Slipping Punches Like a Boxing Demon!

- www.myboxingcoach.com - Slipping punches offers a world of opportunity in terms of making an opponent miss and creating killer openings. By definition, when a boxer successfully slips a punch, you are within range to land any of a battery of your own shots. By continually slipping punches, ducking punches and rolling (or the bob and weave) during a boxing match you make it very difficult for an opponent to target your head. Slipping punches also acts as a feint or diversion, which applies a constant level of pressure to the opponent during the contest.
It would be easy to consider slipping punches to be a reaction to a shot, as opposed to a proactive measure to control an opponent. It’s very unwise to wait for a shot to come in order to effectively slip that punch. Unless your opponent has terribly slow hand speed, then the laws of physics are very much against you. Slipping punches is about being proactive, not reactive.
When referring to slipping punches, I talk about slipping ‘inside’ and slipping ‘outside’. Slipping inside means that the body is shifted to the left of an oncoming straight shot (slips are a most effective defense against straight punches and uppercuts, although because of the slight drop in head height slips also offer some protection against hooks). Conversely, we consider slipping ‘outside’ to be shifting the body to the right of an oncoming jab. Check out the video, read the mechanics about slipping punches (inside and outside) and leave your comments below. - Спорт
''be pro active don't wait for the punch'' I think that this sentence is the most valuable one for me. I always thought that I needed to try slip the punch like in a game.
@Denis Frampton ha ha ain't that the truth. First time in the ring is a sihocker innit
Hell nah. If you don't your opponent will. Power to you
Move your head or your opponent will move it for you lol
Me too. lol
But you can actually backhand - shield - slip and the pressure that now is on your front foot you profit for a leaping lead long range hook.
If you shield and then slip there is no problem.
efficient and offensive slipping: hip rotation, no neck movement or bending at the waist, economy of movement. Clearly demonstrated.
Finally someone who ACTUALLY knows what they're talking about on youtube.
haha. Cheers Cole
Fran Sands what age when you entered the sport of boxing? props to your trainer he really made you perfect the basics and fundamentals of the sport
Actually he doesn't. Frankly this os EXACTLY the opposite of what happens in a real fight... Slipping is reactionary. To be quick enough for your head to move away from an accelerating fist, the head has to move first; the feet only moves to catch your balance. If you try to slip by moving your feet first, the compression of all body parts from the ball of the foot all the way to the neck will delay the moving of your head, thus making you as slow as this guy. Another thing he says here is that you should avoid putting your weight on the front foot. Again, that is wrong and that is exactly the OPPOSITE of what you want. You can launch forward with more momentum after shifting your weight onto the front foot (watch Tyson). Also, when your body weight is on the front foot, your head is also more upfront, giving you a longer distance to pull back and evade any incoming head punch. Lastly, bending at the waist is frowned upon in boxing, but if done properly, is a great way to conserve energy at gain faster head movement (see Hagler and Nocolino). Don't listen to this asshat, he'll get you knocked the f out.
@@condefamilytv2387 hmmm who do I trust random youtube commenter or trainer?
@@bjbconde ive been sparring weekly for a while and moving only my head gets me off balance and I dont like it. I prefer to twist my back knee and move my head a little bit.
finally, someone explaining properly the footwork involved instead of saying "Just slip the [punch]"
finaly the style of coaching I desperately wanted.
Glad it fits :-)
I was sparring today with my best friend who’s been boxing for several years. I’ve never been to a boxing gym so he teaches me somewhat. His reach is longer by a few inches, same height as me, faster and better overall of course, but in a matter of a few videos I’ve learned a ton. Thank you.
2:02 OMG! my mind is blown! 8-0 that changed my whole feeling!
haha, excellent :-)
i watched over 10 videos from youtube about slipping a punch, i can tell this one is the best!
He makes all the techniques look super simple yet extremely sharp, I love it!
