Ukrainians need to help themselves. They spent $5bil on cigarettes in 2023. They had since 2016 to prepare. At the rate the buy cigarettes under an invasion, they wasted more than enough wealth and time to defend themselves. $5 billion would have bought a lot of drones but Ukrainians spent it on lung cancer.
Another interview so rich in content that it will take time to digest. One reflection (among many): I once read: `` intelligent people talk about ideas, less intelligent ones about events, the least intelligent about people ``. It appears that the very important ideas surrounding what is happening in Ukraine, and the epic events going on there, are currently less able to hold the attention of much of the Western public than the murder of one famous person. That is the reality we are dealing with, and it does sometime make me fear for our democracies. May the rest of us learn from Ukraine about what is important, and learn it soon.

Yet so downhearted - and frustrated - do I feel, I cant sit through an hour and a bit of hearing not so much what I already know - but what I would have thought EVERYONE should know, most particularly of course, our politicians. I was reading the Comments written by listeners of an interview Kate Chabo did on Times Radio with General Barron (which, by the way, for the same reasons, I couldn't listen to either) and someone had critiqued the general's assertion that the military force that Russia can generate from £2.3 trillion GDP, is a lot less than what the Euro countries, including UK, could muster considering the combined GDP of £30 trillion - the criticism was along the lines of while that was undoubtedly theoretically true, if Russia was much more determined and committed such that it a) allocated much bigger proportion of its GDP to the military and b) was focussed on ramping up existing munitions making capability and building new capability - it could still outrun a loose coalition with on paper much more money, but less weaponry generating infrastructure - and anyway, which was much more miserly with what it was prepared to spend on matériel. All of this now just feels horribly passé. I really hope we're not all sitting around discussing this sagaciously, while Russia ruthlessly gets on with arming itself. Which will only create additional problems for us all in the future which we CAN'T be so lackadaisical about.....🫤
That's one of the problems with democracies. Every move has to be approved by parliament and after long debates, things tend to get done only half-heartedly or not at all. Also the only people who get to the top are the ones who are so committed to their own careers that they just say what they have to to hold onto their positions. Whilst the hard work is left to those at the base of the pyramid.

This interview is so uplifting though - its wonderful to hear. It does present a challenge for ordinary people going forward, how to become as democratic and free as Ukrainians want to be. The disaffection with our elites is an Achilles heel Russia can exploit. Unfettered greed needs addressing, it helps drive war and global overheating.

I am so disappointed by Tucker, by Laura Ingraham, by Tim Pool, by Matt Gaetz, and so many otherwise decent people, for their myopic views on the war in Ukraine. I am disgusted by all those who view Putin as "wise and reasonable" man who is merely defending Russian-speaking citizens of Ukraine. I am a Russian-speaking Ukrainian. Muscovy started 200+ years after Kyiv. Muscovy developed as an autocracy, an extreme one from way back, and it has remained as such, vividly transparent as never before these days. What a bunch of crap, Kiev was a vassal state of Lithuania and later the Polish Lithuanian Commonwealth in the era you are talking about and there was no democracy. In the 17th century Ukraine staged a revolt an asked Moscow to take them in and Ukraine pledged allegiance to the emperor of Russia and became part of the Russian Empire. There is no question that there have been intentional delays with excuses delayed the arrival of F16s and continue to do so. Pilots began passing their training many months ago, but then more nonsensical delays. Similar to US reaction to Ukraine's 2022 request for 500 tanks for their 2023 offensive. The US has thousands of reserve Abrams tanks being held in reserve in addition to the 1,500 or so in daily use. So how did we respond? We gave them 33 so their counteroffensive would go no where. I honestly believe Biden's administration is scared of Russia being defeated or broken up. The whys of that are probably both complex and many.

