- This is the car that led to the David Lee Dino. He saw it and asked Kev at Mototeqnique to make him one too. Designed to be driven, it has a Ferrari 328 engine and numerous other developments. I got to drive this special car. H

David Lee's Dino brought me here. These cars are just stunning.
Yes the wheels aren’t to my taste but thank god the car is now being used and not bought for investment purposes
absolutely Paul!!
Sorry but looking at this car again, it’s a case of the guys got more money than sense, don’t know who worse, the garage that did this or the guy with the check book, the only way to complement the wheels is cut a hole in engine lid and bolt a belt driven blower chromed up on, loads of Dino’s are well used and enjoyed, with what he spent on mods would have a nice 355 and enjoyed Dino as normal. Got to have wiped 100k of its value
@@checker3694 Why does owning a Ferrari always have to be about it's monetary value? Turns exciting cars into yawn-fests.
SkyWizardless It doesn’t, why butcher a car out of boredom, to prove what? It’s like what a 17 year old does to his cords.
@@checker3694 Except that it's not butchered, it's better in pretty much every way (a major exception being those wheels which don't suit it at all).
Yet another great video, David Lee has a great collection and is a regular on Mr Leno’s equally great channel 👍 keep up the good work Number27
I’ve watched this video several times & I’m glad you were able to appraise this car as you are more down to earth than many RUclipsrs. Undoubtedly this upgrade was needed.
The standard Dino has a wonderful design yet a bit let down on performance. I just wish I could afford one of these upgraded cars! Thanks for the video!
I’m in love with this car! Always loved the Dino but this is just wow! You are so lucky to drive these cars Jack
I am!!!
Doc was my best friend for many decades. I had a detail/restoration shop, he was a renisience man who could paint, sculpt, play concert piano like a concert master. He also was a fabulous doctor, in charge of the burn center, micro-surgery and other sections. He also raced some of his cars. He had a collection of American classics, and sport exotics. (20 + of them) He owned several different Ferrari's, 2 he kept for many years, one a Daytona Spyder, the other was my favorite his 1973 Dino 246 GTS . It had the chairs and flares, in the same color combination as yours. It also had been tweaked to perfection mechanically, bracing of the body structure was done, and suspension beefed, rims were widened. I'm sorry you never got to drive that car, the gated shifter had a fingertip touch, a light clutch, perfect tight steering. I took care of detailing and any restoration needed. Doc also had me pick up new purchases all over the country and drive them back to California. He had me drive all his cars to keep them going. I drove the 246 GTS once a week for 17 years. 0-60 was around 6-5 to 7 seconds and top speed 148-150 mph with glorious sounds from 3000 rpm up. It had power windows and a/c, but under the huge windshield from knees to head, the a/c was a suggestion more than fact. One perfect summer evening Doc and I went for a ride in the country, re was stressed and had me drive, saying to 'open it up.' with 6 chp cars checking the area, I discovered a Dino 246 can hide behind a very small hedge
Ha!! monumental comment! I really do need to try a standard one to see what people mean, glad you did!!
You have to admire someone who takes a car they love and dares to make it their own! Great car and great vid, cheers :-)
Only recently watched this after David Lee credited you guys with your awesome work on his car.
Love both fiat and Ferrari dinos, they are amongst the most stunning cars made.
Eagle having been sorting out e types for years and I'd rather have a car I can drive and enjoy, than an investment sat gathering dust and slowly appreciating.
I'm sure Enzo would love both cars.
Fantastic car, really enjoyed seeing it in action!
Ironically the prettiest Ferrari wasn’t considered a ‘real” Ferrari , how times have changed. A beautiful machine.
Omg what a beautiful noise that little car makes....and WOW, that Fiat Dino is fantastic!! What a badass rig that is....great vid bro, your content and delivery were both on point...
Thanks for the lovely comment Branon, glad you liked the video!!
Wow David Lee's Dino....absolutely stunning.
I’d rather see someone do this than have it as an investment. It’s value increases the more adventures you put in it.
I only drove an original Dino once, back in 1985...and there was a lightness that was magic. I wonder if these two V8s lose that. A black Dino coupe, for me, is the most beautiful car of all time.
