    Dave painted our house in 2008 using this approach and it never fails to impress. I should have paid more attention back then on how he made the lines look so sharp and clean. I needed to repaint a room and went in search of this technique to the pleasant surprise found David giving away his trade secrets! He is a master craftsman with a great eye and a true pleasure to have on the job!

    This is pretty sweet. I'm currently painting my whole house and so far my method is to paint the ceiling, then tape the ceiling corner with 3M multipurpose blue tape. Then I paint the walls. The problem I'm seeing is two-fold, the transition line isn't that great as you mentioned with ceilings undulating, and the tape tends to pull the ceiling paint off.
    I'll be using your method moving forward, thanks!

    This gave me the crisp line I was looking for. But unfortunately I use the standard blue tape and it pull some of the wall paint off. Only in a few spots and I was able to touch up with no problems. Next time I'll use the tape you suggested. I remember, years ago they use to sell a cut in paint pad that would make this line. I haven't seen this for sale anywhere. I used it the first time I painted this room. Thanks for the great video. I apricate the time and effort that it takes to make them.

      I've been painting for 15 years and that's exactly how I do it to always paint the ceilings first then cut in the walls (w/o tape) you are experienced with a brush which I pride myself on then your lines should come out clean. Also a lot of walls have that divot in the corner where the ceiling meets the wall it makes it easy to cut straight lines without getting on the ceiling texture.

    Straight lines come from length and stability. Smoosh the pit of your brush against the wall (Almost like your holding your brush backwards?)and use two or three bristles to run a long bead. Personally for me, that couple of mm of ceiling finish on the wall looks a little weird - but if you're clients are happy than that's all that matters.

    Okay, so I am awful at cutting in my line on the wall to the ceiling joint free hand. So I use the reverse method of your technique. I paint my ceiling, wait 24-48 hours, cut in walls then go to the top tape ceilings and use an edger tool to get perfect lines. However, there have been a few instances where the paint has been removed from the cieling.I have always used 3m blue ( which you referred to as medium) and I wonder if that is the issue. I purchased purple for a current project. What are your thoughts on this method?

    • @DaveMartin
      @DaveMartin  3 года назад

      So you do a corner to corner cut (no line whatsoever)?
      In the video I cover three issues of why the tape will pull off the paint so if it's not one of those reasons, then the only other reason is that sometimes when painting, if the wall or ceiling was originally done in an oil or higher sheen paint and not cleaned and sanded before painting, the new paint will not adhere well. In this scenario when you go to pull the tape the bond between the old paint and the new paint will not be strong and the tape will pull the paint off. To see if this is the problem, note the paint that is on the tape; if it's just the new color, then the bond between the old and new paint is weak. If the paint that comes off on the tape is not the newest coat but a coat done a long time ago, then it was a weak bond when the painting was done a long time ago. The former problem is easy to solve (clean and sand the old paint before painting), the latter problem is much harder to notice. The best way to check before you tape everything up is to test a small area with tape first (noted in the video).
      As for your method, I've tried the straight edge, but personally, I don't like having to move and clean the edger. Once taped and sealed, I don't have to think about it so I prefer that method. If it works well and you are comfortable with it, you should clearly stick with it!
      Thanks!

  • @micp6029

    Hi, if you have a crown moulding, where do you tape? Also, if the color for the moulding is dark brown (semi gloss), and your ceiling (flat white) and wall (Satin white),what should you paint first? Thanks

    • @DaveMartin
      @DaveMartin  3 года назад +1

      With crown, I will usually tape to the bottom edge of the crown for the walls. If there is enough of a lip at the bottom of the crown, I would tape about 1/16" onto the lip away from the wall.
      For the ceiling, because your crown is brown, this will be more of a subjective call. If you like the ceiling line I did in the video, then I would just follow that. But because it's trim, you may want to take the tape all the way to the ceiling, in other words, tape right where the wall meets the ceiling.
      As for painting order, I would paint the crown first, the ceiling second and the walls third.

      Undulating ceilings are a problem. The best way is to just do the best you can. I find if you can apply the tape at eye level you can get a better sense of the line. You can adjust the tape just a bit to straighten it out as best you can.
      I'd be glad to send a couple of pictures of a job I'm doing now which has some ceiling issues if you would like. Would just need an email address, I could send them off tomorrow sometime.

    I’m not sure why you would want to do this instead of using caulk.
    With caulk you can paint immediately. You don’t need to wait for it to dry. And pulling tape right away is not an inconvenience… it’s faster.

  • @raymondrepede6963
    @raymondrepede6963 3 года назад

    How do you cut in at the ceiling if you are not painting the ceiling itself, especially if you no longer have any leftover ceiling paint?

    • @DaveMartin
      @DaveMartin  3 года назад +3

      What I usually do is purchase a quart of a ceiling paint that is really close in color (try to get it as close as possible) to the ceiling color, and the same sheen as the ceiling.
      When you paint the walls, try to get close the ceiling, but try not to get any of the wall color on the ceiling, do the best you can here. Tape up as noted in the video, seal the tape with the wall paint, again, try not to get any wall paint on the ceiling. Once that is dry take the new quart and paint from the middle of the tape up to the ceiling, right where the wall meets the ceiling, just do the best you can here. You want to try and make sure you don't get too much of the new ceiling paint on the ceiling in case the colors are a little different.
      If the ceiling color is a bit different from the original ceiling color, it won't matter because the new ceiling color will only be on the wall (the 1/8" ceiling cut in line); it will be almost impossible to see the difference between the new ceiling color and the old ceiling color.
      Does that. make sense?

