- Is this another Non-car guy dunkfest? Absolutely. Am I ashamed about it? Not at all. So get ready to see some ultimate disrespect as we clown on fools for not knowing many Car Inventions aren't even be used anymore, but for some reason, finds it's way into the vocabulary...of Non-Car people of all things. From Carburetors, Brake Cables, calling Chrome Vinyl Wraps, "Chrome Paint" and so much more! (Not really, Only like 2 more, since I just listed 3 of the 5 entries. End my suffering, I still hate making list videos, in fact, I think I'm starting to hate cars too).
Dear Twitch Streamers who play GTAV, Need for Speed, and other Arcade Racing Games...stop being so big dumb dumb and actually look up a thing or two before broadcasting your stupidity to the world. Actually, who am I kidding, their job IS to broadcast their stupidity to the world, car or otherwise. Please stop using the word Carburetor to sound smarter than you really are, it does the opposite effect, you sound really dumb instead. Carburetors haven't been used in decades. They also aren't a synonym for Engine.

Those aren't hubcaps, those are wheel covers. Hubcaps are the small shiny circles covering the lug nuts (on the hub) on the wheels of cars in the '50s.
Also, steel is also an alloy, so "alloy wheels" is even _less_ impressive than that!

The carburetor thing was funny to me.
Me and my dad have this joke that’s been going on for years that basically anytime something isn’t working (like a problem with a car, truck, go kart, lawn mower, tractor, etc) we are always like “oh maybe the carburetor needs rebuilt or clean or replaced” or something like that.
What’s funny though is that I have had a ‘78 CJ5 jeep for a long time and until I actually swapped the carb. for efi, I constantly had issues with that stupid little box.
Heh, my dad does something similar to me. He's always like: "It seems to be using a lot of oil, maybe you got a blown piston ring?" or " It sounds like it's not running on all cylinders" or "You're getting terrible mileage, it's probably a burnt valve"

I have and drive often, an 84 dodge pickup, it does have a carb on it, which i had to replace because the charcoal canister started pushing charcoal into the carb, once i replaced it, i had no more issues, except for the choke mechanism - whatever coil they used to make it self-adjusting wore out.
Other than that, the only times it has left me stranded was when it was late at night and i was too tired to think about the issue and could have fixed it right then and there had i known the problem.

Being a classics guy, I was a bit worried seeing carbs and ‘irrelevant’ together. Knowing you though I wasn’t too worried, knew your arguments would go the way they did. Matter of fact, working in parts retail for these cars, there are actually conversion kits for some of the first PI cars, either to a modern injection system or back to good old carbs as the systems used in the 70s do have their flaws obviously. I love the simplicity and the logic behind the way things were done to get cars moving 50 years ago
Carbs are so genius that injection feels a bit like cheating. Just like not having to optimize the shit out of softwares because computing power is readily available

Minis EFI models are great, but they only started building them in the early 90s so of course they were far more advanced by then.

Steel is strong. The original point of non-ferrous alloy wheels was the make a wheel that was about as strong as steelies, but lighter in weight. That's the rub-- they _try_ to be as strong as steel, which is why the metals are alloyed. Steel is the top-tier in terms of strength, but is heavy. Alloy wheels try to be just as strong while adding lightness to the equation.

i work in a tire shop, one time this lady wanted a new tire and brought in her car on a donut. We pulled the car into the shop and looked around for the wheel to mount the new tire on but we couldnt find it so we had to call her. She came to the shop, opened her truck, pulled out a hubcap and said, "is this not it?"

To be fair, being able to tune a carburetor is actually quite impressive. I have a carbureted car and I usually need help tuning it. But yeah, those things are antiques lol.

@@ayumikuro3768 as far as the automotive industry 1985 is pretty antique the field moves very fast compare the cars now to 1985 almost nothing is the same other than the ICE maybe even than there are differences. Not saying that the 80s cars are worse or anything but saying they aren’t getting to collector or antique status is a bit of a stretch

I like how there are still a fair amount of people that replace the fuel injection systems for carburators on older cars here in europe. With multiple carburators you can make lots of hp with a n/a engine, it sounds awesome, its super agressive on the throttle also looks super dope, buy it drains the fuel tank as fast like when you flush the toilet

I Don't know what kind of system is used to get the diesel or crude oil into a hot bulb engine...
Maybe this engine variation that has the ability to run on diesel uses a Carburattor... Maybe Not.
Either way they aren't considered diesel engines, the use of diesel fuel alone is Not enough to be considered a diesel engine.
Hot bulb engines are a category by themselfs.

