Genesis GV70 2023 driven review: Posh or just overpriced ? / Electrifying

  • The electric car revolution has seen a number of new car brands popping up to challenge the status quo.
Everything from Polestars to Ora Cats, Rivians to Genesiseses
    (Genesii?)
So is the new blood a good thing, or should we stick to established names? Genesis is a brand that is the posh, upscale version of the Hyundai / Kia megacorporation.
It’s actually been building its own cars since about 2015, but only entered the European
market last year. We have already seen a couple of saloons and SUVs with internal
combustion engines, but they are a rare sight. The GV60 SUV was the first pure electric
effort from the company, and it was followed up by the more conventional G80 saloon.
This is the next part of the company’s plan - the Electrified GV70.
As you may have guessed, it’s bigger than the GV60 but it shares its body with petrol
models, which means there are some compromises.
But it is fast, charges quickly and has some excellent tech. The way Genesis sells cars is
    interesting too.
Join Tom as he puts the UK-specification Electrified GV70 through its paces. Should it
be on your wish list for 2023 or should you stick with the well-known brands?
    Genesis Electrified GV70
    From: £64,405
    483bhp, 700Nm torque
    All-wheel drive, 1-spd 4.2 seconds 0-62mph, 146mph top speed
74.0kWh battery (usable), 283 miles range WLTP
233kw DC, 11kw AC, 18 min fast DC (approx 155 miles of range added), 65min 50kW,
11hr 45 mins on home wallbox
    Weight: 2,310kg
    Boot: 503-litres (1,678 seats folded)
    Frunk: 25-litres

Whilst people commenting are raising an eyebrow over cost, Genesis are the posh part of the Hyundai group. They are aiming at the high end of the market. Much cheaper and probably better than a Range Rover. Genesis intend to go all electric so I expect the next version of this will be much better. Shorter bonnet for more internal space. The only thing I dislike are fake grills on EVs.

  • @MrFatknacker

Great review - I used to be a big fan of EV specific platforms, however I ended up with a Mercedes EQC which to me feels more comfortable, refined and quiet than the comparable EV specific alternatives I tried at the time - ok so you lose some leg room space at the rear, no Frunk and there is a big hump which compromises the middle rear seat and reduces storage… but because I’m nearly 60 I actually quite like a big centre console thing… plus you get REAL buttons! So this GV70 seems to be the EQC with things like the range and charging speed limitations resolved 🙂

    • @tomwookieford8445
      @tomwookieford8445 Год назад +2

there's an awful lot to like about it - I had an EQA for a while and thought I'd dislike it because of legacy issues, but it was a really great little car. The only problem is that the specific BEV stuff was cheaper and had advantages. How's the EQC doing?

  • @tknox39

This car would be a huge hit in the US. Many of us want to make the change without changing everything ( if that makes any sense ). It's the traditional approach that I like. I think Genesis got it right 👍. As far as the cost it's actually on par if not cheaper than its rivals in the same luxury segment. I really like it.

Nice review Tom, thanks for this one. I’d like to say, though, the older I get and the more cars I drive or haven driven, I tend to lean more into the interior aspects of a car. I mean, this is where you spend 98% of the time, isn‘ it? Car reviews in general spend a ton of time describing the design - which is fine - and then mention in one sentence how quiet the car is. But that‘s what I care about after all. It‘s the experience you make every single day. How the suspension feels, how the interior materials feel like to touch, how smooth and quiet the driving is. It‘s that experience of luxury and comfort you‘re actually paying for.

Not much not to like, bar a few ‘ICE’ hangovers and that £65-70k price. But the 5-year Ionity package sounds a winner… good work Genesis!

👍👍Entirely agree with your judgement! It’s a well-executed, but fairly conventional car, and a very very heavy one as well at 2.350 kg. The boost button I disliked in the GV60 as well, not usable in a curve. More than any other car reviewer, you stand for a very independent view on all cars you drive: while others sound like the marketing department of the respective manufacturer, you point to the plusses and minusses in great detail without insulting the engineer for his work. Great review, thank you!

Super-handsome car, great colour, big grille, big wheels. Might make you look twice to check whether it's a Bentley SUV while on the move (bonus points). I do like the double-line headlights and tail lights. The interior looks plush and good quality, but if you've seen a three year old Hyundai interior, they do tend to get scratched and bashed about, and look old quickly. I look forward to them updating the eGV70 to the E-GMP platform to get rid of that transmission tunnel front and rear (albeit reduced in the rear from the regular GV70), improving frunk space if they are keeping that very long hood and improving efficiency - I heard 2.5mi/kWh and that must be down to weight. It has the same Cd as the GV60 0.29 but weighs 155Kg more than the AWD Sports Plus version of same BHP while only bring 20cm longer.
If that boot space isn’t really needed ( I don’t think there is much difference in rear cabin space between the eGV70 and GV60) by the owner and the aesthetics of the GV60 are palatable to the potential owner I’m not sure why you’d go for the eGV70 in its current guise.
Yeah tri-climate, passenger massage seat, opening sun roof and 3D dials was there anything else it had over the GV60? £74K for the fully loaded GV60 and I heard nearly £90K for the fully loaded eGV70!

In my view of the styling alone, it seems a shame that design looks so dated compared with the fresh looks of the Hyundai Ioniq 5 and Kia EV6. Then the packaging that's based on a less space efficient ICE car when that same organisation has EV specific platforms available for use. What a wasted opportunity from a parent company that has taken leaps and bounds in their product line up over this last couple of years. Good review but certainly not to the level of detail to really get one excited. Would have been nice to have some summary table of range, acceleration, kWH battery size(s), and actual charging curves. Manufacturer charging curves are done in ideal conditions. Actual charging time is typically 10 to 20% or more longer than published data. Like all EV’s the cost is outrageous and not for typical consumers. As far as ICE design features, not the end of the world. It is a way for a manufacturer to get models that are EV’s within a shorter design cycle. Seems EV manufacturers are trying to come up with marketing strategies to tempt people to buy EV’s. The only reason for the EV requirements is the mistaken environmentalists who think the world is going to end in 30 years due to CO/CO2 emissions. Weather forecasters can’t accurately predict the weather/climate a month from now, let alone 30 years from now. EV technology seems like it has advantages over ICE but doesn’t seem viable for most consumers at the increased price tag. With increasing interests rates people are going to have to start taking out 15 year loans for the “privilege” of driving something that doesn’t really provide any real financial or personal life benefits in getting from point A to point B.
