I’m all about the experience of bringing a dead automatic back to life. I enjoy those couple minutes of winding and setting. However, I do not have any grand complications.
I just wish these things weren't so expensive considering how simplistic they really are.

Build your own, thats what I did. All you need is some wood, a 3D printer and some electronics, and ideally some basic coding knowledge.

I just ordered a pair of these. I think the looks really good, and I also, am tired of my watches winding down, then having to wind them back up, set them, etc. Especially when I want to wear one and I have to set everything before taking off for the day. Many times I just set the time and forget the date. These will replace my cheapy winders that died out a couple of years ago.

I've got 4 of these and I plane to get more :) I've had no issues so far..I was under the impression they could only be stacked 3 high (so 6 in total, on a dual base) I need to get a bigger base by the time I've finished collecting the colours lol
Should I buy a watch wonder for my Seiko and orient auto manic because I got about 8 of them in my collection .
If your time piece is running plus or minus 5 seconds a day. When do you line them back up to actual time? At the 30 second difference? What is you opinion?

One of my oldest is an auto... 17 years old and still strong seiko. The other older is a casio atomic/solar 12+ years old and the battery shows max recharged. A citizen eco titanium that is over 15 years old still goin strong. And a rare Kometa russian auto(real beauty) old still 13+ still going and on and on...
Those look really cool, but I just toss my watches in my clothes dryer when I'm not wearing them. Not to worry, I use the air fluff setting. They're always wound up and ready to go! At least I think they are. They're virtually illegible now.

Does frequently winding your watch manually slowly damage it? I'm asking because I have a Rolex Perpetual Datejust that I very seldom use, so once in a while (maybe twice a month) I wind it up. Thing is though, recently when I was winding it I sensed something break and then turning the crown didn't wind the watch anymore. When I sent it in for service, the service man said the lubrication has gunked up. I've had the watch for almost 7 years when this happened. Maybe I should buy a watch winder? Also, I read a comment here that said they don't want the engine to keep running all the time but then again wearing the watch everyday means the movement keeps running, right? So is that bad? Should one refrain from wearing an automatic everyday so the movement will stop once in a while?
You can definitely wear your automatic every day, the movement is designed to take that wear.
You should indeed not handwind your watch too often, but as long as you don't do it multiple times every week it'll be fine. So a couple times a month is perfectly fine, or even recommendable (as it helps the gears stay smooth running).
Do remember to get your watch serviced often enough.

Some watch winders can supposedly damage a watch. Some are specifically geard for a certain movement or watch brand? Are these safe to use?

These Boxy/Diplomat Winders are absolute crap. I stated with six modules and I am down 3 that still work and I expect the rest to die anytime now. I have sent the 3 for repairs in California. After being repaired they worked for a short while and died again. I would strongly recommend against purchasing these pieces of garbage.
@Tom Smith Absolutely, I had two of these winders, one failed within 6 months and was repaired FOC. I failed again after three months, it's mate died after 9 months both went into the trash Geoff

Do you mean a manual watch? Those exist. You wind it with the crown.
Lol, I just give my autos a quick "Seiko shuffle" where I just rattle it for about five to ten seconds, then set it. Is'nt setting a watch one of life's little pleasures? I enjoy manual winding too, especially if the winder feels nice and smooth! When I was a kid, my first watch was a Timex Easyreader with manual only winding with a red seconds hand!
Great video, Jory! I'd love some of these watch winders but here in the UK they are hellishly expensive considering what they are and that they are a mass produced item!! I guess I'll have to source from outside the UK to avoid the greedy middle man!

It is not a matter of frequency but a matter of how many turns it takes a day. (maybe that was what you meant). 650 to 900 tunrs are usely perfect, and ony clockwise for most chonograph models. Typical with ETA 7750 movement.
I just pay someone to come to my house once a day and move them around to wind them up. They've been doing it for me for the last 10 years.

