Dan, the OR down hat you mentioned is actually called the OR Transcendent Down Beanie...I've had one for ages and love it for sleeping in or for sitting around on cold mornings. It's available in two colours but it always sells out very quickly in black so like like me you have the more common forest green version. Also, I think you will find that the best warmth to weight ratio of any sleeping bag belongs to one of both of the Rab Mythic Ultra's...The Mythic Ultra 180 (The one I use) is a 30'F sleeping bag that only weighs 400g (14oz)! And the Mythic Ultra 360 is a 17.6'F sleeping bag that only weighs 600g (21oz)! As you will expect, they are not cheap, but they have come down in price since I bought one...I paid nearly £500 for my 180! The 360 used to be close to £700, but I have now seen them going for as little as £450, if you shop around, and believe it or not the 180 is now more expensive than the 360! Probably because of it's ultralight weight. They both have a high tech heat reflective silver Titanium coating inside which reduces the need to use so much Down, which in turn makes them lighter than conventional bags without this coating.

Loved it. I’m 6’9” tall though and a lot of gear I get is completely based on size. I went with the Paria Arches for example instead of the Lanshan just because of the difference in length. Sleeping bag, and sleeping pad same thing. I’m still looking for backpacking clothes for my size, and just bought the zpacks Arc Blast because they carried a backpack for my extremely tall torso length. I barely fit into anything I have but I make it work lol. I’m at the end of the scale for anything related to backpacking. Thanks for all the info on some of the gear you’re using, as I’m in the market for a new rechargeable headlamp and I think I can easily afford a $65 one if it works well, and has a red light setting.
@@ppaul2246 I bought the Paria Arches 2 person trekking pole tent. I wish it was a few inches longer to be honest. I bought the sea to summit sleeping pad, it’s the longest one I could find at the time. I use the Eolus 15 degree sleeping bag and again, it’s just long enough and I wish it was a few inches longer. I also wear a size 16 shoe, and just bought the Altra Lone Peak 7’s last week and love them!
Dan, I tried several expensive modern style packs and never settled on one I liked. I went back to my beloved old school alice pack. Yep, the ones from the old days with the exposed aluminum frame. There was a catch though. I found a company in the northeast called The Hidden Woodsmen that do several different style packs and supporting gear. They make all their gear in house, and are a veteran owned/operated company. They do what they call a tropical ruck pack that completely replaces the alice pack, kidney belt, and shoulder straps onto your frame using all modern materials and buckles/hardware. The kidney belt is much more padded and larger, the shoulder straps are as well, and adjustment is easy. I load this thing down with 35 to 40 pound and it doesn’t feel like I’m carrying near that much. The belt loads the weight on my hips so well that my shoulders are only keeping the load balanced. Nothing is touching my back, there is literally three or four inches between most of my back and the pack. I hate how most packs sweat me to death. I would love for you to do a test and review on a piece of old school gear like this, but be careful. You might like it too much! Check it out at risk of it becoming a favorite part of your collection. At less than $300 bucks, it’s not going to be wasted money I promise.
Back in the days, I went on a mountain with my worn out running shoes, jeans, T-Shirt and a thick branch as a walking stick and it worked, altough it wasn´t an ideal setup. After I experienced that my tight jeans torn apart (what brought my on an awkward situation) I´ve decided to invest in proper clothes and also gears...experiences makes you buy the right things; boredom the luxury things, which you don´t really need...
