- My two day backpacking gear load out. Here is how to pack for your backpacking trip. It is a detailed look at everything I brought on my 2 day backpacking trip to Pictured Rocks this past weekend. The ultralight backpacking and lightweight gear is what you will see here. The loadout was perfect for this trip as I used everything I brought!

For those of you wondering… My pack weight including food, water, and fuel (but not the camera gear) was approximately 22.5 pounds total. Forgot to put that in the video LOL!
Dan are you bringing the drone on this trip?
Pictured rocks doesn’t allow drones 😭😢
I love that your not an ultralight backpacker....there are too many...I like just....backpacker who brings what he wants haha...take care
I like your back for food. What brand/type is it?
Beer can not included?
The hiking version of John Krasinski! Right on my dude and thanks for making helpful videos without all the pretentiousness.
I might be wrong but accepting a free quilt that is normally on sale for 3 or 4 hundred dollars could be seen as a form of payment.
When I was backpacking across America many times I would be offered a free shower or a place to wash my clothes and even these offers were humbling and HARD to accept
You’re not wrong
Perspective. A free quilt, asking for a review is much different than a cash sponsorship. Sometimes you tube folks agree to accept something for review with the understanding that they can say what they want, without reservation. Very different than a company giving you a payment to give them a good review. I won’t say you’re wrong, but there is certainly more than one perspective on the matter.
Thanks for not over complicating your info. One thing i have learned from watching your advice is not to get stressed and stay as relaxed as possible while getting ready for a kayak or backpack trip (I used to get over anxious about leaving stuff out or anticipating all the things that can go wrong lol).
that's an awesome tip to consider... i always get lil anxious too...
I love your style of backpacking. It’s funny cause 90% of the videos I watch are of Darwin and how light he packs his pack but I need to realize that 100% of my backpacking is exactly what you do, weekend warrior style. And because of that I usually carry 35 pounds of all my creature comforts.
"Im a big baby at night.....so lay off" lol that's great!
🤣🤣
I wondered how you fit all your stuff into such a small pack, so this was fascinating to watch. I see it helps that your 2-person tent packs down smaller than my 1-person Macpac Microlight :)
Mad ting
Hello my hiking friend, you have a great gear loadout. You are prepared for just about anything, very well organized. Wow, only 22.5 pounds. Take care out there and always have fun. 🤗
Thanks Ronald!!
I recently purchased an inReach Explorer+ because I solo hike often or go with just my daughter. Makes me feel better about taking my daughter into the back country.
That’s good to know, Christina! I definitely enjoyed having it this past weekend. I was able to text my family at any point.
I'm amazed at how much stuff you can fit in this pack
Thank you for this video. I have a LiteAF 40L suspension pack, Big Agnes Tigerwall ul2, Bandit quilt and much of the gear you use. I will be backpacking for the first time this week. I could not get my backpack to feel comfortable until I put the food bag in the middle. It made a big difference in the weight distribution. Thanks again for the video.
Hey Dan, great videos. 2 things that bother me:
1. Why would a a frequent backpacker use single use disposable water bottles? (There are soluble electrolytes you could be using in a more eco conscious reusable bottle).
2. Anyone traveling in the outdoors should always have a physical map of the area and a compass (and know how to use it/read topo lines etc.). It might feel safe to rely on a phone with both of those features, but a phone could die, get damaged or be lost. The app might stop working or maybe you forgot to download the area or all of the layers. A Garmin is an excellent emergency tool but you might need to make decisions based on your location for help or survival before emergency services can aid you. Where might fresh water be? What’s the closest peak? Where is the area that might have a clearing? What direction should you head that’s nearest to a road?
Just some things to think about. We’re all learning and I learn a lot from you too.
Best
VERY helpful. I learned a lot just being able to review what you pack. Thx for sharing! Cheers!
Thanks for the plug, Dan! I'm looking forward to getting out there too! I'm hoping to do a day hike this weekend and then I'm off for four days in the canoe the following weekend. I hope you have a grand adventure!
It’s a great knife, Justin! I wish I had those knive making skills!
@@DanBecker Thanks Dan! It took countless hours in the shop and I've learnt from making a lot of mistakes. These were really fun to make!
