I had a total laparoscopic hysterectomy 16 weeks ago .I was in outpatient but had to stay overnight and was released that pm . I still don’t understand how nurse’s work! I was told every shift I’m your nurse then they disappeared and others would come to check IV, draw blood . Isn’t it interesting how everyone’s hospital experience can be so wildly different. I hope you’re recovering well now. It’s always a good idea to stay out of the hospital if you can :-)
I'm having a total hysterectomy in a few weeks. This is very helpful, thanks. I'm supposed to leave about 4 hours after surgery. Do you think the car ride home is going to suck? I'm pretty nervous about that (crappy streets in Boston still have a ton of potholes).
You are not the one driving right ?!?! That wouldn’t even be possible. At that time hopefully you will still feel pretty drugged from the hospital. Certainly ask about that to ensure pain management. But I am sure it will not be a comfortable experience.
@@nathanandtiffany No, my husband will be driving, of course! I will ask them about it, and maybe bring a pillow to hold over my abdomen for counter pressure? I remember my friend saying that felt good after her abdominal surgery when she had to cough...

Thank you for sharing your experience. I am getting surgery soon too and am terrified of the anesthesia. Can you maybe explain what you remember about that part? Were you still awake in the surgery room up until the moment they administered the anesthesia? Can you describe what it felt like, if you can remember? Thanks so much in advance and all the best to you as you recover!
I can definitely describe it. Because I’ve anesthesia before for a tonsillectomy as an adult as well as an ACL reconstruction of my knee. Sometimes they will give you Versed before in order to relax you. I elected not to have it for this because I wasn’t nervous but if you’ are you may choose to do that. Then I went in the surgical suite where I had Propofol through my IV, You’ll feel a slightly warm sensation through your hand and then it’s like someone draws a curtain over you. You’re out before you even know it. When you wake up you’re kind of groggy and it’s a little strange but it’s not a scary experience. I was very lucky all of the medical staff was amazing as well. So hopefully you have that same experience.
A long time ago a close relative of mine died under anesthesia. He and his brother were both young and very fit, athletic in fact. But, he died under anesthesa, which was not just sad, but proved devastating to my family. So, you can perhaps, understand, that I too was very leary about the idea of having a General Anesthetic for the first time in my life at the age if 73, for a D&C, hysterscopy and biopsy. To put it mildly I was terrified. My Anesthetist was a very funny guy, aware of my family history and decided to use pediatric medicines for me. My hysterectomy will be in less than two weeks from today. After my first General Anesthetic experience I can safely say, it was nothing to worry about, and now that I know what to expect, I will just relax next time, and imagine a beautiful place. For me, that was daffodils dancing in the breeze among silver birch trees, a bit like Wordsworth's poem, and with that I drifted off, only to wake up in the Recovery Room. I really needed someone to tell me what it would be like, but nobody ever did. So I can very much understand your fear, but you will be fine. I read a couple of books on mindfulness and living in the moment, which were very helpful. I have also read a book called, 'Radical Remission, ' by Kelly Turner, PhD. , because I have Endometrial Cancer, which my mother and her sister both survived fifty years ago, both lived well into their eighties. The book tells about the nine things people did to bring about their remissions. I am incorporating several of those suggestions into my own life. I focus on today, and plan for the future, which I am confident will be bright. I wish you the very best and hope you will take comfort from knowing my experience.

