Implying the heavy emphasis on constant movement while dealing enough damage to run), special infected (Hunter punishes Louis because he ran away from the group) and I think they also added the audio cues and themes when the horde and special infected appear. Sadly, L4D2 skips this for a more action focused introduction.
L4d2 intro imo had the purpose to introduce new characters, environments and especially the new special infected. I think it would have been pointless to reintroduce those game mechanics all the players already knew about.

Yep, haven't stop playing since 2008, both L4D1 and 2 will always be two of my most favorite games. Thanks for taking the time to make this video, I enjoyed the quality commentary.
Not sure why this showed up on my recommendation feed, but this video highlights what B4B did not do for sure. Hard to believe that is a turtle rock product tbh.
Leading players on a string through GAMEPLAY is the next gen innovation I keep looking for in games. Sadly, studios keep thinking that pretty pictures are all it takes.
Amazing video. One thing I would like to add is the music in L4D. If you pay attention it can notify you when a horde is inbound, what infected has spawned in etc. Really engaging players one step further
And then Turtle rock throws out a bunch of these design philosophies in Back 4 Blood. Characters now have special abilities in Back 4 Blood and it's dumb
Left 4 Dead was amazing. I didn't even play it much. I had it on the 360, and played in for maybe 9 hours in my entire life, but I remember. I remember it as an adrenaline filled frenzy. It's been years, longer than most college degrees, but I remember the fun.
It's so weird to me that no one ever seems to talk about VS mode when talking about what made left 4 dead great. I always found it had the perfect balance of the AI director and humans combining to give an additional sense of menace as the humans and the special infected were so much fun to play.
I mentioned it in another comment but I did originally mention VS mode but it went over many of the same rules and guidelines as the campaign. Made it feel repetitive, so I had to cut it.
I played Left 4 dead 1 and 2 for the longest time, and to be honest. I don't think i'll stop anytime soon.. Sure there will be long breaks from the game but after a while i'm bound to go back and play it again.
You can observe the importance of using light to guide the player in some custom campaigns that make the same mistake TRS originally did. I've played several maps before that took forever to find my way through because everything was lit. Light had no meaning and there was no difference between the correct path and a side path. It's a really basic yet crucial lesson all map makers should adhere to.
The TheBestPlayerEver has joined the game TheBestPlayerEver Rush alone Smoker incap TheBestPlayerEver TheBestPlayerEver : help me you f*cking NOOB other team : but you far away TheBestPlayerEver left the game Smoker killed coach survivor minus 1 survivor : wth
The music thou, the MOST nerve-wracking moment I ever had in games is when the ending music starts playing as someone start screaming at me "TANK'S FULL, GET IN!!!" as zombies started screeching
this explains so much. why i was never lost, why i could easily find my way around, etc. whereas in community maps, where mostly the maps would look good but the fine-tuned techniques werent there such as guiding players with light, me and my friends would often get lots. we often had to go in circles, whilst dealing with hordes, and just end up wasting time and precious resources and barely stay alive cuz of it
Don't get me wrong, this is my favorite game and I still play it to this day, but this whole "STAY-TOGETHER" design is a bit overrated. Once you're fluent with the mechanics and know the maps, you'll notice that you're capable of beating the maps even solo, except the parts when you die to bad RNG and general inconsistency with the SI. Smokers immediately pulling you right after a bullshit spawn, jockeys that will ignore your M2 50% of the time even when your timing seems perfect, hunters scratching you for 40 hp even though you knocked them back, the list goes on. Special infected being able to spawn at any moment behind any wall is pretty fun most of the time, but sometimes the spawns get so stupid that it just removes any tactic from the equation. It's like, you're not supposed to go alone, because a hunter will spawn behind a light pole and pounce you at the exact moment when you're trying to block a jockey. Technically you can just get attacked by 3 SI out of nowhere during a horde, so the optimal strat is basically to stick to melee against common infected, so that you always have a full clip against SI, which doesn't sound like good design at all. Again, I genuinely consider L4D the best zombie shooter, but this video just repeats stuff that has been said about the game ages ago, rather than a relevant analysis.
Omfg I HATE expert hunters... Such assholes they are. Especially on Last Man on Earth. You get pinned in that mode (on expert) there is a 90% chance you are dead...
Don't forget the flabby backhand slap from a charger when they charged into a wall and they stumble around in which they SHOULDN'T be able to do anything, bam 20 damage, or was it 15 or expert. But yeah, those 40 damage hunter scratches were just ridiculous, you knock them back, you see them stumble backwards and without any animation you hear a scratch and get 40.
It’s super overrated. I said this in another comment; diehard fans of the game act as though playing the game is like journeying through the jungle in Vietnam worrying about the cong coming from the trees Praise is definitely in order but the depth and difficulty of the campaign game is vastly overstated imo
@@charleswashington3973 Difficulty is laughable at best, the only way any semi experienced players get killed on realism expert is if the spawn director completely fucks them over. Khomchik cheats I used to think he was epic too but it’s very obvious he’s rather shit at the game.
Honestly, I still prefer the aesthetic and zombie designs of the first game.
But they didn't do the same to the second game because they wanted to try something new instead of a grey depressing aesthetic but instead a more bright, comedic and Badass/kickass feel and it works
@@aldrichhf35 Yes, I know. Just saying I prefer the original. Hell, I never liked he plastic-y look the zombies had in 2.