Ukraine is actually really diverse. Sure, there are a lot of Ukrainians that want to westernize the country, but there are also a lot of Ukrainians that want Russia to remain their big brother.
Problem is, Russia has almost 150 million people and the draft age has been raised to 30, meaning theoretically, over a million more servicemen can be mobilized. The west needs to continue to support Ukraine as Putin's strategy in part, appears to be to overwhelm Ukraine with massed but low quality infantry and artillery, WW2 style.
Maybe the west wants them all to be mobilized so that Ukraine can take care of them. Ukraine is doing the world a huge favor by making the world safer. Another mass mobilization and the majority of them will likely leave Russia. There will be fighting at the border, and revolte on the front lines.

Why are the arms manufacturers not stepping up ? I just read that the US is #1 arms exporter and lately the UK has been #2 - a lot to Saudi Arabia, despite their bombarding of Yemen.. Otherwise #2 are France and Russia. So they have plenty available to sell, it seems. Why not make more or divert those to help in Ukraine?

I really loved this video, thanks so much for your work! It was fascinating that you both touched the topic that the Maidan feels like a threat to some EU countries; I could not agree more! And it is simple: EU democracies are deep down afraid of a functioning civil society. And imagine: Ukraine has an inspiring population with a ton of innovative spirit, they are dynamic, I heard Ukraine was referred to as the Silicon Valley of the East in RuZzia's old days, and the country has a bunch of natural resources. To be leader of a civil society that is not even afraid of RuZzia would make a lot of Macrons and Scholzes sweat, because they could not democratically talk them into something they just do not want.
Excellent discussion. I especially liked the description of Ukranians during the Maiden as confident and instrumental in their revolt and ridding themselves of corrupt government. Much more needs to be made of this right now. Those who have not followed the Ukranian struggle apparently don't appreciate the what it took to get rid of the government'a connection to Miscow and how difficult it was to get rid of their former president and then his lackeys.
I have seen (on RUclips) the video Winter on Fire, which is a gripping documentary about the protests and the cost paid in lives in Maidan 2014, after their President was 'nobbled' by Putin into betraying his election promise to turn towards the EU and away from Russia. There are other videos too.

Love the content, keep up the good work. Slava Ukraini. Your guests comparison between the truckers blockade/protest in Canada and the Maidan in Ukraine is a bit of a misread. The first was a relatively small group of people (with foreign backing) stretching the definition of non violent protest against a legitimately elected democratic government which had the support of the majority of the population. The majority of Canadians supported some kind of action to end the national embarrassment of a gridlocked Capitol along with some blockaded border crossings. The eventual solution was achieved with minimal violence in a typical Canadian fashion. This was a relief as that result was not guaranteed. No one else came because the pipeline of disgruntled people was empty. The Maidan, to my understanding, started as a protest against a non legitimately elected government and grew because of widespread support by the population. Amazing bravery to stand up against the authorities - they knew what they wanted.
I think I offered no judgement on the merits of the truckers protest in Canada. I encouraged, rather, those who praise the Ottawa truckers to look to Maidan, which was truly a movement of the people. *If* you think the Ottawa truckers were great, how could you not also have respect for Maidan? And yet so many who praise protests in Ottawa and elsewhere, absolutely rag on Maidan. This is what I don't understand. And yes I will keep trying to reach those Americans who say they love freedom but who totally ignore Ukraine.
You make a very good point Jonathan, but you have take in effect that Navalny wanted change in Russia, and the war against Ukraine came after. But changing Russia for the better would / might have prevented the war against Ukraine. It's a very good point though 👍🏼

