Hi Friends Happy MONDAY!
Yay Mondays. Hope your week/weekend was fantastic. Todays story is low key really heavy and sad and ugh, just awful. I kept getting recommended this over and over again so finally I caved and decided to share the story about Sylvia Likens. I definitely think in the future I just need to stay away from stories like these, they mess with me way too much. Dont get me wrong all the stories are awful , but this one was just super awful.
Anywho, Love and appreciate you guys so much! Me and my cold sore need a vacation now. Hope to see you very soon

the fact that her own SISTER didn't believe that both of her sisters were abused got me mad , she could have saved Sylvia from those monsters . smh
She tried to and even went to the house but Gertrude refused to allow Dianna entry to the property, stating that she had "received permission" from their parents not to allow either of the girls to see her. She then ordered Dianna to leave the property.
@@nancytwinkle7677 she should've believed her the first time when she told her. It was too late by the time she came back.

You'd be shocked how often people dismiss abuse simply because it's inconvenient for them to accept or change their plans
A friend was going through domestic abuse situation and everyone thought she is exaggerating till she forwarded voice memos she secretly recorded. She is now going through family court and hears similar stories in her visits
When Bailey said that she never wanted someone dead as much as this family I felt that. Honestly I want everyone dead who EVER hurt a finger of Sylvia’s because she was such a pure sweet girl 🥺🥺
Emma Kramer most of them died, and they died young. About 3 years ago Paula the oldest daughter was working in a school and was outed and fired for her part.
Honestly, I appreciated all the shade you were throwing. I remember reading this case a couple months back and I felt the same way. There are SO MANY PEOPLE who failed poor Sylvia and for EVERYONE to have been let off so easy....truly a failure of the justice system
Ainslee Raasch this case is so disgusting
Only one I don't blame is Jenny.
I remember reading this a few months ago and getting angrier and angrier and I hadn’t even got to the sentences part... fcking ridiculous. I don’t know what happened to that family but since the justice didn’t punish them I hope they live with the guilt and shame forever
This. The whole community should be ashamed. What would that beautiful girl have accomplished in life?
It’s honestly disgusting that the “justice” system really doesn’t bring justice. EVERY. PERSON. INVOLVED should have stayed in prison for the rest of their lives. No parole. No ability to change their names. I’m so angry!!!
But are you forgetting that gertude forced the kids on the block to do things to Sylvia (but your right about the children) but you may be forgetting the girl who was forced to do things but when she got the chance to tell the cops, she did without hesitation
Mae Hall No that was Jenny, Sylvia’s sister. She never hurt her own sister and also had gone through some abuse, just not as bad.
@@minisn3066 ohh because based off of what I read it said different but it's ironic because I'm watching the movie about her right now
Mae Hall she never forced them to do anything to her they willingly payed that 5 cent to beat her
Welcome to America.
One of Sylvia's last sentences was "I wish my daddy was here". That is so heartbreaking, this is the most horrifying case I've read about
that was her wish before she died, jenny told her what she wanted before she died :(((
The takoda collins case is on the same level if not worse than this case 😥 I hate how common this probably is around the world and how so many children never get justice
This made me sick. Honestly sometimes the justice system is just a joke. Everyone failed Sylvia here. Her life was miserable and this strong girl deserved so much better. At least she is now at peace.
Yes I watched the two movies based on slyvia story an they were so sad I will never forget the awful things that was done to her
Tyaisa c was one of them The Girl Next Door? I watched this movie 5 years ago and it still haunts me what happened to Sylvia.
A joke??? A JOKE?? This ain't even funny. Not even close to failure.
It makes me so mad when a kid says they’re getting abused and no one believes them. You should always believe the kid until you know for sure when it comes to abuse
Absolutely! Whats the harm in believing them enough to at least investigate the situation?! No, i wouldn't want an innocent person charged with abuse, but EVERY claim of abuse should at the very least be taken seriously and looked into.
It happens to me :)

