I love that he's actually giving humble advice on practical songwriting rather than just being like, "Play like me...*insane shred*....got that? I'll play it again *insane shred*". This is a lot more helpful than that. haha

Dennis Osborn did you know that Paul was once removed from a class that he was teaching to? He told the story about how he would just show-off and his students told the dean or someone in a higher position that they didnnt like the way he taught.

once i realized that all music is rhythm, i became a lot more musically free. this is good advice for any musician.

yeah i learn alot about melody from singing lessons and ryhthm from drum lessons

Toller Brown for sure. learning drums really helped me too as well as singing. learning bass and piano helped too. i found the more instruments i learned, the more aware i was of how a song comes together and i was able to be a lot more tasteful with my playing.

He was huge in his day and is still highly regarded by guitarists. I've seen him in covers competitions in Japan playing cover after cover, the guy knows more than most people in the industry and in that regard he is under-estimated, his skill level speaks for itself, he's a legend.

This perfectly illustrates why Paul is arguably *_the_* 'best'.
In the wake of Paul's rise on Yngwie's heels in the mid-1980s, there are now literally countless ace players, both known and obscure. Some are artists, others are practiced technicians. Paul's genuine *_style,_* well beyond perfected chops, defines his excellence. Total package. His lucid explanations and practical demonstrations are as accessible as they get.
To me, Paul's also the most underrated -- or perhaps better-said, the least recognized -- and most in-the-pocket rhythm guitarist to appear thus far. He's an absolute groove monster whose facility as a rhythm player has always been overshadowed by his own prowess and fame as a 'shredder'. Nice guy, too. He allowed me to videotape a clinic he did back in '95. I *_MUST_* get that on RUclips, all these years after the fact. Great clinic, with a lot of improvisation played off of audience involvement.
Paul Gilbert is 'the best', as much as I dislike and discourage the use of that title, because his aptitude represents an ideal combination of what can be taught and what can only be gifted. Style.

Its great that he does these clinics because hes such a natural teacher and due to his career, teaching is probably not on his radar screen at all. You can just sesnse his pure love for the instrument in these videos. Would be great to have a one on one lesson/jam with him.

  • @theomegleyouhate

@mccheese95 He 100% explains exactly what I'm talking about within first 2 minutes. It's impossible to make some creative without some sort of influence. Even if it's a bird singing or a car horn honking, that influence is what triggers creativity. The genre of hip-hop was created using samples of music. People have sampled Jon Bonham drum beats when producing hip hop and created something new with that influence. The Paul Gilbert and Deep Purple example isn't that direct, but it's the same idea.

Your not gonna like this but that answer in an essence proves my point. You listened to them they influenced you, then you made music. I played with a band for 6 years, people at gigs would say, what do you call that? never heard anything like it! In reality we weren't trying to sound like anything, but I realized we're doing things different, If i put my mind to it, it has roots based deep in other things. Blues isn't African, but thats its origin if you do that math historically and musically.
