My boss has been painting for 38yrs! Can't teach him nothing new! That's where your content comes in perfect for me! I learn new tips on jobs all the time by following along! Becoming a professional!
💯 this is your boss you're fired..🤣 I'm pretty sure your boss did the job at a level 5 paint job. But I know exactly what you're talkin about. . My recommendations keep your mouth shut and just get paid👊🏼👍🏼🍻
If someone is not a pro and doesn't have as steady of a hand: Should we use frog tape on the ceiling to be on the safe side? Or hold one of those flat pieces of plastic against the ceiling while stroking, to protect the ceiling? I can't see myself NOT getting paint on the ceiling with the method in the video....
I'm going to paint a 20m wall by myself. Do you recommend doing the cut-in in sections? E.g. cut in 5m top and bottom of wall and roll or would you cut-in the whole wall in one go?
Dude I just did 3 rooms in my house, and did my cut ins with the same brush. It is all new sheet rock with knock down texture, watched a few of your videos and ended getting over the fear of messing up. Came out great imo, Thanks for the great content
I’ll be honest I’ve done my share of painting and I’ve never back rolled my cut in, and could never see any kind of difference when the paint dries, but I understand you’re a perfectionist and it has to be done a certain way. Can’t go wrong backrolling, i guess that’s why you’re a pro
It's mostly if you let your edge draw and tbe type of sheen your pain t is and texture of the wall. I've down both ways but this is nicer since it gives you more room for your roller avoided touching the ceiling.
I've been doing this ever since wizz rollers came out , another tip for everyone that you didn't touch on is to use your whole body when you cut in as one not just your arm 1 you don't wear your arm out and to your more stable and if you increase the speed your lines become straighter and more uniform this building muscle memory which always gives you laser lines I get the comment fromy customers or who ever is around an how do you get your lines so perfect free hand. Well there ya go painters use your body not just your arm practice it pay attention and I promise you will thank me later ....great video tho more of the girls plz hahahahah
Get in a comfortable athletic position, engage all your muscles and move you feet not just your arm or back. Think of it as locking out your body in a comfortable position. Don't lean off ladders esther.
@@DiceRoller96 I think they mean it's when you are concentrating and you let your arm get too close to the wet paint below where you're trying to cut in and smear it.
I grew up in a family of painters and I've been doing it off and on since 1996. Seen alot of ways and alot of differences of opinions. Yes I agree with the back rolling on certain paints and colors because of the haloing. I also use my 5in1 to put a light gouge or cut line where wall meets ceiling so when cutting out it helps me make a straight cut out line. If you get your brush to fan out right and your bristles go in the line you scored in where wall and ceiling meet your cut lines come out almost perfect... I do enjoy your videos and I have learned a thing or 2 as well... Thanks
I don't like it. For one, the ceiling line should be fixed. It's terribly uneven. Second, I prefer to tape. At least with tape, you can get the illusion of a straight line, even when the ceiling is as uneven as this one seems to be. If I hired a painter and he did this "cut-in" job for me, I would not be happy. To me, this process makes the unevenness glaring. On top of that, most people can't draw a straight line, and that includes professionals. If you can't draw a straight line, then I certainly don't want to pay you to paint one. The quality of brush will not matter much.
I'm not a professional painter but just a really good painter and your videos have helped me get much better. I have an issue with one coating walls. It seems chicken shit. If you can't afford two coats, don' paint the wall... Even if the paint covers it's amazing how that second cut in dials in your ceiling angles and trim so much better. Explaining about a 1 coat finish and how to split hairs on a zig zag finish with a roller seems silly. Great job explaining the back rolling. I have tried your caulking tape lines with great success too. White untextured ceiling, dark chocolate brown and medium grey colours met in corners. Looked amazing sharp! Used delicate frog tape and and another brand of tape. Premoistening the tape is such a good trick too
Just great videos! Thanks for the effort it takes to put these out. I do property maintenance, which for me means everything but HVAC (which also means I'm not an expert in anything ha ha). Painting apartments is one thing, painting my client's upscale home is quite another. Your tutorials have given me the confidence to tackle a project at a client's home.
Watched a bunch of your cut in videos and just got over the fear of ugly lines and touching the ceiling and it's looking great. Thanks for taking your time to teach us DIY'ers 🤙