I think they do loose some of that lightness... but it’s not too bad!
@@Number27 I guess I feel the Dino should be a V6. I'd be more interested in the changes if they were made to Influenzo. But I'd stop short of electric throttle and power steering and all of that.
So amazing to see in action... love the upgrade! All Ferrari is what counts!
Thank you for watching!
@@Number27 Sure thing!
Wow what an amazing car!!
I would much prefer a custom exotic than something off the self it's just way more special.
My favourite thing about older cars is that you can see all of the engine! I hate all the plastic covers in modern cars, that Ferrari and a singer 911 now that would be perfect 😊. Excellent job on the video Jack 🖒
agree on the modern plastic engines Ryan!
As Singer 911s are awesome, their price tags are utmost ridiculous !
Remember seeing this car a year or so ago when it appear on Petrolicious I think. Love everything about it... except the wheels :)
No i cannot believe it. Great to see
Wow......great video! What have I been missing all this time??
Very good of you to say Don!! Glad you enjoyed it!
Phenomenal. Love It. Been waiting for someone to do a Countach...
Wow, never thought of that.. but what would they do to it??
Beautiful car ! David Lee's car video led me here. Restomods are very appealing when done right - like these ones.
My opinion of the wheels ? Make them black. A lot less noticeable.
Beautiful work and excellent video.
Even those wheels can’t spoil the look of that car, loved the look of it way back when I saw it being driven by Tony Curtis in the pretenders.
Well done Kevin - I was lucky enough to own a 308GTB that had had the bodywork restored by his East Molesey team and took it over there to show him how it was holding up and met him - total star. Yes wheels awful and too big, but it doesn't matter if you trash them - good thinking. Just the loveliest view from the drivers' seat over those wings.
Yep, Kev is a lovely guy!! You still have the 308?
Love it wheels and all.
I love it. While I don't normally like 360 wheels, I think the bronze color really makes them blend okay-ish here.
Umm okish maybe!! Thanks for watching
What a fabulous car.despite the wheels
I want this one too. :D
Great car and video. Love a Dino with a F355 engine if it fits. Would be my perfect car.
Thanks Richard... glad you like it. Will be even better once the new wheels go on
Cool car but the wheels are horrible
HEKTIC458 Do you think they'd be all right in gloss black, or do you just not dig the shape?
I concur....not period correct...all wrong......yikes
I think they dont belong to the car but the car was built with 360 brakes, so the 360 wheels were the option avilable back then, the Lee dino instead was built with an unlimited budget so they made custom vintage wheels to give perfect clearence to the brakes.
I think F40 wheels would feet well...not too much modern, not too much vintage
You had me at "328 Engine" ...
And lost me at "those wheels" :(
hahaha!!! the wheels are going.. to be replaced with the cmpagnolo type
That is superb news, these wheels really don't fit the shape. I do wish he had gone with 16" Campagnolo wheels instead of 17", which would have allowed him to avoid mangling the wheel flares with that horrid horizontal lip. The horizontal lip just doesn't match the timelass class of the rest of the body, IMO. Alternatively, if he had spent a little time tucking the wheels into the existing arches, that would have done the trick too.
Having said that, I am of divided minds wrt. this car. The original Dino 246GTS is one of the most beautiful cars ever made, and changing it in this way gives me pause. I would hope that at least it is possible to put it back in the future, and that no original components were butchered to make this. I am no purist, but I do believe in reversibility of changes, especially when original components are rare.
Putting things in perspective, I absolutely do believe that each person should be able to customise their cars to their heart's content, but with the above caution in mind. There is nothing more dreadfully boring than stuffy concours events with lineups of identical classic cars, the winner of which has two specks of dust less than the runner-up, or one more original screw...
Believe it or not, flares were a factory option (even with the original 14" wheels). The "flares and chairs" cars (flares and Daytona style seats) are worth a large premium because of their rarity. I agree with you 100% though, the flares are ugly and ruin the lines of the Dino. I doubt the flares on this car are factory, but they look similar to the factory flares (both are ugly, in my opinion, even though original flare cars are worth a premium).
