Fantasti9c song. Love Brook Benton's voice. The film ( saw in 1962 and tonite again ) is tops. Great actors and the introduction is a sequence of a black cat walking....on the wild side, of course ! Great film.

I have just finished watching the film again; atmospheric and mesmerising. Then Benton's voice is introduced and the whole thing enters another dimension, jazzy and dare I say just a bit sleazy.

Great song! From the 1962 movie starring Jane Fonda, Barbara Stanwyck, Laurence Harvey, etc.

Walk On the Wild Side. Just watched it last night for the first time. Great film. Hated the ending though; so sad.

Correction: Elmer Bernstein and Mack David were nominated for an Oscar. However, the Oscar for Best Song that year was "Days of Wine and Roses" by Henry Mancini and Johnny Mercer. Both songs were award-worthy.

This song has haunted me since I was a kid. I saw it with my parents at a drive in theater. I fell asleep for the movie but not for the song. The lyrics, "the chances of getting to heaven 6:1." Is the best and scariest.

Just watched Piers Morgan on Monaco and an instrumental version of this song was on the soundtrack. Having recently seen a compilation of Saul Bass’ title sequences and recognized it, Googled “the odds against going to heaven” and landed here. Turns out Marvin Gaye covered it.

I wonder what the young men doing the "reaction" videos would think of this piece or maybe some of the work by Paul Robeson, Arthur Prysock or Al hibbler. Not that would be fun to watch!

I had it in my mind that Elmer Bernstein was related to Leonard Bernstein, but I have found that this not true.
