Awesome to see how you're switching up different gear! I also use a Deuter backpack: the Aircontact 50+10 and I LOVE it. It's not ultralight, but it is really structured and durable, which makes carrying more gear easier. It is also nice not to have to worry about protecting my pack too much, since I know the fabric can handle a lot :D

This was really helpful! I'm researching to hike and camp with my daughter and know very little about it. This and your other videos are answering all my questions and panic is subsiding. Overload- so much to know! SO much gear to choose from!! (How will I ever know what type of hikers we are without trying all this gear, what do i start with, i can't afford to buy stuff we won't use and purchase more, i need someone with experience who has tried all this stuff- !!! Good stuff, I love my Deuter, it’s not the lightest but man is it comfortable and quality throughout. I love that your not a gram wiener, for us weekend warriors comfort is essential.
I have the deuter air compact lite 60+10 and I LOVE it. It is definitely worth the extra weight

Also, condensed stuff sacks tend to be EXTRA solid, and makes for a lumpy backpack that sticks uncomfortably in your back!! 😁
I love the message in the beginning about gear being personal and everyone having different needs and preferences! That's something I always want people to know. It irritates me to no end when people say others' gear choices are wrong. There are so many options and trade-offs out there! Except for your love of hammock camping...ground sleeping is the only way hahaha JK!

Dan Becker hi nice people😊. It’s nice to watch your channels. Dan you are similar in age to me and seem to be in the same situation. Life’s demands limit our time to only one or two overnight hikes. It’s nice to take everyone’s knowledge and put together a system that works for me. We are similar with tents, chairs and such. Thanks to you both. I love the cold, can’t wait to get out and enjoy the cool fall and the leaves changing color and no bugs. Then winter, snowmobiles, titanium stove and hot tent camping! ❤️❄️☃️

I figure hike the Land between the Lakes North/South Trail that's about 64 miles as my first thru hike and test the new equipment I buy.

We're the same age. I simply cannot sit on the ground because at 56 it's pure torture. Love my Chair Zero and can't imagine backpacking without it.
I used my Zpacks ArcHaul 62L to do a 9 day Yellowstone trip. Food and all gear and water combined was 32 lbs on day one. That's with a base weight of 9 lbs. Honestly, I've owned the Osprey and a few other 'comfort' packs and after this trip I'd happily sell those other packs. The ArcHaul did AMAZING with the weight. I walked out on day 9 with 11.8 lbs on my back, with a few Cliff bars and an extra snacks left over. I can't say enough good about Zpacks products. Just an amazing pack and shelter. No back pain at all. Just tossing that out there :)

Tips for those who need it Monistat chafing gel Works fantastic comes in a very small tube and last all day not sticky feels like powder almost immediately
I had good luck with the Sawyer Micro. I also like the Be Free. Sometimes they don’t work & nothing comes out. Soaking in white vinegar for :45 min has solved that on both of these filters.
Check out Seek Outside packs (the Gila specifically). It’s an external frame pack with loads of capacity that is sub 3lbs. It’s AWESOME!

As you said ,Location , Location , location. I pack about the same way , last in 1st out wit one exception.. The rain fly for the hammock is in the back pocket since it's the 1st thing that goes up ( it likes to rain one me and I don't have to open the pack ) and the last to come down. Then the hammock since I like to use it as storage while setting up camp. Summer to Winter , here in Florida I switch from a Zpacks Nero to the Zpacks Arc Blast. Basically the same gear is used year round but for winter some additional items. I add a Down top quilt , sometimes a under quilt. Otherwise my main insulation is a full length self inflating air mattress. ( I like it about 3/4 inflated in the Hammock ). Extra clothing , A wind breaker and a long sleeve Merino wool pull over plus a pair of gloves. Here in the semi tropics we don't have drastic temperature changes like the rest of the country. It does get cold at times but normally by mid morning it's warm again.
Nice look at your fall loadout. To handle not being able to reach the water bottle I use a Dragon Snare from Hemlock Mountain Outdoors. I like that it will carry a Nalgene or Normal smart water style bottle. It will be interesting to hear how the new pack does.
Our fall setup is very similar. I always bring my chair too. I refuse to hike without my chair. Lol

