Slipping Punches Like a Boxing Demon!

  • www.myboxingcoach.com - Slipping punches offers a world of opportunity in terms of making an opponent miss and creating killer openings. By definition, when a boxer successfully slips a punch, you are within range to land any of a battery of your own shots. By continually slipping punches, ducking punches and rolling (or the bob and weave) during a boxing match you make it very difficult for an opponent to target your head. Slipping punches also acts as a feint or diversion, which applies a constant level of pressure to the opponent during the contest.
It would be easy to consider slipping punches to be a reaction to a shot, as opposed to a proactive measure to control an opponent. It’s very unwise to wait for a shot to come in order to effectively slip that punch. Unless your opponent has terribly slow hand speed, then the laws of physics are very much against you. Slipping punches is about being proactive, not reactive.
When referring to slipping punches, I talk about slipping ‘inside’ and slipping ‘outside’. Slipping inside means that the body is shifted to the left of an oncoming straight shot (slips are a most effective defense against straight punches and uppercuts, although because of the slight drop in head height slips also offer some protection against hooks). Conversely, we consider slipping ‘outside’ to be shifting the body to the right of an oncoming jab. Check out the video, read the mechanics about slipping punches (inside and outside) and leave your comments below.

''be pro active don't wait for the punch'' I think that this sentence is the most valuable one for me. I always thought that I needed to try slip the punch like in a game.

But you can actually backhand - shield - slip and the pressure that now is on your front foot you profit for a leaping lead long range hook.
If you shield and then slip there is no problem.

efficient and offensive slipping: hip rotation, no neck movement or bending at the waist, economy of movement. Clearly demonstrated.

    • @condefamilytv2387

Actually he doesn't. Frankly this os EXACTLY the opposite of what happens in a real fight... Slipping is reactionary. To be quick enough for your head to move away from an accelerating fist, the head has to move first; the feet only moves to catch your balance. If you try to slip by moving your feet first, the compression of all body parts from the ball of the foot all the way to the neck will delay the moving of your head, thus making you as slow as this guy. Another thing he says here is that you should avoid putting your weight on the front foot. Again, that is wrong and that is exactly the OPPOSITE of what you want. You can launch forward with more momentum after shifting your weight onto the front foot (watch Tyson). Also, when your body weight is on the front foot, your head is also more upfront, giving you a longer distance to pull back and evade any incoming head punch. Lastly, bending at the waist is frowned upon in boxing, but if done properly, is a great way to conserve energy at gain faster head movement (see Hagler and Nocolino). Don't listen to this asshat, he'll get you knocked the f out.

The Boxing Bundle course has literally hundreds of these explanations. I absolutely love the "Common Faults" that he covers in all of the Core Boxing Skills.

Very well explained. The use of ‘Whole-Part-Whole’ to explain the key principles in the video was very helpful. A very high standard of teaching approaches used throughout this video.

great motion, movement and style, suited best for the Queensbury rules British style fighter, id like to see someone from the style of Mayweather phil shelley style boxer or the Tyson peek-a-boo style fighter, use this motion, i can see it takes your head off center on return and definitely works well but is limited by style, fighters like Roy jones with square shoulders, right hand is parallel with left, he slips from hips and rolls from knees, would be good to see if anyone using these styles could put this into practice.. i remember seeing nigel benn throwing a long straight right hand from his toes right through,,

Thanks! I was leaning like a 🌲 in the wind. Wasting all that energy. I will work on my slip for sure.

All good. Just remember not to set a pattern of slipping. Especially to the inside.

Great lesson! I was trying to find a video on how to slip the jab (orthodox vs orthodox) to the ouside (left of my oponent) while going into an angle (again, left) so I can counter with my jab or even with a over the top or straight right... I've seen southpaws do it (lomachenko) but i'm finding it hard to find a orthodox example... any sugestion? Cheers!

Hi, coach terrific video one question though, do i have to pivot on the balls of my feet when i slip, the same way i do when throw punches?

Can you slip inside a right cross? And what counters would you use if you did slip inside a right cross?