Hey paint life love watching your guys videos. Do you guys stay pretty busy in the winter time there . I know how the winters are there I live in Spokane we still have snow . I know we try to stack interiors all year for the winter times .
You have white voids at the top of that wall cut. real crews do not use a whiz roller like that. too slow and unnecessary. you simply roll from the floor with a 9" while your cut is still wet. You would only get haloing if the paint sets up super fast in a hot room or you're not using a soft brush, or you just don't know how to brush out your paint.
About to paint another room, walls and ceiling, looking for tips to make it easier so going to try this and few other bits of advice from your other videos. Go me!!
Love your techniques. This works so well especially for semigloss paint. Seamless paint job. Thanks for all your knowledge. I'm updating our entire house by myself and these tips really help so much!
Initial thought…this back rolling is nonsensical contractor jive. Walked around my house and damn…your right. Never noticed the contrast between brushed and rolled. Now I’m forever stuck seeing this “defect”. Thanks OCD. Next job, will give it a try. If your still monitoring comments to this video, I have a question. How saturated is your roller when your back rolling?
To the people in the comments saying you never use a back roller you’re missing the point. Is your channel jumpin like his? No? Ok so that’s what matters. Maybe you can learn something lol
With dark colors it’s a great idea what your doing with. Light colors cut in with about a couple inch cut line and feather it out and always start lower from the ceiling than work your way up with less paint on the brush as it’s much easier to get a nice cut without hitting the ceilings. I like your idea there 💯 I’ve been painting 35 years and was taught by my father from Italy and always be willing to learn no matter how good a pro painter you are. Great video 👍👍👍
I am happy to have found these tips. I’ve always believed in good paint and good brushes, and taking care of my brushes. I once was going to Mexico to paint my condo, brought my brushes!
You sir are a legend. Done a load of jobs lately without any haloing, razor sharp cut ins, then the current job had some horrific haloing. I also use a 3” Wooster brush. Nice kit.
Yup yup exactly.it blends everything in.expecially the color you use.you will be able to see on all the the peaks and valleys.lol.you said that at the same time i was commenting it
I am just beginning and I love painting. Today, I noticed that after I finished rolling the wall I have waves. What did I do wrong? Can I do something do make it look better?
*If you do get picture framing from the trim after the first coat of the roller, is it best to NOT do a second cut in and add a second coat to even the color out?*
Omg, this has helped me sooo much. I’ve been pulling my hair out as to why the wall I painted has left a line between the cut in and the rolling. Now I know, back roll and don’t let it dry before I roll it. I’ve changed to quite a dark colour so it really sticks out. Many, many thanks.
I’m noticing sometimes that the cuts look darker than my rolls. I don’t always backroll, but I do roll really tight into a wet cut. Probably as close as you’re getting here with your back rolling. I’m thinking the back roll would make the cut even darker. It’s normal the time, but there isn’t really a rhyme or reason. I’m not rolling too thin, or uneven. Definitely rolling before my cut dries. Drives me fking nuts. I noticed your brush strokes are kind of short too. Not sure that’s the problem. I finish off the area I’m cutting in. My cuts are much straighter when I run my brush further.

Your videos are great very informative and it’s great to get insight from a man that is what he does everyday making key distinctions along the way how to improve. There is a lot to painting and if I could afford it I would have a pro do it because that’s what they do
off topic to this video but I’m in desperate need of advice. I have a house with lvl 5 smooth walls and we are trying to airless spray the wall and ceiling paint but we keep getting bubbles and it’s a nightmare 😭😭😭 could really use some expert advice on why it’s happening and how to avoid it
Another good vid man. I like your point about paining your line on the ceiling vs the wall. I think that would be a good topic. It’s fairly subjective, but when I am deciding which surface I’m going to use for my line I go by perspective. Most short ceilings and typical walls I paint the line on the ceiling. Rarely will anyone be sitting or standing at the wall looking straight up, but they will look at it from across the room. Opposite for vaults and odd high spaces. If you can’t look fairly level at the top of the wall (say looking up at the top of a vaulted wall in a foyer) you will notice the line on the ceiling before you would at the top of the wall. And probably all vice versa with dark ceilings and light walls, I’m still learning.
I have a question sir. I have a problem cutting in on an inside corner, where there are to different colors. How do the professional’s cut in straight down the wall. Over at the schools, it looks straight. This person told me that they used tape.need answer please.
Thank you, but it is so difficult with the texture ceiling and wall, the paint line intends to get rough due to a bunch of craters. What is the solution to this? I just usually have to do a touch up at the end

Biggest tip I can give is to not think of using your wrist. Your shoulders and elbow guide the brush . Your arm swipes with motion
Slow. And not correct technique. You cut it and roll with your 9" roller while still wet. Amateur.

Mask with FrogTape
I just replied to this video. Frog tape is pretty wonderful.
I suppose this is for beginners. I’m a 40 year painter. The cut is too wide. I cut about 4 inches.
If I’m slow, and I’m concerned about the cut-in drying before I can roll, would it be ok to let the cut-in fully dry before rolling?
On first coat it’s okay. But on second coat do 1 wall at time.
