A victory pie dispenser, I love it! That thing is quite seriously the best off-road rig I have ever seen bar none and the fact it was built entirely from scratch with chalk lines on the floor makes it even more impressive.
Kenner was wondering when you would find the nice little bonus he made for you. Hope it makes the victories that much sweeter. If you get tired of the fuel gauge let me know 😂😂😉
@@JohnFL It honestly wasn't on purpose. The gauge and the sender aren't compatible, I hope Speed-Hut makes their gauges programmable to make it all work the way it should. Edit: just looked and the gauge is programmable to the sender that is installed in the tank.
Hearing Jamie fawn over how nice the wrecker glides over rough terrain is SO satisfying - given that YOU GUYS designed it and built it. In contrast to the thousands of engineers working over a century on production models.
That was my 1st thought too... That Chad deliberately wired the gas gauge backward. It's SOP for Matt, to not know how much gas is in any of his vehicles.
@@09dave1952 Well in their videos they were looking for something fun to do with the low fuel indication but didn't find anything to do in time for delivery. So yeah Chad reverse wiring it wouldn't surprise me.
I've thought of the wheel lift idea to. If you had a short boom wheel lift that was hinged, maybe sat on a airbag with a roller in the middle under it, it would carry the front or rear of a vehicle off the ground. If the wrecker went up a steep incline the roller rests on the ground while the boom rides up. Downhill and flat ground it rides on the air bags under the boom on the wrecker frame. Air bags or the boom winch to lift the towed vehicle off the ground. Or do old school short wheeled log arch type deal that would mimic a tow dilly with matching 46" tires and load the towed vehicle front or rear wheels into it. Just my 2 sense. Keep up the good work guys and gals!
Would like to see an episode where Rory gets to operate the off-road wrecker, just to give some suggestions and opinions on it. Obviously it's not Trail Mater, but some insight from Rory on how he runs that rig might spark some good ideas on the off-road wrecker.
The wrecker is a beast. It made that recovery look like a piece of cake. Way better and easier than the XJ train up that hill. And, it does the recoveries with style. Congrats on an awesome build.
Matt made a marvel from scratch in his building of the biggest off road wrecker. This recovery vehicle is loved by all that drive it! Jaymie love's this wrecker and driving it is so easy and just float's right on over the rough trails leaving the Banana and Morrvair behind. It's something for Matt and his team to be very proud of.

2 thoughts as I watch, things to try... 1) Some sort of steel bar or tube with a winch line through it. Would allow you to pull the towed vehicle in tight (compression member) for control or let line pay out if needed to clear an obstacle. It could be triangulated and articulate to control left right movement. 2) I've used this to recover broken UTV before, with much less capable equipment, where I use winch line to compress front suspension some and chain in place before lifting to get that extra bit of clearance.
When strapping the vehicle in tow to the wrecker, put a choke on the axle, you used the strap as a sling, a choke will bite the axle preventing it from slipping and possibly be long enough w/o the extra strap to reach the tow clamp
Boom needs to be about 20 inches longer at least. All clearances would be better. Fun problem to solve imo! I am confident Matt will figure out the best system as time goes on!
Triangle hitch. 2 mounts on the wrecker and 1 to the tow vehicle. Telescoping shafts with a shock mount in the center. Heim joints on all 3 points. It may take some engineering but you have one on your team.

Love your videos. After a career in the US Coast Guard, I am in the habit of refueling the boats after every mission. That transferred over to me driving the fire trucks as a volunteer. Keep them full and you never have to worry. But, it always does add some drama to your videos :).
I can skip that kind of drama. I have never run out of gas in my life. Thank God. I helped so many with that issue, so know the cost and I can't stand putting others through that cost. I don't have a working gauge in my truck, but the milage works well and the warning light still functions.
In my first car, a 65 VW, I had a problem of fuel delivery. My dad said I was always running it out of gas (only being able to afford a quarter tank). Turns out it was sludge that plugged up the screen at the bottom of the tank at low fuel levels. Flushed out the tank, coated in POR15 and that problem went away.
I have to say that I admire you for keeping a level head when experiencing problems as you rescue people. The heavy wrecker is really cool and there is a lot more to be done with it, but thanks for not giving up when a mistake is made (like bending hoods) with the heavy wrecker. That ability is very inspiring.
it's really great how great the heavy wrecker is making light work of this recovery...it's great to see your wife behind the wheel driving and good to see lizzy too, tom and your other worker sorry i forgot his name...but good to see workers helping in the recovery...great job with the wrecker....keep making great videos 📹 👍 😀
Chad's wife will like you loving the "sweet victory" pie. IF I remember right, it was her idea. Liking how THORR (The Heavy Off Road Recker) ate up that hill!
