Beaver Dam as a Water Control Device or Can't Beat Him- Use Him

- Drought conditions are drying up a lot of water habitat so I put some drain pipes in the beaver dam in an attempt to keep the water a a level that is good for all involved.
Going to be fun to see who wins Martin or the beaver. Good luck Martin. 🦫
The race is on!!
Nice job Martin! You definitely have a love for nature, and trying to please all of the critters. You are a kid at heart. Give a hey to Vonnie.
It is about having some fun, as you noted.
Good job Martin!
Hard work like that deserves a world famous Vonnie cherry pie.
Yes it does!!!!
He has a freezer full! Vonnie
@@vonnieskitchenmartinsshack5544 i had couple cherry pies(baked Sarah Lee's)with icing drizzled over them from arbys roast beef fast food place here. They're not as good as homemade!
Hopefully the drought isn't a bad one. I know we are starting to get our normal June rains a little early, but it was really dry and low a snow pack so we needed it. Thanks for sharing.
We have gotten a few dribbles but 4 inches down since March.
Good to see you! Hope all is well with you and Vonnie. Looking forward to your journey back to the cabin.
So am I
When i was a kid i loved playing at the river or in creeks making dams and controlling water flow. Watching him do this as an old man is actually fun.
And we loved wading in the creek also (or crick depending where you are from). But we really didn't like pulling leeches off from between our toes!!!! Vonnie
Beaver ponds are some of the prettiest waterholes there are and I use to be a duck hunter and beaver ponds make dandy duck holes.
Thanks for seeing the good in them.
Oh yeah, Ireally love the beavers on small streams I canoe in Canada.
Glad to have you back and uploading
Yes with a little prompting from my furry friends I found some content worth posting.
This is an update video I have been waiting for. That is an absolutely beautiful place up there. I agree that it’s always better to work with the flow of nature, rather than against it. It’s great to see a new video from you. As always, God bless sir.👍
Been a warm few weeks so thing are lush.
It’s been warm and very humid down here in SW Virginia.
Nice job. Can’t wait to see how the cabin is doing.
Now, that is going to be a long term project.
I enjoyed watching the first Misson on this, thanks for another update 👍
Plan C if needed could be interesting.
Good job, and Beautiful life ,god bless you always 🙏💞🥰👍
Thanks
Cool video Martin, I’m glad you figured out to solve the problem and help the wildlife! 🦫
I know all the critters are enjoying the sustained water levels.
We can tell you are a clever man, Martin. You've got to be about the only guy we know who could have pulled off this engineering feat without flooding those short boots! Looking forward to your next project update and a bit curious about what Vonnie has cooking this weekend... best to you both
There were some close calls.
Beavers are the most stubborn animal in the entire kingdom if you ask me. Very determined.
i want to use that stubbornness to keep my slough full of water, just not so high it floods the neighbors fields.
It's good to see you again, I hope you and Mrs. Vonnie are doing well.
All fine here but Vonnie had a bout of vertigo my MN cabin has been delayed.
@@vonnieskitchenmartinsshack5544 You could take on her cooking videos for a little while, show everyone how to fry the perfect fish. Lol, just a thought.
@@johnthompson9601 There's a funny story here, John. Mart said that whenhe retired we'd be eating catfish all the time. Well, he retired in 1999 and we have had catfish once because he has fished once. Guess it's not his bag! Vonnie
@@vonnieskitchenmartinsshack5544 😆 hahahaha!!
I see a Big Kid having Too Much Fun !!
Yeah, that too!
Working with nature. Love it. You dont have the I'm Alex predator and how dare you stop up my stuff. Good thing this beaver has a great soul like you around!!!
Thank you!
It is not a perfect set-up but we do have water for all the other wildlife.
Ive been missing your videos . Thats ok im sure the new 1s are worth waiting for.
Stlll hope to get to the MN cabin but I'm really late.
Beaver are attracted to the sound of crashing water. If no sound, they won't bother the dam.
The size of that snapper is amazing!
I hope he does not lose his mind if he can't find what to plug.
I loved playing in creeks when I was a wee lad,,your still a big
Kid!, good luck
You got that right!
Great video to watch before my devotion this morning. God bless my friends....
Another great place on those river bottoms.
Here in Ontario we use a similar tactic. Appropriately called a "beaver deceiver" lol. Have had best success with a tee installed at the top end so the intakes are to the left and right of the main pipe. They can't seem to comprehend the water co.ing in from the sides. Straight pipes intakes eventually get found and plugged up.
Thanks for the advanced info, no need for me to learn these things the hard way.
@@TheNorthwoodsman1 on a side note, I was pleased to stumble on to this channel as I recognized you in the thumbnail from your cabin videos. Another outdoorsy channel for me to follow!
You might need to add longer pipes on both sides of the dam. If pond side pipes are far enough under water, the beaver leave alone. If the drain pipe is longer & farther away from the dam, they don't bury it. If they do, put a water box over the end of the pipe end where the beavers can't block the exit. You can live with beavers. They are keystone species that are best water engineers for storage of water above & underground. Living with beavers requires some creative solutions.
I just grabbed what hose and tubes were lying around and will extent as needed. The game goes on.
Bird and animal paradise. Lovely.
You noticed.
Looks fun. Adapt and overcome 💪🏽
All fun here with nothing to lose for the effort.
Wow thats a big old boy turtle heaven. I watched an other vlog this week of a guy removing a beaver dam and like you he had done so several times so he decided to fix up a hunting cam and sure enough 3 beavers rebuilt the dam in one night !. Love your vlogs and attitude for nature.
I may need to add another tube now that rains have returned.
I’m glad to see you both are working well together I thought we would have to separate you. Lol. Good video Martin
It is not over yet!!
I wonder if you ask him nicely and tell him to move on that he is not welcomed here if he would leave. Lol. Good luck Martin !!
@@richarddemers1750 If I can ever meet him face to face I will suggest he move downstream about a mile and build a dam there. A much better place in this human's view.
I take it this was filmed at some other time. Here in Wyoming (at 7,000 ft.) it's still snowing a bit. We are getting green though. :)
It was fresh off the camera the day it was filmed and quickly posted. We had a hot streak and it really greened up fast.
@@vonnieskitchenmartinsshack5544 Lucky you!
Thanks you my friend 💕
Nice to get something out there.
Having dealt with beavers 🦫
They are perhaps the Most beneficial and resourceful mammal, in nature.
In second, my choice would be wolves, a very helpful predator.
Fantastic! Hope Vonnie feels better soon.👍😏🇨🇦👌💃
Much better this morning, thinks she turned the corner.