I’m from Lebanon Indiana, the town that Sylvia was from. We have a child advocacy center here named Sylvia’s place which harbor’s abused children. Her grave also constantly has flowers and stuffed animals
That's beautiful ❤
I just can’t understand why so many kids in the neighbourhood were willing and wanting to torture a human. They’re so sick
Teens bind together in a gang type mentality, "Well everyone else says how fun it is, everyone else is doing it. I'd be the next one if I didn't do it." It's the same today with bullying and why no one speaks up or against when they see something wrong. It's sad.
You might find reading up on Stanford Prison Experiment and Milgram's Experiment very interesting, it's very enlightening in this context.
Gang mentality
Right?!?! This whole case is horrifying. This poor girl. I couldn’t even begin to imagine 😔
She still never got justice. I can believe she only got 3 years in prison. This is so sad
These normally dont bother me as much but I honestly cried listening to this. That poor girl did nothing but exist.
Yeah this one particularly hurt me,not only do you have the family (one of them who were supposed to be friends) BUT THE WHOLE NEIGHBORHOOD JOINING IN ON IT
Same here😞💔
Same, wow, unreal.
Had a hard time with this story also.
💕 oof I had to fast forward bits of it too 💕 here for you sis
the moral of this story is to listen to children when they tell you they’re being abused or when they tell you they’re uncomfortable around someone. what happened to sylvia is an awful tragedy that i sometimes fail to even wrap my brain around.
All these stories have taught me is to take care of my own kids and raise them right. Cause they could get hurt by neighbors, grandparents, uncles and aunties. Sooooooo i am going to be stay at home mum until they go to school even then i will watch over them like a hawk.

I can't wrap my head around how this many people got involved. They CHARGED MONEY for others to come in and participate. How does this happen? You just casually mention to your pals - we are beating up my sister in the basement, wanna join in - and everyone says sure!??? I feel sick to my stomach, wasn't ready to hear this story today.
My thoughts exactly. It sounds like that whole neighborhood were psychopaths! 😤😢
Right! Did nobody know right from wrong back then? Mind is blown.
purplellama her kids in the home mimicking the abuse to me make sense especially because they watched their mom get abused and stuff but the entire neighborhood kids and all those kids friends im sorry but there is somthing wrong with all of the neighbors and friends of those kids and thier boyfriends like was it somthing in the water i just dont understand how these kids said nothing to their parents or siblings and no one was like oh these people are bher up this is wring maybe i should tell someone like who watches a girl get sexually abused and beat up and say nothing
Never underestimate human cruelty and how the feeling of power can make people sadistic.
And think about it, all those kids grew up to be adults just walking around. They may have children, daughters themselves. They could have become teachers, cops, working for the government etc and no one would know..

This story is a reminder that when someone tells you they’re being abused or in a scary situation, BELIEVE THEM. Even if it’s a child, it’s better to look into it and be wrong than to ignore it and have horrific consequences. 💔
Exactly!! Better be safe than sorry. I’d rather believe them and look into it, even if it’s not true, because just ignoring them and dismissing them right away let’s the abuser get away with. It takes only a few moments out of your day and could change a life.
The sad truth is even if you do tell somehow that Apple evil person finds away around it and the child still suffer so maybe even worse 😞. But definitely people need to believe and still try💕💕💕💕