I guess this is part of Matt's nature, and part of the foundation of his succes. If all teachers in the world had some of these attributes, the world would be a better place. Mike Patey,. Eric O.,... There are a few out there (in YT) doing their own thing, but building on the same principles.
"What should we do??" Call Rory!! haha That was your smoothest wrecker recovery yet. One hell of a machine should be fun watching you guys dial it in and master it.
Nice recovery!! You'll have to keep a close eye on Jamie... she is getting a gleam in her eye when she drives the wrecker. She might want to keep it for herself! LOL!! Chad is one heck of a man. He just thinks of everything... even the victory pie!! LOL!!
I think a tow bar would be a huge improvement in all but those extreme cases you mentioned. At those times it could be detached. But knowing the tow vehicle won't rear end you I feel like would be great.
I have been mentioning this since the wrecker build began... Matt needs to talk to Eric at BSF Recovery. Eric uses a typical wrecker sling for 90% of his recoveries. There is definitely a learning curve to using a sling on extreme terrain but it can be done and it is worth learning and using. The wrecker boom would have also benefitted from an extendable boom to give space between vehicles with better angles.
It is so much fun watching the big wrecker work. I hope you share the upgrades you have for it. Jamie has such a good attitude about helping out even when she is not dressed for it.
We couldn't fully understand just HOW large, powerful, well-designed, outfitted and capable the narrow Heavy Wrecker was going to be when we saw the video of you guys cutting out and welding up Tom Tom's frame design waaay back when. And we now realize it hasn't even reached it's potential yet. Cool. *(Narrow-Off-Road-Design Heavy Recovery Wrecker Jamie Approved.)
That was amazing pulling up the hill. How tall was that rock Jamie drove the passanger rear over? Looked to be at least 4' if not 5'. Amazing what it just walks over. Very nice MORR crew. Have a great weekend!
Like all other recoveries, Matt’s team always recover customer rig cleanly. Just like in the wrecker game, Matt careful handling towing and recovery are world class. If my RudToy stuck in one of Utah National parks, I’d trust Matt for the toughest recovery
Idk why but i do miss watching you guys fuel up at mavericks and watching you guys drive to out to the customer. I’m not from utah so seeing all that out there is awesome. Plus it almost makes me feel like I’m ridding along lol
I don't run a towing company and the most off road vehicle I have is a 4-wheeler that plows snow from my driveway. But thanks to Matt and his awesome crew I think have heavy wrecker envy.
Victory pie!!!!!! hahahahahahaaaa! gotta love that. also, gotta love the fact that Lizzy has "The World's Only OffRoad Recovery Team Private Remote Pick Up Limousine Service" complete with Dad-in-a-necktie driver. (geez. talk about special, now 'that' is special!) Matt, Jamie, and all the rest, i love this channel, it just keeps getting betterer and betterer. YEE-HAAAAA!😁
Wanted to thank you for the efforts you are making to keep the channel fresh. Your efforts are extremely appreciated, all your hard work and care poured into these presentations are noticeable! Job well done. Your offer of a little corner of the world which is mostly safe from insanity goes a looooong way.
Before you lift up the towed vehicle you could strap down the front axle to the frame (keep suspension compressed) and avoid having to lift too high or bumping the tires on the ground frequently. Probably works on rear axles as well if you’re towing backwards. Use your Matt straps! Anyway, love what you do, greets from Germany!
Next project: World's Biggest Rollback (you already have the axles). You'll not have to worry about the 8 foot hard bar. Getting the center of gravity low enough to be safe will be a fun design challenge.
That was a lovely addition Chad and his boys created for you Matt, A dual victory pie holder. I know you have to find your own way with the wrecker and for sure you will, Rory has tried the solid connection to the vehicle being towed and said it is fine on the road but a big dangerous no no for off road. I'm just talking between friends so as to speak. That was a nice recovery and it’s good to see the wrecker doing so well. Keep safe and I look forward to your next one.
SUGGESTION: if you install cheap aftermarket back view camera on the lower part of the boom(or somewhere where you can see the front of the tow car), then you would not need to overthink how high to lift the tow car, you could just go with whatever height, and then actively adjust and lower it on the big drops(so it does not overturn, or lif it up, if front wheels interfering in a bad way on steps up). But it would always give you perfect feedback on where you want to be as you go.
