    What i hate in game difficulty and design discussions in general is how people who think they are "hardcore gamers" love to call anything that destroys them "artificial difficulty". It's not that the very concept of atifical difficulty is false, but i see it being missused in 9 out of 10 times and it basically comes down to "i didn't understand something about mechanics"/"i was too lazy".
    Funny thing is that this problem is not comming from casuals - they are playing easy mode and even when they try to play hard games - they are more respectful of the game and try first to understand what they are doing wrong. But a self proclaimed "hardcore gamer" often is blinded by thinking he's tough shit and when he get's killed it's always bad game design and not him.

      Ole Gerko Not even gonna lie I think your right XD
      I'm a complete casual and almost never play any game on hard mode but I have a friend (who I love don't get me wrong) that considers himself a very hardcore gamer and ANY time he loses he blames it on artificial difficulty. But he never listens when I point this out cause "I'm just a casual" 😂

    • @D-Havoc
      @D-Havoc 7 лет назад +2

      I don't know if you've played Dark Souls games, but that's the biggest problem with that community of players when it comes to Dark Souls 2. They don't learn the fights or adapt and they call it artificial difficulty just because they lose to it when the game's made the most effort to be as fair as possible with a lot of available items for you to use.

      I think that's a very shallow observation of a type of person you don't like. Playing games on harder dificulty makes the flaws in the gameplay shine because you need every bit of the game to work properly.

  • @highvoltage7559

    I'm glad to see that the Osaka Team is finally learning what made KH2FM's bosses so good. Just spamming dodge and only one attack for few minutes doesn't make for an interesting fight *cough* Mysterious Figure *cough* did they forget Terra even exists while designing this boss *another unconvincing cough*. There's nothing interesting about dodging attacks, if you don't need to think about the way you dodge them. If you can just spam the dodge button forever, then avoiding damage quickly become brainless and it makes the fight a whole lot less engaging. This is why Bayonetta has a dodge reset, why your dodge move in KH1 and 2 doesn't have too many i-frames and they have a bit of recoil at the end of the animation to prevent the player from spamming. Hell, Terra's dodge would've been just fine for Birth By Sleep if they had designed everything with that dodge style in mind. But no, instead you either have a broken dodge, or a dodge that makes some of the fights feel like RNG due to the bosses not being designed with the latter in mind.

    • @SonicFan64Tom
      @SonicFan64Tom 7 лет назад

      no one forces you to only use one attack. You're making the game not fun for yourself if you play the game like that.

    • @highvoltage7559
      @highvoltage7559 7 лет назад +3

      Fairly certain I mentioned that in the context of Mysterious Figure, not the entire game. Although the rest of the "super bosses" also significantly restrict the amount of useful moves as well. They're not good boss fights.
      Also how many moves in general are even useful anyway? Just throw in some magnet and thundaga and basically everything's dead.

    Tbh, I'm not a big fan of the Gamer's Joint. The first few videos I saw by him were fine (though I can't remember what they were about now.) He eventually went clickbaity/really stereotypical stuff (top 10 weapons,top 10 characters, ect) and I was like "Alright, that's fine, I'm down." ... but idk.
    Normally, I'm very open to hearing someone else's opinions when it comes to media as long as they aren't a dick (which he came across as at times.) However, the way he presented his opinions just came off as lazy or not well thought out. It's not his opinion itself that bothered me, but the fact that he didn't even know why he held that opinion, or at least couldn't present it in a coherent way. Plus, like you said, this dude must be making at least some kind of cash making these videos. This is probably his job. How on earth can you feel like you don't have to put effort (aka, playing the game) into your JOB?
    (Plus, he said Aqua was worst girl which is an insult on my life itself. She gave so much for her friends and she's probably the strongest character in the series story wise. I can understand not loving her [if you hate strong, independent women who can kick your insecure ass any day and doesn't need a love interest as her sole motivator to become strong and protect]... but WORST GIRL?!
    Edit: I'M NOT SALTY!)

      Well there was that one time Zack tried to ask her out. She showed her quirks with how embarrassed and awkward she felt at the situation. Totally agree with the points here. And for the record, you can get at least one volley of a shotlock off on this boss after an aerial combo, but you gotta be on-point about it, which I like. It's quite stylish and satisfying if you pull it off for just a little extra damage, not a huge game-breaking chunk of damage.

