Thanks for such an informative gear video guys. Been watching a bit of hiking/camping videos of late (UK & US), so it's refreshing to see/hear from some Aussies for a change. Look forward to going through your previous videos now, especially the Victorian hikes. Cheers!
Super impressive and inspiring - I'm on a journey to ditch some base weight too and your video is so helpful. Thanks for sharing your full gear list :) P.S. Are you missing the stove?
@@LaurenandScott That's great! What are your fave dinners? I think I could manage every meal as a cold soak but I do love cups of tea and coffee. Oh - one more question - is the rain kilt still working out for you? I'm trying to decide between some froggs toggs rain paints or a kilt.
Hey Eve, sorry the answer to your previous question is yes we are missing a stove. But we do love a cold soak! Our favourite dinner is cold soaked instant noodles with a spoonful of peanut butter 👏 we usually eat it with a wrap too! As for our rain set up we don’t use rain pants as legs usually dry pretty well. But absolutely love our rain kilt! Would highly recommend! Easy to put on whilst hiking too which is a big plus!
WOW! You guys are going to rock it this year for sure. You're kits are impressive. I have only one small suggestion to save some grams: swap out the regular ground hogs to the mini ground hogs. I believe the regular size MSR ground hogs are overkill. Maybe use 2 one for each door/vestibule but I think on the AT you have plenty of strength and support with those minis. Your call of course. I am blown away by these kits, I think they will make a HUGE difference on your hikes. Can't wait! Best gear video I have seen in years too! Well done!
Thank you so much Jeff! We will probably end up getting the mini ground hogs once the standard ones need upgrading 👍 We tried to make the video straight to point and made sure we didn’t blabber too much, so your kind words are definitely appreciated 🤗
Hey Evan, we have been busy moving states and getting settled in. We are however heading out for our first overnighter in our new home state today. New video should be up next week and have some exciting things planned for the rest of the year too 👍
If you'd like my advice, since you're using packs made out of a waterproof laminate I'd ditch the S2S compression sacks and use a nylofume pack liner to let the soft stuff occupy nooks in the bottom portion of your backpack that are otherwise created by the shape of the compression sacks. I'd also pack all your stuff in the order in which you're going to deploy it and you won't need stuff sacks pretty much at all.
Yes pretty much exactly the same! Currently on a thru hike in France. We are carrying a stove and an extra t-shirt and shorts this time but that’s the only difference. So a tad heavier!
Really loved the video!! So easy to follow which is amazing! We are considering the ZPacks Duplex for our thru-hiking tent. What made you choose the Triplex over the Duplex?
Thanks guys, glad you liked it! We highly recommend the ZPacks tents! We opted for the triplex as the weight difference between it and the duplex is quite minimal and we really wanted enough room to bring our bags inside 😊
One of the lightest, warmest, most versatile tops is the Macpac Nitro, polartec Alpha hoody. Worth looking at. The Patagonia Houdini has low air permeability, The Patagonia Houdini Air is better.
We ordered them from the US and got them shipped over. Our Zpacks review video goes over the costs associated with bringing the tent in to Australia if you are interested 👍
Hi Chris, Thankyou! Our Tier Gear quilts are absolutely the greatest. We cannot speak high enough of the quality of the quilt and also the service at Tier Gear. We are actually going to do a review video of these very soon, so stay tuned!
Hey Lauren and Scott, just discovered this video and your channel through the magic that is the RUclips algorithms. I've just started getting into backpacking and been doing heaps of research on what gear to get started with as beginner. I must say, you guys have a done an incredible job at scaling down your gear from what it was last year before the AT - great work! I've saved this video and this will pretty much be my 'dream list' for the gear to work towards. Great video, and you have yourself a new Subscriber! Do you have any tips or resources you can point me to for someone new to hiking and wanting to learn the ropes + good info on easy trails to get started on? Hi, and greetings to you from Melbourne also. 👋🏼 ~Vu
Hi Vu, what a lovely comment to receive! Thankyou for enjoying our videos, we’re happy that you found them too! We’re super happy with where our gear has gotten also, a huge huge change from not only before we left for the AT, but when we originally started hiking! We found The Hiking Life blog is great, he does talk abit about some Australian trails and has great insight on gear! The best thing to do when you’re starting out is to just start! Every time you hike you’ll learn something new, be it gear or something else! We would definitely recommend starting on the great ocean road hike, the campsites are excellent and very easy/achievable distances between them 😊😊 You’ll have to let us know how you go 😎 good luck, and happy trails 🥳
@@LaurenandScott That’s awesome, thank so much you for passing on those recommendations. This is what I love about the hiking community already, everyone’s so open to sharing and learning from each other! I’ll definitely be sinking my teeth into that blog, and will start researching and planning a future hike at the great ocean road. I hope you guys continue to make videos! Enjoy all the hikes now that we’re able to move about freely again. 🤗 Stay awesome! ~Vu
Our pleasure, the hiking community really is amazing!! We have lots planned in the near future Vu, we have recently moved to Tassie, so lots of new trails to explore 👌 Good luck with the planning of the great ocean road hike, let us know if you need any help!
Hi Burzum, we are coming out with a new video shortly. We moved states her in Aus so got caught up with getting back into the swing of work ect. We have some gear reviews and hiking videos on the way! Thanks for hanging in there!
Huge difference from initial base weight. I am wondering if you have actually taken your kit and field tested. I like how organized your video is, one of the best thst I have seen 👍
Really good gear list. But, you're delusional if you think that compression bandage is enough to sufficiently treat a snake bite. I would strongly suggest taking 3. As someone who has had to treat a person for a snake bite, I cannot stress the importance of carrying some decent compression bandages and a PLB.
Thanks Rowan, we’re always making little changes to our first aid kit so we’ll keep it in mind! And we’d definitely take a PLB if we were headed out for a long remote thru hike. Thanks for the tips!

