Schizophrenia is a known disorder that can convince the person not to take meds or get help. If they take meds and get better they get convinced they're better forever and don't need it. It literally degrades your brain matter it causes actual brain damage from the moment it manifests. It literally eats away at your brain and is similar to dementia. Like I hate to do that but it is the one condition that literally is complete shut down of the brain making any sense. It's really messed up Bailey didn't do any research on schizophrenia to understand why it works this way.
@@SilverSunshine10 Yes.....I suffer an invisible illness myself, and that hit hard.....and I am a nurse, I feel for schicophrenics. Its such a incredible difficult and terrible illness. The reaction here just saddend me deeply. -_-
most schizophrenics are only dangerous to themselves (self-neglect, victimization due to bizarre behaviors and beliefs). it's VERY rare that a schizophrenic person is violent towards others.
If his claim is that he got on the bus and THEN heard the voices - WHY on earth did he have a large knife in his bag? Seems like a planned event and that if it wasn’t Tim on the bus it would have been someone else anyway. How awful.
Bailey missed the part where Tim’s mother was watching the news that day and seen what had happened but they didn’t show or say who the victim was. At lunch Tims mother and family said a prayer for that victim and their family not knowing they were the victims family /:
Oh my gosh, the poor family. This made me even more upset. I cant believe they were watching this before knowing it was him, and praying for the victim. What a horrifying nightmare and he seemed so full of life
the worst part of these stories isn't just that people are killed but that their bodies are treated so atrociously afterwards. nobody deserves to be mutilated or beheaded or eaten, even if they're already dead :(
It's hard trying to understand, and I always try. But deep down I know there's no logical reason... and there will always be people like this... as I read in a book, "There's two types of people, the pacifists and the violent people. Unfortunately the latter always have the last word". :/
Tim lived a few blocks away from me in winnipeg, i always appreciate seeing youtubers like you cover less known cases from smaller town like us, also love the way you say Regina 😂
Morgan Fahlman lol the way she said Regina was so cute... but also it made me realize it’s spelled the same as the name Regina but they’re pronounced so different 🤔
The case was covered in Germany, I remember the news about it from back then and was horrified because a friend of mine went backpacking in Canada shortly afterwards travelling on greyhound busses
This is hands down the most disturbing story I’ve heard on this channel especially for how public it was and how many people were around. The fact that this can just happen from a person sitting next to him on the bus is horrifying
I think that even if he was not responsible for the act, he was responsible for taking his meds. If he made the choice not to take his meds then he is responsible for the results of not taking them.
Wasn't he undiagnosed? I just started watching the video but I already know the case, and I remember he was undiagnosed, so he actually wasn't prescribed any medication? Not sure tho so correct me if I'm wrong
Beatrice Benedetti At the 7:30 minute mark she explains that he was diagnosed with schizophrenia in 2005. It was left untreated meaning he never took the medication for it.
One of the symptoms of paranoid schizophrenia is delusions, even whilst on medication, that often make people think that the meds are poisoning them or something similar. They often follow a pattern of going on and off their meds.
On TikTok, I saw a news interview of one of the passengers sitting in the same row as Tim McLean and he was coherent enough to tell the story, but you could tell he was in shock and would definitely need some counseling afterward :( what if he does it again?? And I never knew he had a son! Poor Colleen, imagine losing your boyfriend, the father of your unborn child in such a horrific way and then his parents sue you for custody and you lose your son too :( I hope she's okay, man...
My husband at the time was on the second grey hound bus. The one that pulled into help. I remember him calling me and the screaming was so horrific. It was life changing for us.
I’m so sorry for you and your husband, no one ever deserves to have to go through something like that my deepest sympathies go out for you and your family 😔
I remember this. The entire country was devestated, I can't even imagine the family, the busses or truck driver or even the RCMP officers that day. 😭 I sincerely hope your husband is OK now, and he was able to put this horrific day into his background.
I live in Manitoba. I remember when this happened. The entire country was shaken by this. Vince Lee gets to walk freely among us and live his life normally which is tragic for the McLean family. RIP Tim
They should've gotten psychological first aid, but I'm not sure if that was a thing back there. One of the main purposes of PFA is for the people not to develop PTSD
Actually we were offered counseling for ptsd. I til this day still have nightmares and I still continue to see a psychologist because this incident caused such extreme ptsd I have not taken a greyhound bus since.
If he was really so remorseful, he would understand he needs to be held accountable. This whole thing was infuriating. I can’t even imagine how painful this is to Tim’s family.