Hi Yolanda, that does sound like a really hard situation. I do have a couple of thoughts. Have you expressed this concern to your surgeon? I would mention it again at the hospital nurse/case manager. Because sometimes you can get someone from home health to come and assist you at least for a little while. It may only be an hour a day but could be helpful. You can also look into a service when you hire someone to come to your house for a couple of hours to make sure that everything is going well. These services are available outside of you insurance as well. If you have a faith, consider reaching out to your church to see if anyone would be willing to assist you. Things you could do personally. Trying to pre-make some simple meals that would be very easy to reheat. Things like soups, mashed potatoes, Jell-O, pudding, or what ever you enjoy etc. I would also consider making up a bed that you don’t have to go up or down stairs. Maybe you have your groceries delivered rather than going to get them in the beginning. In other words before you have your surgery, try and figure out the things that might be difficult and see if you can create a situation that would make them easier or done before surgery date. For me the gas pain resolved in the hospital so I did not have that at home. As far as the pain is concerned, take the medication that was prescribed to you. My prescription was only an over-the-counter, but it seemed to help a lot. However, if you wait until the pain is really bad and don’t take it as prescribed sometimes it is very hard to get ahead of. Also things that help are things like meditation, mindfulness, breathing exercises. Getting up and doing normal things really helpful too. And very small doses. Like taking a shower, walking around your house. In the beginning, nothing strenuous, but it does help to move your body just a little bit.
Thank you for sharing your story..im 16 days post op after a full hysterectomy..its only now i feel im coming around and eating little portions again..i had terrible problems with gas pain...
Hi sorry for this question, but why did they blow up your stomach with air? Was that part of the sedation? I'm having surgery soon and I'm so nervous 😓
They do that so that they can see inside you better. It creates separation of the organs. It can make the maneuvering easier for the surgeon. Yes you are sedated when they do it. Good luck.
Another thing when i had hysterectomy i couldnt sleep in my bed, i had to sleep in my recliner for 10 days. It was difficult. Luckily my mom lives with me so i had help
You know, I don’t actually know how long it was. Because I was alone in the hospital and I was all drugged up. I didn’t really have anyone to tell me how long it took. So sorry I don’t have a good answer for that.
My gyn said total procedure will be about 45. But for me to tell my husband it will be all over after about 2 hrs. That includes prep time etc. so he will know how long he will have to wait for me to come out of surgery.
Versed - sedation medication. Often given prior to your medication that puts you to sleep. Mine was Propofol. No shot in the back. Just sedation via the IV once in OR.
I just didn’t feel that I needed it. I was not nervous and it is used to calm you and make you comfortable. I also had it before my tonsillectomy as an adult and it made my heart rate go very low.
Thanks alot to share your experience 🤗 well my question is that catheter removal is painful?? And when they remove it i have surgery in 2 weeks i was so nervous but your videos are so helpful 🤗
The catheter removal for me was not painful at all! It was a slightly odd sensation, but there was not even one bit of pain. In case you’re unfamiliar with how that works is they insert the tube which is about the size of your urethra and they inflate a balloon inside your bladder to keep it inside. When they remove it they deflate the balloon and just slide it right out.
Thank you so much for your kind reply 🙂 so sweet of you well im 42 from Europe i have 8cm fibroid and one 2cm and I'm scared if I'll have open myomectomy once fibroids can regrow and i dont want to go through that trauma or surgery again and again my dr suggested me to have hysterectomy but still i have question it will be abdominal hysterectomy viginal hysterectomy or laparoscopic I'm so scared and confuse first i decided i will not have epidural only general anesthesia now i have to choose between myomectomy or hysterectomy if hysterectomy which one open viginal hysterectomy or laparoscopic 🥺 please suggest me if something you can 🙂regards
@@szee2222 the best thing for me was I asked my doctor what she would do if it was her body. Maybe you could ask your doctor the same question. Because both procedures have their pluses and minuses. The laparoscopic doesn’t have such a large abdominal incision but if you have concerning pathology and you can’t get the uterus out in one piece, that might be a factor. That’s why I chose an abdominal and open procedure.
Hi well today i met my dr and asked the same as you told dr if I'm yours family member what you will recomend to me as he is a male dr surgeon he said i will suggest you to have hysterectomy because u are 42 and you can have more fibroids in 8 to 9 years and open hysterectomy is best option so now im ok with it ...but please tell me after surgery do you feel any changes in body ? Or weight gain as I'm reading alot about it many women telling different things please let me know regards
Did you choose to have an open hysterectomy? I'm having a laparascopic hysterectomy in two weeks and im afraid is gonna end up being an open abdominal hysterectomy.
The actual surgery itself? I’m actually not sure. Because I was alone at the hospital and I was all drugged up. I didn’t have anyone to tell me how long it took. So I’m not really sure.
Hi can anyone tell what are the side effects of hysterectomy or advantage. Bcz i have large fibroid and operated 3times but it again regrew now by god grace i have one baby and my age is 34.so pls suggest is there any side effect or I should wait more.

@@nathanandtiffany thank you for clarifying. Did you get nauseous or sick at all after the surgery?
I didn’t have any of that fortunately.
Has anyone had a hysterectomy for adenomyosis? Any negative side effects ?
That was not my experience. Hopefully someone watching can share their experience.
In which anesthesia?
I don’t understand your question.
Thank you so much stay blessed
I did choose to do that with consultation with my surgeon. I discuss the details of that in one of the other videos.
Good luck I'm having one on the 19Th
How long did it last
The actual surgery itself? I’m actually not sure. Because I was alone at the hospital and I was all drugged up. I didn’t have anyone to tell me how long it took. So I’m not really sure.
Thanks I have my surgery next week. I'm terribly scared!!!!!! But God!!!!
I wish you minimal pain and a quick recovery!
Hi can anyone tell what are the side effects of hysterectomy or advantage.

It is possible but uncommon. I do discuss that conversation in one of my videos.
It is possible but not common. I do discuss that in one of my videos.

I am so glad you found this helpful. If you’ve already had two C-sections, you pretty much know what to expect if this is an abdominal hysterectomy. Good luck and I wish you a very speedy recovery.

Is ir total?
I am sorry I don’t know what “ir” is. Can you rephrase your question please?
@dr.tiffanylamonde Is it a total hysterectomy? I had a total hysterectomy and so worried about the vaginal cuff.
@@GK-yz6bc mine was an open abdominal uterine. I still have my ovaries.
@dr.tiffanylamonde yes I have my ovaries. But the while uterus with cervix is gone. Do you have cervix? How do I keep the vaginal cuff safe?
@@GK-yz6bc no, I don’t have a cervix. I would actually direct you to working with a pelvic health therapist. That’s not my particular area of specialty. I do however have two people on staff. If that’s some thing that you wanted to talk about you could reach out to my clinic or any clinic near you that has a pelvic health specialist.
