French at Agincourt 400 years before would have come to mind.
Later that year The Duke of Wellington offered an opinion the British should've used the road by the Chef Menteur highway to attack. Easier to move and keep supplied. The Duke lost his friend General Ned Pakenham in the battle.
It was also fought after the end of the War. Javksons Victory assured we kept New Orleans control of the the Mississippi n Louisiana as a State.. Would been most intresting bad had Jackson Lost. Thank God He Didnt...
Those British troops were the very ones who served in Wellington's Army and defeated Napoleon's army during the Peninsula War. Good soldiers poorly used.
This battle which made Old Hickory famous should not have been fought,as the Treaty of Ghent which ended the War of 1812 had already been signed in Europe. The news traveled too slowly to prevent it. Britain had surrendered.
If I have my history right the battle actually happened after a peace treaty had been agreed on and the war was 9:14 technically already over. The cell tower must have been off line.
We fired our guns and the British kept a-comin' There wasnt as many as there was a while ago We fired once more and they began to runnin' On down the Mississippi to the Gulf of Mexico! Yeah, they ran through the bries and they ran through brambles And they through the bushes where a rabbit couldnt go They ran so fast that the hounds couldnt catch 'em On down the Mississippi to the Gulf of Mexico

I've actually been to this battlefield, the River boat cruise was amazing. 10/10 would recommend and do again.
Jackson came down the State Road in Mississippi and some of my cousins that lived along that route joined him.
Yes!!! Finally!!!! War of 1812!!!! Please go to more sites! Try to get to Plattsburgh!!
Beautiful cinematography!
A war you don’t hear about a lot. Thanks 😊
You keep stepping up your game! Beautiful and awe-inspiring.

In 1814 we took a little trip...
R.I.P. Johnny Horton
Nice little park. National cemetery next to it has hundreds of USCT burials in it.
They ran through the briars and they ran through the brimmel and they ran through the bushes where a rabbit couldn't go!
They ran so fast that the hounds couldn't catch em, down the Mississippi to the Gulf of Mexico!
that song is frequently in my head!
And when they lit the powder off the gator lost his mind
Brambles
Chalmette not ChalAmette thanks
Great video tho! Love to hear about the battle of New Orleans.
It hurts each time he said it. Poor park service girl was polite and didn't correct him.
Great lesson thanks.
Very interesting, thank you!!
Very interesting!
"They weren't now as many as there was a while ago . . . "
"...We fired once more and they began a runnin'
Oh down the Mississippi to the Gulf of Mexico"
NOTE You should have put the Johnny Horton song in this video
My 3x great grandfather James McEwen fought with Jackson's army there
Absolutely love our history of our great country also got a great song out of this battle war sucks but war has to happen in order for us to be stronger & gain power in the world they went down to Mississippi to the Gulf of Mexico
Isn't it true that the war was over by the time the battle was fought?

The message hadn’t been received though. Took a long time to get information back then.
Really interesting
What are US casualties in the battle of New Orleans.
Estimated casualties are 62 U.S. and 2,034 British
@ ok thanks.
Old is gold moment
In which year was this originally shown? Interesting --- and many things I didn't know before!
Jackson and his men were absolute Chad's during this battle.

Why was the reenactment cancelled?
@@mjg3272 I heard it was spiking insurance costs and general lack of funding. Its all privately funded.
My gosh man, pronounce Chalmette correctly, you do not have it right even after hearing the ranger pronounce it correctly.
COTTONBALERS BY GOD, DAMN FINE SOLDIERS!!!
I had the honor of serving with the 7th Regiment during DS/DS.
Sheer hubris by the British and Gen. Packenham to attack that position. Worse than Picketts charge. You think what they did to the French at Agincourt 400 years before would have come to mind.
A lot of mispronunciation going on in this video.
It’s not “shallamet” it’s Chalmette. Pronounced shall-met
My gg grandfather is buried there.
The Pirates must have really disliked the British and their high seas spoil-sporting.
Right! Well when your friends and family could very well have been impressed into the British navy at some point you’d be upset too.
Later that year The Duke of Wellington offered an opinion the British should've used the road by the Chef Menteur highway to attack. Easier to move and keep supplied. The Duke lost his friend General Ned Pakenham in the battle.