I learned that hot bulb engines that where build before direct injection was first tried on them also functioned via indirect injection.
Or place like brazil, were most of the popular cars were carbureted till like 12 years ago, so most of car guys here nowadays still get amused by fuel injection somehow ajahhshshshsh
@@antjeeismann4684 Hot bulb engines are not diesel engines because they don't use compression to ignite the fuel, a hot bulb engine will squirt fuel into the super hot bulb at the piston down stroke where the heat will sizzle and vapourise the fuel, but it won't burn yet due to the lack of oxygen.
It is ignited after the piston pushes up a new charge of fresh air into the hot bulb, basically the same way nitro engines (used in rc planes and cars ect.) are ignited using a hot wire..
There are actual carburettored compression ignition engines, typically found in model "diesel" engines used in the 60s for model airplanes, they have a little tap on top that allows you to control the compression ratio as a way of tuning them to autoignite at TDC.
We should retire all engine sayings and just say “Time to get the driveline spinning!” 😆

Carburetors are just better than fuel injection because of the sound. You hear the engine itself, not just the exhaust. That’s why any classic Hemi sound is ten times cooler than any modern Hemi sound. The former ones roar like monsters, the latter just make loud raspy farts.
The only part i like about carbureted engines actually... The sound of it is fucking awesome, you cam feel the power of the fucking explosions inside the damn thing when you rev it up.
You know... Regarding of what people say about steelies... There's a set of wheels from a Peugeot 106 Rallye that has steelies (which are actually made with magnesium and made by Michelin)

I feel really singled out here with my cable operated carbureted cars that have paint and antennae. LOL
BTW cable brakes work just as fast as hydro. The difference is syncing the cables. Cables stretch which isn't a problem on a bicycle (or motorcycle), where the rear brakes a separate from the front. BUT car's have to mix front and rear brakes all at the same time. As the cables stretch one brake side can work harder than the other.
before someone gets confused, yeah carbs are still used, but only in performance-driven motocross race bikes (if they have 2 stroke engine), the most efficient lightest solution for them, and it actually works well on those engines (personal experience for years, not internet knowledge of googling and being a smart ass). Don't know any other thing that would still use them because of their man issue, they age pretty badly. Also, bikes got hands of carbs a bit later thanks to a smaller impact on efficiency so last carburated bikes were on market about 2005 (anything not intended for racing and high power that still has carbs is some piece of chinese ****).
I agree. I think for very specific applications where the engine is always going to be at a specific range of rpm, a carb is just as good if not superior. Race applications is a good example since most good drivers will keep the engine spinning within a narrow band of rpm. And a well tuned set of webers sound glorious
actually honda,suzuki and yamaha still make carbeurator bikes in Pakistan . The reason for this is because they are much cheaper than fuel injection and in small bikes (all below 150cc) it doesn't effect the fuel average too much . although i will say that the hondas (cd70 and cg125) are based on very old designs (from the 80s).
though the suzuki gs150 has still been in production since 2005 with no changes so i guess you point that most bike after 2005 are fuel injected still kinda stands
the yamaha ybr 125 started selling here in around 2013 i think but i dont know when it was designed (probably much earlier cause the pakistani bike market isnt big enough to justify designing a bike specifically to be sold here they might have just took an efi bike and sold it with carbed engine
oh and all these bike are basic commuter bikes so no frills and no electronics beyond the lights and ignition system (for spark plugs)
the honda cd70 (with a 0.07 litre or 70cc engine) costs less than 500 us dollar
honda cg 125 (125cc) costs at most 750 dollars probably
if you want electric start and 5 gears instead of four then theres the cg125 special edition for 900ish usd
and if you want a front disc brake along with five gear and electric start (rear is still drum) then you can get the yamaha ybr 125 or the suzuki gs150 for 950-1200 usd depending on which version of which bike you get
a lot of people prefer the basic cg125 over the yamaha 125 and suzuki 150 cause of the "rumble" sound it has and its quicker acceleration due it being 15-20 kilograms lighter than its rivals also it is a over head valve engine (i think its also refered to as a pushrod engine , not sure on that tho) compared to more modern overhead cam engines in the ybr and gs
also i think the honda navi is sold in the us and is carbeurated but it seems to be more of a reskined scooter than a bike
You're a bit off on your statement. Carbs didn't cease in 05, but street legal 2t vehicles were banned by the epa in 05, one of the last 2t bikes built was the Kinetic TFR- a Vespa Ciao clone. Carbs are still a thing with motorbikes. Sometimes in weird choices made, like the Honda Rukus and Metropolitan use the same engine, but the latter is efi, I believe.
Carbs are and still are a standard component on any motorcycle in Southeast Asia. Fuel injection just started out when the Honda Beat AT outsells the others. Yamaha with their old Mio was refreshed to have a standard efi. The suzuki raider 150 also has an efi as an option. For the Philippines, all motorcycles that have efi are at 80k php and up price range. Lower than that are their carb versions. And the mechanics are getting edgy on efi. Sometimes, not even accepting a job order when efi are being worked on. But the large amount of carbureted motorcycles still running and selling brand new keeps them busy.