    I have a love/hate relationship with this fight. The design and effort of this fight is really good, forcing me to learn tactics about what to do in order to defeat her. It did take me 71 tries to defeat her, though. However, the biggest problem I had was how it feels like you don't have options during the fight and you have to do this one pattern to defeat her. Let's say if you wanted to use Spellweaver during the fight, you'll ultimately fail because sure you'll be doing twice as much damage to Aqua, once she dodges you're vulnerable because your attack string has too many frames.

  • @TheRealKingheart

    I hope this becomes the general consensus about this boss and the developers make note of it. Haven't enjoyed a boss fight this much since the superbosses in KH2FM and I began to worry that they'd continue to ignore the mechanics that made KH2 great. 0.2 is definitely a step in the right direction. Side note: Aqua can jump out of her barrier if you block an attack. It gives you the option to create unique openings and land punishes that wouldn't be possible otherwise :)

    Man BestGuyEver you hit the nail on the head. Everything you say about gameplay and how filthy casuals like TheGamersJoint rely on crutches and complain about difficulty is spot on. These fights are supposed to be a challenge and when you beat them you should feel accomplished. Audio queues and mechanics like that make fights so much more engaging. It's supposed to be trial by fire and about learning to use your skills to counter what the boss is doing NOT spamming reflect/guard/roll (unless of course that is the only way to beat the move in which case that was the design choice of the programmers and supposed to be done). God, I want to kiss you almost as much as I want to kiss Aqua. Sorry for the short essay lol.

  • @Noisymedal
    @Noisymedal 7 лет назад +1

    On the topic of Reflect spamming; Yes, I think it can easily be abused, but it can also be designed for.
    During one of the extra bosses in Kingdom Hearts 2 Final Mix the boss lets out an attack that you can't outrun, dodge, or avoid in any meaningful way, you just have to take it... or reflect spam. She never uses this attack twice in a row, in fact, the internal timer between uses of this move is long enough for your mana bar to refill. This leads me to believe that the game Devs wanted you to spam reflect for this move; so that they could limit your reliance of magic, (cure, thunder, reflect, etc.) during the rest of the fight. This forces the player to be much more aware of their mana meter if they want to survive she power combo with reflect.

    The main effect of the trinity system in KH1 is that I had immense difficulty with the Coliseum and basically never played any of it and never got a lot of the optional magic or the trinity you get, missed the ones you get from that and the missable trinity in Halloween Town (because I didn't have that trinity yet), couldn't remember where any of the trinities were when I actually did get the ones you get in the story and in general just playing KH1 makes me paranoid of missing all this crap that has no system to keep track of it. So I think of them as these gates that just never become open. It's like the content beyond them doesn't even exist. I just remember hating trinities so much.

    One counterpoint I'd like to make is regarding your point about revisiting old areas in KH1 for the sake of a satisfying exploration of a previously explored level. Personally, I prefer everything being at my own pace because there are times I can consider forced reentry of old levels being just backtracking, but can understand if you can see the positive in that kind of game design.

    I love the Sephiroth fight in KH2, but for a while, I had trouble beating him on the ps2, for the sole reason I was not used of using magic in the game cuz my button for shortcuts for magic (r1 i think or r2 one of those) did not work on my controller and never switch it or didn't have one so I didn't use the reflect magic, until I got used to going to the reflect spell in the menu. I was pretty dumb, but it was so fun and rewarding when I did beat him just for him to fly away like nothing happen. I love playing proud mode in KH games cuz of the battle systems (most of them), and eventually, I forget I am playing on the hard difficulty and it feels normal to me. I agree with this, every boss has a pattern, just got to find it and adapt to them. Also, the boss fights look so cool when you know how to react to them.

    KH1 is still my favorite entry in the series because of the simplistic charm of it. There's puzzles, exploration, awkward by interesting platforming. There's a real sense of adventure and distinct qualities to the worlds. Every Disney world is tied to the main narrative either thematically or directly. KH2 had worlds that felt more like filler to the actual core story and each world was so flat that any sense of exploration was gone. The best thing about 2 was the combat and the boss battles. The rest was a mess to me.

    This reminds me of when people were bitching about the Nameless King, Gael and Midir from DS3.
    They were bosses that were horribly difficult at first glance, but careful observation and memorization of patterns evened the field and made tooth-grinders into cinematic brawls between gods. Until they got nerfed because shitbabies cried about difficulty.
    Also I kinda like shotlock. Along with flowmotion, it feels like a natural progression of a skill a keyblade wielder naturally has (those being magic and airdashing). It could be better, but it's not terrible and I could see ways to make bosses really interesting with it.