I live in the Alps and i own a Samaya Tent since a year now. It‘s the best 4-Season Tent i have ever used. It‘s much better then the Hilleberg Unna and i love the additional vestibule. This year Samaya presents the „Radical“ Line. This Tent weight only 7oz, but i cost 1.600$ 🙈
Dan, I think my husband has you beat on the sleeping bag, LOL! He just got a custom Feathered Friends Flicker Wide/Long Sleeping Bag/Quilt, 10 degree bag (4 oz overfill). Original price was $629 but since it was a return (never used), the nice people at FF offered it to him for the same price as my FF Flicker Wide/Regular at $519! What a deal. He sleeps cold so the fact that the return was a 10 degree bag and the Flicker only goes down to a 20 degree bag, he really scored. We can't see spending over $5K on backpacking gear but a great sleeping bag is a must no matter what the price. Some things you can't put a price on. 😄
This was a fun video. Tents are a strange product. I had a 1 person and fairly light. I went into REI and they showed me a 2 person tent that was lighter. I bought it and it takes under 3 minutes to set up. I really do not think 2 people could sleep in it; but still roomier than my 1 person.
I thought my loadout was modest but this loadout makes mine look downright cheap! Backpack = $220 (Granite Gear Blaze 60) Tent = $160 (Naturehike Mongar 2) Sleeping Bag = $180 (Nemo Disco 15) Misc = ~ $190 (poles, pad, utensils, stove etc…) Total = ~ $750
About the Samaya tents: you didn't mention it's a single wall tent, which makes it a decent bit more roomy than other models for that weight. (Unless you go to trekking pole tents but than you give up some other features). The Dyneema is much stronger than thin nylon tents of similar weight and the samaya doesnt gather condensation on the inside, despite being single walled. I worked at a store where we got a few of these to test out, and they did deliver on what they promised. I'd never spend that much on a tent, but it is a very durable, strong, all weather tent with plenty of space for a light weight.
I use the heavier 1P & 2P models from Hilleberg for above tree line (Soulo and Staika), and I love the greater protection from snowstorms with their double walls, but I'd like to get my hands on the Samaya3.0 for a lager and lighter 2 person setup in similar conditions to see how it rocked...I'm sure it lives up to its name and price point, but I still love me those heavy double walls :)
Emit is a great edition to the channel. I love how you can just play off him. Creates a more pleasant viewing experience. Oh and has anyone ever told you that you look like John Krasinski?
I hiked this trail last year with a couple of buddies and took a "shortcut". While it did shorten our arrival time, the trail on the shortcut disappeared, there was no way back due to some technical sections, and we were pretty lost for a while lol.
Not going to lie - that tent looked pretty sweet! I take issue with the MSR tent pegs. I stepped on one once and it punched through my Crocs and almost into my foot. Would have been a real emergency. I don’t like the sharp head and I replaced mine with the aluminum hook shaped ones.
I came so close to spending $600 for that sleeping bag. So very, very close. The fabric is so soft. The loft is so fluffy. I'm still tempted... Maybe in a few years
I bought 3 zero degree bags from outdoor vitals at great price several years ago. I remember when they first started advertising their slogan was “ affordable outdoor gear “ . I know it’s hard to keep costs down but they’re just as expensive as everyone else and even more . So my question is what happened to the affordable gear company?
Nice packing for Samaya tent. I have Hilleberg, also super expensive and heavy by today’s standards. Thanks for splashing out for us on expensive backpack. I did drop a tear when you looked at backpack and said it was pretty epic… : )
I just saw the super expensive osprey at a local outfitter - I was getting the osprey exo fitted to me and saw it - when the person helping me told me it was $700 - I didn't even touch it. I do like that $1000 tent
As someone who sells both, if you were getting fitted for an Exos I wouldn’t have bothered to recommend an UNLTD since the use and class of bag is quite different. If you’re in that superlight category of backpack, you’ll be far more satisfied and save about $500 for weight upgrades elsewhere in the kit to better enjoy the trail.
Would be interesting to see a spreadsheet of the two setups with prices and weights totaled for comparison. For example, Dan Emmet Tent Samaya $1,100 3 lb 2 oz Bryce1p $145 2 lb 15 oz (the Samaya is a 2p, equivalent Bryce is $165 3 lb 7 oz) Pack Osprey ULTD $700 5 lb 8 oz OV Shadowlight $199 1 lb 15.5 oz Bag WM Versalite $650 2 lb 2 oz OV quilt $315 1 lb 12 oz Totals for big three: $2,450 10 lb 12 oz $659 6 lb 12.5 oz Emmet's gear weighs 4 lbs less and cost $1,791 less. Shows you that price is not always a good indicator, depending on your needs. The most overweight and overpriced piece of Dan's gear is the Osprey pack, depending, again on your use. I have an ancient Gregory pack, from back when they were still their own company and made in the US, it is heavy, will carry a really heavy load (like 100 lbs), and is just a bomb proof expedition pack. But it weighs about 8 lbs.