If I'll be real here. Wheels are just something I really don't care for. Sure they look nice and all, but thats when sitting still. Whenever I finally get a car, I won't really change the wheels. Tires will be changed for safety reasons, but I will most likely keep using the wheels the car comes with unless they break
Agreed. I would never spend 5K on a set of “real” wheels. Especially if you’re just daily driving it. Just get a set of wheels that look nice and won’t break on you within a year or two.
The real reason people should get new wheels is for racing. It lowers the unsprung weight of the car equaling better power to weight ratio (as well as being able to fit different tire sizes best for your sport) so if you're not racing then you're right, no particular point except for aesthetic
@@altairadelais3673 Lighter wheelset can help in increasing fuel.mileage, too. It doesn't just hafta be performance. Other than that, sure, aesthetic, since most factory wheels are ugly, and if it's not a five spoke, I don't want it on my car.

To go a little further, the reason forging makes wheels (and parts in general) stronger, is because when you just cast parts, really small air bubbles form. Forging them and pressing the metal down into itself over and over pushes out that air. It’s also why forged parts are heavier, they’re much more dense!

I like the simplicity of carburetors. My dad hated having a carburetor but he complains more about his fast EFI system. I like my land yachts so what's a land yacht without a fuel dumper.
The fuel injectors just use electronic tuning over manually adjusting the 3 main parts of a carb. It just depends on if you like mechanical systems over electronic systems. There are good things about each.
I always seem to struggle with car terms. But you deliver it in a way that makes sense along with proper visuals. Anyways, didnt i see that carburetors are actually making a return somewhat? Not like the original type of carbs were used to, but more like a refined model of what they are...

Your XXR comment hits personally. I remember when I was in highschool and almost dumped money on them, then found out someone was selling 18x9 superleggera's for $500 for my 2nd gen tiburon (we all make mistakes), with old half worn Kumhos on them in 2007. A friend of mine split his rim XXR BBS clone open on a pothole and the rim barrel tore into the tire, I had a 1/4" bend on the same road with my supers.
I sold them to my bud since 6th grade in 2016 for his WRX, which due to being a dumb teenager already seen a bunch of wear and tear, so they became his winter rims. The rex is gone but the wheels are in his attic, we are trying to think of what to do with them. Furniture was an idea, but I already have a nightstand made out of a TE37 left in an antic we found when moving a family member in. So it's kind of a weak flex next to that. Also my fun cars are all german so no 5x114.3 pattern use there.
There's plenty of benefits to be had from carburetor swapping a non carburetor vehicle, that is if it isn't too much of a hassle. For 1) ease of tuning, if you learn carbs, they're incredibly simple to adjust the tuning of the air fuel mixture, and in turn, adjusting the power being made.
2) they're relatively cheap and easy to maintain.
3) they're very easy to fix/rig up. If you're driving a cheap build, and you break down somewhere, you can probably rig up the carb to get you by to the next stop, with efi when a part fails that's its. You gotta park the thing and walk your butt to the parts store.
Moral of the story, don't sleep on carburetors kids, they're still very useful.
not to sound like an old head (im 19 and my '74 bmw e3 is carbureted) but we might have to go back to carburetors since companies like cobb are not going to be able to help us tune for much longer. the epa cant ban screwdrivers