    I love the Force channel but i gotta agree with you here. He really didn't put the effort into learning the boss. heck I wouldn't be shocked if with Sephiroth he used the cheese strategy. (which I tried and failed at using so I ended up just going at it again and again)

    i watch a lot of that guys videos but i agree with you about Phantom Aqua, i had to fight her just as much as you did to get a handle on her. I didn't hate Phantom Aqua at all because i realized that she was basically a taste of boss fights to come in KH3, like you i started to see Phantom Aqua's patterns after a while, it was the same with Lingering Will when i battled him too. Eventually i stopped using Reflega on him and guarded instead. My point is i agree with you, but i kinda like some of his points too, not in this video exactly but he has his pros a lot too.

    found this video recently, i know it's old but i have to say this because i disagree with 1 thing you said, you can use shotlock in this fight but unlike most fights you can only use it(and do any damage) at very small specific moments it was very satisfying for me when i found those moments. i also congratulate the game when he forced me to play this on a lower dificulty just that i could lern how to fight it and not be that much frustraded, when i came back to beat on critical it made me feel so good

    Agreed completely. It feels great to master a game and destroy a superboss. I've been playing a bit of Bloodborne again, and while they aren't superbosses, the regular boss enemies cause me issues because I suck and I'm not used to the speed and aggression that the game asks of you (I'm way too used to Dark Souls 3 and having defensive options). But that's the thing with mastering the game's mechanics, getting used to the boss's movesets, and knowing how to counter it: you feel like a badass when you finally win.
    Also, unless it's stated to be unreasonable by anyone you ask, and I'm talking about a completely unanimous opinion, there's no dignified way to make a case for "make this superboss easier." Because it's a SUPERBOSS. It's supposed to kick your ass until you figure out a counter. And then it kicks your ass some more when it hits phase two. It's going to make you work for that victory.
    That's why "git gud" is a thing.
    When you git gud, you'll feel gud.

    I do have one small complaint about this boss, but it’s less about the boss and more about the circumstances for when you fight it.
    In KH2, I got to the Lingering Will after having played the game for over 80 hours. I had the time needed to level all my drive forms and get Sora to level 99 and to feel like I had mastered the game. Over the course of suffering through the Org. XIII data fights, I had learned some of the more technical aspects of KH2. I got to Phantom Aqua after about 6 hours of gameplay. I was around level 60 and I had no warning about a secret boss even being there. She’s at the end of an incredibly long boss rush, meaning quitting to do some grinding or practice block-jumping or to go open some chests and maybe find an elixir or two is incredibly punishing because you have to fight a fuck ton of enemies to get back to her. Not to mention that grinding at all in this game is like pulling fucking teeth, which sucks ass because multiple objectives are locked behind level grinding. In other words, I felt like I was thrown at Phantom Aqua way too early, which is the consequence of such a short game in general.

    His stats increase and his A.I. changes depending on how many support abilities you have equipped. So the game leads you to try to master tons of commands so that you can keep the support abilities they have when you fuse commands, and then they throw you a boss that is already hard without support abilities that can actually become impossible to beat if you played the game efficiently enough!

    Sounds like someone who wouldn't like Souls games and Bloodborne. It's all about pattern recognition and gradually understanding the boos until it's perfected to an art form, knowing all the options, and what to do in every situation. Making full use of all your options at the most opportune moments, and not just doing whatever the fuck you feel like.
    Anyone who appreciates a good challenge wouldn't be getting mad at a boss like this, because they shouldn't be playing to win, they should be playing to better understand the fight until they have the satisfaction of knowing they can respond to every situation and do it flawlessly.
    I mean, of course, not every fight designed like this is perfect. Some can drag on too long with parts that are easy to master that you have to complete every time to get to stuff that's hard to master, which gets annoying and boring. Some can just simply be unfair, even knowing everything about the fight. And so on...

  • @Michael-lt5hb

    I can explain to you people's issues with the last phantom aqua fight and it is one of my biggest problems with Kingdom Hearts, and video games, today. People have this need to feel like the have mastered a game, and this tends to mean beating the extra bosses and the highest difficulty but they aren't good enough to do so. So Square lowers the bar, or in the case of DDD and 0.2, not allow me to start in my sweet sweet critical mode from the start; Proud mode is too easy and critical mode doesn't have the same fun the second time through. I love the challenge and the need to memorize and figure out patterns, however, this is not for everyone. They complain because they feel like it's too hard or that they are being cheated when its actually the best thing: well designed difficult non-required boss fights. The data org, lingering will, and KH1 Unknown are all good examples of this. I had so much fun trying to do the flawless victory objective (3rd PA with no damage) and I don't want KH3 not force me to do a story only proud mode run before I can have critical!
    PS. Birth by Sleep gets a pass for it's questionable combat but having the best and most tragic story. It really showed that Square was not scared to have deep and emotional stories. Although, screw the unknown fight. That dude honestly made my thumb sore from the endless square mashing needed.

