Vintage Behind the Wheel: 1975 Ferrari Dino 308 GT4

  • The Dino 308 GT4 was low on the collector scale despite being groundbreaking for Ferrari as it was their first production car to feature a mid-engine V8, was the first Bertone design after a long line of curvy sexy Pininfarina creation and was the first Ferrari sold as new in the US. The name "Dino" came from Enzo Ferrari's only son, Alfredo or Alfredino to his family, on whom the legacy of the Ferrari name hung. Unfortunately, Dino had muscular dystrophy and passed away at age 24 and though the gesture of naming the car after him was touching it lead to confused customers and poor sales.
    Nearly forty years after it hit the States, we got a chance to chat with Mr. Anthony Rimicci about how he bought this car on accident, how the Dino badge has become cool again and what it's like to drive this icon.

    “Until you drive one, you really can’t comment on the car”
    Great quote that applies not only to Ferrari but to every single car in the world.

    Really really wanted to hear that V8 sing. Opera was at least 50% too loud. I can hear that anytime. But the wail of a mid-70's Ferrari? AMAZING!

      @BradfordtheEclectic 8 месяцев назад +1

      Yeah, a little too artsy. Wasn't really for car guys as this treatment omits the exhaust note which is vital information about the conduct of the car as well as THE MUSIC car guys want to hear.

    I just love the Italian spirit of the whole presentation, especially the interviewed driver who tells his personal story with his phantastic 308GT4 (a masterpiece, to place 4 seats PLUS a V8 engine between the axles! And still make the look clean, nice, and beautiful!).
    Italian way of life is always SO heartful, enthusiastic, emotional.. I´m just LOVING it!
    PS. The music - though Italian, too - should have been paused (or at least turned much quieter) for the driving moments to hear the pure sound of this car and its engine...

    I have a 1978 308 gt4, chassis number 13838, its a beautiful car to drive and sounds awesome... That's why I don't understand the music on this video? The noise of the V8 is much nicer :)

    A great video carefully outling the history of this v8 308 Ferrari.

    Enzo Ferrari commisioned and was intimately involved in the development of the GT4, it was not originally another design on Bertone's part. Enzo Ferrari himself actually drove a test mule home and, for instance, made suggestions for the driving position, gear shifter, and clutch pressure, and reported back to Bertone. It is a wonderful, unique car. Doesn't have the "low inertial moment" of the 246 Dino, and this car is the not the successor of the 246, the 308 GTB is. The NASA control panel dash in the coolest. Bertone had a cool that was very edgy, literally. They designed the very first wedge car, the Bertone Carabo.

  • @dcuppie
    @dcuppie 9 лет назад +1

    Thanks for sharing. I've always loved these cars. I'm a child of the '70s, so the wedge cars really appeal to me, e.g. Lotus Esprit, Lamborghini Countach, Dino 308GT4 (of course), etc. I hope to own one someday before they get too pricey.

    It was very nearly the Lamborghini Uracco. Ferrucio Lamborghini commissioned Bertoni to design the car and they came up with 2 prototypes. Ferrucio chose the other one and Ferrari took up the option for this one afterwards.

      You're right... the V8 in the GTB4 is just effortless. I got stopped a few years ago, driving a '79 308GTB4 home from work. The road I was on crossed a busier rural highway so I had to wait for the cross-traffic. Across from me, several other cars also waited for their break in traffic to get moving. My break came; I crossed the highway behind a small station wagon and had to putter along until we both passed the line of cars heading the other way. As we passed the end of that line, I jumped out and laid on the throttle, ran it up through the gears, and played through a couple of miles of crooked curves. The sound was spectacular!! The road ran for a couple of narrow miles to a T-intersection and I made the right to continue toward home. I was routinely checking the mirrors as I typically did and noticed a California Highway Patrol car come flying up the that same stop and make the turn to follow me.
      He pulled me over and asked were was I going/what was I doing/La-La-La..... I told him I worked for the dealership that was selling the car and I was taking advertising pictures for them ( I even had my camera gear in the back seat!). He asked how fast I was going. My reply was, "I'm not sure but I was never going faster than was safe for the conditions. His reply was, "when you passed that little wagon, all I saw was tailpipes!!!" He was in that line of waiting cars going the other way. He didn't see anything but those pipes just sounded wonderful and he certainly heard them clearly! I've always wondered if he remembered that day as clearly as I did. He just gave me a warning and went on his way.
