      how am i gonna train like i should following your advice when there are no powerbatics communities in our country that i know of coach Lee?
      i wanna do what you do, but i wanna do it under your watchful eye so i can learn from you everything that i need to do.... and not do😔

    Don't let the title fool you. The main idea is to fill in the gaps where calisthenics fails (he says this himself later in the vid).

    I disagree. How do you know strength/athleticism isn’t being gained when doing calisthenics? It’s anecdotal and subjective. For me personally, I gained immense strength, mobility, flexibility, and athleticism once I started doing cali’s 13mo ago and been weight lifting for 15 years. I love your videos but this one didn’t do anything for me.

      He never said those things won't be built he is basically saying add variety to your workouts you may be able to do a hollow body hold but can u mirror it with a back bridge? Powerbatics training will definitely help you with Cali and lifting.

      It's all individual. For me it answers the question I've been asking myself lately. I'm training calisthenics for about 1 year, now I feel weaker after every session. My training focussed to much on one specific point instead of movement itself, now I know for sure..

      1. Athleticism is typically referring to competitive sport or one's ability to perform at that level and not fitness/exercise. Strength, flexibility, and mobility are but singular aspects, in addition to power (a form of strength), skill (strength applied), and sustainability (strength over long term). This is part of the problem many see in Crossfit, i.e. that they tried to turn fitness into a sport. It's just not the same thing. Sport has a high degree of variability and unpredictability, which traditional calisthenics (not freestyle or competitive) as a modality of *fitness* simply does not have, which is why we use Ninja Strength (similar to calisthenics) as but 1 element of Powerbatics training. We understood its 1-dimensionality from the very get-go. And that's part of why we built katas into each element...to foster the other aspects of strength such as skill, sustainability, etc.
      2. If by anecdotal and subjective you mean 1000's of data points, 1000's of students (many of whom are competitive athletes and performers), and nearly a decade officially (unofficially 30 years of teaching)...then sure 😂

      Btw, nobody really needs to get bent out of shape...train however you want, it's not the end of the world.

    That's why I am practising not only calisthenics but animal flow, breakdancing, inline skating, capoeira, tai chi even juggling and now powerbatics. All these things are developing you in so many different ways.

    I agree that calisthenics culture is dogmatic about maintaining strict form and most movements are performed in the sagittal plane with little focus on transverse and other rotations. This has become a much more pronounced issue for me over the last year. Calisthenics should be about building strength and dynamism in movements, and increasing range of motion and achieving your bodies optimal functional potential. Ring based Gymnastics is the closest and ancestoral relative to calisthenics and is about connecting skills and allowing things to flow in a rhthym and unfortunately this was lost somewhere in the evolutionary path, and isometric skill movements are seen as the pinnacle of calisthenic success.

      Interesting, are you saying that calisthenics was the ancestor of gymnastics? I always thought the opposite. My training combines bits of both and some weights.

    Complete approach. As they say cover all bases, but I guess you could say cover all tendons, ligaments etc. I spent years just lifting weights. Back 3 months lifting weights after 8 years off, microdisectomy L5-S1, back is tight, use to seize up every now and again, I’d hardly be able to move for a week, carnivore diet 6 months, inflammation has gone and back feels a lot better but still tight. just had MRI neck have 2 minor- moderate budging discs C3-C4 & C5-C6. I’ve been watching your vids for almost a week, signed up, my lower back is stiff & I admit very weak core, can’t even do a back bridge, flexion is poor. Just got to start very basics, making lists and working out progressions from your videos. Superman, bridges, reverse grip hangs, hollow holds.

    Thanks Lee, you really put some good things into perspective and I totally agree with you. As you always say you're only as strong as your weakest link. I've experienced this time and time again with many different injuries and I am someone who tries to work on every part of my body and always challenged it and new ways to keep getting stronger

    Tried some of the beginner katas, they are killer! But by working on many of the athletics statics those katas can improve, I think calisthenics is just a modern word for part of athletics, which give a great base to develop more smart training systems, and this can not be a bad thing in my humble opinion, any way thank you for inspiration 🙌💪

      How did katas go? Basically I'm trying to share more depth that connects movement, coordination, etc. so people can understand how to get to higher, more creative levels. Static, calisthenics-oriented like Ninja Strength, etc. are just a small piece of the puzzle.

      @@LeeWeiland Yeah, even a print-out PDF or ring-bound book with basic photos, organized by progressive movements would be a nice thing. Trying to avoid screens while doing workouts, but following along with the videos or writing down the progressions/katas is cumbersome. I know, I know it's an excuse, but - just sayin', someone would buy the book ;)

    I just finished an offload weak and decided to hit a frog stand while watching this. I Accidently leaned too far forward and had to hit a bent arm tuck handstand in a split second to control it and avoid a face plant. That ninja strength is no joke 😂Great vid Lee👍🏿👍🏿

      Nice. I say things are "magic" because students often "accidentally" hit new moves. Example: front flip and as soon as you land hop half turn. Students will accidentally start landing front flip half twist. There's hundreds of these examples and frog stand is one. Frog stand for 60 seconds a day beats wall handstand every time. But people won't do the boring silly looking stuff.

    Combining the building of strength in the basics, weight training, bodybuilding and those Katas you mentioned sounds pretty good to me. Stacking this on top of some sort of martial art would build me a pretty damn athletic physique.
    Would a more freestyle approach to those Katas be an appropriate or good alternative however?
    And how about weak link training? Overloading exercises and positions that a majority would deem dangerous, what are your thoughts on that?

    Calestnics is at least using th3 hole b9dy and core all9ng with any exercise hich is lack8ng big time in power lifting that's isolating muscles 2hich is lese than one dimension

    This modern world we live in is destroying me does anyone else in the western world want a total culture change? i wish there was some kind of retreat, group of people or different city i can move to where theres no internet, no fast food, active lifestyle and physical labour job. Theres so much corporate greed, fast food restaurants, beer stores and junk bombarded in our face today and its destroying people

      This video got to me. I hit a wall with weightlifting. The same wall I hit with Yoga - the moves are isolated and improvement is on apparently within the limited range of the exercises. Calisthenics seemed to be a better direction for me, but you're right - it is still isolated and geared towards the "peak" moves like muscle up, planche, front-lever, etc.

    The program reminds me of Ginastica Natural and Integral Bambu. The former, a Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu sólo movement and mobility based flow incorporating animal and gymnastics like movements conducive to grappling athleticism. The latter is a system of navigating through a complex bamboo pole structure with one’s whole body requiring strength, agility, and momentum, clinging at times and fluid whole body motions at other times. This is also rooted in Brazilian workout culture.

      In some regards yes. But the wear and tear on joints will require upkeep through a Ninja Strength style training.

    hello @LeeWeiland i train 6 days a week i do a push pull legs calisthenics ofc but should i do holds on one day and motion in another day for example frogpose and some other holds on Munday and on Thursdays i do different types of pushups or should i just mise them together and time is not a problem for me btw

      Where? I rarely even use the word "calisthenics." It's just a tool, and a tool can be used for good or bad. We teach Powerbatics...and Ninja Strength (similar to calisthenics) is just 1 element therein.

    How can I prevent tendonitis, that's my biggest obstacle that always sets me way back when I'm in the middle of training. Training according to body feeling doesn't work I never really get muscle soreness and have no useful feedback from the body on how long I need to take a break. My new approach now is to create a sophisticated training plan and stay 30% below muscle failure in 90% of the training time. Do you have any experience with this? Your athletes do training that looks extremely hard and super prone to tendonitis.