I believe the Montbell 1000 plasma down puffy is the most expensive on the market. Love my MHGW and just got a EE Torrid which weighs about the same but synthetic and just as warm. If money were no object I’d like to order Montbell to test it out. Don’t own anything arcteryx simply because it’s $$$$ but sometimes it’s better to buy once cry once.
Hilleberg Tents are the best of the best by far but with massive price tags! Some of their tents cost twice as much or more than the Samaya Tent featured in this video. Hilleberg Tents have been used as Mount Everest base camp tents!
Yeppers your my teacher as well getting reacquainted with camping gear to make a bug out bag for my daughter and of course hiking as well still the best I’ve chosen among my go to people!!!!
Osprey makes an excellent pack, but $700? I use the Osprey Atmos AG 50, and I have no doubts that it carries just as well as that one for a third of the price
Also in general I feel this setup is only realistic if you literally don't have to care about money. Even if the average person saved up for it you would constantly worry about stuff happening to it, whether that be wear and tear or theft on the trail. I don't want to have to be gentle with my gear.
@@caseychaffin5445 Exactly, which is why I said there’s no appreciable gain with the extra cost. Hyperlite Mountain Gear is cheaper than the Atmos and a better, lighter pack anyways. This $700 Osprey deal is simply dumb.
New to the channel and loving it. Funny note: without the title/description this just seemed like a pompous flex on Emmit. Other than that, great videos.
All of this stuff is for people who can afford the best of the best, cost no object. It is definitely nice, but also definitely not needed to have a great time on the trail. Great video!
Not necessarily all of this stuff, but most. The tent stakes for example are a bit pricey, but at 25 bucks for 6 still affordable enough for most people. If your tent costs 300 bucks, might as well spend the 50 for these stakes (they're absolutely great, love them). The rain jacket is also not on the top end of the spectrum, still relatively affordable (230 bucks is a lot of money, but quite a few people will spend this much on their rain jacket).
My backpacking tent cost me $60 and weighs less than 3 pounds. $60! I’ve taken it to the wind river range in Wyoming, the Smokies (twice), and Rim Country in Arizona.
AN $1100 TENT?! For that much I should walk into camp and a concierge should show me to the tent which is already setup for me. WOW! The total is insane.
One of the packs I run was probably close to 700.00 when I bought it close to 10 years ago. It's a Kifaru timberline 2 with a duplex frame. 7000ci and built to carry a lot of weight, 130+ lbs and I've pushed it to 100+ pounds more times than I care to admit. It's a lot of pack for a lot of money designed for a particular job and it's worth every penny.
How far would you want to go with that much weight? And how much to you weigh? For reference I weigh around 140lbs so doubling my weight feels like an incredibly stupid thing to do.
Hyperlite Mountain Gear the Shell rain jacket. $475. Still have mine. Wish we could get enough people to demand they remake them. I’ve had it since 2018 and it’s still going. So, in my opinion, you buy nice things and take care of them, they’ll last forever.
I could see spending $1,100 for that tent due it’s weight alone, motorcycle camping weight is everything. I found a cheaper $75 tent at Dick’s sports good’s that is 5lbs but it looks super flimsy. Even look at Decathlon tent on sale from $119 to $60 it weighs 10lbs. Every ounce saved on motorcycle camping trips is amazing. I need to look into getting those steaks too?? Do those steaks work well in hard tough clay South Texas say sandy Loam soil w/o buckling/twisting & bending up like older aluminum steaks?
