You really are the first person who showed me this. I started my company not long after seeming this and ran into walls that were curved into the ceiling. I was able to make the job look absolutely perfect, and I did the curved ceiling taping by eye and caulking it and peeling for a DONE product that was gorgeous in about 10 min. Thank you
The yellow Fog tape is great as well, especially on a newly painted surface when you are doing touch ups. When it comes to the blue tape, if you used the 1 inch for that like you did for the Frog tape you can round it out better than the inch and a half tape but, you got us into using Frog tape over the 3M blue tape and the Frog tape doesn't bleed through as much as the blue tape does. My dad is an old school professional painter, he's had his own business since 1974 and has done high end jobs exclusively...he's 78 and still works and loves it. He simply says, every painter has a way of doing a job his own way and whatever works for them is fine so long as the job is done right but he also says that always be open to new ways of doing things as well. Its funny, he was an oil base primer guy and swore by the Benjamin Moore Fresh Start oil based primers and if you told him to try a premium latex primer he would shun it and call you crazy. Well, one job about three years back he did a job on a newly renovated finished basement where everything had new sheetrock. The tapers came in, did what they did, sanded and cleaned and since it was a basement my dad experimented with the more expensive Benjamin Moore latex primer and he absolutely loved using it on the bare sheetrock that he now is going away from the oil based primer unless he is priming bare wood. The point is, never be afraid to try something new every now and then and that includes using tape and other techniques.
This technique is GOLD! I recently painted over 2000 sq ft and this technique is the best way to get perfect lines every time! Thanks again for the tips!

Thank you for this great tip. I’m not a professional but I have done a lot of painting and this may be my favorite painting trick. It makes such a difference. The only bad part about it is that I have to go through my house and redo all of my transitions. You rock!
Dude...who knew?! That is the BEST tutorial ever on using tape to make straight lines. He was ALWAYS there to take care of it... There were several home projects He intended to do, buying the materials, tools,...I started finding around the house. Still new, sealed with its store tags... "Mom...what are these things for"? As the chemo went on, He got weaker, day-by-day, until He could no longer get up on a ladder...until He died. I came back home to see how my Mom was doing, suddenly alone, Her Best Friend missing from everything She did every day...to find these tools, parts for things...Frog Tape...around - many things still new, unopened. I picked up the brush, finish the shed in the back, put in the front yard, and now, finish repairing the stairs... With the Frog tape. I never used frog tape before. So, I learned today... from You... I'm going to finish the staircase now; for my Dad. Thank You. (Hard to write this. Cried.)
Using a wet paint brush and brushing the edges of the frog tape is the best method, Caulking is a option but using water to wet the tape is free and most of the time you will be painting 2 coat so the caulk method doesn't make much since unless you tape everything twice.
Deuteronomy 32:4 He is the Rock, his work is perfect: for all his ways are judgment: a God of truth and without iniquity, just and right is he. Awesome verse! I have watched your videos now for painting 3 new personal homes over the years. I greatly appreciate all the advice you've given over the years. Amazing! Thank you.
I've tried many different methods for cutting in, but what works best for me is to go to Hobby Lobby and get a pack of artist brushes for around 8 bucks. There's 4 or 5 different sized brushes in the pack with fine hairs from very small 1/4" to 1". Don't like taking the time to tape, so I'd rather use the very small brushes to do the cut ins. Yeah it takes longer, but you can get a really nice crisp edge. After I finish with whatever project, I throw the used one(s) away instead of trying to clean them.