That’s why Matt didn’t make the wrecker a crew cab. He can look out the back window and see that. Just needs more practice doing everything thing at the same time. You’re trying to keep track of 8 tires, 3 steering axles, 3 winch controls, communicating with the other driver. It’s a lot of stuff that he needs to get used to.
@@warrenmichael918 Soon he will develop a muscle memory for all the controls, and then extra set of eyes directly down and under towing vehicle becomes a no brainer. Nobody complains about cameras in everyday vehicles, here its even more critical/handy when passing extreme steps.
💯 I hope everybody in this comments section understands I really don't know🤣🤣🤣 but hey I'm trying to put two and two together and get four🤪 no disrespect Lizzy
The entire 'rescue' and explainations for all the steps was great. What 'takes the cake' though,is the 'pie-box' .It even has an extra for the co-driver. :)
Would it make sense to give Lizzy the remotes for the boom? You still have switches in the cab and that way both of you could make adjustments whenever either of you see a problem coming.
That could be risky. The person in the broken vehicle doesn't see anything in front, so the pitch could change very quickly without warning. Also the wrecker driver needs to know the winch setup the whole time, so the two drivers would need to communicate pretty well.
I loved watching the comparison to the two XJ's. I saw that episode and it was fun watching you struggle a bit getting up the hill, but watching The Heavy Wrecker walk up that hill was awesome.
Matt, there are several reasons that I like your channel: 1) I love Utah's scenery and the back country trips; 2) Your whole family and extended family are always having fun and working together; 3) You embrace your community and are generous; 4) You are creative (example: the wrecker); 5) And you maintain a sense of humility (perhaps, even after this post)!
Excellent episode! I feel bad for being so critical the other day. I really enjoy every video. Thank you, for all of your hard work to bring all of us along for the ride!
For your X attachment maybe you could put some eyes on the frame in the back and use the side winches for adjustable length straps. Did this once with my winch when I broke a transfer case mount off the frame. Ran the line down the frame over some stuff and around the mount then tightened the winch.
Your videos are always such good fun to watch! Through the magic of editing it usually looks so easy but then, if you love what you do you'll never work a day in your life. Great job everyone!
I've been working on required tank levels for various fluids; hydraulic oil, diesel, gassoling, even water. Keep it simple, get a "SIGHT GLASS" they are ubiquitous. They are fail safe. Get some sight gages on your rigs, Matt. Cheers and best of luck.
Im sure this has been mentioned, but a longer boom would surely help. Maybe use the existing lower frame, and add an adjustable center boom with lock pins
Sean Digaetano. I agree. I've always thought the boom was far too short, also the cross straps arent going to stop the towed vehicle from hitting the wrecker, i'm sure when Matt was doing the off road games he was using an A frame for towing, i think that's all it needs, it may need modifying of course.
At least he seems to knows wich direction a fuel gauge should normally go... Who would have thought 😉
And if it's switched, going the opposite way - at least when it's 1/2 full then you know it's 1/2 full!

@@azmax623 Keeping it between 3/4 and full is still only 1/4 tank at a time.😉🤨
I have to say that I admire you for keeping a level head when experiencing problems as you rescue people.
I like how he includes everyone now and spreads the trust out to everyone.. I dig it.
Agree
That's because he's a useless twat, even towtrucker and heavy d said that, not in so many words
I dig the way Jamie drives and her boobs bounce.
I guess this is part of Matt's nature, and part of the foundation of his succes. If all teachers in the world had some of these attributes, the world would be a better place. Mike Patey,. Eric O.,... There are a few out there (in YT) doing their own thing, but building on the same principles.
Matt you’re Lizzy’s RUclips dad, and we appreciate/love that you treat everyone around you as family. 👍🏾👍🏾👍🏾👍🏾
"What should we do??" Call Rory!! haha
That was your smoothest wrecker recovery yet.
Rory Irish from Trail Mater doesn't agree. He tried many variations but finally settled on the crossed straps.
@Percy Faith Most of his recoveries are in extreme conditions like moab with big drops and climbs. Most of matts aren't like that.
^This is not Matt, this is a bot
If my RudToy stuck in one of Utah National parks, I’d trust Matt for the toughest recovery
yay! I've missed having Lizzy in the videos. We need more of Ed too please!
From chalk marks on the shop floor to pulling jeeps over the river and through the woods. Thanks for sharing.
