Hi Nick, I've been listening to the rungum podcasts the past few weeks now, they're great! Just stumbled upon this channel of yours, good job responding to the comments, definitely a good way to connect with your fans and keep the channel more active. Just a note of you are to do another video like this. Your way of graphing this is nice for the viewers since they can see the numbers easily translated but the time should be in seconds only. For example, 1:57 translates to 117 seconds, where you have it just written as 157, which is 2:37. This messes up your performance improvement percentage. For example, your progression from 1:57 to 1:55: Performance Improvement Percentage = (((new time - old time) / old time) * 100) Using your numbers you would get: (((155 - 157) / 157) * 100) = 1.27% Using seconds: (((115 - 117) / 117) * 100) = 1.71% It looks like a small difference but I'm sure as you know at elite levels of racing every % of improvement is a big deal. Anyways, keep up the great work. It was interesting to listen to you talk about your progression throughout your career.
The difference between a champion and also ran is.......elusive. Good coaching, psychological, good timing in periodization are all factors. Every time I see your videos it just fills me with more drive to better myself. I appreciate all your videos, and I thank you sir!
That’s crazy you ran a 1:57 at 15, a kid from my school ran 2:03 as freshman which was seen as a disappointment because he had run 2:05 in 8th grade with pretty much no competition to pace off of so they thought high school would push him into around the 2 minute barrier but despite this he didn’t give up and ended up running a 1:53 his senior year of high school and is now running at Georgia tech and I believe he hit 1:50 last year as a junior
I ran 1:56.6 in 10th grade. Never got much faster in the 800m. I blame bad coaching, no one to train and push me and being distracted with girls and partying. Takes discipline!!

very glad you liked it!! thanks for watching
Stefan Holm (Swedish High Jumper) has a really cool chart like this for his career. He was so resilient too. He jump basically the same PR when he retired at 32. Deep squats for the win!
7 of the 8 finalists in the 2012 olympics never ran faster times again. That's insane!
Hey, Nick, would love it if you talked about periodisation. I often look at your programme leading up to the 2012 Olympics and try to digest how and why it's changing from month and month. Would be great to get your take on how workouts specifically changed throughout the season. Thanks
yes! Will make this video sometime in April
Last year I realised I loved 800m with a time of 2,20
Today I ran a 2,09 800m!
- 2021/06/20
How you doing in it now?
I think you’re inspiring me to switch my main event to 800
What's up man? My nephew Brandon Johnson PR running with you...good luck with your channel....Coach Hebert
Right at the end of grade 12 I caught Pneumonia and struggled to get through the last half of my school season of Track. Went from running around 51 second 400m to losing just over a second every time I ran... I feel your story to my heart when you tell it, and I appreciate your encouraging words, I'm 39 now and looking at getting back into doing 400 / 800 for the fun of it.
Got a chance to watch a local runner clock a state best, 1:50.02..so damn strong!
that is a great time!!
I ran a 2:19 as a sophomore. Quite running for a year though, getting back into it for junior yearp
hey man great video. as someone who was severely injured and worked back into running in college I love the honesty and great video. you should think about going on shark tank with run gum hah!
you are really a great runner for the type of body you have......
1:43.03 was a great race, Nick................I saw that one.
Fantastic, looks good.
My sophomore year of cross country this year in high school I ran a 16:50
impressive!!
thanks!
thank you!
8:57 - Did you mean to say you signed a deal with Brooks? Just curious. Loved the video!
no, my first pro contract was with Nike. I ran for Nike 2006-2013, Brooks from 2014-2017
1:42 wow!! i cannot even imagine how does it feels like... passing 400 at 49-50 and keep going the same pace untill the end, you should feel so proud of yourself....my time was 1.58 when i was 16 and today i'm taxidriver, and you know what? i'm 41 and i'm begining to run again, first goal, get rid of the extra 15 kg and after that you are in danger man x) x)...just kidding, but i'm curious of what will be capable of. greetings from barcelona.
2:18 in 8th grade. What should I do to prepare for the track season in my first high school year? I did 400/800 but I might be moving to 800/1600 because I'm much faster over the mile.
Fascinating this is badass like a guy benching 150lb in high school to 800lb in mid 20s
Nick was fast as a Freshman jeez I am a freshman running 2:08 like how did u run 1:57 in the 800m as a freshman thats crazy
Great progression! But you really are talented. Sometimes it's sad to see people try and try and get nowhere.
Very nice video, thank you
I haven’t run an 800 in 3 years when I was 14. I ran a 2:28 pr but never got within 6 seconds of that in any other race that year lol
I'm depressed. I couldn't believe it when I somehow put a 62 and 66 back to back in a relay when I was a senior for a 2:08 in a big meet. But who knows what I would have run if I had kept going into my 20s and used weight training and other techniques.
Hey nick for lettr club is it only for America? I'm an a Australian 800m runner who's run 1:50 and got to recently compete at the youth olympic games. You are a massive inspiration for me and you are my favorite 800m runner ever. I really want to be able to get a signed photograph of the london 2012 olympics however i dont think lettr club allows me to register if i'm from the outside of the United States.
hello! Yes, sorry Lettr Club is only available in the US at the moment. Hoping to have international options by the end of this year