side note, I think it's important to mention that whenever Jenny was abused, Sylvia would tell them to leave her alone and to focus the abuse on her. This girl had the purest soul and the first time I heard about this I cried a lot. One day, I would like to go to Sylvia's memorial and pay my respects. There are so many horrible stories out there but for some reason, this one affects me the most. I can only hope she is at peace now.
I believe that Gertrude was taking her anger about her failed relationships and failure as a "woman" (being undesirable and divorced multiple times with multiple baby daddies) out on a young, beautiful, innocent Sylvia.
Yes, I believe this is very plausible. She was jealous of the life Sylvia had ahead of her.
Not surprised but what's even more disturbing that she got HER KIDS AND THEIR FRIENDS to abuse and torture a girl. Normally it's just an adult abusing a kid but no...
@@angelusvastator1297 Well, Sylvia was the whipping child. If Gertrude was torturing Sylvia then she would have never turned her rage on any of them. There is also the mob mentality aspect - if you're in the bigger group and not the outcast, you have that sense of being "right" and being entitled to power over the outcast. It's a part of our social make up and it's sickening ... but when a group is made to hate one specific person or group of people, they feel empowered and bond together as a group when they do this type of stuff to the outcast. It's perhaps the most horrific part of human nature and psychology.
And she was abused by her first husband so maybe she learnt the abuse from him

If anyone was curious, Jenny, Sylvias sister, was so haunted by the memories of what happened to her sister that she grew into a nervous recluse. In 2004 she died at the age of 54 of a heart attack. The supposed cause of her heart attack was when the pizza delivery man got to her house a little earlier than anticipated and knocked on her door, he startled her to death.
I imagine that she was terrified of Gertude's threats, even after her death. Abuse never leaves you. You're always scared that it's going to come back, because how could something that took such control of your life for so long just be.. gone? The slightest little fright is enough to make me collapse, even though I never came close to enduring anything on the same scale as this. I wish that Sylvia could have lived and gone on to live a better life.

I’m sick to my stomach thinking Sylvia would regularly pass out from the pain she experienced. I hope there’s an afterlife just so Sylvia can live in peace and without pain
There is an afterlife its not a matter of hope or wish. There really is

@@ri260 bruh when are y'all gonna respect people's beliefs.
did anyone feel a sense of relief when hearing Sylvia passed away? idk just hearing that she no longer had to wake up and suffer such cruelty released the knot in my chest that formed from listening to this..
Yeah. Never so glad to hear people perished😭
To me this story reminded me of the story of the guy who stole one or two girls and chained them up in his basement and sexually abused them and one finally got pregnant. They never saw daylight all the windows were boarded up and they were always chained to beds and this happened for more than a decade. The only reason they escaped was because they convinced the guy the baby needed something and they were able to break down half the front door and a neighbor came running over and pulled her out and they were saved...it reminds me of this story because you are CLOSED off from civilization with no end in sight because you are stuck in a void where no one knows you exist. It’s so sad and makes me think how sad and terrible that her existence was never recognized. I didn’t feel better it made me feel worse like she had been forgotten. 😔
Very bittersweet
@@ashcatchum I remember that story and I watched the movie the Cleveland missing girls it was three of them the one that got pregnant was Amanda berry that story makes me so sad
I was so sad, but I'm glad she didn't have to suffer anymore. I hope she's resting well.
Just leaving a virtual hug or hand hold or head nod here for those of us that aren't quite ready to examine our own events that may have been triggered by this. I'm glad we're all still here and together. And I'm glad we all have Bailey to get so mad on our behalf.
I see you.
I think what's worse is that Sylvia's older sister didn't believe her. Dude that's your sister you could have saved her.
The sister did believe her .she was afraid & she has spoke out about this years ago.