Nice video man I use a light coat of the base colour. If bleed through its the base colour and it seals the tape for clean lines on fresh paint. Ideal for internals of feature walls.
Going over the area with a near dry roller first, putting a minimal amount of paint on, works for me. It dries really fast, ready for the second coat. It creates really sharp lines. No need for caulk.
Thanks Chris, I am remodeling my home and as far as paint tips, this helped me so much on transition lines. Both interior and exterior. I am replacing all the exterior trim boards with pvc boards and I have lap siding. I am leaving the pvc boards white and I am getting exact transition lines after caulking the voids and using your method.
I find it very beneficial to use a rag to press tape down to get the best seal possible. Taping is an art just like being able to cut in a ceiling line that looks straight. I hear people say all the time that taping is a waste of time and money, and that is absolutely not true. Honestly, it really does depend on what you are doing and what type of paint job you’re trying to accomplish. Taping is tedious and time-consuming, but once you have things taped off properly it is a big timesaver and allows you to turn out very nice finished product for those high-end jobs and clients that are looking for A truly professional paint job. As I said before, not every job requires tape but when the situation is calling for tape it’s the only way to go unless you want an inferior paint job. You mentioned that the brush you are using is a chinex/oil. Not sure what that meant? I use mostly Chinex brushes from Wooster and Corona….. They do a nice job applying the paint and wash out better than any brush I’ve ever used.
Good evening Chris, enjoyed the video. Your tips and tricks are still paying off for me when it comes to painting. I have not had time to watch a lot due to all of the rebuilding going on here in Texas after the flood that hit us AGAIN back in Sept. I am still slinging mud and paint using your pointers which has made a tremendous difference in my work. Thanks and a Happy Thanksgiving to you, your family and team. God Bless you all my friend.
that clear caulking is going to turn yellow eventually . The paint is going to dry long before the caulking dries which means cracking. Looks good when you leave but go back later and see. Also cut your baseboard in after the walls are done. Its not about speed and how much money you make. Its about quality.
I'll have to try this l,.the other way I know to do it. Is paint on the color your going over along the edge first, any bleeding will end up on the right colored surface. Then the tape is sealed for your the other color.
I don’t know, In my opinion a quick dry brush to activate the polymer, not only saves on time and cost, but also eliminates dams and bleeding. Also why would you just paint the tape? Always cut into tape never rely on it, just asking for over-saturation... that frog tape has a limit... plus it’s good force of habit, even if you have “never had an issue”.
I do full new construction millwork packages and i couldnt imagine wearing latex gloves to caulk out a whole house. You seem to have a lot more success with frog tape then we do! Cheers

Can you show the caulking hack at the ceiling when the ceiling is different color than the walls? I think I know how you would do it but it’s easier to understand if you show it. Wondering if you’d tape & caulk the walk or ceiling. Not sure.
I skipped through but if he didn't say it, make sure you use paintable caulking. Nothing worse that caulking something and going to paint and the paint just rolls off the caulk.
Hey bud, great vid, as a painter contractor I am eager to try this new approach. Question, have you ever tested what is like to repaint the surface on a new color (trying to get rid of the line) with the caulking and without? I bet it requires more sanding and prepping with the tape.
Great painting tip. One question I have though is how would you go about doing it if you had to put two coats on? You are removing the tape before the caulk dries on the first coat. Thanks.
I would lightly dust brush the first coat and then do a normal cut in the 2nd time. Make sure not to leave it too saturaded and feather off the tape line well or else paint will peel. It will also peel if you you leave it saturated on only one coat as well.
He clearly said that you mask, then you paint close to what you masked off. Then on your 2nd coat, you caulk your tape then do your cut in and your 2nd coat, peel the tape and you're good.
I’m having trouble finding a silicone free caulking at ace hardware. Which brand and formula of clear caulk do you recommend for sealing the frog tape? Do you have a link for me? Thanks in advance!
Hi Chris, Great videos. I have learned a lot from you. I have a question that you could help me with. When painting trim next to wall paper what is the best way to mask the paper. I am thinking the yellow frog tape and calking, but I don't know and can't find a video you have done on this. Please help. Thanks
I'm trying to talk a coworker into doing this caulking technique on some "sensitive to spray areas" (base against hardwood floors, tile, ect..). Were about to spray a room with baseboard "tight!" Againt the wood floor. And I'm mentioning we should "just clear caulk it, and I'll feel much better about spraying the base, and not having to clean paint off the floor with a 5in1 and a rag 4hr after we spray." But they're not interested and think it looks like S#@% up close, and just cant see it in the video... any tips for me? Haha
If you get your tape tight enough under the board you should have no issues with bleed through. Make sure you press the edge of the tape closest to the millwork really tight. Properly dusted floors is a must as well
I'd be using your intended process, I think it would turn out very well. Many times we try to sneak the tape under the baseboard to cover the spray, does not always work for me, always places the tape won't go under.
@@SendItBilly this depends on so many factors. What is this shade of the old paint vs new paint? What is the size of the space? How large is the project? Am I using regular consumer tape or am I using frog tape? I apologise, I cannot answer your question.