Thanks, Marian. After two rounds of antibiotics I'm raring to go! Mart did have to plant my tomatoes for me. 35 plants!!! Didn't plan on that many! I've told the neighbors I should have a good crop, come one and all. And they are all heirloom so I will do a video showing each one as they ripen. Vonnie
I love your idea! please do an update, on how the beaver reacted :)
Will do.
Man hole cover sized turtles. Looks like a beautiful chunk of land. I will certainly stick around to see how the world's most industrious animal copes with your truck.
First time visiting. I'll sure be back.
Martin comes up with the most interesting solutions. Welcome aboard. I believe there is a follow up video being worked on even and I type! Vonnie
I've always heard French drain pipe ( with the big holes) is what works.
Yes, all those holes witll baffle them for a while.
That McGivering Will Sure Work, Thanks For This Martin ! Hi Vonnie ! ATB T God Bless
Can't wait to see what it looks like after a few nights with the late shift working on it.
Beautiful view
Sure hope that works out for the other habitat. Looks like a good job. Never know with those beavers though.
Time will tell.
Boy I'm behind on seeing your videos, You Tube is not show most of my Subscribed to videos????? * I find this interesting & am learning!! Good for you Martin, in reserving the nature there. OPPS, I spelled SLOUGH, wrong in the other video, thanks for sharing that info. Do take care. Fl.
Finally human uses his head
There is a distinct possibility that the beaver may plug up your pipe!
That is the million dollar question.
Yup they plug culverts all the time.
Good luck with the water control. I’m very curious, as are you, to see if this works.
I will be checking it in a few day, fingers crossed.
Hello beautiful
Nice conversation effort there sir
Ninja beaver vs Old Guy. My money is on the Ninja!
Whoa there-that’s one big turtle you have there Son!
You will probably win that bet.
Curious to see how that wise old beaver reacts to your construction mixed in with his.😂🪵🦫 Especially if he hears any strange gurgling in the pipe!
It may be mental cruelty.
His sensitivity to water pressure will direct him straight to it.
Nothing more peaceful than watching and listening to the sights and sounds of mother nature. Hope you have that beaver scratching his head! 🦫🪵
that plank was on sale at lowes. you got a good pile of fire wood there)
Great Video hope the running water doesn't drive the beaver insane .
Maybe we can go to the clinic under the buddy system.
It occurs to me that rather than just throwing the dam material down stream, it might be as well to burn it on top of the beaver dam, to save the same material being used over and over again....
I have noted that he has taken nothing from my discard pile on the back side of the dam. Time will tell if he can figure that out or if he just keeps working with his instincts.
The beaver will be back and you will have to drain more water soon. Good luck and hang in there you may win this war yet! HA Time for coffee and a cherry pie. God bless you and your sweet wife, Vonnie. From deep southeast Mississippi
I am itching to get back and see what he has been up to.
Take that Mr. Beaver😂😂😂
Need to check things out later today.
Well done! Only a smart person works with nature and not against it.
I get my fun wherever I can!!
Where did you get this type of PVC pipe? Thanks.
Curious to see who wins....eventually you may need Steve rinella’s beaver stew recipe though
Hope it does not come to that. I wish he would dam up and flood the drained slough I showed.
Do you know the name of the bird (at 00:53, 5:15) and all through this, that sounds like a low pitched whistle? As in a whistle a coach or referee would use?
Cool video mate
Thanks
This is pure common sense. work with nature instead of against it after all Mother Nature has had millions of years to perfect her ideas
I hope she does not mind me using her pets for my water control project.
You are going to shock that old beaver, lol
Honestly I would put them pipes further in the dam there's plenty of water for them to be in
I will promise you if I know Beaver he's going to go down the stream and put another dam
If it is just far enough down the fall of the land is enough for it to be OK.
Now this is a good day with a video from Martin, one from Northern Seclusion, and one from Better Bachelor. BTW, if he's a smart old beaver, won't he just build a new dam if he can't "fix" this one?
That's what I'm predicting. I think he'll build another dam on the other side of the lower end of the pipe. I know almost nothing about the behavior of beavers but I'll be tuning in to find out
You know we should have a lottery to guess the final outcome! Vonnie
When I took out the main dam last month there were three more downstream that I drianed too. There is enough of a elevation drop in that spot that it will not be a problem.
Have been missing your videos!! Are you all planting gardens this year? Wow i didn't know it was so dry up through your places! Hope you all get rain you need as you need without flooding! Man you have gotten slim!! Not that you were heavy anyway. Sure wish i could slim down like you! Don't think i can sling that sledge hammer,ax,& chain saw like you though! You have a brilliant mind,as well as Vonnie! Vonnie i pray you get & stay
well in Jesus's Name! I used to have fluid in my middle ear or whatever that is,wake up room was spinning 90mi hr! Couldn't get up or walk,& sometimes even with eyes closed. Dr said fluid gets trapped in & around middle ear. I just take benedryl, bonine or another antihistamine over the counter,or too bad keep few phenergan tabs with prescription to have on hand.
Hello Verna. I feel like I am back with the living. Well I am feeling better into a second round of anitbiotics. But interestingly I think I know how I got the vertigo. I had the sinus problem and then did a bunch of weeding up and down. Well two days later I had vertigo. With the fluid in my ears I think those tiny crystals in my ears got dislodged. Wasn't a bad bout and I did my head excercises. Whew. Back to 90 mph!!! God made us so intricate that two tiny crystals move a bit and we ar dizzy!!! Thanks for the prayer. Mart had to plant my tomatoes for me. 35! Didn't plan on that many but I have informed neighbors I should have a great crop. Mine are all heirlooms and will do a video as they ripen so folks can see. Have a blessed Memorial Day and stay safe, Verna! Vonnie
What part of Northern Illinois are you in ?
Very top central.
....so...what would happen with the siphon thing if you drilled some small holes along the length of the pipe(s)?
Haha...that would mess with the beaver's head, eh? lol!
I now have the inlets at the level I want the water to be at. With 5 four inch tubes and the power of siphon it could have drawn down too much. Two weeks now of constant level and no plugging.
Hence the term "a busy beaver".😜
Right
Dig a little more and install the pipe under the Beaver dam.
I am going to add a bigger one soon.
Good man. Work with nature not against it.
I think we will come to a workable compromise.
Maybe you could use a trail camera to see the beaver
Might be the answer for this phantom.
Turtles are a nice size hope they do ok .
Me too, they have lived through other drougths.
Martin your drainage system slew me
Now awaiting the results.

