failing to prepare is preparing to fail. other excellent demos on cutting in don't mention preparation of edges and your attention to this helps me understand why my cutting in has been so frustrating. simple, unpretentious, very helpful I have two bedrooms, a lounge, staircase, bathroom and all their doors and windows to cut in so this has been very helpful. Thank you from North East England

I trawled through loads of youtubers, and nearly all were terrible, apart from this fella.
They all took forever to get to the point, and made me watch them paint a full wall for no reason.

brilliant, clear explanation. Why is it that all the best paint videos are from Oz or NZ ?
Maybe they are done by tradesman instead of handymen.

Great information on cutting in!! Trouble is you cant paint over silicone? But you can on regular fillers!!🤔🇬🇧👍
You are correct you can't paint over silicone but you can paint over an acrylic sealant like I have used in this video.

Great video. How do you deal with wavy lines. I have a bedroom freshly plastered but the ceilings lines are a bit wavy pls help
You have two choices, try to follow the wavy lines or just paint a straight line as best you can, not following the waves but like connecting the high spots or low spots.

well done. Quick question - how long should a quality 2.5" brush last with proper cleaning?
All brands very, the rougher the surface the more it will wear the brush down. Some brushes may only last one complete house repaint and others can last for months. Just say you cut in the walls on a complete interior of a house, by the time you have done first coat you might notice its not as sharp for cutting in but it still looks perfect. I will use old brushes where I can and use new ones when I need straight lines.

More videos please:) The decorating world needs guys like you who can pass some important tips which you wont see in College:) Maybe think about setting up a 1 hour learning channel once a week on aspects of advance painting and charge to view, like members only. 5 pound for 1 hour and you could get a 1000 views easy paying:)
Thanks for your support, I just need a bit more time to start up loading again. I will look into what you saying. sounds like a good idea.

Where are you from Mandy and what college are you going to.
@@howtopaintinfo Hi, i passed College some years back to build a career in decorating which i love so much. Then i got married and had 2 children and and now i am slowly getting back into it. I could watch your videos all day because you are very direct to the point and have learnt so much over time. Decorators with your knowledge and experience can pass on valuable tips which can enhance a painters finish to near perfection if not perfection. I am 100% sure there is a huge market out there in youtube wanting to learn from painters like your self. Dont wait too long to set it up as good ideas get snapped up:)
I have a friend like you, she started her apprenticeship but never finished, has also got married had two kids and she would like to get back into painting again.
So you just went to a college to learn is that correct? It seems there are less and less tradesman out there these days, everyone is doing a college course which lacks on the job training.
What if you have to do more than one coat? What are your thoughts on using tape for cutting in and on trim?
Paint can still bleed behind tape so I only use where necessary.

Fantastic video and great tips. Another option for those just incapable of having a steady hand is to use a high quality tape and mask off your cuts, especially for baseboards, door frames and vertical accent walls. It can often leave a razor sharp edge that can't be replicated freehanded and can save a lot of time if you're trimming out an entire house, double coated as you should.
Taping can work but it is time consuming to use, paint can bleed under tape and you can peel paint off wall when removing the tape so there are good reasons not to use tape.

Hi. What grit do you use, 80/120/180/220? Thanks
Depends on what I'm sanding, rough or poor condition timber I would use 80 grit, most surfaces 120 and for a sand in between coats a soft 120 grit or finer sandpaper or sanding sponge/block. Hope that helps.

I'm wondering if it might be easier to roll the lower part of the wall, and then cut in afterward. I know that's unconventional, but it might help avoid not to have to roll over the brush strokes. This might work well with a technique I've seen of bankrolling the cut-ins with a mini roller (to give the cut-in area the same texture as the lower part of the wall that's been rolled). Thoughts?
I would never use a mini roller when cutting in, it slows you down to start with and I have seen some one do it and if you look closely after they have rolled the walls you can see where they have painted with the mini roller. We call it the picture frame affect where you can see the cutting in or in this case where they used the mini roller. If you roll as close to the cutting in as possible it will turn out fine.

Hi:) Have you caulked the cutting in lines in a room before?
Yes, most of the time.
Don't forget to Like, Share and Subscribe.
Can I just ask what might be a basic question. Ive started using water based. If I do the skirtings first, when I roll the walls I get small specs of paint on the skirtings then I have to go back and do them again. How can I avoid doing this please?
Paint the walls first, I know there are other painters that do the stupid thing and paint skirtings first but you paint walls first to avoid exactly what happen to you.

Hi, I have cut in as per vid and emulsioned wall . But when dry I am left with a lighter shade of paint where I have cut in to the rest of the wall . What am I doing wrong? Thanks
Some colours are hard to work with, also make sure there is not water in the brush and if you can just paint one wall at a time.. Try to keep the cutting in wet then roll. Or maybe you are not using enough paint when cutting in.

Can you please confirm you're left handed please. I'm struggling to find my angle with an angle brush and someone that can relate. Thank you
Yes I'm left handed but also use my right hand. Using an angle brush should be the same as a straight cut brush but straight cut brushes are better over all. You should be able to hold the brush at between 30 and 45 degrees and that should be enough angle to work with, I hope that helps.

How do you do the corners?
I will do a video on that soon.

You should always make sure you remove all excess caulk from the corner or what was a 90 degree line becomes a semi circle reducing the crispness of the line
Yes it does, you can see how to do it properly in this video,

So do you caulk in all your cutting in jobs
Not all the time, it depends on how the surface looks and if its good enough to paint as is.

Thought you have to keep the corners wet before you roll ? It always shows darker i corners if I let dry especially if going for one coat 😤
True for some dark colours, this one was ok as it was from a white base from memory. But yes it is best practice to keep wet on wet with dark colours.

Gold: "What is does, that paint there, give something for your brush to slip along".
Seen it done, never really understood why. Me thinking it was to put a thicker section down. Thanks.
No worries, and it does help to get the paint on thicker.

I have a tip for you mate, don't use the side of the brush and you save yourself heaps of time by not painting it twice.
You mean don't use the brush side on!!!! Using it side on or angled slightly it how you get a line, also two passes is the easiest way to also get a straight line. If you have too much paint on your brush it ends up on the ceiling and if you don't have enough paint on the brush you will get misses and need to do it again.
