The EVLV is the backpack I didn’t know that I was waiting all my life for. I didn’t think it could be possible that a pack can carry 20lbs so comfortable and stable without a hip belt, I feel zero weight on my shoulders. Outstanding job on this design Darwin.
Great to meet you this afternoon, out in my "backyard" - the beautiful Aska wilderness area near Blueridge, Ga. Have enjoyed your videos and all of your good advice. Enjoy the rest of you Benton McKaye hike.
Thanks again Darwin for another in depth packing list, in my opinion, these are the highest quality hiking gear lists on RUclips. You have once again helped me put together my packing list for a trip, this time, a section of the AT in Pennsylvania. I really appreciate all the attention to detail, time, and effort you put into creating these professional quality videos. You rock!!
Good stuff, of note is the BRS micro/ultralight stove: It's a GRRREAT stove!!! I bought mine right about when it went on the market and I have used it CONSTANTLY and CONSISTENTLY ever since, and it has NEVER faled or faltered even ONCE the entire time!!! For context, I'm a WILDERNESS hiker (not a distance hiker) so I go into the backcountry for weeks or months at a time and I go to ALL types of terrain and in ALL types of weather. Even when I'm not hiking, I'll take it to a local city park to make coffee, tea, soup, etc. Again, it has NEVER failed or faltered!!! Limited ability nay-sayers will say it's overly sensitive to wind or they point to junk science by junk scientists on RUclips. ALL open-flame canister stoves are susceptible to wind, and the BRS is no exception. However, you are SUPPOSED to put your stove (or fire, for that matter) in a protected situation and I do just fine with my set up, as I'm sure you do. Another nay-sayer gripe is that the flame "overheats" the pot holders. What they DON'T say (or do right) is you're NOT supposed to turn the flame to high! It wastes fuel and is completely unnecessary!! There are MANY other gripes by people who don't know what they're doing (or talking about) but suffice to say micro stoves like the BRS are not for everyone (or noobs!). Just use 'best practices' and you'll agree, this is a GREAT stove!!!!
The first time I went car camping I carried about 50 lbs of crap. Love these videos because they show the things you "absolutely" must have. Everything else is basically a luxury. I don't travel nearly as light as Darwin, but he shows a really good baseline.
Darwin I think you might just be the best person in RUclips backpacking. Everyone else is doing nothing but stale old top 10s and gear reviews. And while you are doing similar sorts of videos you keep trying to make the videos more fun.
Darwin ... another great video. Loved the quick photo bomb at the beginning. Good luck on the trail. I’ve wandered parts of the BMT, so I’m really looking forward to seeing the whole thing.
As someone preparing for my first long through hike, your list of supplies was very thorough and complete, from walking stick to bidet (didn't know this last existed). Thank you
Thanks Darwin, great vid. Have fun on your trip. I just got back from my first long (just shy of 70 miles) hike... Backbone Trail in California. You are one of my huge inspirations for that trip. Keep on trekkin'!! 🤠
Just putting my gear together for a 10-12 trip (without option to re-stock) and struggling with that gradual creep. Nice to get a refresher on how hard you have to slash 😊
If you need a resupply, shuttle, or anything else let me know! My wife works about 3 miles from mile 110 (Childers creek) and I fly fish that river most weekends! Gorgeous trail!
Hey Darwin 😊Thanks for the work you do. I’m an older hiker and your videos helped me to be comfortable with packing what suited me, not the shoulds, lol. We’re planning on thru hiking the Ozark Hilands Trail this fall, can’t wait to get on trail again!
I’m so happy to see you’re doing this trail. Hopefully some good videos to follow. I’ve been obsessed with this trail for the last couple years, as it’s close (I’m in Atlanta), and I feel it’s something I may be able to do while holding down a full time career. Looking forward to your videos!
I’ve been building up stamina and endurance using Cameron Park in Waco Tx after work! Spent 2.5 hours non stop taking the river trail all the way down the brazos river and then hiking the Highlander trail all the way back and detouring at the drain pipe (looks clear might try the sawyer out there) back into the river trail on my way out after the sun sets. Hopefully I can take on some of the Guadalupe Trail this year. My gear: Nike Challenger 7”, Magellan spf sun shirt, cheapest ASICS trail shoe at Academy, an Armytek Wizard headlamp ( you might like / need one Darwin ) , and a Peanut Butter Raisin Tortilla roll I stuffed in my right pocket that every dog being walked on the trail smelled from 30 yards away 😃.
Real excited, I’m doing a weekend backpacking trip on the knobstone trail, deam a lake to just past mile 8. Also did you know that guy out did he just walk past and pass a look of judgment😂😂?
New hiker hear: I was kiss whelmed on how to pack my pack (sounds silly i know ) but your pack videos really help me understand. I know this is silly but my first hike I almost forgot a towel and storage / garbage bags. You usually don’t see people include that stuff on basic gear lists. Thanks for your work !
I liked the changes to the gear set up presentation. Animations, etc.... I have to learn from the experts how to keep improving. Getting ready to hit the Buckeye trail here in a couple weeks. Thanks again.
Hey Darwin, love the videos =) Question for you: while long through hikes and long baxk packing trips, how does one only use 1-2 changes of clothes. Like for example this trip you have your first set and a backup set with an extra pair of socks. Do you wash this mid trip? I just imagine sweat builds up no matter how much ventilation you have, dirt, grim. How do you deal with this? Thank you in advance =)
Enjoy the BMT. Nice presentation of gear. I was trying to figure out how to do my gear that I’m taking on the AT. Not sure if I can figure out the voice over though.
Darwin, long time listener, first time caller. I love backpacking but really struggle with sleeping comfortably. I am a side sleeper and need something really cushy and comfortable. I want to hike lightweight, but I am willing to splurge BIG TIME on the weight of my sleeping pad. I want bulletproof sturdiness and very thick for comfort. I am 6' and probably need something on the wider side because i thrash in my sleep. Price is no object, I need to sleep comfortably or Im miserable. Thank you for any input!!!
1. Wish you added info on which food you planned to bring along. 2. How often/where would you would be able to recharge your electronics? *sidenote: so you dont carry any gps items, so you cant "press a button to call for help via satalite, in a emergency situation"?
I would love you to do a series on week long hikes. That's really about how long I can be gone at a time. Where would you go if you had a 9-5 job, could leave the Friday of one week and have to return by the following Sunday (call it 10 days or 9.5 days). What are some section hikes you could hit. For instance, I'm headed over to Gila Forest to hike with my son over his Spring Break with one hard day of travel on each end. I guess the question would be, what are the best 5-7 days hiking trips which you can complete in that time (depending on how many miles one can do in a day - I do about 12-15 myself). Don't care if it's a loop or an end to end.
Love it! Would you help me with a conundrum though? I’m debating between my neoair xlite women’s and my neoair uberlite for my pct 21 thru. I’ll be pairing either pad with an enlightened equipment enigma custom 950 fp 20 degree long/wide quilt and full patagonia cap air baselayers.
Good run down of gear and have fun on your trip! Question for you. In the past you have used the Peak Designs shoulder clip for your camera and it the last couple of videos you have been using a shoulder pocket. I'm curious on your thoughts on the advantages/disadvantages of each system. Are you plugging and unplugging the Rode mic every time. you take it in and out of the pocket? Thanks!
Thanks ... I was thinking it might be the shoulder pouch from Waymark since they make his EVLV pack, but it actually looks a lot more like the shoulder pouch made by SWD (www.swdbackpacks.com/product-page/removable-lycra-shoulder-pouch)
I loved the Altra Temp 1.5 as well, it was my favorite shoe by far and been searching ever since they were discontinued without much luck. But I was excited to see the new Altra Lone Peak 5.0 just come with lots of modifications and I tried on a pair....and happy to say they now feel very Temp 1.5 like to me! I never really liked the Lone Peaks before but love these. Maybe you should try a pair and see if they are a decent replacement for you as well. Happy hiking!

