      I like to think of Honda engines as masochists, you beat the ever living out of them and they just beg for more. Everytime you engage a new gear, it just asks you, "Come on, redlining once won't hurt..."

    “This is a car that demands the drivers full attention”. He nailed it. As an S2000 owner, it requires so much full concentration it can almost be exhausting to drive . But if you’re in the right mood there’s nothing else like it.

      Modern classic. They will never make a roadster like this ever again unfortunately. Checks all the boxes. exciting n/a engine, double wishbone suspension, well-engineered chassis with backbone structure, handling, weight distribution, perfect shifter, attractive rwd proportions, honda reliability. I hope to get one in the future, but I missed the sweet spot before this car was really appreciated and prices skyrocketed. The only thing negative I ever heard about this car was that I sometimes hear mixed reviews on the steering feel from the electric power steering. Some say there's great feel (like here in this episode of motorweek) and some other reviewers say that while it's quick and direct, it still lacks a bit of feel and connection. I know it's subjective, hence the mixed reviews, and reviewers sometimes test several cars back to back which can affect how they rate their experiences, but what has been your own experience with the steering?

    • @fhowland
      @fhowland 10 месяцев назад +1

      @@Jeff_F7 the steering feel is definitely the weakest point of the car. I probably paid too much for mine in 2021 but unmolested low mileage ones in Laguna pearl blue are hard to find. They shot up big time after 2019 or so.

    • @Jeff_F7
      @Jeff_F7 10 месяцев назад +1

      @@fhowland thanks for the reply. Is yours an AP1 or AP2? Although the AP2's 2.2L has more torque, some say the 2.0L F20C is a little bit more exciting with the 9000 rpm redline and that the handling on the AP1 is just a little bit more lively. It's funny that there's such a mixed consensus on the steering. Is it a huge factor in the experience? Or do the other qualities of the car make up for the steering? And, is the lack of steering feel such that you don't know what the front end is doing and there is a slight lack of connection to the road, or is it a relative thing (i.e. there may be some lack of feel, but compared to other cars, there is still good feel, but it just could be better)?

    • @fhowland
      @fhowland 10 месяцев назад +1

      @@Jeff_F7 I have AP2, it’s the one to get IMO. Less frantic to drive.. it’s a low torque car.. the AP1 is downright slow in regular driving. Even an MX5 feels faster than an AP2 unless you’re driving it all-out. Steering being dead is annoying but not a deal breaker for me.

Everyone that hates on Honda always talks about no bottom end torque, and "meh" acceleration, but they completely miss the point: Honda builds some of the best momentum cars on the planet! That is the thing I love so much about Honda, once you build the speed up, you don't have to bleed it off nearly as much as the average car once things turn twisty ;) That is the thing that makes older Honda cars so damned enjoyable. The S2000 just happens to give you a bit more of a chance to enjoy a bit of drifting, if your heart so desires :)

      +MPGomatic Not really great either....Most cars need about 5-7k to be really broken in (I mean, 1000 miles a typical break in, but Im talking performance.....) and able to run those numbers. Well past break in mileage and a few oil changes in is when you can really give it some beans.

    this car is a modern classic. One of the best roadsters ever made. That sweet n/a engine, rwd, perfect weight distribution, relatively lightweight, nice attractive rwd proportions (long hood, short deck), ideal-for-a-sports car double wishbone suspension, lively engaging handling with sharp responses that challenges the driver (particularly the 1st gen AP1 with the 2.0L like this one), one of the best shifters in the world. They'll never make a car like this ever again unfortunately. this car is capable of much faster 0-60 and 1/4 mile times too (0-60 in the mid 5 sec range for a good driver to high 5 sec with a normal driver that knows how to launch it properly and high 13's to low 14 sec in the quarter mile for a healthy stock car). Motorweek test drivers didn't always have the best launches in those older motorweek episodes. Many times, when launching a car with a manual, they bogged the motor rather than correctly finding the sweet spot of revs, and clutch release /slip to get the tires to sort of lose a tiny bit of grip (not produce wheelspin, just where you hear the tires chirp and hop a little bit) to keep the engine's revs up and in the powerband as the car moves forward. This is even more critical when you have a small displacement 4 banger with low torque at lower revs as the engine will easily bog if you get it even slightly wrong. You can hear in this video that they bogged the motor. It was hit or miss with motorweek back then as far as performance test numbers.

    When Honda had so many fun sports cars and coupes! I miss those days, Honda makes boring snooze worthy boxes now that no young audience wants. They either need to wake up and get back to their roots and make fun good looking cars people want or start loosing market share. Hyundai is making huge leaps, sure they are no where near Honda size, but they sure are moving up fast!

    • @oldtwins
      @oldtwins 9 лет назад +1

      They continue to make fun cars. The market has changed - 2 seater roadsters that deliver dismal gas mileage are not what the public wants. Instead, you can have good sedans like the Accord V6 - 34mph highway and will do low 14's in the quarter mile.

    • @Wallstreetavarice
      @Wallstreetavarice 9 лет назад +7

      oldtwins If you consider the accord v6 fun to drive in comparison to the s2000 then I'm almost positive you've never been in or drive one. The accord is a good car, but it's by no means an enthusiasts car or a good representative of what makes a car fun to drive.

    • @oldtwins
      @oldtwins 9 лет назад +1

      Wallstreetavarice Yea, whatever. I'll take a current Accord V6 6MT over an S2000 for my only car. Faster car, way better torque for everyday driving, better gas mileage, and far more room for everyday driving. Best value out there on the market today. You know, some of us have to pay for our cars and expenses, not have it given to us on a silver platter.
