  • This video shows how I made a low profile hitch bike rack out of steel tubing. My goal was to design a single bike rack that wouldn't stick out too far, therefore, allowing me to keep it on my truck. Also, I wanted it to be strong enough to deter thieves from entering via my tailgate. This was a simple welding project that would be good for a beginner. The V.A. got us a wheelchair hanger on the Buick. I think we hauled the chair in it once and then I took it off nd keep it in the shed, ready to go back on when and if the chair needs hauling again. Good rig you made! 2 wheels are a long time gone here, powered or non-powered. Feet are a gracious plenty and even they get interesting at times. Good video Phil. Jesus weekend to you and GBWYall!

I don't have too many years of peddling left. Bad knees are getting worse with age. Weather's turning nice here. mid 70's today. Have a happy Lord's Day!

@@PhilCrockett I wore mine out years ago and don't care one whit about somebody slicing around and hammering in new ones. I can mow the grass and whatnot and get around and that's all I want. Olympics were never in my sights. Really pretty today. Snow squalls all day yesterday but too warm to stick. And the Almighty is good, ALL the time!

I actually made one for 4 bikes. instead of using utilitly hooks, I simply used square tubing. super strong.

@@PhilCrockett N. Michigan. Pretty much gone now. Few patches in the woods. Near 70 just a day or so ago and it snowed again today with no accumulation. Slow spring. Going to give a go at a rack but tailored to the front hitch on my truck. Bought a used truck and have been surprised how handy a receiver is on the front.

Im doing this for a welding project at my school, do you think it would work to extend it out by another 7 inches and add another 15 inch piece to stack the design to fit more than one bike?

Phil, I am disabled with surgeries of my spinal disk L2-L4., also a spinal fusion procedure using a piece my hipbone for disk replacement. And have a stomach mesh implant after a colonoscopy..
    I own a Chevy Silverado,
    the exact same year model
and color as your truck Amazing!
There's no way that I could build such a bike rack like that much less even riding a bike at camp. However I'd rather make use of this as a jerry gas can bracket or as a Xtra spare tire mount. If you could make another with the same specs I'd happily reimburse you with whatever amount you need.
    Thanks, 10CC 🤠

Sorry, I'm not in that business. I barely have the time to keep up with my YT channel. try calling a local welder, or welding shop.

Looks good! Seeing you have a welder, why not make those "U" hooks. My preference would be 5/8" rod welded to a bolt.......then it could be bolted to that crossmember. Heater hose would slip right on and be renewable. Going to make one, thanks.
Off to look at the rest of your projects.

@@PhilCrockett Upon further thinking, I'd hinge that upright so it could lean over and make bike loading easier. Just a thought for us old guys that have trouble lifting.

If you came straight out of the hitch far enough to begin with you, could go straight up to a tee shape and be done with it.
Less cutting and welding. Nice rack.

I felt like it was less likely to rub the paint off my bike if it was a true 'over hang'. Plus.... it was ez. Just one extra cut for a better design. However, it's welding, so you can do whatever you want. Gotta love welding! Thanks for watching and commenting! I'm hoping to buy a new welder this month or the next. thinking about the Lincoln MP 210.......