I know I’m late. Cameron Weiss that makes Weiss watches has a good segment about this topic. He said that you’re more likely to hurt the movement by winding an automatic from a dead stop instead of leaving it on the winder. I think the only thing that’s paramount is keeping it lubricated because modern oil is only good for about 10 years. Who knows what to believe about winders as far as I’ve looked into this it seems like preference. Love the channel keep up the good work!
maybe this is why a lot of newer autos are made without the date window--most movements probably still have the date feature going on inside, but not showing on the dial. makes it much easier to set without the date and generally looks better....

Agree. I use one to just keep a watch that I’m rotating that week going. But no more than a week and it then goes into the watch box to rest until I wear it again.
I was told using a auto winder wears out your watch and you need service more frequent. especially if you only wear the watch 3 times a year.
If power management is a problem, you need a watchwinder winder that winds 2 of your watchinders at once. Once the watchwinder is wound, you can work it so it winds your watches. Another good suggestion is to use your cat as a watchinder. Mine can do 6 at once. Of course, multiple cats can mange even the largest watch collection.
That said, it's surely just a matter of time until the watchwinder snobs are ruining watchinder collecting for the rest of us.
It would have been cool to see you load the watches into them.

Good video but maybe I'm been an idiot but won't your autos wear more and need a service quicker? I had a cheap double Chinese ww lasted 5 years then died. Bought a 'quality' Wolf ww (no settings) and it's great for some the Oris and the Omega but fails to wind the Seikos. Giving it to my wife when it's her Birthday so it will wind her gift as I know she will stop wearing it if she has to manually wind it. Should of bought a Quartz really but just couldn't do it 🤔
I have the JQUEEN that winds 6 and stores 7 more. Works very well and they have multiple options. Those are cool though. Modular design is a cool idea.
The JQUEEN winders are a steal, that 6 winder is usually about $170 on Amazon. About the same price as a single Boxy and a cheap watch box.
Sold all my watches. Only keeping my 007j and another seiko quartz I got. Thinking about getting one of these to keep it wound. Anybody think it's a good investment or no?

Francois Letits indeed. I have 7 pieces. I rotate some and other’s do sit in my Watchbox. My watchmaker who handles Christie’s and Sotheby’s auctions told me to wind them once a month and I’m good to go.
He advised to leave the winders for Patek annual calendar’s and whatnot. And trust me this guy know’s his shit.
Just thinking about having to take off the watches and put in the winders gives me a headache...
Now I understand why some people prefer quartz...

I find it really depends on the watches movment.
My Hamilton Khaki auto (no day/date complication) I dont care. It takes under 30 seconds for me to pull the crown, give it 5 winds and set the time. Crown in and strap on. Done.
My frederiqe Constant with its day date & moonphase is a pain in the ass to set. Takes me well over 20 minutes every time I let it die, so to speak.

You mean handwound? Because Automatics are mechanical watches where the movement is powered by a rotor, moved by your wrist.

Just put a couple watches on both wrists and do the cabbage patch dance (clockwise or counter counterclockwise).
I'd be a little cautious about stacking those winders too high. Maybe 2 levels up, max.
I have a winder for my automatic-only watches since I have a large watch rotation. Honestly, it is a bit of a hassle, and I don't intend to buy auto-only watches anymore. Plus, I'd take hand wind on any watch if it means taking 2mm off the thickness off of an auto.

Do you let your car idle in the driveway all night? I know watches are made to run all the time, but they will last 50-60% longer if you do not use winders, providing you have more than one watch.
I will say that mechanical things like to keep running, it also depends on the lubricants used.
Combustion engines produce heat. Heat breaks down oil which leads to wear. Properly maintained watches last just as long as watches sitting in a drawer.

The plate used in this video can power up to 6 boxes with only one cable, not 12 as communicated here in the video. (without said plate you can stack uo to three boxes with one cable). Also while they are good looking design-wise and have the adaptable turnning frequency, they are rather cheaply made (plastic all the way), a wee bit noisy and tend to break down after a while. So in essence a mixed bag. Would really like to learn about some alternatives, anyone?

Good video, mr. Goodman. I do believe however, many enthusiasts prefer to wind their timepieces because they enjoy it so much. Myself included, there is no beter feeling in the morning than winding your automatic or manual timepiece. But we are all different. Winders are not a bad idea, just a different way of solving an issue.
People really enjoy spinning their watches in a circle? Because I find it a nightmare, especially since that's rarely enough to keep it ticking for a whole day.