this isn't exactly relevant to the video but after seeing the section on chrome paints and just paint in general, it reminded me of a video thumbnail I once saw which was "rich people being exposed as poor people", and in the thumbnail someone had seemed to rip off a gold chrome wrap off an expensive car, insinuating that rich people buy solid gold cars.
.....as if manufacturers would legitimately go through with designing a solid gold car, from chassis to panels, just for rich people wanting attention.

Considering how they think that gold and diamonds on a car look good, that probably was an argument for buying a Ferrari for them.
For Gold as paint: Unless you have some special gold leaf flake paint (which is insanely expensive, because applying it is labor intensive), you would probably electroplate the car. Much more durable. That being said, most "gold plated" things aren't electrocoated with gold, but with titanium nitride. It looks like gold, but is much more durable.

Worth mentioning that carburettors are still around in motorcycles; some dirt bikes and small displacement single cyl motorcycles in some countries still come with carbs, up until around three to five years or so ago where emission norms caught on and trickled down to motorcycle motors and fuel injection became the way. Although really dirt cheap motorcycles in asian markets could still come with a carb.
Just a fun bit of trivia; early production models of the Mitsubishi Lancer GLX (CS3A-SRJR 2000-2003) actually came with an ECU'd carburetor from factory, likely because Mitsubishi hadn't finished rearranging the EFI for it by release. EFI/MPI/GDI versions of this particular Lancer roughly 1/4 way through the life of the first release. All facelifted versions came EFI/MPI/GDI though. This specific carburetor was known to be super finicky and hard to work with too; people would often swap it out for one from an earlier model of Lancer and bypass the ECU.
Also, people often use motorcycle carburetors as a cheaper alternative to installing ITBs on project cars.

actually bladed, most econobox cars here in Greece (probably Europe too) still use steelies so for that type of car to get the trim with alloy wheels is kinda cool

I was about to fall over laughing when you talked about carburators. I have people I know that are still stuck in the 1970s or earlier somewhere that still use that term or other old parts that were discontinued when talking about cars.
When it was said to me I had to look at him and scratch my head like did he just say he had to fix his carburator and such on his car. He was serious about what he said too like he knew something. He's right about most alloy wheels. I can actually attest to dodge rims. I worked in the plant that manufactured dodge suspension components and rims. They are hella checked before they even leave the plant, then rechecked by dodge techs before install

Lol, I've seen people selling civics that came with fuel injection that have had a carb intake swap, and cannot understand why someone would add buy a carb imtake instead of a standalone ecu as they'll go around the same price in my region 😂😂

I thought it was cool that my 1974 Nova had the Antenna in the windsheild which was pretty badass for the time. Now my SAAB 9-5 has a dummy fin on top (onstar cars and nav used the fin) and my radio antenna is in the rear side windows of the wagon and back window of the sedans

Hey bladed you should've mention that Carburattors are still a massive thing on (small) motorcycles.
On these types of engines Carburattors will Always be the way to go.
The last carb car trivia is weird, because my dad bought a brand new car in 1998, which is a '97 Corolla XE which had a carbourated 2E engine and I'm pretty sure the 4af variant of the corolla was also carbourated. My dad then went on to put a 7af block with a 4ag head in 2003 though and the car ran till 2016. I think it had an aluminium flywheel, stock clutch, toda camshaft, trd cam gears, stock internals and a side exit exhaust + a tvis delete.

