Do you enjoy these race recap videos? I'm happy to make more of them! I'm also happy to break down races that I wasn't in. Let me know what you want to see, you can DM me here: instagram.com/nicksymmonds
Yes these are awesome; whenever I watch Olympic events, I always wonder what’s going on in the minds of these amazing athletes and this provides amazing insight!
would be interested to see how you would rank all Olympic 800m gold medalists of the "modern" era, (1960 onward). Qualitatively or quantitatively ? Snell above Rudisha? , where does Wottle fit? Cruz?
Studies have shown that Olympic bronze medalists are happier with their performance than silver medalists. That's just how elite athletes are. If you win bronze, you usually feel that you gave it your all against great competition and were rewarded by getting on the podium. If you win silver, you can't help but think that maybe it could have been gold. As I tell my daughter and son when they race, the finishing position doesn't determine whether you raced well. The finishing position is mainly determined by who decided to come to the race and how they performed. You can race poorly and win if the competition isn't strong. You can have the race of your life but be up against a David Rudisha or a Michael Phelps.
Great to hear some insight on what it’s kinda like for you going into a race. I ran in the early 80s, nowhere near your level though. There was no prize $ back then so it would be Interesting to hear how runners can make $ competing these days.
You are my hero, man! I ran the 800 my senior year and it was such a grueling race. Of course I wasn't really good, typically 2:05-2:10 range, but I was proud to do it. I had a coach in 8th grade tell me I would never be a runner. Its been many years and I am trying to get back to running again. It's really tough when you haven't ran consistently in 10 years, but my best friend and I are trying to get back to it.
I think you are a good guy. I still compete in the pole vault at age 72. Was ranked number one in the USA 2021 outdoor. It’s a true blessing. I like you’re humility and that you are also take pride in what you do. I enjoy you’re videos
Today I was thinking about my city league championship where I had built up for 4 years to be the varsity 1600M champion. I was the county champion this season so I came into the race with confidence. Led the whole race and with 300M to go, I lengthened my stride and began to kick at 250M (in my usual style, since speed isn't my gift). With 70M to go I was outkicked and got second, I was shocked but it was fair! It's been 5 years, but I still think about it from time to time during my training runs even now, as a 24 year old. I will continue to use this upset as fuel for my future goals on the roads in the 5K, 10K, half marathon, marathon, and beyond! Great to hear this story, Nick! Thank you for your insight into your fascinating career!
Everytime you discuss the 800m and Rudusha, you show a lot of respect to the man. That makes you even greater. I'm South African, and I used to like your kick back in 2012+.
Nick. I’ve watched your channel for a while now, and know your racing career. I hear what you just said about the bittersweet. How you were almost a champion. But Nick, I’m a former 800 meter runner here, talking to you now. Coe was my guy, my hero, the one who I looked up to, and kept me going. So Nick, take it from a guy who knows what a champion is - because Sebastian Coe was the ultimate champion if ever there was one. And that is to say this, Nick Symmonds: that beyond a shadow of a doubt, YOU ARE A CHAMPION.
And suddenly the admiration you express towards young Evan in your videos, feels glaringly serendipitous. Giving a phenomenal performance and coming in second place - that bittersweet pride. You see yourself in him! That's so awesome.
Getting second in the 800 is the absolute worst. Got out kicked in the last 20 meters of a state championship and still think about what could I have done to this day.
This is so helpful, learning that perseverance and talent do pay off. Keep doing these videos Nick. You are resonating with my teenagers. They call you coach Nick and actually pass on your tips to their teammates. You have the perfect balance of passion, humor, and wisdom. Thanks.
You're such an underrated athlete Nick ! I had so much fun hearing your feedbacks and i almost shed a tear. I really would love to see you moving up to the marathon like Sir Mo Farah did.
This got to be the best video on your both channels, just so much insight from the actual most significant race of your career. Thanks a lot for being so open and transparent, I really think Track & Field needs it right now.
SUPER, SUPER, SUPER interesting and fun video. I have incurable stage 4 cancer metastasis in my spine. That SILVER is absolutely HUGE Nick. I've watched you for years. No regrets Nick!!!
This is my favorite one yet! As an 800m runner, I love breaking down my races and learning from them. It’s fun hearing your breakdowns. I would love to see the video on what a professional runner makes. I think that ransparency will help the sport!