I did not know that! Interesting. Still, I really don't think they fit, and I would never have done that myself. The 246 basic shape is just so perfect, why mess with it? I understand the engine part, although I probably also would not have done that. I do like the larger Campagnolos, but only if the fenders don't need messing with.
Great vid Jack. I actually think the wheels are OK. They could be a different and darker colour perhaps. Gold is a faux pas of the highest order and should only be seen on Scoobs and Clio Williams of yore. 😝
Thanks Chris.. I agree on the wheels.. to be honest even on my Scooby I'd rather they were silver..
Yeah, the car loses its originality and therefore its astronomical value, but you only live once. I'd feel extremely special in this glorious machine! Money isn't everything...
name of the music?
Most of it, yes. Wheels make me feel a bit sick. If they are being changed, then yes again.!
That Maserati v8 from the 3200 gt would be a nice fit.
Ferraris are one of the most perfect machine, all around, at all times. When you bore its cylinder head, the block walls, will be thinner. Only those who don`t have de money to buy a new Ferrari, do it.
I m totally ok to see cars like the dino restomoded... now if i see something like that on a gto or a miura i will sceam. The black american one looks stunning.
Awesome cars! Like a Singer but done Prancing Horse style.
Yep.. cool bit of engineering!
Nice idea, but the power and performance gains come at the expense of that lovely V6 sound. At best, the Ferrari V8's just sound hooligan-ish and tinny in comparison. I had a Fiat Dino 2.4 coupe for many years. It was only moderately quick, but when you boot that 2.4 V6 up to 7 thou and beyond, it sounds more like a 4.4 V12. The relative lack of power meant I didn't have to drive it like a lunatic to regularly get that buzz. One thing that's always struck me is that the Dino V6's have a very 'big' sound that's rich and sophisticated, especially lowdown, whereas the V8's, although bigger in capacity, always sound like a revvy 'small' engine . . . . the sort of sound that boy-racer types probably think is the dog's conkers, bless 'em. Good video though.
OHHHH how i wish i had one !! ill have to stick with my 74 Toyota Corolla Te27 ! and do some upgrades
performance vs. stock 328 gts?
Should be quicker.. has substantially more power and is lighter..
Beautiful car. Could have brought one many years ago for a song. But was full of rust and smoked. Maybe if those wheels were painted as per original colour, might improve the look. Just a thought.
My favourite car, not sure on the wheel colour or style, that aside, very interesting
Give her the beans man !!!
Love a good restomod, and why not do it to a Ferrari? The colour is beautiful. Wheels are a bit marmite, I agree, but I understand why they're there. Maybe he can put some of those new Campags onto it now?
I hope so!!
Looks horrific with modern wheels. Great car but please take
them off!
bob norwood made a v8 308 2v turbo dino in the 90s.... and now we just re vamped it with a 308 forged 4v block and new air to water intercooled tial turbo set up aiming for 550+hp dont believe me???look at it on instagram turbojunky288gto
Well, I don't like these wheels and the taillights have always been a bit blah but, IMO, the Dino is one of the most beautiful cars ever made. I spent hours in the lot at the Ferrari dealership in Monterey CA when I was a youngster.
obvi•US I bet you did.. happy memories of youth I bet!! Would love to have seen these in period!
Yeah... Which reminds me of a neighbor who had a DeTomaso Mangusta. Another BEAUTIFUL car!
Two amazing transformations, why have new, when you can have a reliable and useable classic, capital allowing that is.
Thanks Paul and I think you’re pretty much spot on!!
I think your DINO is the best car in the world.
Glad you like it buddy!! thanks for watching
The best Ferrari
Those wheelz
I know... thanks for watching buddy!
Nice car but change those wheels.
Still one of the most beautiful cars on the planet. When equipped with more modern technology, the better.
I love what he's done with this Dino. Who'd have thought you could shoehorn a V8 into one?!
I do think he's a brave man taking it to the Dino Reunion in Modena, though... He could get burnt at the stake...
ha!! indeed..
Andy Vepers... If it was a Corvette V8 shoehorned in... then yes.
But it stays 'Maranello' in most peoples eyes.