As soon as he was deemed fit enough to be discharged, he should've been transferred to prison to serve time for his actions, or should've been made to stay in the facility because what if he decides not to take his medication again? It'll just happen again. If he is stable enough to be released into the community then he is also stable enough to serve time for his actions 🤷🏻♀️
When bailey started her story with tim's story,, i thought tim is the criminal in this case and i was like " he sounds like a sweet boy though" but when i listened that he is the victim,, i am angry and sad now ..
I have a brother with schizophrenia. I have taken many classes and workshops on schizophrenia specifically. I have worked for county and state institutions. This person needs to be institutionalized for life. Many times statistically people with schizophrenia DO NOT stay on their meds! They take them feel better, then stop taking them. Just like most people with antibiotics….they think they are better once stabilized and no longer need them. It is a viscous cycle!
I met him at a carnival in Seabird Island. He was so sweet to me and my daughter. My daughter was kinda scared and he reassured her it was safe and he would tae care of us. On every revolution, he smiled and waved at us. He asked her if she like it after. He was so very nice to us! This was a shocking story. Prayers to his family.
Forget every horror movie you've ever watched... This... this right here is the stuff of nightmares! I would need lifetime therapy if I witnessed that. And what if one day he forgets his medications again. He should not be free.
@@drama2u it isn't forgetting often. It's a complicated issue and different for various people. Some of them don't like the side effects, others stigma of being on medication and how they were educated to think of it. BUT it also depends on the person. The mentally ill are more likely to hurt themselves, but when you get someone like this and to this extent it is a big shock.
There were also three people trapped in the back with him when this was going on. One was an old lady, and this guy had to help her and the others climb over the seats to get away. So scary. I think they definitely definitely should have kept Vince in a hospital for life. What happens the next time he doesn’t take his meds?! That’s crazy.
I completely agree. At the very least he should NOT be living independently, but in a hospital or, at the very least, a group home. Here's hoping he continues his medication.
I heard there was a child on the bus who suffered from ptsd and depression and was taken from her mother because she wasn’t “fit to raise her” anymore. It’s horrible

I think that's one of the reasons we all love her videos so much... Not at all like she's reading from a script like a lot of other True Crime YTers do... and they make it really obvious.
This nightmare shook a lot of Canadians and angered many on Vince’s release. Also, sadly one of the RCMP officers that attended this call took his own life because of severe ptsd. So many suffered, such a sad world.
His name was Cpl Ken Barker and he was one of the police dog handlers that arrived first on scene. He was a kind man and his loss has been felt throughout the RCMP family.
@@teresalawes4376 wow that is terrible! So heartbreaking! My husband is in the same career so I can imagine what it did to him. That is so so unfortunate 😔
@@spongemonkeysooz Thank you! No kidding, we are in the US. It is a nightmare, but we believe it is his calling so he is trying to stick it out. Even though our state is extremely anti-police and currently trying to pass several more laws that will essentially "handcuff police". But out state is paradise for criminals (New Mexico). It's a shame.
I live in Edmonton and remember when this happened. My husband (who was my boyfriend at the time) had to take a Grey Hound to Calgary not long after this happened. They were checking everyone's bags and luggage and had police and dog units everywhere. Oh and RCMP is short for the Royal Canadian Mounted Police
As a calgarian, I absolutely remember this happening. I also had to take a greyhound shortly after this and the security was stepped up so much. Unfortunately I've also gotten on greyhounds after this in smaller towns where there is virtually NO security and it always blew my mind because that's partially how things like this happen. When nobody is there to search bags etc then anyone could be bringing anything on to the bus. Hope you and your husband are doing well!! 🩷
I totally concur! Vince should never be allowed to walk free! I've worked with many schizophrenic patients and, those who have criminal backgrounds, never get to live independently. It is infuriating.
100% agree with you girl. Tim wasn’t the only victim. I feel so bad for all those witnesses, I could never imagine what those poor people are going through and his family and friends :(
I’ve heard podcasts on this story and I remember that one of the first responders ended up suffering PTSD so badly that he took his own life. Vincent should 100% not be walking free. He missed his meds once, who’s to say he won’t miss it again? Terrifying.
I personally don’t think he “missed” his meds I think he purposely didn’t take them, that coupled with the fact that he had a large knife concealed in his bag BEFORE he got on the bus, I think this was premeditated 🙁😡
I can’t BELIEVE he was let go... if he’s was not compliant with treatment then he continues to be a huge danger to the public and himself. I can’t believe it!!!
I’m from Canada and they are way toooo lenient here. Then again I’ve seen way too lenient cases in the US as well 🤦🏻♀️ ughhhh just so many people getting off easy
I can. I have a cousin who is schizophrenic and he has committed quite a few crimes. Stalking, barricaded a hotel room and injured a cop, has threatened people. He is still out in society. And this is in America.