Gah!! Love these race recap videos. It's seems so rare that we "civilians" get to go inside an athlete's head during a race. And you have a very fluid and engaging way of speaking and presenting. Thanks for taking the time to share and keep them coming!
Great to hear your commentary, I was with you all the way! I loved 800m the most, ran 1:55 or something like that when I was competing (30 years ago 🤣). Nowhere near the times I look at on RUclips but I understand the tactics. Good luck in the future.
Totally relate with the malcontent. I've learned to find other ways to be happy with things outside my control but I agree. Very well articulated by a quality champ.
Love this explanation. I remember being shook watching you both times. As an oregon native and getting to meet you in 08 at the trials I always saw you as a local star absolutely killing it. The way you ran and the longer hair you had in the early years reminded me of Pre's grit and energy 💪
Love the way you relive this! One can tell you LOVE this ! Man what an accomplishment. Still never "2nd is the first loser" must have felt more real. Keep up the content !!!!!
This is very beautifully guided insight into your sport. I have always watched track and field. And 800m+ has always been so annoyingly boring for me UNTIL NOW. wow, all the tactics and thinking you to do in a run, amazing. congratz!
Absolutely loved how you shared your race analysis and preparation for that race. Still remember watching it on T.V. Was rooting for you and was absolutely thrilled when you medaled. Love from India ❤
It is really amazing hearing you share your experiences at the highest heights of the sports. It’s quite inspiring and educative. This is Information that only athletes of your caliber possess.
It doesn’t matter if you’ve won or not but you still got a medal. This might be one of the top 3 most satisfying races. You have the second best kick in the 800m ever
Hi Nick, your fans from Malaysia. Although I do not join big running competitions, representing a country like you, you make me being able to relate some of the "moments" in each of the running contest I have joined, kinda like a flashback of some of those moments, making my heart racing too. You are a very impressive runner.
Nick, appreciate so much your transparency on your race strategy, psychological highs/lows , and even your career earnings. Refreshing to see such a down to earth athlete.
Loved this video just to hear what was in your head. Younger me, when I was a HS/D3 runner, really would have benefitted from the nuggets you shared here. T&F knowledge and coaching have come so far since my days on the oval. Thanks for what you are doing for the next herd (for the Bison in you) coming up and for us old runners who are still out there or have returned to the roads.
Nick is still such a good example of how no matter what level you play in college...you can compete at the highest level. Still crazy to think that a DIII athlete has competed at such a high level
You make me so motivated for track man, it’s my senior year and I got some big moves I’m tryna go for and I know I couldn’t do it without you, you’re videos helped me A LOT
Awesome video bro! Congrats on your successes at Oregon and as a pro! SO glad to see you medal there with great racing strategy. Great analysis and insight...enjoy ALL your vids...thanks!
I really enjoy these videos. It's interesting to listen to the perspective of an athlete who's competed at the highest levels. Makes the sport just that little bit more relateable :)
I really do enjoy these videos, as someone who loved to watch my own races back I love looking at professionals doing the same so there isn't any fuzziness from spectator assumptions. I would also definitely like to hear more about life as a professional runner. While I'm far from the times I would need to run, it was a dream of mine running in college and one I still believe I can achieve. Really love the videos Nick! Keep it up!!
"I think Wikipedia says it perfectly..." Definitely not a quote you hear every day! Thanks for these recaps, Nick. Really awesome analysis and fun to hear about your experiences.
This video was so good! The way you spoke about it made me feel like you've re-ran it in your head 1000s of times. It made it one of your best videos for me, great job man 👏
Hey man still an accomplishment about one in a million people can say they have achieved. You were so amazing and your work ethic was crazy insane! You still are an incredible runner to this day! Much love Nick, I’d love to get back into track but I’m Not sure how to really. I’m A sophomore in college and I’m not quite sure what my options are to get back into the grind of track.
Hi Nick, I really enjoyed the tactical talk in this, it fascinates me the thought processes that become second nature when you run this level. I've just sent it to my son to pick up anything he can from it!

He won Bronze in Beijing 2008 and Silver in Berlin 2009. No Olympic medalist has run a World Leading time in the 800 the year after winning a medal in the Olympics.

Aman was a beast that year... he was the favorite going in to 2013 world championships. You had a great race but I personally think your 2012 Olympic finish was a better knowing the intensity level and everyone was racing to beat rudisha. Plus your time was crazy fast for a 5th place finish.
