    It is possible to punch slightly downwards in a semi-crouched position without having to be off balance though, you would have to be leaning forward a lot to be off balance if you are angling the punch slightly downwards. It is actually a heavy shot if done well covered.

    Whenever I take a good punch or kick to the liver, my interest in sparring seems to disappear and I wish I was doing a different sport, like croquet or lawn bowling....……..

Thank you 🙏 so much for these incredible videos. Is there any possibility that we get opportunity to take some personal training session with you?

    Fran - my approach for body hooks would be to try and land right on the very bottom edge of the rib cage ( the rib line ). If you don’t really “hug” the rib line, there is danger of going too low and glancing off the hip. If you hit on that rib line, you will also be impacting the soft tissue, due to the size of the fist or glove. Could you please comment? Thanks!

    • @das_hund-1
      @das_hund-1 7 лет назад

      Then you probably have long arms as well, right? So for defense - as Fran suggests you could use straight body punches - you have a lot more options anyway!

    • @dfpguitar
      @dfpguitar 6 лет назад

      realise your comment was a year ago. But the longer your legs are the wider your stance has to be when squatting down. Shuffling your feet from shoulder width to something 2ft wider will also drop your height significantly.

    How low do you have to duck in order to connect uppercuts and hooks to the body? As low as a cross to the body?

  • @wstage

    Good stuff, I'm fairly tall and lanky which makes body punches a risky situation (unless I'm the shorter opponent). What do you think Fran? Use fewer body shots as a taller fighter? Instinct tells me it's a golden opportunity for an incoming bombs as the shorter man might see an opening?

    • @myboxingcoach
      @myboxingcoach  8 лет назад +1

      You could try with the jab William and see what reaction you get. Generally as long as you use speed there's no particular reason why not.

    • @richardlyons8422
      @richardlyons8422 8 лет назад

      You should watch some Gerald McCleanan. He was tall and a great body puncher. Teddy Atlas wreckoned taller fighter punched very hard because of the leverage of their long limbs.

    Now can you make a video of how to get outta there when you plant on that straight right to the body because you look vulnerable in that split second

    • @myboxingcoach
      @myboxingcoach  8 лет назад +1

      Well spotted Marc. Risk increases and decreases with every second and every passage of boxing. The key is whether the risk is worth it to land that body shot on the way in. You can always double arm block (cover) and simply come upright to be at close range. Nice observation mate, appreciate that.

    • @bernardblackhurst7792
      @bernardblackhurst7792 8 лет назад

      That sounds good Fran. What about this as an alternative though? As you land the backhand to the body your weight goes onto your front foot so you can easily push off the front foot and spring backwards with both feet to an out of range position?

  • @oldhick6534
    @oldhick6534 8 лет назад +1

    body shots are extremely effective on the SouthPaw. in the Southpaw stance the liver is in front.

    • @myboxingcoach
      @myboxingcoach  8 лет назад

      Very good point

    • @vernshein5430
      @vernshein5430 5 лет назад

      Plus if you are conventional as you slip to deliver the hook you are slipping to his outside where it is safer IMHO. As a kicker I like to roundhouse kick to the southpaws spleen with my right leg shin. That certainly seems to slow them down. I also find either liver or spleen shot seems to hurt more if they are landed at a slight upward angle to the body.