Man this world failed Sylvia even after her death. I feel like the people involved got off easy.
One of the worst things of that time was the fact that neighbors would see/ and or hear abuse going on and would just tell their kids to avoid that house. Because it wasn’t their business. Y’all should read the boy called IT
I've read that book. It breaks my heart every single time.
A child called it
“A child called it”
Such a sad story so glad the boy was able to grow up and overcome his abuse
Best Story Ever!! Being a survivor too it gave me hope as a child. I've even thought about writing my own book like he did. It's amazing!
yeah..Dave Pelzer" a child called it"..horrifying story, but not as severly abused as Sylvia Lykkens, but almost..typical narcissistic abusive parent / care taker venting on the "whipping boy" "scape goat child"..it almost unbearable to read , let alone imagine it really happens, quite often too..
Poor Sylvia, this is absolutely horrendous. I am so sorry you experienced this. Rip.
Sylvia was failed by literally every level of authority that could have saved her. I can completely understand that Sylvia's parents, in the beginning, may have thought Gertrude was a safe person to leave their girls with since she was already a mother to 7 herself. People end up in tough situations. But even their dad should have been there on a regular basis, paying attention to their appearance and making sure they were really okay. The school did nothing. Cops didn't do anything. If just one person had kept digging into the situation and demanded more investigation into this, she may have lived. I hope this poor girl found comfort and peace. 💖💕
Yeah. Just ONE person from the kids paying 5cents or one bf or gf of Gertrude’s other kids or one bystander student peer. Like... practically the whole neighborhood was in on this it’s completely ridiculous.
It’s possible that some of the neighborhood kids told their parents, but the parents didn’t believe them.
The neighbourhood kids were part of the abuse, I doubt a kid is going to tell their parents“Hey, Mom ,Dad guess what I beat a girl today.” Plus Gertrude lied and in those days people tended to believe the parents
This is such a sad story! My dad needed help watching us when my sister and I were kids because he worked overnight. He asked our girl scout leader if he could pay her to watch us overnight. She became a second mom to us and her daughter is still our bestfriend. We'd craft, hang out, play. I'm so sad he wasn't able to find that great situation for his daughter. I'm just so sad about this.
I know its so sad
Sylvia's dad failed her. Come on!! You can't say this little 5 foot nothing 100lb woman kept you from your child! You could strong arm your way into the house. You could call the police... ridiculous. Poor Sylvia. Everyone that participated should be held accountable.
Ikr. He should have done more. Especially the older sister. Shame on all of them.
He quit paying the $20 a week he had agreed to pay some sucker to take care of his kids. She took it out on the kids. Most parents paying for childcare would be incredulous like $20 a week for two kids? And you didn't pay it? And THAT happened?
He did what a lot of dads do, unfortunately. Immediately going to, "Let's blame the mom so I can feel like I did nothing wrong & I'm a victim too!" It's never, "I should have done more. I should have fought back!"
Yea he obviously didn't care ENOUGH

Fun facts: Paula was fried from her job as a teacher's aide when they found out who she is.
Paula is now Paula Pace.
There's a movie called An American Crime about this case.
Elliot Page played Sylvia and Catherine Keener played Gertrude.
The saddest movie i ever watched
This entire town is awful, this poor girl.
This is off the subject but, who’s your favorite Bnha character?
The Child Advocacy Center in Lebanon Indiana is named Sylvia’s Place in honor of her. Sylvia is buried at Oak Hill Cemetery.
thanks for telling us that... maybe now she has some peace 😞
The sad fing fact is that this was all over 20$
that just makes everything so much worse
Shay Mars wdym?
@@bluefreakmsp1568 this all started because the dad didn't pay gertrude the $20 he promised
He actually did If you do more research she wanted the girls to basically tell their dad to send it because “he hadn’t” but she wanted more and then when she was “spreading rumors” about Paula Gertrude snapped basically
i mean, money had more value back them, but eitherway, what happebed to Sylvia is just cruel
Oh Sylvia. I am so sorry you endured this horror. I hope you are at peace, painless, and happy. You deserved the world.
Paula: why am I not as pretty as Syliva?
Paula's mother: *looks like a human lightbulb*
Exactly what I thought! That woman was clearly jealous herself that a young girl was so much more attractive than her, and I bet that's where a lot of the real violence came from. She's basically lost any looks she had before, she's had 3 failed marriages (2 to the same guy, ouch) and now she's got this pretty young girl with her whole life ahead of her in her house... She was definitely jealous
Hoetrude looks like a evil dinner lady 😬

Nah she doesn’t even look like a light bulb lol
After watching this, I read up on this case and it’s actually even worse than you told it. I went through various stages of nausea and anxiety while reading about Sylvia and wound up weeping bitterly for about 15 minutes straight. I have had trouble sleeping these past few days, I can’t seem to get this story out of my mind. Poor little girl. And how much evil there is in humanity.
Rest In Peace, Sylvia, and may all your tears be turned to joy and may your wounds be healed in the loving arms of your Creator.

yup. its an incredibly haunting story that stays with you.

