Why we need to teach law in schools | Kate Offer | TEDxUWA

Do you know which laws govern your everyday life? Most people don’t. But even if you don’t know what those laws are, you are still bound by them. Without legal literacy, people don’t know how to avoid legal problems or what to do when one arises. Kate Offer proposes a solution; to start teaching the basics of everyday law in schools. Kate Offer is a Senior Lecturer and Deputy Head of School (Learning & Teaching) at the Law School at the University of Western Australia. Her teaching focus is Torts, Evidence and Legal APPtitude (a legal app creation unit) as well as the undergraduate broadening unit, Adulting: Law for Everyday Lives. She publishes in the areas of Evidence, Torts, and Legal Education. She holds the role of Director of Applied Technology at the UWA Law School, a role focusing on the intersection of Law and Technology. Kate has been awarded School, University, national and international teaching awards, including the national Australian Legal Education Awards Excellence in Teaching award in 2022. They should teach laws you can go to jail for in in high school before you turn 18