Nice video as always. For a longer trip with possible inclement weather, it really is recommended to pack the quilt and extra clothes inside of a trash compactor bag. Happy trails!
I’m going on the Manistee River trail in a couple weeks when I graduate!!
Love your channel Dan. Very helpful and great production. Thanks for sharing.
Thanks so much, Toby! I really appreciate the encouragement! Thanks for watching!
Michigan! My home state. Heading to Isle Royale for 7 days of backpacking this summer. Can't wait. Have been to pictured rocks many times. So beautiful! Thanks for your helpful videos.
WOW Katherine! Isle Royal is definitely on my bucket list. 7 days?! That’s gonna be one full backpack!! 😂. Have a BLAST!!!!!! 🙌🙌
Great idea taking the group to a magnificent area. I hope they continue that journey.
Your channel is proof of good ideas and you rock buddy......some of the best on RUclips..... keep up the good work...more should be like you
Ordered an Under Ground Quilt around new Year’s. Love it. I’m sure you’re going to enjoy yours also
So far it’s awesome! Love it!
This is exactly the kind of information I’m looking for. Your videos are terrific and bonus, you were getting ready to come to my neck of the woods! It may seem simple to you but this was all great info for me as I’m just getting started into backpacking.
Here’s a newer video that might help as well How I fit all this backpacking gear in a 40L pack
ruclips.net/video/MJoaLN5S2aw/видео.html
@@DanBecker another great video! Thanks!
Yep love it !! Comfort versus weight !
I plan on numerous White Mountains solo trips this summer, the inreach was the solution my wife and I agreed upon. It's a nice unit, just a bit pricy.
What a simple, and very well done video.
I use a UGQ renegade. I'm sold on them. Hands down best quilt I've owned and I've had some nice ones. Probably only spot I'd go to for a top quilt at this point.
Totally agree that NOT using stuff sacks is a much more efficient use of pack space.
Yay! Time for a trip video. Spring is here!
When do we get to see YOUR trip video??!! You’re the best editor EVER!!
@@DanBecker hahahaha Well I don't have a "for sure" trip planned until the first week of June. But of course I wanna get out before then! I definitely have my thoughts set on a couple weekends. Gotta recover from the 10 days I just spent on the east coast doing city things though! haha
Great loadout, Dan! Excited to see the trip and how the gear performs. Especially love that light weight knife. Great stuff!!!
I always thought you looked and sounded like Jim from the office and you mentioned it. That's awesome😂
Nice! There’s a lot of urban camping where I live.
Look how neat and organized that pack is!!!
Bahahahahahahahah!!!! I’ll never compete with your perfectly symmetrical packing system!!! 🤣🤣🤣🤣
Dude! You scored big on the free stuff. Wish I could get some free stuff too. Can’t wait to see the trip video.
🤣🙌🙌
Good job. Two pillows, spooled.
Great info, thanks Dan!
well the zpacks toothbrush case breaks - - and it's gonna - - leukotape makes a good replacement hinge and also hey extra leukotape
Bust out the poop kit- I got toilet paper tables... haven’t tried them yet but 500 should have apocalyptic value. Love your work especially the one with the kids in black hills. Way to inspire. Great ideas
Finally someone who packs realistically
Quote of the day “you never know how much you’ll go” 😂 enjoy your trip!!
🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣 Thanks Luke!!
You had me howling laughing at how you pronounce Aloe Vera!! OMG..... I'm dying. Love it! Glad to see someone (you) being "real" with your hiking choices.... not a weight fanatic, bit reasonable.... and taking two pillows, well, because YOU want to! Keep up the great videos.
🤣🤣 thanks Jenn!!!!!
Great vid. I've been looking for a video showing exactly what to bring and how to pack it. All vides just show what they bring and lay everything on the floor. Very descriptive video for a newbie like me.
Have a great and safe trip Dan... All the best!
Great video! Thanks for sharing!
Still working things out for my own packing. I was surprised by how much you keep outside of the main pack.
Love the Lindo hats. Have em all
I love watching people shove their giant sleeping bags/ quilts into there packs... Amazing how small they cAn get.
🤣 so true! It’s waaaay easier and takes waaaay less time to pack up!! I should make one of those ‘satisfaction’ videos and I’ll just shove quilt after quilt into a backpack 😂
@@DanBecker YES!!
