  • Many have written off Sanskrit, an ancient Indian language, whereas others portray it as the panacea for everything. In this talk, Dr Sampadanada Mishra, a Sanskrit Scholar answers the question whether Sanskrit language is still relevant. His research based arguments compels one to re look at Sanskrit in a completely new light. From launching the 24-hour Sanskrit Radio Divyavani, to founding the Samskrita Bala-Sahitya Parishad to propagate children’s literature in Sanskrit, Dr Sampadananda Mishra lives and breathes Sanskrit. As Director of Sri Aurobindo Foundation for Indian Culture, his project Sanskrit and Speech Pathology aims to create a remedial training programme based on Sanskrit sounds to help people with speech-related disorders. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at www.ted.com/tedx

With due respect the correct expression is Vasaudhaiva Kutumbakam. Not Vasudeva. Vasudha in Sanskrit means the earth and Vasudha+aiva =vasudhaiva, it is a sandhi, a grammatical form of combining two wards meaning the earth = vasudha and aiva= itself meaning therefore is "the earth itself is my family".

The word EARTH is the literal translation of VASUDHA but can be taken to mean the world, in the present context.

Also makes me wonder how can a nation be so blind to completely sideline such a treasure of our civilization and put it in the league of optional third languages in schools. We need more people like you to revive Sanskrit to it’s full glory and hopefully one day we won’t be debating whether India has a national language or not.

After watching this video, I wanted to hoot Sanskrit closer, try to learn it,because as it turned out it is not so difficult. The English language we are currently studying has some similarities to Sanskrit. Another interesting thing is that each word has up to 2000 meanings (for example, the word Water). It was also very interesting to hear that Sanskrit words consist of syllables. I believe that we need to continue to study ancient languages, because they are the ancestors of our modern languages.

Most words in Indic languages come from Sanskrit, so at least 80% of it is understandable; only the grammatical suffixes/prefixes and conjugation would have to be understood. And you're saying it as if everyone in India understands English, for example, but it's only like 5% (at best) that understand it fully. And even fewer can speak it properly (probably like 1%). Most people who claim to "speak/understand English" merely understand a few words here and there; their grammar has _lot_ of room for improvement. The Sanskrit situation would be no different, except the comprehension would be much higher because they wouldn't have to learn an entirely new vocabulary while learning a new grammar.

There is an actual authentic Kannada word which fell out of usage over the years in assumed upper class society. If you interact with real people of the land you will know that.
Also to remember Kannada is one of the few languages to have its own script for thousands of years. Sanskrit and Sanskrit derived languages do not have that.

We need teachers who make the learning environment fun filled, enjoyable and quite interactive (without any competition)! Speed of learning should be de-emphasized at all levels. Children should love to come to class, as much as they love to go to the play ground! The class room ought to be diverse at all times. Stories and plenty of examples need to be used. The teachers must be creative themselves and they ought to meet as a group every quarter, if not on a weekly basis and exchange ideas to make the whole experience very rewarding.

The purpose of language is for harmony among people. If you personally feel passion for your mother or father tongue it's personal. But if you seek to impose it on others whose tongue is different it becomes hurtful. The language from birth resonates our feelings to our close relations much better than the English that we learned from school. But to discourage English just because of identity problems is impractical because it's a universal language. The little harmony that we have in our modern Indian society will surely affect the country's development in the science and arts. Which will affect our productive industry and regional communication.

The rishis of Ancient India discovered that every thought originates in sound and that the sound produces a geometric construct that manifests itself into a form of light. Unlike every other language, the sounds of the Sanskrit language are not arbitrary. The Sanskrit language was never created, but was instead discovered. Sanskrit is eternal.

most sophisticated language of all from our ancestors yet we hardly know anything about it as we all want to be "modern". i regret not seeing the beauty and knowledge and wisdom and creativity etc etc from our ancestors before.

Wonderful, Wonderful, Wonderful. Please never never compare Samskritam with any other language. Once one learns it he/she will have only praise. That's all
