My new favorite trail! Thanks for the recommend for our first backpacking trip. I can't believe we missed you!! OMG. We began on 7/1 - Got pushed a week and then...we failed. Overpacked, over-tired, newbs; recovering from pneumonia, etc..etc...wish we had seen you for a high five and some constructive criticism. It is the MOST beautiful, otherworldly place. I would have driven back up to meet you, it's so awesome. Note on not pushing it: Take it slow and easy if recovering from ANYTHING, first trip, sedentary lifestyle or if you feel like it. Enjoy the journey-NOT about the destination eh? Praying for you, Dan. So good to see you and the trail. Blessings, bro.
I'm glad you had a good time! The pictures brought back some very recent memories! We were there the first week on June. Same weather, TONS of skeeters! My pack was 34 lbs!!! I also carried my daughters pack for a bit as well as my wife's at some point or another... toppling the 50lb mark at those times. I'm fortunate that my knees cooperated! At 50, I feel like I'm on borrowed time and want to do this more and more while I still can. This trip was a primer hiking trip for my family, as well as myself. I'm an avid camper, fisherman and bushcrafter but am only now starting to get into hiking. I love it.
I love these gear loadout videos. I’ll be getting that Sawyer Squeeze water filter soon because of what they and you do to help people get clean water. Can’t wait to try it out. Glad you are better.
Awesome. I'm not looking for advanced bushcrafting, tactical survival gear peddling, bear hunting and cooking, or all that crazy, extraneous stuff. I just want some light gear tips to go solo hiking for the weekend like the majority of the people. It's amazing how rare it is to find a RUclips acct such as yours as suppose to these fringe (and absolute bonkers) outdoor topics I listed. Cheers and subbed.
Good stuff Dan! I just took my new Durston Kakwa 40 out this weekend and almost had a chipmunk chew a hole through it while setting up my tent! Luckily I scared him away before he did any damage. Gotta remember to take out my snack wrappers asap next time!
70F in June ... that sounds amazing It was 105F here in Dallas at the time you filmed. Think I'm doing summer in Michigan going forward. Great content, enjoy seeing products I wouldn't normally come across. Stay blessed... and cool
PUMP SUGGESTION!!! First, glad you're getting after it again. Love the videos. I'm gonna try one of those pumps out, I like that they can be reversed. Not for vacuum sealing, haha, but to deflate the sleeping pad. I use a shopvac for rafts and pontoons on river trips and the best is using it to suck the air out and get those things nice and flat and ready to transport without sitting on them and rolling them up and sitting some more or just waiting for gravity to do it's job. Anyways, that's what I'd use it for. Keep up the great videos.
Great to see you back at it Dan! I’ve been looking into Durston’s packs as well. Would love to see you try Dan’s packs as well. Load lifters are a game changer and Dan included them in his packs.
That Nitecore NB10000 is a game changer. I have hated so many battery bricks because theyre either huge and heavy or small but take 18 years to charge a phone. Having 20W charging 10k Mah in a 5.29 oz brick is insanity. I bought it instantly 😂
As i even begin to watch this vdo; Dan i want you to know that i look forward to your content brother! Don’t doubt i am the only to say this but i get to escape even if for a moment from the things i am enduring in life. Something abt your spirit is therapeutic 😊 tc
DB, I have an idea for one of your videos..... Do a video on some "out-takes" or "behind the scenes" clips. You and Emmitt are hilarious so I know you must have some great material. If you've done this already then I missed it so I apologize ahead of time. Also, if you like my idea I have a couple more that you might like. All of them benefit you and your channel. Anyway, keep the vids coming. Take care....
Glad to see you back! i have one requirement, please try to research and remember the things you are going to talk about in your videos and keep it healty to do more videos!
Dan Becker. Add to your Sawyer CNOC set up the blue Sawyer coupler and about a foot of light line tied to the top closure of CNOC bag. Lightly screw empty Smartwater bottle to Blue coupler, which is on tight to outflow of Sawyer Squeeze which is tightly secured to CNOC bag, hang from branch. Do something else while gravity filtering your water. Added bonus, less stress on bag, filter and your patience.
I use the vacuum side of the Tiny Pump 2X to pull the last bit of air out of my pad after I've let it deflate on its own. Make it easy to roll/pack it as small as possible.
Great job with your video! 👍 Cool how Sawyer donates $10 for the countries where people need the filter for safe drinking water. We will be in Pictured Rocks this weekend.
We just completed a 7 day 50 mile hike on Isle Royale with our kids (8 & 10) with much advise from your channel. We joked that we would see you there, guess we picked wrong UP location. Not really, Isle Royale was amazing and a great place to hike!
I’m in Texas and it’s the same. Just got my new Enlightenment Equipment 20 degree quilt in the mail and Torrid jacket on the way but I’ll have to wait months before I can use them 😂
Hi from Newfoundland Canada great video buddy as always lots of nice gear and nice fjallraven jacket fjallraven gear is great have a great day my friend
Nice gear breakdown. I have the OV pack on pre order and I’m looking forward to putting it through the paces. I have a Durston pack that was comfortable, but is showing durability issues within the first season.
Hope you’re staying at the Au Sable site the first nite. You can walk down to the old lighthouse and watch the waves crash the shoreline. If it’s a certain day and time you can tour the lighthouse
Hey Dan! About the DB initials! Ditty Bag or Dan Becker? Maybe it's both, LOL! You did great getting your base down so low. I couldn't get mine below 14 lbs. I didn't carry the tent but carried everything else for my husband and myself. Maybe that's why I couldn't get my pack weight down any more than I did. Fully loaded with 3 days/2 nights trip, including water/food etc., I weighed my pack at under 19 lbs. I also use my Helinox Chair Zero and Sawyer Squeeze and love them both!
Thanks for the video, your stuff is always work watching. Anybody making a tent out of Challenge Ultraweave 200 yet? Sounds like excellent tent material...
Hi Dan, love to look at your videos and see the evolution of your gear. Many bloggers have a ''lightest camping gear'' video. I would be interested in a ''most compact'' gear list, I am sure the light weight stuff is a good starter, but being minimal volume has many advantages too (travel, biking...) would you be able to make a video of a camping gear list with minimal volume in mind? tks
Big Agnes makes the Skyline UL backpacking chair that is just over a pound but is way more comfortable and more stable on uneven ground. I owned the chair zero for years and traded it for the Skyline and havent looked back!!!
Do you have the adapter for the bottom of the sawyer squeeze that lets you hook a smart water bottle to it so when you're filtering from the Cnoc through the Sawyer, you can hang it from a tree? I use that every time I go out and love it
Love this video. Can you please take your wife and/or kids on a backpacking trip and show us what is the best items for them? Kinda hoping for the top 3items (matress, sleepingbag and backpack) 😊❤️ P.s. hope you are feeling good. Take care of yourself ❤
Hi Dan, Great Video as always! Just curious, Have you tried the Durston tent in the wind? or other trekking pole tents in the wind? Any tips? I want to take mine to Patagonia but a little worried for the weather. Thanks! Great to see you back in your element!