Good to see Jamie on so many recoveries.
Victory pie!!!!!! hahahahahahaaaa! gotta love that. also, gotta love the fact that Lizzy has
"The World's Only OffRoad Recovery Team Private Remote Pick Up Limousine Service"
complete with Dad-in-a-necktie driver. (geez. talk about special, now 'that' is special!)
Matt, Jamie, and all the rest, i love this channel, it just keeps getting betterer and betterer.
YEE-HAAAAA!😁
I think it's awesome how you always let others drive. I can tell you want to share the awesome experience with everyone.. that's cool..
Wanted to thank you for the efforts you are making to keep the channel fresh. Your efforts are extremely appreciated, all your hard work and care poured into these presentations are noticeable! Job well done. Your offer of a little corner of the world which is mostly safe from insanity goes a looooong way.
Jaime is pretty damn cool to have her CDL and want to be part of all this!
I assume she has her CDL with air brake endorsement. Think I heard Air Brakes on the Rollback.
Great to see Lizzy again. Jamie us always a treat to watch. And the doggos too!
I can't be the ONLY one who thinks Matt and Jamie are so cute together 😍💚
Next project: World's Biggest Rollback (you already have the axles). You'll not have to worry about the 8 foot hard bar. Getting the center of gravity low enough to be safe will be a fun design challenge.
Good MORRning everyone!
After the pie goodbye
That was a lovely addition Chad and his boys created for you Matt, A dual victory pie holder. I know you have to find your own way with the wrecker and for sure you will, Rory has tried the solid connection to the vehicle being towed and said it is fine on the road but a big dangerous no no for off road. I'm just talking between friends so as to speak. That was a nice recovery and it’s good to see the wrecker doing so well. Keep safe and I look forward to your next one.
I love seeing miss Jamie just drive whatever is thrown at her
12:40 Peanut having a blast watching the left flank 😂
That would just make another item to have to watch and keep track of. Always watching the camera would take his eyes off more important stuff.
Or a sick one with a big screen and birds eye view. There are some really trick systems for RVs and even a handful for cars.
@@warrenmichael918 Soon he will develop a muscle memory for all the controls, and then extra set of eyes directly down and under towing vehicle becomes a no brainer. Nobody complains about cameras in everyday vehicles, here its even more critical/handy when passing extreme steps.
@@aaronb7990 angle from high up, would not show as good as from down low(main thing is how hiigh/low front wheels in relation to obsticle)
The look on your face with the warm pie box is priceless !!!
Glad to see the wrecker again. I watched the work that was done.
Nice to see Mrs. Ballard on the recovery! She has gotten so comfortable and confident in front of the camera.
who is Mrs Ballard? Lizzy???
It's great to see Lizzy's confidence grow over time.👍
💯🤔 you know she's pregnant. The doctor's appointments with an obstetrician😮. So I was led to believe
@@archieletsyouknow5508 😱
@@mauriciopena2099 💯🤔 that usually comes with the new husband. But keep it on the down low👍🏼
💯 I hope everybody in this comments section understands I really don't know🤣🤣🤣 but hey I'm trying to put two and two together and get four🤪 no disrespect Lizzy
@@archieletsyouknow5508 Unless you are her husband, that is not your story to tell.
Wow that's a great idea.
GOOOOOOOD MORRning everybody and thumbs UP to Matt and crew! 👍👁👁
Good to hear that everyone in YT land knows how this off-road recovery stuff should be done. Otherwise Matt would have to call Rory for everything! 🤣🤣
Fantastic that Jamie enjoys working with Matt and the crew. Love your videos!
Jamie is such a pleasant person. Thanks for the video!
Agree
Highly agree.
I agree with u there
"Love what you do" is the key. Some people won't love anything. But God will help, just ask.
I've been working on required tank levels for various fluids; hydraulic oil, diesel, gassoling, even water. Keep it simple, get a "SIGHT GLASS" they are ubiquitous. They are fail safe. Get some sight gages on your rigs, Matt. Cheers and best of luck.
This is like watching a gang of friends having fun, and finding someone needing help on the way.
The wrecker is totally awesome...Great recovery...Jaime is getting the hang of recovery...
Chad mentioned that Matt was going to extend the boom about 8”
I remember watching the first video where you were building the frame, it is so amazing how that frame has turned into this wrecker.
Jamie is just adding class to the recovery!
The wrecker continues to impress, good to see you're getting the hitching sorted. Thanks guys.