Ha! Always interested in hearing about a hike to pictured rocks. Im from Michigan and I have been to pictured rocks twice. Once in the summer for 8 nights and once in the winter for 2 nights. I will go again someday. Im in Alaska now for the next couple of years, and after work today im headed to Wickersham dome for the weekend.
Lol. Had to pause the video to comment here. I ALSO pack 2 pillows. I'm kinda new but I realized pretty quickly that because I always sleep with 2 pillows at home, I also sleep soooooo much better with 2 pillows on the trail. Drive on!
Yes!! 2 pillows are the best!! 🤣
Boy are you Growing I subbed after Christmas and BOOM 👍 YOU TOOK OFF
Wow thanks for being one of the early subscribers!!
I was really hoping you were gonna throw your pack into that pool behind you.
Nice gear list dood! We will get you to be a grows dweller for life!
It’s true I’m loving the Big Agnes and Nemo Tensor combo!!
@@DanBecker I mean, your next episode would be pretty easy to manage if you did throw all your stuff in the pool. "Here are the top 5 reasons why I regret throwing $1500 of equipment into the pool."
🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
Lol awesome.. oatmeal just in case I get hungry after the meat sweats induced by the 20 course meal. Awesome videos thanks chief!!!
How cool! You were in my neck of the woods (MI). Pictured rocks is definitely on my backpacking list for this year. Thanks for the info, I’m new to the hiking world and need all the help I can get! 🤪
Ive binged watch all your videos. Keep up the good work!
Thanks so much, Addison! I really appreciate that encouragement!
@@DanBecker you're welcome! Let us know how the quilt worked out. I'm in the market for one. Thanks!
I sure will!
Enjoy the trip my friend. Be safe. I look forward to seeing the trip video
On my way up there next week. So beautiful
Dan i love Your video’s , the are great.
Being just south of green bay in northeast Wisconsin I definitely need to get up to Pictured Rocks seeing it is within a few hour drive.
Very cool system that you have in packing your pack . I'm impressed with it thank you for sharing this with us !!👍👍😎
Thanks Tyler!
Exactly what I was looking for. Kudos.
Aqua Clips are awesome!
What what from MN! Have fun in the Upper, just found your channel and love it. Getting me worked up for some camping in the northwoods!
Awesome! Glad to inspire!!
Request from the Dan Becker Squad - Please do a video on properly adjusting your pack and, more importantly, adjusting a pack for the kiddos. Do you have regular or smaller packs for the kids? Thanks a TON in advance!
That’s one of the most requested videos! I’ll do my best! As far as the kids packs. My 9 & 11 year old use the Osprey Ace packs. They are FANTASTIC!!
That was our first 10mile hike. Still one of the most beautiful scenery.
Have fun in the U.P.! I used to go up there frequently when I lived in SW MI. Looking forward to seeing your videos!
It was AMAZING!! I got back last night!! Video coming soon!!!!!
Dan, great gear video. Excited to hear how that new quilt works out. Keep on hiking.
Thanks Doug!!!!!!
Lol "this is my poop kit . My tee pee for my pee pee." I literally played that like 10x's. My kids were rolling
😂😂😂🤣🤣
Jesus christ.
Whoop whoop! Time for some TRAIL!!!! Great gear!!
Thanks Janet!
Wow I felt like it was a magic trick when you put this huge quilt in the backpack and it still appeared empty!
🤣🤣
Great video! I'm definitely going to look into some of the gear you mentioned
Great video Dan. I enjoy your delivery. I'm learning. Sometimes when I'm watching videos, I'm listening, really I am but I look around in the background. Dan, can I come over and swimming in your pool? ...."If I had such faith that I could move mountains, but didn't love others, I would be nothing."
Hey Tim! Come on over! FYI God is amazing!
Your videos are so enlightening . . . I carry way too much stuff in my pack.
I got the Justin Anderson water bottle holders for the arm straps of my pack. They are awesome and are super easy to use. I have the 1L and 650ml. You should check them out!
Thanks Chad! I will definitely do that!
Ah man nice choice, i love the yoop. Such an underrated area.
Headed back to MI in a few weeks myself, doing a week on the Au Sable in the Grayling area. Looking forward to escaping Florida.