Sir you have saved me a fortune on coaching lessons and only thing I need now is more practice. I thank you greatly. 🥊
Cool, thanks Tew...glad they help
I'm a beginner and these videos are sooo immensely helpful, got my first charity fight going on on 16th of june, I aim to be the best possible boxer I can be before then. Luckily , I have a friend who is a commonwealth champion to spar with in a few weeks when he's done with his next fight. I'm so excited to learn more!
+Brutal Whale Yes, Commonwealth champs as friends can't hurt...sort of :-) Make time to do your footwork drills along the way.
I have been/ will continue to do so, even when walking around my house haha Keep making awesome videos sir, by far the best explanations of boxing technique I've found on youtube ^^
How did it go man?
Alfie 987 Meant to say July, haven't had it yet, finally got to spar another newbie again yesterday even though he had 15kg on me but it gave me confidence as I could actually land punches on him. I bet we both looked uncomposed and scrappy though :P
Brutal Whale
Keep practising and you'll win. Good luck
i really like your humble, "just the facts" approach to teaching boxing. Please keep going with all this great stuff.
The absolute best boxing coach. Things that have puzzled me forever and that I had received contradictory coaching on, now make COMPLETE SENSE. I highly recommend purchasing one of his courses. The Boxing Bundle course has literally hundreds of these explanations. I absolutely love the "Common Faults" that he covers in all of the Core Boxing Skills.
Fran is a highly gifted coach. He is able to break down the movements in an easy to understand way, without leaving out essential details. This is not a paid endorsement. I'm just a huge fan.
He was a boxer he can really coach others, and he had a good coach himself.
Thank you for including the detail about pro-active vs reactive movement. I've been trying to get an answer to the question of whether you should slip in response to a punch or as part of your rhythm and you're the first person that's been able to give me a proper answer.
+Patrick Denning No problem at all Patrick, really glad to help.
I'm literally training of your videos I'm preparing to join a boxing gym thanks
You joined gym?
Love your tutorials. Clear and spcific. So many coaches out there but not many can break it down like this and explain
Great Coach! Teaches real fundamentals and teaches it the right way!
Him and Jt van have great channels. Thanks Fran keep it up!
I also like the videos from ESNEWS with Brandon Krause
This gentleman has the best demonstrations and explanations of the sweat science of pugilism I have ever come across and I’ve seen many . Awesome!!!!
Fran your channel is easily in the top 5 fight channels on RUclips. Best instructional videos for boxing I've seen hands down! Keep up the brilliant content mate! Would love to train with you
Hi Fran,
Started boxing lessons late shortly before my 51th birthday which was 1,5 years ago. Found your channel randomly just a couple of weeks ago. From my opinion you’re doing a great job there, explaining straight and compact the essential basics of boxing. Learned a lot and improved my limited skills a lot. Keep on!
Alex
Very glad to hear that Alexander, thank you for taking the time to comment
Please dont Stop making videos you do serious Good clean and simple
learning video work for the boxworld. Exactly this is how it goes
Mr. Sands - It has been so long since I boxed (just a cpl amateur fights as a kid) and I was so young when my dad started teaching me that I forget even learning the basics or how to teach them. My grandson just turned 8yrs and my daughter has given me consent to get him started. Just the basics and if he likes it and excels I would turn him over to a real trainer. Point being your videos have been a blessing for us! Many thanks!
Very well explained. The use of ‘Whole-Part-Whole’ to explain the key principles in the video was very helpful. The ‘whole’ movement demonstrated followed by a breakdown into ‘parts’ and finished with a demonstration of the ‘whole’ movement. The explanation of common errors was also very helpful. A very high standard of teaching approaches used throughout this video.
Thanks Fran, can enjoy watching boxing matches more now having studied your videos.
You are a brilliant coach I ever saw, your videos sir are awesome keep them coming. Thanks a lot
Thank you fran for the coaching videos.i learned how to properly slip efficiently, throw one two punches properly ,left hook and left uppercut etc..your the best coach !. Thank you.

Thanks mate, that means a lot👍
Thanks a lot for putting these videos up and for the free pdf Fran!
No worries Horatio :-)
Really liking these videos. Lots of good info. Please keep it up.
