      I used to work for a printing company that handled all of the Ayn Rand Institute (ARI) publications and circulars. Seeing their office manager always walk through the door wearing a pencil skirt, carrying a cigarette case, clutch purse and wearing a large gold dollar sign brooch reminded me that atheists too have cults.

    As someone just starting, this is helpful, but also overwhelming! This is part of why I am attracted to a hedge path… but… finding community to know where to start, books to trust, practical advice on starting a calendar of rites, how to construct rites, etc. is all quite overwhelming knowing that this is an issue. Because you are not sure who to trust and there is so much information out there. I already noticed a lot of red flags in places like Reddit when googling for things. Small red flags… I am not accusing any one of anything, just things that make me feel I have to be on my toes.

    I think good religious leaders for ourself need to also be experienced in the religion and be older. I think those who are to young are more likely to make poor choices or care to much about the wrong things. They also need to be experienced in the religion in question. It's hard to be a good religious leader if you are learning yourself what it means to be apart of that religion. A leader should feel like a natural choice for the community because they should be someone who helps the community greatly and is respected by the members of said community.

    I'm going to be 100% honest. The Polytheist community needs to get offline. Discord is no replacement for actual community and many of the problems in the Polytheist community would be solved if we actually put our focus into IRL communities with the intention of building lasting traditions to pass on to our children. We need our own neighborhoods. Our own towns even. We need to stop letting the internet take all of our energy and we need to actually put that energy to good use. Discord drama is chicanery of the highest degree and we don't need it

    • @Sparkbomber
      @Sparkbomber Год назад +1

      @wildmen5025 Unfortunately, I've got to disagree.
      Thing is, drama will happen regardless of whether it's on- or offline. Humans, eh? Discord, while not perfect by any means, is a lifeline for many pagans, heathens and atheists living under brutal (oft abrahamic) oppression. Seen more than a few of them who would have died without the support from their online community(/ies).
      Additionally, there's the very real danger associated with irl communities exclusively for one or the other religious group. Jim Jones' spirit is alive and kicking in too many offline groups. =_= Code words, mandatory tattoos to show loyalty, etc. etc. etc.. Might be what you expect for all I know, I'm not a mindreader, but don't drink the Flavoraide there.
      So instead I'd recommend focussing on creating safe online communities and improving both freedom of and from religion (can't have one w/o the other) in your offline slice of the world. Keep things open and in full view so people can see the usual lies are proven false. (AKA: no babies sacrificed, people eaten or Cthulhu p+rn involved)
      It'll help build tolerance, acceptance and compassion so that one day pagans may have their own temples, shrines and murals in public spaces. Mandatory caveat that I'm an especially 'orrible atheist©, but even so I'd rather see that the good beans in pagan faiths can flourish. On that note... Do be mindful of suitcase jeebus. Atheists get the same lies spewed about them as pagans do, we don't drink blood for instance, and you may find a few good beans to add to your friends. If not your religion persé.
      We are stronger together. That is a fact.

    • @WildMen4444
      @WildMen4444 Год назад +3

      @@Sparkbomber I'm going to disagree. Having a real life community is worth the risk. Our religions were meant to be lived offline. We're only stronger together if we are actually together and developing communities with actual impact on the world around us. Every other religion has IRL communities and they're all so much healthier than we are. We need our own schools, our own hospitals, our own interest groups, and our own politicians fighting for our values. If that sounds scary to you, do be mindful of the fact that we Polytheists support the arts and sciences, democracy, personal liberties, and the environment. A Polytheist Moral Majority would actually do wonders. Also, you say that the online community has helped people in their time of need. Have you considered that if they had an IRL community they wouldn't have even needed to ask? They would have already been provided for. They'd be safe in the arms of their own kind. They'd rest easy knowing that they'd be cared for and nourished spiritually by their own kind. Polytheists are stronger together with other Polytheists

    • @djbean333
      @djbean333 Год назад

      I have to agree with @wildmen5025 we need to stop being so comfortable with our Screens and actually meet up in person celebrating the Gods together, there is no growth without this but I disagree forming community so close to each other we can all live on one Street this is unnecessary and I believe an overreaction to the overreaction of not wanting to create a real life community in the first place. But allowing our insecurities whatever they may be hold us back from meeting on one another in person is the greatest betrayal to the Gods

    • @WildMen4444
      @WildMen4444 Год назад +1

      @@djbean333 A very common problem I hear is that people feel that the rest of society is pulling them away from really deepening their engagement with the Gods. I don't know about everyone else but I just think it'd be nice if there were places where you could live as a Polytheist openly and not only have this be accepted but encouraged. Where it's all just a part of the life and culture. Where little kids don't have to be afraid of strangers trying to convince them that mommy and daddy are going to Hell for being Polytheist and so will they if they don't follow Jesus. I want our children to grow up passionate about our Gods and ready to take us to heights we could have never dreamed of. I want our sick and elderly to know that they will be cared for in spiritually clean places of medicine where not only will they receive the best of modern care but traditional medicine is also approved of and accepted and the Gods are a part of the process every step of the way. I want it to be impossible to not be able to find a shrine where one could go pray and make offerings alongside their fellow Polytheists. I want a place where there's always some festival being celebrated and you always know that good food, music, dance, and camaraderie are always to be found. A place where there is no longer anger, fear, or loneliness. Where we no longer have to explain or justify ourselves. Where safety, peace, and love reign. Perhaps the difficulty in bringing this to fruition is off-putting but it's a dream worth suffering for.

    • @djbean333
      @djbean333 Год назад

      @@WildMen4444 I hear your words and in the realm of them we are kindred spirits. Although I disagree in the struggle us polyeists face to but a bad thing because, no tribe nation or religion survives for a millennia without adversity and a struggle. But I digress, whether it's just me working towards a way for us to congregate and celebrate the gods or many, my first ambiton of many is to run a religious festival once a year and in time have it recognised by UK Parliament & US government so we can have access to natural herbs unique to our faith, just as the modern day Native Americans achieved getting the US government permission to celebrating there faith with traditional psychedelic cactus plants. Plans are in Motion and the day you speak of will be happening sooner than you think. And if you can't wait for that day why not use my idea to jump start your own. You have my mortal blessing, and there's no doubt in my mind the gods give you theirs as well.