Reminds me of the movie Mommie Dearest.
None of them should have never seen the light of day again. I believe they should have been tortured in the same exact way they tortured her everyday of her life while she was with them! This story really sickened me, so heartbreaking.
Gertrude's eldest daughter Paula had the most evil smile on her face in her mugshot. No remorse at all. She is as evil as her mother. I hope Sylvia is at peace now and with her loving family.
The fact that she was even allowed to become a teacher after getting out of prison!!!
@@nancytwinkle7677I hope someone posted this story on her school bulletin board

Facts. Only her oldest sister is alive in their immediate family.
Imagine your own sister not believing you like that's just messed up
I can't imagine. I just can't. I'm sure when she heard what happened to Sylvia she felt extreme regret.
And I know that haunted her for the rest of her life. You’re partially the reason she’s dead. Everyone failed her
That’s a painful life. So unfair......
Some sister dont have the best of relationships. Maybe too much jealousy, or maybe the perpetrator was a psychopath who fooled everyone.

Okay, Bailey’s warning at the beginning bothered me and ten minutes into the video I looked into the comments and this case is being compared to Furuta Junko’s and I just. No. I am permanently changed from reading about that case and cannot do this again. The real monsters have always been people. Thank you so much Bailey for warning us at the start and please know that you are not obligated to cover a case just because people ask for it.
I hope Sylvia is in heaven surrounded by angels and protection and love
Sylvia and Jenny were my grandma's friends. I legit had no idea until I signed up for myspace back in the day and my grandma freaked out bc she thought I would get myself into the hands of a Gertrude. She didnt outright say it until I was ~16 and I asked her if shes ever seen "An American Crime" bc I knew she loves true crime, horror, etc. I do know that she stayed friends with Jenny for a long while. Its so weird to me that the internet talks about this case so much but it feels like my grandma never stopped mourning her dear friend.
Im so sorry
When I first read this case, I was so angry! I wrote on this case for my law class. The way she passed away was horrible. A lot of it was spurned on by jealousy. RIP Sylvia.

Oh man Nicole. Yeah same on both counts.
She's the same age as my grandmother, and it pains me to know that she would've probably had her own grandchildren by now.
This is the first story you've told that's haunted me for days. The fact that this evil woman had numerous kids help her do this absolutely appalls me.
Rest in peace Sylvia. If heaven exists, let's be friends.
I live in Indiana and I found out about this case a few years ago. This is a case that truly enrages me and I feel awful for Sylvia’s family. Everyone that participated in hurting her (EVERYONE) needs to be punished for what they did.
I was really hoping that Sylvia survived, but there is an odd sense of relief that she passed away. She doesnt have to suffer anymore. RIP beautiful💜🖤
I agree. Poor thing. Almost wish she would have been able to Rest In Peace years earlier.
If she lived, she would still have to deal with so much trauma. I hate to say it, but at that point death was a merciful thing for her. Poor girl.. I wish I was alive back then. I would've done anything I could to help her. It makes me sick that so many people could be in on the abuse, and the only person to know and truly understand that it was wrong was the younger sister.
It’s hard to listen to child abuse especially when it’s so tragically unjustified and the perpetrators are given lighter sentences. People like Gertrude should be locked up forever and the key thrown out.
All child abuse is tragically unjustified?
Morbid Ghost Yes. How is that a question? Are you saying any form of child abuse is justified?
A A I’m saying it’s never justified
And that it’s tragic when it happens because no one deserves it especially children.