One of the best videos of these type and you are Aussies (with Aussie brands).
Thank you!

Nope!! We went to cold soak and we still do 💪

I can't imagine cold soaking. Its so cold 🥶 in the Canadian rockies warm meal is a must.
Fair Evan! Some climates would most definitely call for a warming dinner!
@@LaurenandScott what happened to you guys? No trips lately?

@@LaurenandScott is state in Australia similar to a province like we have here in canada?
Yes thats right Evan 😊 we moved to a state in Australia that’s actually an island off the mainland and is great for hiking 👍
This is really helpful as a fellow aussie thanks guys
We’re glad we could help! No worries mate ☺️
What an amazing evolution! Well done guys! Love your set-up.
Yess love some ultralight. So nice skipping along the trail. Great vid.
This looks amazing guys! Can't believe you cut down so much weight with those great bags, good job!
Definitely Pa’lante for the win 😊
Patiently waiting for more of your videos lol great gear list!
Great video on ultralight. I would try something like that except for New Hampshire and Maine.
Spot on Jim

Nice. Sub ten pound base weight. I too use a windshirt instead of a fleece mid layer. Works well fir me. Are you still setup this way?
Yes pretty much exactly the same! Currently on a thru hike in France. We are carrying a stove and an extra t-shirt and shorts this time but that’s the only difference. So a tad heavier!
Impressive! In our weather conditions I prefer a completely 2-layer tent, which adds 400 g to the weight. Don’t you use any burner for cooking at all?
No stove at all. All cold soaked meals 😝
Well done guys great informative gear list - you've really dialled it back !!
Thanks Lisa! We sure have. It’s been great. Have been able to cover some big kms on trail 👏
Do you guys like the sleeping bag liners? I always worry i would get tangled up in it. Silk? Nylon? No tangle liner? Thanks! Hike on!
We use a silk one to keep the quilt as clean as possible 👍
Nicely trimmed, well done. Where did you pick up those packs from ... very nice! Also, completely agree with the squeeze over the mini filter!
From Palante Packs online 👍 - yes the normal squeeze is really good 😌
🙏
Did i miss the shelter they were using,or is it not in the video?
Hi Bima, our shelter is the Zpacks Triplex. It is in the video around the 4 minute mark 👍