I just watched the video and my friend and I are going to put a carburetor on his 97 celica because we’re tired of it giving us heck on trying to make it run, so we’re deciding to put a carb on it so we can have it up and running, it ran and drove yesterday Sunday the 8th and now it’s dead again so we’re making a carb adapter to put on either a 2 barrel Holley or a 1 barrel gm carb still doing research on it but we’re gonna start with a 3d printed intake for a proof of concept and seeing if we can get it made of metal after it’s tinkered out
Carburators were used well into the 80s but not at all in the 90s. Starting in 91 all us cars have some form of fuel injection. Sequential port fuel injection became standard in 96 with obd2. Now cars are also coming with direct injection

i'd like to make a sidenote on the gta carb thing. the vapid dominator and a plethora of other vehicles do have modeled carburetors, specifically most of them look (don't take this as fact) the chevy 305/350's (all those engines in between are basically the same). but hey if you say the same about one of the many other cars that you know are fuel injected fair enough
Hydraulic brakes were mainly put in because if you had uneven brake pressure it would send the car to the side with the most force. So they had hydraulic systems to equalize, and send equal pressure to every drum or caliper, so the car stopped evenly.
Back in the day doing marketing research for I think it was Chilton's manual probably that other brand. This was the 90s. They were asking people what they thought and this guy was complaining he could never find anything in the index. So he says like for example distributor I can't find distributor. It was the aroura manual. One of the first cars to go distributorless with direct ignition. I was screaming on the other side of the one-way glass.

High integrity aluminum casting involves shooting 1500 degree aluminum into a die at thousands of psi. Often times special hydraulic pins are driven into the casting as it starts to solidify in key places to force it to become more dense in that area. The entire die is water cooled, with different areas receiving different amounts of cooling based on how quickly the engineers want the metal to cool in that area. After casting the part will sometimes go through a heat treatment process that can take several hrs in giant industrial ovens with carefully controlled heating and cooling cycles.
Gravity cast aluminum is just melted and poured into a mold.
This is the difference between a corvette sub frame part vs a basic cylinder head.

I use to think that all cars that were drive by cable or push rod engines used carburetors
Push rod merely means no overhead cams and 2 valve per cylinder. While Pushrods are an old fashioned simple engine style, they did advance enough to become Fuel Injected.
Carburetor's are an engine part, not the entire engine. Meaning the engine can exist on it's own and evolve separately.

I did a school project (dissertation) about my project car and one of the guys who was grading me asked if I modified the carburator, I answered that it's a car from 2004 and he made a confused face and asked it again, luckily a another grader explained to him that carburators haven't existed for 30 years

Carburetors are the most relevant with Rotaries. There's a lot of people who run Webers and even a lot of EFI to Carby conversions with 13Bs and some 20Bs.
They're usually cheaper and easier to tune or at least get running.

Fun things is that in Russia we name wheels as "stamped", "cast" and "wrought" (hammered) where stamped wheels are the steel ones. "Alloy" was a very weird name for me at 1st. What alloy? Steel? Allu? Mg? Also, having strong hammered wheels is not always a good thing since those heavy hits what could damage the other wheel types, will go though... and hit your suspension for some more expensive damage.

Paint may be the most expensive but it's also the longest lasting. Very good paint jobs will take tedious and meticulous work. People who do really good work will use fine grit sand paper or even wet sand paper to get reflective smooth finishes.
Wraps on the other hand can be the best solution as long as the clear coat is durable and thick enough.
The only reason for antenna's is to pick up radio frequencies. If you want to add a radio to talk on channels you could use your standard car radio antenna.
Honestly some of the time a nice steel wheel can look nice. Here in australia we just call them stockies or interceptors.
I just discovered last weekend, that a friend actually does have a carburator in his daily car. It's a little Suzuki Swift from 1999. Boy I did not expect to find the thing there.
carbs make tuning engines so much easier. like on my 2004 mustang gt, i swapped to carb over efi so i can adjust the mixture screws and jets whenever i make changes, like when i put new cams in, there was no need for $500+ tuning software or messing with tables, just a vacuum guage, timing light and a/f gague

I have a 91 cb7 accord coupe and the one wheels are 3 piece steely I think but there aren’t hub caps so it could be an alloy, I recently found out that those wheels are actually pretty rare.
I know that NASCAR teams used paint their race cars and then use decals for the sponsors but since the early 2010’s they went to vinyl wrapping the race cars
Bud the carb is over half of what controls how good your mpg is and you realise you can tune your carb to more oxygen rich for more mpg or more gas rich for more power, the carb is a hugely important and crucial part to the perfect build