Essentially, he gave the regime a chance to never again be unprepared for similar future uprisings again. If he was a true opposition leader he wouldn’t have had to follow the path some ru elites prepared for his ‘figure’.
The Canadian military has been cut year after year for decades. It's sad that we barely keep up our NORAD obligations. We're less than 2% GDP, on the NATO spending. It took 10 years to decide on a replacement (F35) for our ancient CF18 fleet. Canada just doesn't have as much old stock to give. They scaped to find combat ready Leopards. I know that most of what Canada has been sending is new. For example the 800 Sky Ranger drones just announced or the Senator APCs. However, I don't think we are that far down the list when you include financial aid. Support for Ukraine is not a partisan issue in Canada, any aid is widely supported. The government could do pretty much anything for Ukraine without major push back politically. I know that upping military spending to 2% GDP will be a voting issue for me personally next election. 💙💛
The lingering "peace dividend" - since the end of WW2 and the cooling of the Cold War, and no doubt our proximity to the US - the world's largest military and our relative geographic isolation from hotspots has all contributed to our complacency and anemic procurement. But one of our strengths continues to be in military training and capacity building, as seen in Ukraine's 2023 request for renewal into 2025 of Canada's Operation UNIFIER (started in 2015) - now operating in Poland and the UK since russia invaded Ukraine in 2022.
Those in Poland against Ukrainian grain are probably a small noisy coterie causing trouble, similarly the separatists in Ukraine were a relatively small group making noises, making people think that everyone was for them. That is how pressure groups go for publicity, duping us ordinary lay bunnies with dodgy extreme hysteria and lies. Something similar happened in 2014 at the Maidan in Kyiv, a small pack of dodgy zealots trying to dupe the general populace. As far as the above separatists go, they are the kids, grandkids of Russians resettled in Ukrainian vacated abodes after their original occupants were forcibly sent to Siberian gulags, 80, 90 years previously. Crafty Muscovy politics in 2014 in Kyiv by the descendants of those resettled Russians, creating a division in Ukraine. Those separatists were/are a relatively small group. The bolshies in Russia in the 20th century were a relatively small group, but into extreme activity, terrorising others.

And they not just do not know, they mock every attempt to explain this bias. I see this bias for a decade. This is frustrating. Please listen to Joseph. Try to understand his argumentation. Even if you disagree now, you will start to see this as a repeated pattern.
I disagree with that notion, because "the West" isn't a monolithic block. There are people who know what's right and wrong in that context, know Russia and Ukraine.

I agree with your guest. I believe that doing the right thing is always the best course of action. Either Russia is in the wrong, or it is in the right. Either supporting Ukraine benefits us, or it does not. If we believe that Ukraine is in the right and they are fighting for our freedom then we MUST give them what they need to WIN. Nothing else matters. In competitive sport we have a saying: Go BIG or go home. While I give Biden credit for sending the aid that he has sent, he has failed to tell us the truth, that we must do whatever it takes to WIN. If he just had the courage and strength of character to say that, the people of the US would rally behind him and the Ukrainians would quickly defeat the Muscovites on the battlefield and end the war.

The cause of the war is simple Ukraine after the fall of the USSR Russia allowed Ukraine to be an independent country if they remain a neutral country. They violated this pledge and applied to join NATO. Also Ukraine has killed 14,000 of their own citizens in Eastern Ukraine in the last 10 years of shelling the region and they asked Russia to come in and save them. This video does not tell you about Ukraine killing of their citizens.

We can moan about our leaders as much as we like and we do have a chance to influence them if we will only take some trouble. We've just had it too easy for too long and have come to believe that we are entitled to peace, without having to fight and pay for it. Now, cold reality is knocking at the door.
A previous guest explained how the kgb filled all administrative positions (including the church). Small wonder our information is being manipulated.
I keep writing to my beloved CBC website, asking them if they are biased when they fail to report on Ukraine’s successes. I seem to be getting results. As individuals, we need to stir up the pot, as they did in the Maidan.

Muscovy started 200+ years after Kyiv. Muscovy developed as an autocracy, an extreme one from way back, and it has remained as such, vividly transparent as never before these days. Ukraine developed more so as a democracy, albeit harassed by Russia and others, the others now being for Ukraine mostly. Putin trying to discredit Ukraine, is a liar and an ignoramus.