Hey dan - awesome video...would like to see if you have any tips/tricks for packing and unpacking camp in the rain, it’s something I’ve run into a couple times and I tend to just end up with a bunch of soggy gear. Thanks!
I have the Deuter Aircontact 75+10 to carry a DSLR camera + equipment along with a large bear canister with several days of food.
My pack doubles as a travel backpack outside of the US and everything fits including the REI backpacking chair.
At 250lbs 42-inch waist and a 52-inch chest, the pack contact points distribute the weight evenly, with lots of pockets and access to the interior from the top, from the front and extremely is durable.
The ultra & lightweight Backpacks are great for making miles but comfort and durability for years of use is what I seek. 😊🤙🏾😁👋🏾😎👌🏾🤓👍🏾

You have almost identical gear to what I use. I’ve had a Deuter pack for the last couple years and have enjoyed it. I have the air contact lite 65. The Atom LT jacket was given to me last year and has been the best jacket I’ve ever had. Also live the tiger wall and the memo tensor.

Hey dan, I found a good bottle about the diameter of the sawyer, I think it was a smaller Evian bottle, cut it down to about the height of the sawyer squeeze and that's my scoop for low springs and water. I store my Sawyer in there in my water kit, nice and compact and no issue with those cold small trickling springs along the way.

If you have to open your backpack during a downpour, your quilt could get wet. Even a small amount of moisture on your quilt can turn a chilly night miserable (speaking from experience), so I wouldn't risk it, thus I dry-bag it, even if it's not an optimal shape.
Whats with the Swayer Filter, what am I missing here, the Kadtadyn filters water FAST! I fill the CNOC and squeeze, real time into all my 1 liter bottles, takes a minute? My 13 yearly holds her bottle as I fill it, takes 1 second? No gravity feed, no waiting? In an emergency you can boil water.
Nice load out. I wish i didnt have to worry about bears. We have black and grizzly bears here.
At the trailhead, put some Leukotape on any spots on the feet that typically get hot. Then drink 6 beers and go. Trail-gating!

Hey Dan! Great load out, ton of info/tips I really liked it. I could suggest one thing though: you have A LOT of stuff in your front mesh pocket. I would put some of those small items in your hipbelt pockets, you didn't mention anything that were going in those (which is odd). That would help distribute the weight plus you would always have some items easily accessible. Have a good one!
I fill one with snacks and the other one has a pack hanger in a buff that I forgot to include in the video!

Excellent video, as usual! I'm with you on stuff sacks. My pack IS the stuff sack! I actually don't use the one that came with the tent, tent goes in loose at very bottom so I can take it out first from the "sleeping bag" entry at bottom of pack. That way rest of pack stays closed up if pitching in a storm.

How do you deal with it when the tent isn't dry when its time to repack?
@@Angel-hm9so I keep tent, fly, and footprint separate. Rest of gear is in pack liner above it. So that stuff stays dry. if my footprint is terribly wet and muddy, it gets strapped to the outside of the pack while I hike.

Amen to this! I am a novice and I’ve built my pack up on a tight budget. For smaller items I was able to go very light, but things like my pack, tent and blanket had to go heavier. I clock in at 19 lbs which honestly was a decent weight some years ago. I hike in warmer weather so I don’t need heavy pads, blanket etc.
That's better than my weight of 27.5 lbs, I've been picking it over quite a bit though getting it lighter. 😊 I got a Tidewe framed hunting bag, what's yours?
@@Thehappyhammockhiker mine is a Teton Scout 3400. I believe it’s 4.5 pounds. Maybe not the heaviest but it’s heavy but it is quite durable at least. I will research your bag, must be external frame? As a hunter I gather you have more to bring with you than a simple hiker might too so that’s likely part of it.
I'm a hiker not a hunter it was the cheapest external framed pack I could find, I'm still new to this.
And mine is 90liters I like all the room but I'm working on condensing down, I fall more in line with traditional then ultralite
I am a two pillow person. As a side sleeper it is so much more comfortable and I am willing to carry that weight for a good nights sleep. I used to keep my tent in the stuff sack until someone showed me how to use it to fill in the gaps in my pack. Same method as your sleeping bag but towards the top. If the fly gets wet I shove it in the mesh pouch on the outside of my pack.