Loved the videobomb comedic addition. These little extras you're putting in lately are lots of fun. Thank you for the extra effort.
Glad you like them! Just mixing it up lately!
@@DarwinOnthetrail speaking of the videobomb, he looked extremely familiar. Somebody we all might know?

Greetings from Russia. I learn English from your videos
I recommend "Binging with Babish" - very clear speaker, food related vocabulary, with common idiomatic phrases.
Beautiful!
I can’t even learning English as a second language, English is f&$king confusing
@@anorak_2902 English is my only language; it is confusing to me as well.
Great to see that your gear doesn't change much and remains very simple. Looking forward to your upcoming videos of this hike.

I like the plugitin cameo! Enjoyed seeing the both of you in each other’s stories this week. Have fun!
He’s a great friend!
I love the relaxing jazz music in the background. It's very cozy.
So stoked hiking season is right around the corner, great setup.
whats a hiking season?? lol.. jk

Thanks for the gear load out. Nice job getting your baseweight as low as possible especially for a winter trip. Good luck on your hike!
Great video! Would love to see what you are bringing for food on this trail.
Same as it ever was...
With a base weight that low you'll be able to carry way more delicious Bud Light! That's a win/win, right there!
Another great video.. we do appreciate all the little extras you do .. ! Amazing 👏
Keep up the good work ..
Thanks! Glad you dig em’!
Camera quality is looking great Darwin! Appreciate you putting me onto new gear. Good luck on the trail.
I'm hitting the BMT/AT loop this fall and putting my gear together, so this is getting me hype as hell.
Really digging your podcasts lately! I drive a ton for work and glad I can add your episodes to my podcast rotation. Love the discussion topics.
As someone preparing for my first long through hike, your list of supplies was very thorough and complete, from walking stick to bidet (didn't know this last existed). Thank you