Slew or Slough ?
Guess my joke didn't hold water
Drought is part of the cycle, it's natural. You might have found the best possible way to handle a water shortage.
I am enjoying the challenge and seeing that slough so full of water as the others go to mud basins.
what I would guess is that the beaver will go down stream 25 to 50 feet and build a dam below the outlets.
Time will tell, so far he is too frantic about this one leaking.
Where have you been, haven’t seen you in a long time.
Mostly working off the honey-do list.

But I want to use him and his dam so having fun with this.

I don't think you got your pipes out far enough - he will plug them! Cheater statement: I already saw the next video after this one, so I know my statement is true! LOL!
I do not think I am done yet but enjoying it all.
Maybe you could bribe the beaver. With some of vonnies famous pies?
Oh no, not that big a bribe.
Ps. sorry you had to get your hair cut😉
Sit a trap for him.
I think we can use each other with a little more tweaking of the drains.
If you can't beat beavers you're not trying hard enough.
We still lhave not gotten to a middle ground.
I kept watching for you to end up sitting in the mud.
Close but no cigar.
TNT works
I took the dam out so many times the neighbors may have had no windows left.
@@vonnieskitchenmartinsshack5544 I thought that was you when my windows shook here in northern Wisconsin!
Dynamite it to pieces
George, when you said that it reminded me that when we were kids.....don't snicker...many farmers had a few sticks of dynamite on hand or could easily get it. And I remember thinking nothing of it if you heard a big boom. We just figured a farmer somewhere was landscaping the farm!!! Vonnie
@@vonnieskitchenmartinsshack5544 My Dad had a local college come out with a demolition class They blew the Beaver dam up and redug the ditch for a piece The beavers never came back

Not a waste, its entertainment and I do want to keep the water level up in this drought we are having in northern Illinois.