AT least now it has the power and handling to match the looks
That's the point Kev makes!! thanks for watching John
Hate to be a pedant but if its a Dino 246 then its not technically a Ferrari. Its a Dino which at the time it was sold was a separate brand
You need some better filming roads :)
I was already pissed for meatballs in spaghetti, but this...
Hahaha!! Meatballs in spaghetti do taste good though. Thanks for watching pekoro!
I'm surprised the 328 engine could fit in the Dino.
so was I.. but it does without any cutting..
Number27 - I have always thought that the Dino shares so many styling cues from the 365P (its wooden buck is shown in my latest video on the exhibition 'Ferrari Under the Skin). H
Beautiful Daytona seats, don't think any car manufacturer done a nicer seat ever, shame v6 noise is gone, makes up for lack of pace, 3.2 v8 fab engine drove 328 same day I picked up my 308qv and power difference amazing for 200cc jump over 308qv, sounds like good mods on engine .Guy who built car said wheels are like marmite, definitely NOT , Like putting Moustache on Cindy Crawford and saying it's like marmite love her or hate it look,
Hahahah!! She probably has a moustache at this age..
Lee is trying to sell a production run of 25 - 5 per year for the next 5 years.
interesting.. but it is Mototeqnique who actually built the car! David lee had them build the black one which admittedly is even better
The DINO was never supposed to be a leman winner. It’s a really fun exotic sports car for style and not speed.. A round about in strong fashion. I have said many times the the Alfa Romeo 4C is akin to the Dino... Alfisti.mn.co
no Ferrari badges
Yeah, the wheels on the American are much nicer. The way the American car is described, there is nothing wrong with any restomod if it's done that way, the car is original only once so a reversible restomod actually makes sense.
Yes agree with everything you said!! Thanks for watching
Nice car, but nowhere near david lees
Basically a c3 corvette lookalike-ish. It's nice though, and the vehicle is meant to be driven and enjoyed so I agree with you that improvements to the engine are OK. Especially when you're fixing poorly engineered fueling systems and that kind of thing. Also brakes and suspension upgrades improve safety a lot and it's important to be safe so f*ck keeping the car original.
Most people who complain about modifying classic cars have not owned one and driven one as a daily driver. If you drive it a lot or for long journeys then reliability, safety or even fuel economy are very justifiable reasons for modifying a classic car. Enjoy.
Glad you enjoyed it.. thanks for watching!
Should had brought a Ferrari 328.....
ummm.. maybe. This is quicker and if you love a Dino body...
I've seen one here in Australia, they are so low to the ground....
great car... great engine and sound... but the wheels OMG... put them rather on a Japanese car...
It's not a Ferrari Dino. There's no Ferrari badges on the car and Ferrari had intended Dino to be a stand alone marque like Acura is to Honda if Acuras were cheaper than Hondas. Which would make the car a 246GTS by Dino who happens to be owned by Ferrari. But just owned as the bodies were designed by Pininfarina and made by Scaglietti with the engine and final assembly by Fiat so there isn't much Ferrari in the original cars so I guess dropping in the 328 engine just makes it more Ferrari.
Brian Boni interesting perspective there Brian!!
Engine ,yes, wheels, definitely no,
The campagnolla or whatever wheels are ugly anyway even minilights look better I've never much liked the type of wheels often found on classic fiat's, lancia, alfas and alike
Quei cerchi non sono adatti
Sono d'accordo!!
貴重な車両の改造はちょっと…。
Those wheels are hideous.
It's a fiat and not a Ferrari lol.
I'm sorry...but I'm a purist....
Wheels sucks!
Gold wheels !!!! Are you kidding me !!!! They look gross and utterly tasteless, yes I know my opinion is subjective but I would imagine Enzo Ferrari firing his whole design team just for suggesting fitting such an abomination to a beautiful car !!
Wheels not to my taste either!
Im not a Purist, but I would would be ashamed for these awful rims...
It's a Dino, it is not a Ferrari.
Bastardising a classic should be a criminal offence. If you had ever heard a dino then you would never be satisfied with the hairdryer sound of this crap.