+Cutler Dozier Cheers
I have some unlearning to do and relearn properly. Good instruction Mr sands
Great just great, thanks for this, I've always had problems with over extending at the hip, your explanation helped my slipping immediately.
You're welcome, thanks for the feedback
Fran the man I really appreciate your time an effort in making these video it really install confidences in a person who is trying to enter the sport of boxing especially trying to turn pro. keep it doing what your doing
Thank you very much indeed - I will do that.
very good. Seems like a very knowledgeable and experienced person
Great tutorial, Fran Sands !! Not to many teachers of the sweet science left.
I've just passed my level 1 ABAE assistant coaching badge and am helping out at our local ABC here in Jersey. Your tutorials are a great help to me when coaching our Juniors. They are so well explained and demonstrated, especially the 'Trigger, defend, attack' one. Thanks, really appreciate them!
Brilliant, welcome to the coaching community :-) Glad this material helps. Hope all goes well with your club, any help I can be let me know. Thanks
Cheers Fran, much appreciated mate. Keep up the excellent work!
Love it but I’d like to see examples of proactive slipping in sparring or pro fights as part of the video tbh... will do some searching
this is great sir its very easy to learn from you you deserve more subscribers
+alex flores Thanks :-)
As good as your other video on slipping punches was, this one is even better. Thanks for putting this on youtube!
+GeneralSirDouglasMcA Thank you :-)

+dimitris dimitri Thank you for your comment, really appreciated.
very useful mate thank you for making the video and don't stop teaching
Best video about slipping on youtube. Very clear
Amazing tips! Thanks from Brazil.
+Kaue Uematsu You are most welcome :-)
I've watched many videos on this topic, as a semi-pro fighter i find your techniques and videos best, energy efficient but yet very effective and fast moves. You have all my respect and subscribe, and yes i use your videos every day to master techniques and be better fighter.Cheers
+RaceSlave Thank you so much, that's a real motivation for me. Appreciate you taking the time.
This is THE best!
:-)
Very clear and technical explanation and demonstration of the technique. Best I've seen on RUclips.
Thank you Jules, that's very kind of you to say.
I meant it. As someone who's been in the business myself for over fifty years your teaching technique really is crystal clear. And I can think of no higher compliment for teaching than that.
Thanks again Jules. It really matters when colleagues from within the game offer positive views, made my night that mate. have a great weekend.
Very informative Channel. Great source of information, thank you!
Keep em coming coach! great work
+maleek da sneek Will do!!
Love this video coach, THANK YOU ! 👊
What an energy! What a grace!!What a great class!!!
Finally someone on RUclips I can actually learn the art of boxing from! Great detail and really well explained!
Thank you, that's very kind.
Thank you Fran for another excellent video teaching in a brief-time important things!. You are very precise and right to the point.
I always laugh cause I think you name Johnny from "expert boxing" doing certain moves that are truly dangerous, keep it up Fran cheers!
+Juancho Tatín Thank you, very kind. I don't name names :-), I just provide information
+Juancho Tatín I agree. He's stated that you should never move your head, you simply use your feet or pivot to dodge punches, and that your upper body should remain completely vertical 100% of the time. But the thing is, I've never watched a pro boxing match where the fighters didn't use head movement.
Scary thing is, most of these ridiculous "tips" come from leading channels!! I did comment on the hilarious "7 boxing footwork tips to avoid" explaining why I think there are so many successful frauds on youtube!!
I love this channel. This guy looks like an accountant that'll beat your ass.
your videos are really effective, really amazing
Thanks David
Another great video!!
Dude, so perfect, so clear, so useful!
Excellent, thank you for the comment
The way you put it is one of the best ways I ever heard it said how you slipped those punches simple efficient straight to the point not making it complicated and showing you exactly what the outcome is and doing it very simple like I said I rated a 98 that's what I rated at 98 almost perfect I'll be checking you out spending some money later
fantastic good instruction.
Ahhh.. so the head doesn't leave the cylinder of the width of the stance, optimal balance, minimal energy. That's the best explaination of the slip I've ever seen cheers Fran.