Tenacious tape is amazing for repairing nylon (clothes, some tents). It's not great at repairing DCF. Zpacks sells DCF tape that will work much better.

Totally true! That tarp was STUPID expensive!! But it’s still a great tarp. I agree balanced buying is the way to go!!
The white tiger wall looks pretty rad, but I'm guessing may get fairly grubby quickly.

Arc'teryx gear is awesome! The Atom is a sweet jacket! I wanted to get one in multicam but its very hard to find. That jacket will outlast the ghost whisperer and will do you justice in the more wetter conditions. If it gets really cold and wet pair it with your rain jacket and you will be toasty warm! Don't get me wrong the whisperer is super nice too! Totally agree with you on how important our feet are! I carry multiple pairs of socks no matter what! I like your LiteAF bear bag. I like the button over velcro. The helinox chairs are nice! They used to make a chair one mini not sure why they stopped selling them? Nice fall gear loadout man! Hike on!!

I can't seem to part with my Kelty 6400 external frame pack. My BW is under 20lbs (4 of which is the aforementioned pack), so I could switch to a lighter pack. It is just so comfortable I don't care how awful it looks, but am going back and forth on the weight cost. Goodtimes.

Thanks for the compliments! The tent is the big Agnes tiger wall ULtwo. The sawyer micro has clogged up on me every time I’ve used it. To the point where it does not work at all.

Great ideas...the more hikers I watch the better I can make decisions. But I hear noone about extra pair or pairs of shoelaces...just'n idea ;-)
It seems like there are 2 camps of backpackers and I am in the other one! I prefer to have EVERYTHING in stuff sacks or contractor bags. It makes life so much easier for me to not have things flying around when I'm grabbing stuff out of my pack. It also makes it easier to know where everything is, gives me plenty of bear bag options (I hike with my boyfriend and the dog so we tend to have lots to hang), and then gives me extra assurance that everything is dry if it starts raining. I also love love love my Camelback, so having everything in bags makes it easier to get the bladder out for refills without scattering my stuff all over the ground. A place for everything, and everything in it's place!
I fall in the middle - I have a pack liner to make sure everything stays dry. Then there are stuff sacks for my clothes, for my food, for my electronics/etc, and a mesh bag for my kitchen kit. Everything else including the quilt goes loose in the pack. I find it easier to get a condensed, balanced, and compressable load out so the weight stays close to my body.
@@backpacker3421 this is a helpful tip! My down bag is definitely the bulkiest item even though I jam it into a stuff sack to try and save space. I may have to try this, thanks!
@@msadams224 Glad to hear it! I would definitely go with the pack liner if your down gear will be loose - a contractor bag, or a DCF liner will keep that gear dry even if your pack gets waterlogged or leaks. The last thing you want is to pull into camp with a wet down quilt or mummy bag. It will definitely save space having a down bag out loose though - it takes up almost no space that way, just filling in the gaps at the bottom of the pack that would otherwise be empty space.
Thank God you explained the aqua clip. I bought one and couldn’t figure out how to clip it to my pack with the little Velcro straps that came with it. I’m a big dumb animal though! 🤣😆😂
🤣🤣 you’re not alone! I don’t think I use it as intended but I threw out those dumb Velcro straps right away!!
Jeremy Yoder - it’s supposed to attach to the webbing on the shoulder and the Velcro holds it firmly in place. Some packs won’t have the right webbing placement, but Zpacks will because it’s their product. The sternum strap is a good alternative if your shoulder strap won’t work.

Hello from Wisconsin! I'm just getting into hiking. What are some of your favorite trails in the state?
Man i really love your videos, i have just goten in to hiking and started buying my gear, but one thing i don't get is that from my POV your pack seems quite full at the end, how do you fit 3-4 days worth of food you and maby a kid in that pack? or would you use a larger pack?

Good walkthrough of your pack although a lot of your gear is obviously US based so will incur taxes to UK making it more costly. Thanks for sharing anyway really enjoy your channel. Andy
No doubt you figured this out, but if not, that little stuff sack in your food bag is the rock bag to throw over the tree branch when you're throwing your line. Put a rock in the small bag, clip your cordage to the bag, then throw the bag up and over the branch.