    i wanna say that ive done a lvl 1 play through of final mix + weaboo語 version.
    I think it really brings to light some of the flaws with the combat system in KH2 like for instances recovery frames on certain attacks and abilities(Ex. roll, finishers, landing from jump etc.) . and lack of options for mobility in combat, (roll and dash are the only abilities and they are very stiff, sometimes unresponsive at crucial times) which because of this i have met with many deaths because the game is literally two hits and you are dead. in 90 percent of the engagements. bosses make the latter 10 percent which is way more lenient on mistakes for obvious reasons.
    0.2 i haven't seen someone really show off the combat system and the mobility that can be showcased because ive only seen noob casuals play this demo but i think it has promise, i just wanna see faster more responsive combat and more freedom in evasive tactics. because KH2 was just not designed to be played on lvl 1 on the hardest diff.
    things i'd like to see. animation cancels would be nice to add a deeper layer of combat. ohh maybe different key blades can offer a different style of combat, like heavy atacks and light and mid attacks. magic being used as evasive options instead of just defensive or attack ones. i'd like to see more of what i saw in the Pirates world in KH2 with magic.

    The only real flaw the Phantom Aqua boss fight has, is that it might come off as a bit too "intense" right off the bat, whereas slightly better balanced fights like Sephiroth and LW have a more nuanced difficulty curve. But that's probably because Phantom Aqua was meant to be a shorter fight to begin with.

    so basically us has fans have just been severed boss fights that we thought were hard but weren't because we were always given something that made that fight easier so we could win and feel good about ourselves.
    A another RUclips I watch called Nico B also had the same problems with the fight but I was frustrated because he cheesed a lot of battles and he made me realize that squarenix knows what their doing and their selling us the illusion that we think we are good at games when we're really not.
    SO at the end people are just mad they weren't sold the illusion of wining THIS is the first KH battle where they said OK here is a boss you have no cheese move to rely on good luck and have fun and people didn't like that
    it's kinda like when you feed someone something they love for years and then suddenly change it their not going to be happy about it.

  • @GameSharks
    @GameSharks 7 лет назад +4

    The issue with Phantom Aqua is it always feels like I'm exploiting things. A lot of the stuff you can do to get hits reads like something a speed runner would say to beat a boss extra fast, not to get hits in at all. You can't have to do anything weird to hit the Lingering Spirit. You don't have to bait the AI. Same with the Data Organization fights.
    You CAN exploit them, but that's just more optimal.
    The way they punish guards isn't really an evolution, it's a "haha gotcha" where instead of guarding and countering a move, it has attacks that pierce guard... so you have to spam dodge. An attack that goes against your mechanics needs more conveyance. A wind up or something. The attacks Phantom Aqua uses are just normal attacks but with red. Similarly, If you actually use a counter attack she warps away. You have to do something unintuitive instead, jumping to cancel the animation for a combo.
    Her desperation move is just following a basic pattern. It seems cool at first, overwhelming, but it's not really hard to deal with, it's just not possible at first because each attack requires a very specific counter. That's honestly the problem with the boss as a whole, it's all about following specific patterns a lot. A fight can be simple and difficult. The Lingering Spirit fires an Ultima Canon at you, you counter it with a block, it hits and creates an opening. Simple.
    Frankly, it's concerning you find this fight to be on the same level as the Lingering Spirit, and it's funny that you go on about how this other person needs to do more research before making a video, but keep on going on about how you don't know anything about the guy, his opinions, his channel, or anything.

    • @Firestar-rm8df
      @Firestar-rm8df 7 лет назад +2

      I would agree with you EXCEPT, it's an optional fight for top level players with minimal relevance to the overall story. Compared to lingering will, we already know a lot about aqua and this boss. Players who don't want this are welcome to play on easy and beat the game normally. This is a fight for the type of people that like to play on critical and 100% KH games. It's not like they make you do a level 1 run, or have some weird condition that you need too satisfy preparing for the fight. And if it's still too hard there is this thing called grinding for players that still want to beat it.

Also, most magic doesn't work on him as well, and I'm always seeing people complaining about not being able to use their while arsenal against bosses in their critiques of later games (not that I disagree, I'd say I'm leaning towards agreement, but still). I get KH1 isn't the game that gets praised for combat around here, but I'd still like to understand what the difference is for people.