What a bunch of crap, Kiev was a vassal state of Lithuania and later the Polish Lithuanian Commonwealth in the era you are talking about and there was no democracy. In the 17th century Ukraine staged a revolt an asked Moscow to take them in and Ukraine pledged allegiance to the emperor of Russia and became part of the Russian Empire. The Polish movie "With fire and sword" tells this whole story.

There is no question that there have been intentional delays with excuses delayed the arrival of F16s and continue to do so. Pilots began passing their training many months ago, but then more nonsensical delays. Similar to US reaction to Ukraine's 2022 request for 500 tanks for their 2023 offensive. The US has thousands of reserve Abrams tanks being held in reserve in addition to the 1,500 or so in daily use. So how did we respond? We gave them 33 so their counteroffensive would go no where. I honestly believe Biden's administration is scared of Russia being defeated or broken up. The whys of that are probably both complex and many.
Yes, this interview points at some of "our" (Western) divisions, we're not all on the same page about Maidan because it might undermine those currently in power, yet it need not. Democracy needs embracing and perhaps re-learning here in the West, without care, it could be lost

Ukraine is actually really diverse. Sure, there are a lot of Ukrainians that want to westernize the country, but there are also a lot of Ukrainians that want Russia to remain their big brother.
Problem is, Russia has almost 150 million people and the draft age has been raised to 30, meaning theoretically, over a million more servicemen can be mobilized.
The west needs to continue to support Ukraine as Putin's strategy in part, appears to be to overwhelm Ukraine with massed but low quality infantry and artillery, WW2 style.
Maybe the west wants them all to be mobilized so that Ukraine can take care of them. Ukraine is doing the world a huge favor by making the world safer. Another mass mobilization and the majority of them will likely leave Russia. There will be fighting at the border, and revolte on the front lines.

Why are the arms manufacturers not stepping up ? I just read that the US is #1 arms exporter and lately the UK has been #2 - a lot to Saudi Arabia, despite their bombarding of Yemen.. Otherwise #2 are France and Russia. So they have plenty available to sell, it seems. Why not make more or divert those to help in Ukraine?

I really loved this video, thanks so much for your work! It was fascinating that you both touched the topic that the Maidan feels like a threat to some EU countries; I could not agree more! And it is simple: EU democracies are deep down afraid of a functioning civil society. And imagine: Ukraine has an inspiring population with a ton of innovative spirit, they are dynamic, I heard Ukraine was referred to as the Silicon Valley of the East in RuZzia's old days, and the country has a bunch of natural resources. To be leader of a civil society that is not even afraid of RuZzia would make a lot of Macrons and Scholzes sweat, because they could not democratically talk them into something they just do not want.
Excellent discussion. I especially liked the description of Ukranians during the Maiden as confident and instrumental in their revolt and ridding themselves of corrupt government. Much more needs to be made of this right now. Those who have not followed the Ukranian struggle apparently don't appreciate the what it took to get rid of the government'a connection to Miscow and how difficult it was to get rid of their former president and then his lackeys.
I have seen (on RUclips) the video Winter on Fire, which is a gripping documentary about the protests and the cost paid in lives in Maidan 2014, after their President was 'nobbled' by Putin into betraying his election promise to turn towards the EU and away from Russia. There are other videos too.

Your guests comparison between the truckers blockade/protest in Canada and the Maidan in Ukraine is a bit of a misread. The first was a relatively small group of people (with foreign backing) stretching the definition of non violent protest against a legitimately elected democratic government which had the support of the majority of the population. The majority of Canadians supported some kind of action to end the national embarrassment of a gridlocked Capitol along with some blockaded border crossings. The eventual solution was achieved with minimal violence in a typical Canadian fashion. This was a relief as that result was not guaranteed. No one else came because the pipeline of disgruntled people was empty.
The Maidan, to my understanding, started as a protest against a non legitimately elected government and grew because of widespread support by the population. Amazing bravery to stand up against the authorities - they knew what they wanted.
I think I offered no judgement on the merits of the truckers protest in Canada. I encouraged, rather, those who praise the Ottawa truckers to look to Maidan, which was truly a movement of the people. *If* you think the Ottawa truckers were great, how could you not also have respect for Maidan? And yet so many who praise protests in Ottawa and elsewhere, absolutely rag on Maidan. This is what I don't understand. And yes I will keep trying to reach those Americans who say they love freedom but who totally ignore Ukraine.