Thanks so much for this video. First trip coming up next month; 3 days in Pecos Wilderness Area with 4 dads and 6 older teens. I've mined your videos for helpful tips. First ever channel which I subscribed as I was impressed with your value added!
Wow thanks so much!! Glad I could help and thanks for watching and subscribing!!
I do the same for my top and bottom quilt. Just stuff it at the bottom of my pack with no stuff sack. Holds a better shape to the pack too
True story!
Awesome! Have all my gear laid out much the same. I'm headed out for a 3 day trip in the Rockies this weekend!
I love the Rockies! Hope to get back out there again someday!
@@DanBecker gotta get yourself up here to Canada sometime!
Definitely on my bucket list!
Definitely on my bucket list!
love the spam bit haha
Hey Dan,,, big follower of yours. Really like all your videos. Good to see another guy that has kids, gets out when he can, and loves gear. Keep on keeping on Dan! I'm headed to Pictured Rocks in a couple of weeks, hope to see you post something from there.
Hey Bill! I appreciate the support! I will be posting a video of my pictured rocks trip in the next week or two. I have almost 80 GB of video to go through LOL! Have you ever been up there? It is an amazing place!
@@DanBecker Already looking forward to it. I'm in Green Bay and always looking for midwestern hiking trails. Can not wait to hit the North Country. Thanks for the Spam rules too. Here is just a spoof video I did for friends... ruclips.net/video/Y3ApbYSDf9g/видео.html
Rangers there are great.
Wanted to see you set the pack on the ground and use your foot to stuff in the last few pieces of gear :) Have a great trip!
Thanks John!
The Au Sable trail is one of my all time favorite scenic drives, from Newberry to Grand Marais to Munising. A gently winding tunnel in the trees with scenic overlooks of lake superior and other scattered waterways.
Is this magical backpack?because you can put in everything 😮😮😮😄
Yes. Yes it is!! 🤣🤣
Granite Gear Air Zipsack Ultralight Zippered Pouch
Great video, screw those stuff sacks.
Just cram it in.
Hey Dan, I like your backyard pond! Keep up the good work.
Thanks, Mike!
love the vids dan
You just like the orange too spot spiders
Truth! 🤣
I just discovered your channel. I like the content. I have one question for ya. What size (liters) do you use for a backpack?
Watched all of it
I wish UGQ didn’t pay me with that quilt 😢. They’re gear looks amazing. All the gear made in Scotland is pish. We be have to import anything decent.
Great video, Dan! Congratulations on 10k subscribers!
Thanks so much!!!
Another 10/10 video. love this channel. you put more work into your channel then HBO put into writing the last season of game of thrones.
😂😂 Thanks!!!
Great video" I enjoyed it, I took notes and I am sorry you are loaning out your hammock. You have a great gear list. I am surprised it went in your Z pack so easily. It looks great.
Dan, I picked up the little Coleman Kids backpack for my 5 y/o based on your previous video suggestion. Thanks for the idea. Also, I’m teetering between the Big Agnes Tiger Wall UL2 and the Zpacks Duplex. I’d appreciate your input on why you rock the Big Agnes. Thanks brother!
Found a new osprey atmos 65 on FB for $150. My plan is to hike the same trail you did. Pictured rocks in the UP
Awesome! It’s an amazing trail. Pretty easy as well. Other than the mud 😂
So you use a piece of tyvek instead of a tarp? I really like the idea, just first time hearing about that. I assume it works well for you. Nice video.Ejoyed watching. Thanks..
Great video brother nice gear haul
Hope you had a good trip. Friends who have hiked Pictured Rocks highly recommend it. Personally, I love the Porkies. Hope to hike the entire park this year. Hey, all you out there who are thinking what a weakling, I am 67 so 90 miles of solo backpacking is a big deal. Love the backpack info.
Guys I backpack with they put there mountain house in a zip lock and one mountain house bag to help with your vacuum seal. If you have the extra water to mix bag
Rinse bag sorry
Would be cool if the sheath fit one the handle
Dan, do you take a trash bag for opened/empty food items? Ever have a problem with attracting critters?
Do you pack out your poop and toilet paper, or do you bury it?
You have 2.5L of water, are you going to resupply on trail? How much water do you expect to consume per day on the trail?