I would like to see you setup a tarp with ground sheet pad and maybe a bivi bag JIC weather gets a little wet. I have a new DD tarp and have studied several ways to rig it have most everything to setup just haven't gotten a bivi bag just can't find one I think would be right for me.

I agree that the expensive Durston tent wouldn't be for the new backpacker, but the other durston tent that I own sure is! And the Zflick poles (instead of trekking poles) are excellent!
The only thing I care to see and you don't even show it. Of course we want to know how Dan Becker digs his cat hole. Jkjk Really like that zpacks rain coat. Glad to see you still at it.
Flextail need to make a brushless pump. My flextail sounded like a dying chicken after 2 uses and gave out after 3. Luckily I was 2 days within the return window so back it went.
Hey Dan! I was wondering which attachement on the flextail pump did you use to inflate the pad? Im having the same combo but none of the attachement seems to fit great without me holding the pump for the 3minutes that the pad inflates hahah. I was thinking about 3d printing an adapter for it
If you're using that flextail with your big Agnes, I make an adapter that lets you inflate your pad hands free! Happy to send you one if you'd like to test it. Makes it a lot more convenient to use. I also make one for Nemo, S2S, Exped, and a few sizes of pocket bellows. And I can probably design one that will depress that flap for deflation.

I believe it is a great undiscovered gym for ultralight backpacking . Please let me know what your first impressions tell you .
You can vacuum mosquitoes up with that pump after they enter your tent too! Gotta love multi-purpose gear!
😂
As it vacuums them its just shredding mosquitoes into a bloody slurry in your tent
Or use it to pull out air from your mattress. (would be pretty difficult with the big Agnes used in the video tho)
I was planning to vacuum some of the stuff to make it smaller. Not sure how it will work out lol
Dan after every single product: “it’s insanely expensive, kind of stupid if you ask me”
😂 good stuff as always, Dan.
Glad to see you're getting back on your feet Dan! One foot in front of the other and before you know it you'll be there.
Well, you are good at buying things, I'll give you that :)
So glad to hear your feeling better so u can get out there again
Dude, these quick trips are the mainstay of weekend warriors ,...like me! ; )
Glad to see you are still able to get out and about! I pray that God uses this time to draw you closer to him and you grow because of it all.

Another awesome video , hope your doing well my friend 🙏🏼
Dan, you need to try a backcountry bidet. A lot cleaner, no TP, easy.
I am beyond excited to look into the Outdoor Vitals pack. It addresses many of the issues I have with the the Hyperlite (LOAD LIFTERS!, padding, and support). Still, I wonder how this pack fares on a petite female frame. Thanks for showing this product Dan, I really value your opinion!
Update: they come in different torso, hip belt sizes! 😮🥳
Did you get the Outdoor Vitals pack? Do you like it? Thank you, Jade
The irony of you complaining about the price of the camera bag while standing in front of these pieces of gear is pretty funny, Dan. 😂

About as lightweight as it gets. looking good.
I'm curious how the 1p and other single wall tents do with condensation close to a great lake and in the humidity of the Midwest.