You make a very good point Jonathan, but you have take in effect that Navalny wanted change in Russia, and the war against Ukraine came after.

@@SiliconCurtainwell, it was navalny who sent the protesters home. They didn’t capture the moment and let it all go into nothing. Essentially, he gave the regime a chance to never again be unprepared for similar future uprisings again. If he was a true opposition leader he wouldn’t have had to follow the path some ru elites prepared for his ‘figure’.

The Canadian military has been cut year after year for decades. It's sad that we barely keep up our NORAD obligations. We're less than 2% GDP, on the NATO spending. It took 10 years to decide on a replacement (F35) for our ancient CF18 fleet. Canada just doesn't have as much old stock to give. They scaped to find combat ready Leopards. I know that most of what Canada has been sending is new. For example the 800 Sky Ranger drones just announced or the Senator APCs. However, I don't think we are that far down the list when you include financial aid. Support for Ukraine is not a partisan issue in Canada, any aid is widely supported. The government could do pretty much anything for Ukraine without major push back politically. I know that upping military spending to 2% GDP will be a voting issue for me personally next election. 💙💛
The lingering "peace dividend" - since the end of WW2 and the cooling of the Cold War, and no doubt our proximity to the US - the world's largest military and our relative geographic isolation from hotspots has all contributed to our complacency and anemic procurement.
But one of our strengths continues to be in military training and capacity building, as seen in Ukraine's 2023 request for renewal into 2025 of Canada's Operation UNIFIER (started in 2015) - now operating in Poland and the UK since russia invaded Ukraine in 2022.
Real academics, with true academic honesty, simply laugh at these fools and hacks. Time will prove their sins that destroy our once great union.
Those in Poland against Ukrainian grain are probably a small noisy coterie causing trouble, similarly the separatists in Ukraine were a relatively small group making noises, making people think that everyone was for them. That is how pressure groups go for publicity, duping us ordinary lay bunnies with dodgy extreme hysteria and lies. Something similar happened in 2014 at the Maidan in Kyiv, a small pack of dodgy zealots trying to dupe the general populace. As far as the above separatists go, they are the kids, grandkids of Russians resettled in Ukrainian vacated abodes after their original occupants were forcibly sent to Siberian gulags, 80, 90 years previously. Crafty Muscovy politics in 2014 in Kyiv by the descendants of those resettled Russians, creating a division in Ukraine. Those separatists were/are a relatively small group. The bolshies in Russia in the 20th century were a relatively small group, but into extreme activity, terrorising others.

I agree with your guest. I believe that doing the right thing is always the best course of action. Either Russia is in the wrong, or it is in the right. Either supporting Ukraine benefits us, or it does not. If we believe that Ukraine is in the right and they are fighting for our freedom then we MUST give them what they need to WIN. Nothing else matters. In competitive sport we have a saying: Go BIG or go home. While I give Biden credit for sending the aid that he has sent, he has failed to tell us the truth, that we must do whatever it takes to WIN. If he just had the courage and strength of character to say that, the people of the US would rally behind him and the Ukrainians would quickly defeat the Muscovites on the battlefield and end the war.

The cause of the war is simple Ukraine after the fall of the USSR Russia allowed Ukraine to be an independent country if they remain a neutral country. They violated this pledge and applied to join NATO.
Also Ukraine has killed 14,000 of their own citizens in Eastern Ukraine in the last 10 years of shelling the region and they asked Russia to come in and save them.
This video does not tell you about Ukraine killing of their citizens.