A watch is not a car, you can have it running 24/7 for years and service it when the timing gets worse. Overwinding can be an issue I believe. And if the watch dies just make sure to wind it one a week or month so the oils don't degrade.

I have two Mozsly devices to manage the power reserve of 5 quality automatic watches. I tend to rotate the watches according to when they were last worn and by their power reserve. I switch on the winders for around 8-10 hrs a day only when I think necessary (not always the same watch naturally) and they keep all pieces ticking along very nicely. Super quiet, not silly money and very reliable, they can run off the mains, be linked together, or run on two AA batteries if you don't want the hassle of cables and I've found the latter easily last for over two months when operating them on the standard bi-directional 650TPD setting. They cannot overwind a decent watch - if that was the case and you wear an auto watch daily, it would break in no time. If you are going away for a long time and are not taking all your collection (who does lol), just let the watches wind down, stop and rest. it will do them no harm at all.

I like watch winders because:
1. It saves the crown winding gears. Automatic ETA movements are designed to be wound mostly by the rotor. Using the crown too often will wear it prematurely.
2. Watches tend to run faster when they're not fully wound. Keeping my automatics fully wound makes them more precise.
3. When I plan to wear a particular watch tomorrow, I put it on the winder tonight. In the morning I wake up to a fully wound watch.
SteelHex and what about hand wind
I cannot see using a watch winder for a Kinetic watch when I want to use my other watch (an automatic). Its crazy, but I would have to use electricity (house or battery) for the Watch Winder to wind the watch for the watch to produce its own electricity to power the watch. I do get the idea why someone would want to use a watch winder....but not for a Kinetic...just pull the crown on Hack mode.

I don't mind engaging with my watches. The only one that I have in a winder is a 'moonphase'.

No, but I would turn the engine on intermittently to make sure the batteries and fluids were all properly charged/circulated... that’s literally car ownership 101... also, cars have a much longer “power-reserve” than a watch- but still it’s recommended to turn your cars engine on about once a week.
Jason Huynh you definitely don’t want to let a car sit for an extended period, you’d want to start it and drive it around the block a couple times once a week. [if that’s too much of a hassle- why own the car??] BUT, a better analogy is to think of the winder as a robot that drives your car 24/7. The more you drive it, the closer you are to needing maintenance. Do you want the robot to put 100k miles on the car before you get to drive it? In order to prevent damage to the watch, it should be wound about half way ONCE PER MONTH. No need to set the time, just wind it about 20 times. That takes about 5 seconds or so. Personally, I think it’s fun to interact with watches, as others have said.
Not saying there’s no legitimate use for a winder. Valid reasons (in my opinion) would be 1) for a perpetual calendar, which is more involved to set, or 2) for someone who wears 2 watches a day. For example- 1 to work, and one after work. Every day. In that case a SINGLE winder would be acceptable, not sure why you’d want ALL of your watches running ALL the time. Even then, depending on the power reserve it might not be an issue. If you have a watch with a 72 hour power reserve once it’s fully wound you could easily wear it from 9-5 take it off, wear your other watch (let’s say- with a 48 hour power reserve) from 6pm until 8 the next morning. Both watches will always be wound. You could wear the 2 watches for decades without ever manually winding them.
Not sure why you’d want to. If you wear the watch less than once a month and can’t be bothered to take 30 seconds to set it a couple of times a year, I’d sincerely question why you’re into mechanical watches to begin with. (No offense to anyone, just my personal opinion).
I got a sweet carbon case dual winder with touch screen display (lots of adjustment and can adjust profile for each bay)...very quiet. NIB from eBay for 80 bucks! Truthfully unless you have a very nice high complication watch (perpetual calender or other calendar) using a winder is over kill. A 3 hand/date sports watch can be set so quickly keeping it on a winder just shortens the mechanical life.
why is this a thing? when your watch is dead, just shake it a little then set the time. Easy. Youll need to correct the time anyways regardless if it was kept running or not. And wouldnt it just cause unnecessary wear on the parts its internals?