I got off that bus when vince got on. My dad observed vince acting weird. He had a funny feeling about him. My father actually pointed Vince out to me.
Diana Bocanegra plus most people (whether that be our parents when we were young or a police officer or EMT) would also tell us to get away from the situation as humanly possible. Some even say “one body is better than two”
@@VictoriasUniverse people panic in this type of situations. everytime I spot a fight at the club or something I just flee the scene, it's like a natural response, you run from the danger. I can't blame the people that were there, he had a knife
I think it would be hard to tackle someone in such a cramp place. Also, possible no one present on the bus is as tall as the attacker and as bulky as the attacker. Also, you need to factor in fear and the fight or flight response of each individual present back then. But in the end, Tim was not the only victim of this event. The other passengers and people that tried to help will forever feel the guilt that they survived that day but one of them didn't.
@@Penelope1730 i mean tbh greyhound is the cheap option of travel. The reason why no one would sue them is the same reason no one would sue the dollar store for a faulty product. Wasn't Greyhound forced to change its slogan which at the time was "There is no such thing as bus rage"? The Iron E. Or maybe that was just a rumour? I don't know.
So nobody said “Hey, let’s NOT let this guy out because if he goes off his meds again, it could happen AGAIN?” Just disrespectful to all the victims especially a guy just living his happy life. Ugh!

I had a few experiences but nothing to this extent this is absolutely terrifying to me n I feel so bad for Tim imagine how scared he was to think he was left alone on the bus with Vince , I'm just hoping he was already past out or gone n wasn't with it enough to no what was really going on atm
That’s absolutely AWFUL. The part that breaks my heart the most is that Tim wasn’t even supposed to be on that bus. He was offered a plane ticket but the gently declined 💔 He should have taken the offer. BUT, even if he did, crazy man would have just selected a different victim. It would have been an awful story either way.
It's crazy & extremely sad to think about stuff like that how simple choices rather knowing or unknowing can have such a drastic change on your life & where you end up. I do what to travel around someday but am terrified to do it on my own because of causes like this. What if he took the plane or what if he sat at the front instead of the back? Who knows what could've happened

I remember when this happened. I was kinda young, so I was mostly shielded from the story, but I remember the hatred for Greyhound after it happened. Probably because they did nothing for those affected. Incredibly scary that he's just out here, allowed to live life. I suffer from mental illness, and am very against the idea that he was just allowed to walk free. He failed to take his medication, resulting in a lost life and lives clouded in PTSD, therefore he's responsible for the action. I really hope everyone affected managed to get therapy and are able to find some peace.
Vince may not belong in jail, but he belongs in an institution for the rest of his life. The act was beyond violent. Who is responsible if this happens again? There is a reason why these individuals end up in jail here in the states, there isn't a great place for them as they are violent and can't be kept in a traditional psychiatric hospital.
Patients who don't take their meds should be held accountable!!! If he was taking meds and they weren't working, maybe some extra help and understanding, but if you have an avenue for treatment, refuse it, and then commit a crime...?! Come on!!
I have bipolar depression and I know if I miss taking my meds I’ll spend the rest of the day snapping at people for the tiniest things. This is 100% his responsibility. He needs to be locked away.
did you even listen, medications are expensive. He obviously can't afford it as he had to sell his mf luggage to make money. this happened while he was schizophrenic, so he can not control what he was doing, so he can not be fully be held accountable, people like you should do your research.
Armani berg I have a psychology degree and I agree. What I DON’T agree with though is his full release. Considering what happens when his condition goes untreated, he should have been kept longer in a mental facility I think. Statistically, very few schizophrenics are violent and if they are, they’re most likely to hurt themselves than others. The issue is, the ones who DO hurt others tend to have more severe forms of the condition. It’s fine when they’re on their medication but unfortunately the OP is missing a HUGE part of the issue with schizophrenia. It’s not like bipolar. Schizophrenia is true madness. Your brain literally cannot tell the difference between reality and imagination. That part of your brain is disabled. If he’s late taking his meds due to an unavoidable occurrence (eg. Lost his keys and can’t get into his house for hours, or a blizzard prevents him getting home from work etc) those paranoid thoughts quickly manifest! Those paranoid thoughts say things like “the medication is poison! They’re trying to control your mind! Don’t take them!” ☺️ Their ability to rationalise is completely affected, so unfortunately they don’t have that awareness to have responsibility. Bipolar can have manic episodes, but the vital component is you still can separate the real world from imagination. If you suddenly saw a tiger in your kitchen, you might initially get a fright, but you would think “how is this possible? How could it get in?” Etc. Schizophrenia is unique in that the part of your brain that reasons this way is entirely impaired. 💖🙌🏻
Armani berg I would willingly acknowledge that he wasn’t aware of his actions and that medication is expensive but someone paid for his actions, someone lost their life. People suffer mental trauma from his actions. Yes, we should take into account his mental well-being but also other variables and outcomes.