Awesome video, Nice moves!
Fran, my guy, its still not too late to go Pro now , you still have what it takes
Nice video! Thanks. What drills would you recommend to make sure one maintains the proper form while under the pressure of intense sparring? I tend to slip punches well during a drill; however, I get sloppy with the fatigue or the intensity of sparring.
Scouse boxing wizard, cheers Fran this content is unreal!
Haha, thanks very much lar
so clear and to the point
Thank you very much. Keep the awesome work.
+Yousef Alrzny You're welcome, thank you
Absolutely amazing stuff
Great lesson.!
thanks fran,
i will work on this tomorrow. i think it will help me. i know what u mean about not being fast enough to slip a punch, i am not. by the time i see it i do welll to block. i will work on this slipping technique intigrating it with my offense
+alan spurlock Excellent, thanks Alan
THESE VIDEOS ARE 100% SOLID GOLD 👍
Great video my good man
Cheers ;-)
Thanks Coach Sands!
Dear Mr.Frans i allways to a side step after i slip in sparring its kind of my counter routine ...
exsspecially on the outside slip with a "huge" step from my right leg to preform a southpaw jab and follow up with something whats possible at that moment and after that i go back in my normal stance ... do u have some videos about slipping and sidesteps for counter moves or maybe u would create some ^^ ? grettings from germany !
I really enjoyed this video thank you
I don't box, I do karate but with my short reach this kind of technique is pretty much necessity for me. Thanks.
best boxing trainer On the internet by far I learned everything from watchin these videos
+johndemon max Thank you, very flattered.
Thanks coach👍👍 💯
Nice video coach....thumbs up
Cheers, thank you for the comment and thumbs up :-)
great motion, movement and style, suited best for the Queensbury rules British style fighter, id like to see someone from the style of Mayweather phil shelley style boxer or the Tyson peek-a-boo style fighter, use this motion, i can see it takes your head off center on return and definitely works well but is limited by style, fighters like Roy jones with square shoulders, right hand is parallel with left, he slips from hips and rolls from knees, would be good to see if anyone using these styles could put this into practice.. i remember seeing nigel benn throwing a long straight right hand from his toes right through,,
one of my favorite videos!
Glad you like it :-)
Great video keep it up.
Great video
this is absolutely brilliant
Thanks Ian, glad you like it.
Very informative video. I have a question though, Why is it that in many pro boxing matches and mma fights, I see fighters slipping by bending at the waist and hips? is there a place for that, or is it just lack of discipline?
Very true what you said about not commit to much to the slip cause you lose your balance and you spend a lot energy.
+skotiskiller Glad that it makes sense, thanks for the comment
Fran Sands Thanks for the video coach.
"None of that because it will get you knocked out" ah, well thanks for describing me to a tee Fran! But also very grateful for this excellent and useful vid.
+warwick clark :-)
To make clear i only need to rotate my rigth foot when slipping inside and no foot rotation needed when slipping outside am i right?
Great couch
Your this was very helpful! keep up the good work!
Thanks, will do
Great teacher.
Everything he says is scientifically accurate.
Thank you
Thanks! I was leaning like a 🌲 in the wind. Wasting all that energy. I will work on my slip for sure.
Good coaching. Been getting tagged too much in sparring lately.
Thanks pal 👍
Excelent, sir! Your content is of great value :-)
+Mauricio Fretes Thank you
Amazing thanks you my man
All good. Just remember not to set a pattern of slipping. Especially to the inside.
Great lesson! I was trying to find a video on how to slip the jab (orthodox vs orthodox) to the ouside (left of my oponent) while going into an angle (again, left) so I can counter with my jab or even with a over the top or straight right... I've seen southpaws do it (lomachenko) but i'm finding it hard to find a orthodox example... any sugestion? Cheers!
+supermushishi Check out my video on the angled side step...that might help.
Hi, coach terrific video one question though, do i have to pivot on the balls of my feet when i slip, the same way i do when throw punches?
Can you slip inside a right cross? And what counters would you use if you did slip inside a right cross?