  • @luckystrike656
    @luckystrike656 3 года назад +1

    So, basically for a perfect line with no bleeds I need to paint both the ceiling and the wall?
    I wanted to do just the wall, so you have any tip?
    Ant where do you recommend to place the tape if the angles between ceiling-wall and inner angles of 2 walls are not straight or in perfect square?
    We are doing a darker green and the rest is white

    • @DaveMartin
      @DaveMartin  3 года назад

      Is there any chance you have any of the old ceiling color or know the exact color, brand, line and sheen of the ceiling color? If so, just use that.
      If you do not have access to the old paint then I would purchase a quart of a ceiling color that is as close to the original ceiling color as possible. When you paint the walls, try to get really close to the ceiling, but try not to get any wall paint on the ceiling (do the best you can). Tape up like I show in the video, then seal the tape with the wall color. Again, try not to get the wall paint on the ceiling (again, do the best you can). Finally when you go to do the ceiling color, take the new ceiling color and paint, but just to the very edge of the ceiling trying not to get any of the ceiling paint on the ceiling. The idea here is that if the new ceiling color does not exactly match the old ceiling color you won’t be able to tell because you will have only applied the new ceiling color to the wall to create the white line. You won’t notice the difference between the old and new ceiling color because of the vertical and horizontal surfaces receive light differently, so if the two whites are not exact the same it will be really hard to tell. Do the best you can to minimize the new ceiling paint from getting on the ceiling; If you are able to keep the new ceiling color off the ceiling, you won’t see it.
      Does that make sense?
      This process will be a bit more time consuming and because you have to be careful, might be harder than it seems. If you find you don’t have a steady hand, you could tape up the edge of the ceiling right where the ceiling meets the walls (so you would be placing tape on the ceiling, right where the ceiling meets the wall), seal the tape with the new white paint where the tape meets the wall, wait for that to dry, then paint your wall color and follow my video. This way you are protecting the ceiling from wall and new ceiling paint. Does that make sense?
      Another thing to keep in mind is do you have existing wall paint on the ceiling now? If so, you need to keep that in mind when painting your cut in line. Since you will need to cover the old wall paint, you may need to paint the ceiling in areas with the new ceiling paint to cover the old wall paint that exists on the ceiling.

      @@DaveMartin hi, thank you very much for the explanation.
      Since I'm impatient when have a project I already did it.
      I taped the ceiling as straight as I could.
      Both wall and ceiling where white, but I wasn't sure how to place the tape to seal it with white so I jumped that step.
      I mus say that I have just a few little bleeds but I'm very happy with the result. Need to buy a small brush to to a few retouches.
      Actually the walls are not straight, but I managed to place the tape to minimise the effect.
      There are 2 thing that went wrong.
      I bought 2 samples green color, both Dulux, and the sales guy told me that which ever I choose in the end it will cover the samples I did on the wall.
      Not true. I have a square that is slightly different, maybe not that much in color but in light reflection.
      The second thing is I asked for a completely washable (because I have a dog) white paint.
      Not sure how to translate, it's like varnish, glossy and plastiky to the touch, not breathable, like car paint or the ones for metal, but he gave me a Dulux Diamond half matt paint, so now I have to redo the hallway...
      Tnx again for all you information and videos you share.

    • @DaveMartin
      @DaveMartin  3 года назад +2

      @@luckystrike656 That's too bad, because of the dog, an eggshell or satin finish might have worked better.
      I use a product called Scuff-X from Benjamin Moore and it is great for scenarios like yours. I know that changing brands is a pain, but it might be worth a look.
      As for the sample patches showing through, the thing to keep in mind is that the more coats of paint, the shinier the area will become, no matter the sheen. So even when you paint two coats of paint over your samples, those sample spots may show up shinier.
      Thanks so much for the feedback and comments.

      I started doing this method in about 1998. In those years only two clients did not like it and it was because they were tall and had shorter ceilings. They did not like it because they said they were basically staring right at the line. If you are concerned, I would do a small area and see if you like it. 8' should be high enough so as not to be an issue. This really does come down to personal preference.

Since you will need to cover the old wall paint, you may need to paint the ceiling in areas with the new ceiling paint to cover the old wall paint that exists on the ceiling.

      there are only two colors; the ceiling color and the wall color. the paint line on the wall is the ceiling color.

      @@DaveMartin that’s just insane. I don’t think I have ever seen a line that is the same color as the ceiling show that much contrast. Looks amazing and will be doing this next week. Thank you for the tip and reply!

    I thought If you let the paint dry with the tape still on, when you pull the tape off it'll chip the paint.

      I’ve had that problem occur too. How come that’s not happening when you pull your tape off Dave? Maybe it’s the angle that I take it off that’s causing the problem?

    Great tip and looks next level but not very practical time wise if you're hired to paint one room.

      True, so to be honest, I just increase my labor number.
      I realize there is a ton of competition for painting, and price is a major consideration. But if you find your niche, that clients are willing to pay for, then that is the key.
      Thanks much for the comment!