Decapitation is really grisly and all the other things he did are horrible too. If you don’t feel squeamish after this you’re probably completely desensitized to gore
They should've just kept him in an institute at least if he was not himself during the act. His hallucinations are sooo severe and dangerous. Like what if he stops taking his meds again?
exactly !! i’d like to think somebody’s keeping tabs on him but still , who knows how long it would take for him to snap if he didn’t take his medication even for 1 day
@@kiya3810 this just hit me like what if the doctor who's following him regularly or the pharmacy he gets his meds at are like warned to report if he misses his scheduled appointments and buying his meds. That could put the people somewhat at ease if it was true.
I've learned about the Canadian system of assessing whether someone is fit for parole/return to society in my psychology of law class, and it is very unlikely the board would let him go free into society if he didn't seem fully committed to taking his medication and seeing a psychiatrist on the regular.
I remember when this all went down. I was working for the carnival during that time and a lot of people I worked with there knew Tim. So messed up this whole story.
I love it that you said "learning a language is effing hard". So many people criticize or judge people who don't speak perfect english (as a second language) and all I can think is "Cool, try to learn Chinese, then get back to me"
I try to get people to do an exercise. You talk to them but every verb you have to think and say three different ones than the one you would naturally use. It gives a little insight to why people are having a bit of trouble with English.
But why couldn’t they have kept him in a facility... if he wasn’t “criminally” responsible, he’s still clearly a danger to himself or others. Regardless of that, though, he wasn’t taking his medication. That is a willful action, so yes... he was responsible. Maybe in that moment, he wasn’t himself, but he knowingly stopped taking his medication that was prescribed to help him... and then he mutilated someone and ATE PART OF HIM. But yah, sure. Release him. Makes sense.
Nobody is prepared to accept that mad man into their facility, he should be dropped in the middle of the desert where no people or animals and leave him there
Part of schizophrenia if that often they believe they dont need their meds. They take them for a while, get better and then go "i dont need these anymore". Psychosis is stronger than people realize. Should he be in jail? No. Should he be released to the public? No. In this care he should be in a psychiatric facility to keep him under watch full time but not in a punishment system as he litterally unable to thing normally

At the 7:30 minute mark she explains that he was diagnosed with schizophrenia in 2005. It was left untreated meaning he never took the medication for it.
One of the symptoms of paranoid schizophrenia is delusions, even whilst on medication, that often make people think that the meds are poisoning them or something similar.
They often follow a pattern of going on and off their meds.

I live in Edmonton and remember when this happened. My husband (who was my boyfriend at the time) had to take a Grey Hound to Calgary not long after this happened. 💖🙌🏻
He was not treated at all for his mental illnesses
Armani berg I would willingly acknowledge that he wasn’t aware of his actions and that medication is expensive but someone paid for his actions, someone lost their life. People suffer mental trauma from his actions. Yes, we should take into account his mental well-being but also other variables and outcomes.
Armani berg I thought in Canada they have free healthcare???
im pretty desensitized to gore, but this case made me sick to my stomach. something about it is just,,,so unsettling
Decapitation is really grisly and all the other things he did are horrible too. If you don’t feel squeamish after this you’re probably completely desensitized to gore
Same. I had to stop half way through.
it's the random nature of such a brutal act that makes everyone uneasy
Same!
pure evil, that’s why
They should've just kept him in an institute at least if he was not himself during the act. His hallucinations are sooo severe and dangerous. Like what if he stops taking his meds again?
exactly !! i’d like to think somebody’s keeping tabs on him but still , who knows how long it would take for him to snap if he didn’t take his medication even for 1 day
@@kiya3810 this just hit me like what if the doctor who's following him regularly or the pharmacy he gets his meds at are like warned to report if he misses his scheduled appointments and buying his meds. That could put the people somewhat at ease if it was true.
@@youtapilote sounds like a business idea
I'd like to think that; and maybe that he's so horrified by what he did that he is never not taking his pills and is regularly seeing a psychiatrist
It gives a little insight to why people are having a bit of trouble with English.
currently learning chinese and istg it’s so incredibly hard
@@KayKay114 that’s an amazing exercise ! And technically people should do it in every language, not only English speakers. Will do.
True that
I am terrified that he is roaming free. His act was so gruesome. I found this story way more disturbing than any other.
Completely agree with you. He should have had, at least, some time. Make you think twice before stopping your meds again.
Canada.
that part was the eyes.
