Goya and the "Spanish" Haydn | Casals Quartet · MarchVivo

In the internationalization of Joseph Haydn's music, Spain played a relevant role. It was in the 1780s when a brotherhood from Cadiz commissioned one of his most popular works (The Seven Last Words of Christ). At the same time, he was in contact with the Duke of Alba, for whom he supposedly composed two quartets (one is his Op. 42). The Duke's appreciation for Haydn's music is clearly reflected in the portrait he had Goya paint (ca. 1795), posing with a score by the Austrian composer in his hands.