Alright if you don’t have an Arc’teryx rain coat you definitely don’t have the most expensive rain coat. 😂 Great video though, a lot of fun seeing you use these gear on one of my all time favorite trails. 🎉
Well if I was through hiking and going to live with a back pack for a year or so your experience with this pack might make it worth the price. Granted there are good/great packs… but the “best pack I ever used.” Might be worth it if you are carrying it for a while and can afford it..
Cheap tent with a great sleep system. No problem. Cooking pots and pans cheap but light no worries. Cheap headlamp for short trips. ok. Backpack depends on your load / distance. My pack is probably 80lbs. Backup of a backup of a backup. Tasmanian Tiger Range Pack MK II
I did a double take on the Leatherman PS4 since I have one sitting in front of me on my desk. $40 at the moment, I paid $25 years ago so I was like wait what. No surprises here to me. The cook kit was a good one to point out. Easy to go cheap there and still have the same functionality. I always advise people not to cheap out on their sleep system. And invest in a good pack and shelter. My pack was like $145 and the shelter was like $138. The shelter was a great deal for a 4 season setup (used in all 4 from 17°-70°) weighing just over a pound. You don't have to spend a fortune to get a decent setup and get out there in most cases.
Whatever listing they found that had the ps4 at $140 had to either be a typo in the price (someone accidentally typed a 1 in front of $40) or a vendor that seriously overpriced it, which is something I've seen on stuff a few times on Amazon.
I am a backpack hunter. It is funny how often people really "stay in their lanes" on the gear that they buy. Honestly more often than not, I am looking at backpacking sites, watching backpacking videos, and buying BACKPACKING gear...for my hunting trips. My tent, pad, bag, poles, cook system, water system...its all the same stuff any backpacker would buy. Big Agnes, REI, Leki, Jetboil, Sawyer mini.....The only real differences are I need to bring a gun, binos, rangefinder, kill kit, game bags, tripod, spotting scope...all of which adds weight so ultimately its MORE important I'm dialed in on the "what not to bring" list. The reason I bring it up is because Dan here says he bought the ULTIMATE, most expensive bag for backpacking. The XL is 5lb8oz and 67 liters. And Osprey has it listed at $700 (admittedly not sure if you can buy it cheaper elsewhere..just hear me out...). Stone Glacier, a reputable, top shelf hunting pack company, sells a 96!!!!!!! Liter pack, thats 5lbs8oz, for $670. And the SG has the ability to separate from the frame for packing meat but really you can put a bag of whatever you want in the meat shelf if you're into backpacking and not hunting. A total volume of over 8000 cu in. I think everyone gets my point by now...I would HIGHLY recommend shopping around, "outside the traditional channels". There is a TON of ultralight gear that myself and other hunters use, that would serve the backpacking community SO well. Stone Glacier sells fantastic, top shelf ultralight products that are designed to be ridden hard. Kuiu also sells ultralight stuff for the alpine sheep hunters..those guys are hardcore backpackers at heart...
Michael, I got my favorite windbreaker from a hunting gear site. Combined with a hoodie from the same site, it fits under a pack to provide excellent wind protection and water resistance. I was considering an alpaca hoodie (>$150) but picked up the windbreaker/hoodie combo for
As one of the very few humans who has tested that backpack, does the extra weight helps you get more comfort? And is the comfort in this pack worth the extra pounds? That $700 Osprey backpack weights 5.5 pounds, some of the most expensive ultralight backpacks (in the $350 plus range) weight under two pounds. So I'm curious.

Hey Kris, I'm 6'8 and would be very curious to know your load out! Tent, Matress, tent, etc! Thanks
Seems like this pack is discontinued now. Kind of a shame, I'd like to have a modern alice pack.
As always, another fantastic video - good info, good pace, good dialog 🙂. And thanks for all of the links! Hope you guys had a great backpack.
You missed the GPS communicator subscriptions. Device $400. Max plan $65/month. Minimum just for SOS functions is $12/month.