of course this gets recommended after back 4 blood happened
launch day l4d: 4 survivors of zombie apocalypse shooting endless zombies
today l4d: 4 anime virtual youtubers shooting different monster from minecraft
god i love this game!
This was the game along with L4D2 where i met so many of my friends on steam. The amount of hours that we put it all trying to get every achievement, the absolute terror and even the masterful plays during versus mode. The list goes on and on. I never once had a bad time playing this game.
It’s a shame they couldn’t get the same magic for back 4 blood
because Valve weren't involved like the last time that is why B4B is soulless garbage Valve were the ones who carried L4D Turtle Rock were just the guys with the Idea only 6 Devs from Turtle Rock worked on L4D the rest of the all Devs were Valves Turtle Rock are the creators of Evolve they are not the creators of L4D as they claim

Me and my friends/brother still play online together, and have lots of fun but not really the same since I moved away. I probably shouldn't have typed a paragraph when I just woke up and I'm getting ready for work.
@@the_more_you_know_8452 damn. I wish everyone went back to the 360 and ps3 for just one day. It would be fun everyone playing together again like in the old days. I actually still play the 360 to this day. It's the only console I bought and owned.
I have been playing this game since release and still am to this very day with friends!
Nice video man, I have always felt the amount of work that was put into this game was underappreciated.
Thank you! Glad someone else felt the same way I do.

Same here! I just hope they learned from their mistakes with Evolve.
@@CoreIdeas spoiler: they didn’t
Amazing video. One thing I would like to add is the music in L4D. If you pay attention it can notify you when a horde is inbound, what infected has spawned in etc. Really engaging players one step further
And none of this carried to Back 4 blood
And then Turtle rock throws out a bunch of these design philosophies in Back 4 Blood. Characters now have special abilities in Back 4 Blood and it's dumb
Well done man, good structure and pacing.
Thank you! Worked hard to make sure the pacing was on point.
Brilliant video wish there was more high quality content about left 4 dead on RUclips like this.
Thank you so much! I did notice there was a slight shortage of L4D video essays.
I always play this name no matter what! it's in my soul for years now. :D
Left 4 Dead was amazing. I didn't even play it much. I had it on the 360, and played in for maybe 9 hours in my entire life, but I remember. I remember it as an adrenaline filled frenzy. It's been years, longer than most college degrees, but I remember the fun.
L4D2 is one of my favorite games ever
Oh absolutely! The opening cinematic gives me chills every time.
@@CoreIdeas Indeed, i always stick around to watch the opening as it sets the mood before the game starts.
@@CoreIdeas Ahh, I'm glad it not being talked about was deliberate rather than an accidental oversight.

The music thou, the MOST nerve-wracking moment I ever had in games is when the ending music starts playing as someone start screaming at me "TANK'S FULL, GET IN!!!" as zombies started screeching
Best wishes to TRS on Back 4 Blood.
this explains so much. why i was never lost, why i could easily find my way around, etc. whereas in community maps, where mostly the maps would look good but the fine-tuned techniques werent there such as guiding players with light, me and my friends would often get lots. we often had to go in circles, whilst dealing with hordes, and just end up wasting time and precious resources and barely stay alive cuz of it
Don't get me wrong, this is my favorite game and I still play it to this day, but this whole "STAY-TOGETHER" design is a bit overrated.
@@Patrick_The_Pure The AI special infected literally cheat xD
It’s super overrated. I said this in another comment; diehard fans of the game act as though playing the game is like journeying through the jungle in Vietnam worrying about the cong coming from the trees
Praise is definitely in order but the depth and difficulty of the campaign game is vastly overstated imo
@@charleswashington3973
Difficulty is laughable at best, the only way any semi experienced players get killed on realism expert is if the spawn director completely fucks them over. The biggest threat are your teammates hitting you on accident for your entire hp in one shot.
Completely agree with you, it was an amazing game, i still play it, but every time i get back i notice more and more stuff i get frustrated with. Game is aging fast