Chris I wanted to ask what you would use to do a 6x6 or 8x8 wood post where it meets the concrete, we use oil base stain simply because we love the look but this is an issue we deal with. Thanks in advance bro
Use the base color, it will bleed through and seal the tape. Boom! Perfect line and you don't have caulk on your wall. I hope that this is the last time anybody plans to paint this wall because it won't be fun removing the unnecessary caulk bump that's on the wall prior to repainting.
Ac Benny Not familiar with Brush he was using. I also like square brushes due to the fact that they generally hold more paint and you can use Brush from both sides, Unlike angle sash brushes which only go One Direction. I’ve been painting for 35 years and it seems like sash brushes are what most painters use for some reason. It really comes down to what you are comfortable with and what works best for you. Have you used any brushes with Chinex bristles? Wooster and Corona make a really nice Chinex brush. This filament that DuPont developed works with Any type of paint or primer and washes out quicker than anything I’ve ever seen.
@@jeffreyhoward3507 yeah buddy I have been painting for 22 years and I haven't crossed paths with any other painters that use sash brushes for anything. The only chinex i have used are the old school Wooster brushes for stain. For oil base paints we used the Corona Yuma. I really like it because it is super soft. I prefer a little more stiffness in my latex brushes. I go with the purdy brushes for anything latex. I've been watching these guys videos for a long time and all i have seen them use are sash tools. Strange 🤷♂️ whatever works I guess.
god damn, Chris. milking the hell out of this little trick, eh? you've gotta have, what--like five or six videos on this already? lol. awesome. it is legitimately a great way to mask so why the hell not ; )

sneaky subliminal message ! but I loved it
Green Frog tape pulled the clear coating off my planked living room floor.
If it is not cured it will
Yeah I ran into this problem with paint on a kitchen wall. It dried over night but just have not been fully cured. It was a nightmare !
Chris I wanted to ask what you would use to do a 6x6 or 8x8 wood post where it meets the concrete, we use oil base stain simply because we love the look but this is an issue we deal with. Thanks in advance bro
Correction: that's NOT "perfectly straight" ... that's "crisp" ...
yes thats Crisp Berry the man
Thank you so much for what you do.
Your welcome thank you for sharing🤙
Hey Chris, so what type of caulk did you use on the very top tape line?
Edgar Torres i work with quick dry 1050 QD by Sherwin williams ... idaho painter use 950A Clear SW
@@ajolote7193 thanks!
How do you caulk windowsills when your repainting the sills & walls if you cant let the caulk dry?
I explained your answer in a video. DM us and we will send you a gift card to our store for using your question
@@Idahopainter In which video did you explain your answer?
Use the base color, it will bleed through and seal the tape. Boom! Perfect line and you don't have caulk on your wall. I hope that this is the last time anybody plans to paint this wall because it won't be fun removing the unnecessary caulk bump that's on the wall prior to repainting.
I've heard using clear latex paint over it, instead of base color, works well too
Yup
Great videos , thank you
Thank you
Thanks
GREAT TIP!
Thank you🤙
Get down homeboy! Big help
Im confused lol why do you do this? Maybe if it was demonstrated at the baseboard or ceiling or door jamb it would make more sense to me
you already covered this
Your awesome!!
I am never satisfied with the poor adhesion of frog tape vs 3m
I can't believe you guys use sash tools for brushing! I do not like those brushes at ALL. Great video!
Ac Benny
Not familiar with Brush he was using.
Reading your t-shirt makes me dizzy 🤓
Clear kaulk, ohh i miss the u.s.a
Im not allowed to use caulk anymore because i am relentlessly making dirty jokes.
I'm from UK and cocking is something you don't want to do or talk about it 😂
Just want to say, after reading comments, i apologise for the things ive said, famous is not easy
Thank you! I appreciate that🤙
I thought its John Cena

90% of you stuff is out of stock ...been out of stock 😞
It's called caulk not caulking...honestly pro tips ?

god damn, Chris. milking the hell out of this little trick, eh? you've gotta have, what--like five or six videos on this already? lol. awesome. it is legitimately a great way to mask so why the hell not ; )
It's called caulk not caulking...honestly pro tips ??? and you don't know what it's called.
Caulking is what you do with caulk. That's the same as calling paint painting.