It was great running into you and Emmitt on the Lost Creek Trail. Again, your advice on sleeping set ups has changed my hiking life!
Great meeting you as well!! Hope your hike was great!!
I slept as well in my FF as at home. Totally worth it IMO.
@@ericpmoss Me too! It will replace my FF Penguin 10 degree bag as my favorite sleeping bag/quilt!
This was a fun video. Tents are a strange product. I had a 1 person and fairly light. I went into REI and they showed me a 2 person tent that was lighter. I bought it and it takes under 3 minutes to set up. I really do not think 2 people could sleep in it; but still roomier than my 1 person.
The Bryce tent is missing from the list in the actual video 1:20
I thought my loadout was modest but this loadout makes mine look downright cheap!
Backpack = $220 (Granite Gear Blaze 60)
Tent = $160 (Naturehike Mongar 2)
Sleeping Bag = $180 (Nemo Disco 15)
Misc = ~ $190 (poles, pad, utensils, stove etc…)
Total = ~ $750
"is it worth it? .... Definitely not!" Lol! How much I would love to see this sort of honesty in politics and mainstream media.
Great video. This is one of my newest fave channels.
I love this trail. The campsite across from Harmonica Arch is outstanding!
I came so close to spending $600 for that sleeping bag. So very, very close. The fabric is so soft. The loft is so fluffy. I'm still tempted... Maybe in a few years
Bought my grandson Western Mountaineer bag for his AT hike and I use it now. Love it
I bought 3 zero degree bags from outdoor vitals at great price several years ago. I remember when they first started advertising their slogan was “ affordable outdoor gear “ . I know it’s hard to keep costs down but they’re just as expensive as everyone else and even more . So my question is what happened to the affordable gear company?
And it's made in China gear at that and still as expensive as the US made gear
I was literally just out there backpacking this weekend!!
Fantastic video, Dan!! Love the way you did this
Hey Dan, Awesome video, as usual. Please do a review on the Zoleo satellite communicator. It is half the cost on the I reach mini. Thanks!
Thoroughly enjoyed this video. Just fantastic Dan.
Love that a helinox chair was on the budget list 🤣 men after my own heart
Would be interesting to see a spreadsheet of the two setups with prices and weights totaled for comparison.
For example, Dan Emmet
Tent Samaya $1,100 3 lb 2 oz Bryce1p $145 2 lb 15 oz (the Samaya is a 2p, equivalent Bryce is $165 3 lb 7 oz)
Pack Osprey ULTD $700 5 lb 8 oz OV Shadowlight $199 1 lb 15.5 oz
Bag WM Versalite $650 2 lb 2 oz OV quilt $315 1 lb 12 oz
Totals for big three: $2,450 10 lb 12 oz $659 6 lb 12.5 oz
Emmet's gear weighs 4 lbs less and cost $1,791 less.
I had paria Bryce 1p tent year ago and I liked so much. So light and compact with a lot of room. Only downside is front porch its quite small.
I love your attitude. You remind me so much if John Krasinski. Height and build and humour.
Just found your channel, loving the content keep it up!
If you want the warmest jacket get the old Army smokers jackets. Very cheep and they can make winter feel like summer
Love the video (especially the sarcasm).
Im never going camping but i love watching these vids
What is the red Patagonia jacket model at 1:02?
I believe the Montbell 1000 plasma down puffy is the most expensive on the market. Love my MHGW and just got a EE Torrid which weighs about the same but synthetic and just as warm. If money were no object I’d like to order Montbell to test it out. Don’t own anything arcteryx simply because it’s $$$$ but sometimes it’s better to buy once cry once.
I am convinced Osprey invented this $700 backpack specifically to sell to social media reviewers. If it was really an anti gravity device, I'd pay.
It absolutely is worth it for the Osprey. The Katadyn befree filters are trash. I always get a little pinhole leak after about 30 fills
Awesome video thanks Dan and Emmit!!
Love your videos, this is a great comparison!
I agree. I don’t see how this pack could outperform appreciably over the Atmos.
@@SophisticatedDogCatto get things 90% perfect is cheap it’s going over that is where it gets really expensive. Get slightly better cost another 100
@@caseychaffin5445 Exactly, which is why I said there’s no appreciable gain with the extra cost.
Hilltop Packs is my jam! This was a pretty awesome video, Dan! Not sure I'd spring for the tent or pack but it's super cool to see the Cadillacs!
I have an osprey atmos AG 65 pack. That system is incredible. Feels like nothing on your back. But mine was half the price.
Oh man I have done that trail many times. Love it
AN $1100 TENT?! For that much I should walk into camp and a concierge should show me to the tent which is already setup for me. WOW! The total is insane.
So many youtubes of various subject are folks bragging about overspending an/or being over equipped.
Got mine used in great shape , for about half price . Crazy stoopid 👀expensive. 🤷🏼♂️idk I love them 😍 😂
Great video. I love all of my Outdoor vital's ventus! I can't wait to get their raincoat.
Love it, I'm a gear junkie. Nothin is too expensive lol I gotta hav the best. U forgot price of your Patagonia orange jacket.
Hyperlite Mountain Gear the Shell rain jacket. $475. Still have mine. Wish we could get enough people to demand they remake them. I’ve had it since 2018 and it’s still going. So, in my opinion, you buy nice things and take care of them, they’ll last forever.
wat liter volume is the pack? the bigger or smaller of the 2?
You should check out McHale Alpine Packs. Those prices rival this.
Great Video Dan and Emmett
what is your honest opinion about the hyperlite mountain gear packs vs the ov shadowlight pack?
I have to admit that I do have one of the items on your expensive list in my backpack, the Tyvek! Oh wait.
Great video though, a lot of fun seeing you use these gear on one of my all time favorite trails. 🎉
I was gonna say, I didn’t see a single bony chicken
Well if I was through hiking and going to live with a back pack for a year or so your experience with this pack might make it worth the price.
Granted there are good/great packs… but the “best pack I ever used.” Might be worth it if you are carrying it for a while and can afford it..
Yeah
Cheap tent with a great sleep system. No problem. Cooking pots and pans cheap but light no worries. Cheap headlamp for short trips. ok. Backpack depends on your load / distance. My pack is probably 80lbs. Backup of a backup of a backup. Tasmanian Tiger Range Pack MK II
I used that hat in the NH winter. It performs great
Love the vids guys...just discovered you guys recently keep up the good work!!
No Way Dan I just did the lost creek loop on 6/11-6/12 too. Missed ya on the trail
Wow, the inflation! I got my Leatherman Squirt for $40 on Amazon last year.
That backpack comes with a butler that carries it for you right ? Hence the zero gravity effect on the camper. LOL
Another thought would be to just rent or buy a Sherpa to carry all your gear! 😂
Enjoyed the comparisons.
Ok I better see a view on this tent & backpack, very curious on how well it will hold up.
Fun vid guys!
Not one mention of Fjällräven 😂
Emmet looks like he is the bass player of a heavy metal band that can sing really well.
Very entertaining video - really like the look of that tent :)
I feel like this video was the excuse video to the wife to buy all the expensive things😂
I have a venture, I agree it is awesome. I would by it again at this price
I was considering an alpaca hoodie (>$150) but picked up the windbreaker/hoodie combo for
Wow Dan Dan this must be the backpacking with Robin Leach episode??
Can we see a full review of that tent?
Single wall. $1100. Don't buy.
You are welcome.
Although I have never used that backpack, and probably never will, I would be willing to hazard that the law of "diminishing returns" applie here.
He said it was the most comfortable pack he had ever used and that adjustments were amazing. Doesn't get any better than that.
@@KB4QAA He also said he would never buy it. Also, it better be comfortable considering it costs as much as used car.
Which trails did you take in the Lost Creek Wilderness? I am from Colorado and I am looking to do some of those trails in this Wilderness area.
How did the MSR stakes perform in the "rocky" CO soil?
