I think a lot of people tend to forget that shows like Digimon, Pokemon and Yu-Gi-Oh were anime and not cartoons because the english dubs were _heavily_ censored (especially Digimon and Yu-Gi-Oh). Effectively they were tuned down to more cartoony levels.
Some of the deaths in Yu-Gi-Oh and Digimon are pretty horrible to be honest even for an adult.

As a side note, just so you know, the english versions tend to censor a lot, at least early on.
And though Sevens and Go Rush get kiddier, their duels are still bad ass, especially the monsters.
And Zexal, despite lighter start, gets surprisingly dark.

    yes.
one is 5D's- as in 5 Dragons,
and the other is Vrains- as in VR like you guessed.
my favorite character in all of Yugioh is called Soulburner- from the Vrains series.

in GX, the first episode is called the next king of games where the main character Jaden Yuki bumps into Yugi Muto (main character from the original series) and he gives Jaden one of his cards where Jaden is later to communicate with the spirit of this card and the series ends with a duel between Yugi and Jaden.
5D's refers to the 5 Dragon Signers who together can control the legendary Crimson Dragon monster. They are:
    Yusei Fudo (Main Character)
    Jack Atlas (Main Rival)
    Crow Hogan (Best Friend)
    Akiza Izinski (Female Lead)
Luna (little girl who can talk to duel spirits)
I have not watched all of the Yu-Gi-Oh series yet, but out the ones that I have watched so far only 7 characters stand out for me. They are:
    1. Jaden Yuki (Main character from GX)
    2. Jesse Anderson (Best Friend from GX season 3)
    3. Yuya Sakaki (Main character from Arc-V)
    4. Alexis Rhodes (Female Lead from GX)
    5. Zuzu Boyle (Female Lead from Arc-V)
    6. Ghost Gal (Female Hacker from Vrains)
    7. Joey Wheeler (Best Friend from Original)

1 Zexal. Its crazy, easy to follow, and has some of the most outrageous numbers youll see in Lp or Attack
    2. 5ds. Much more adult, even some dark themes like mass murder are uncensored and the story buildup is very fun

I'm 26 and started watching when I was about 6. My favorite series is 5ds, though I think the GX protagonist (Jaden/Judai) is my favorite protag. I will say, no matter how "kiddie" any given series looks, things get very serious at some point in the series, though toned down in the dubs to be more kid-friendly.
By the way, the Japanese intros might be worth a watch even if you have no intentions of watching the series subbed, cause they have some real great songs

Bit of a wall of text to answer some of your questions:
In terms of continuality, it does get fuzzy in places after 5Ds. But GX and 5Ds are definitely direct sequel. GX takes place at Duel Academy. A massive boarding school founded by Seto Kaiba to solely teach kids card games. 5Ds takes place in the future sometime after GX. Also, one of the recurring minor characters is in fact the bully the Yugi that best him up as stood up to him to protect Joey and Tristan. There is also a movie where all 3 of the main protagonists team up.
For 5Ds, it is believed to stand for 5 Dragons. Each of the protagonists are one of the chosen ones with Dragon Birthmark, that corresponds with their dragon, which also serves as their signature or ace monster.
As for Zexal, the correct pronunciation is supposed to be Zeal, with the X being silent like in Hunter x Hunter. But the incorrect pronunciation kind of stuck with the English audience. And the glowly, fairy, ghost guy you see is Astral. He's the spirit companion to the main protagonist. He's an interdimensional spirit who lost his memories, as they that got split up into pieces. With each part, of course, also being a card.
Vrains, is in fact, virtual reality. You can kind of say it is Isekai in a way since that virtual world is an actual parallel universe they go in and out of regularly.
As for Sevens, that anime and the current one airing in Japan, Go Rush, focus around the spin off game, Rush Duel. That's why it has an entirely different look.

Episode 1 of GX has Yugi in it, and Jaden duels Yugi in season 4 (subbed only because 4Kids deemed it too dark) and Bonds Beyond Time is Anime canon and has Yusei, Jaden, and Yugi working together through time travel and Joey makes a cameo in 5D's

I highly recommend reacting to the japanese openings as well. In most cases they are better than the english ones and they depict the tone of the series better.
    Take GX as example:
The first opening is high energy and fun, like the first season. But after, the openings start to get more series and kinda sad in tone, fitting to the later seasons.
The visuals are also better, in my opinion 😁

5:32 Well, a couple of years ago they released a card called Ten Thousand Dragon to celebrate the milestone of 10,000 cards in the OCG (Japan's version of TCG). It's super rare and can cost between $750 to $3200 at this time.
7:40 Not really. There is a bit more focus on fusion monsters, but it is still mostly the same. The game itself didn't receive any massive changes until the 5Ds era, which introduced Synchro Summoning. This was followed by ZEXEL introducing Xyz, Arc-V introducing Pendulum, and VRAINS introducing Link.

I’m I guarantee you that GX is not child targeted. Yes early on, there’s quite a lot of more normal friendly duels or school type shenanigans but there’s plenty of dark situations that show up. In fact the fourth season, which never got dubbed, is very dark as is part of the third season.
ZEXAL also had plenty of dark parts.
Basically each Yu-Gi-Oh series even if it looks child targeted is more than meets the eye. I haven’t seen Arc-V but the fans of that series talk about how dark it gets a lot.
To answer you question about the timeline, it is agreed mainly that the original series to ZEXAL are all on the same timeline with Arc-V probably also falling on the same timeline. But then things happen, and the three series after are on a different timeline.

DM #1 - the Duelist Kingdom tournament with the flamboyant Pegasus villain most people know of.
DM #2 - the Battle City tournament arc - the first part...thanks, filler - that most people know of, with the duel disks and actual rules from this point forward
DM #3 - the gang gets lost in virtual reality by a kid in upsetting shorts who suspiciously resembles Kaiba from season 0. Also his minions the board of directors that conspired with Pegasus to kill Kaiba in season 1.
DM #4 - Battle City resolves.
DM #5 - the main plot derails because a cult leader of motorbike enthusiasts and a fascination with magic rocks wanted screen time. Most polarizing filler arc in history.
DM #6 - yet another tournament. German diva business mogul also wants arbitrary revenge on Kaiba.
DM #7 - whoops, forgot the one that covers the final arc; nvm. This dub opening is noteworthy for actually having sound effects.
GX #1 - This show's like Gundam or Star Trek, wherein each show has a different cast and may or may not involve past characters, settings, or even the same universe. In this case, a boarding school for dueling - which if you knew the real-life game at all, you'd agree such an institution might be a necessity - with our main character being a bit more of a typical shonen protag. Also the plot recycles a fair bit; coasts on fanservice for the first show a smidgen.
GX #2 - things get more original, and with it more complicated, weirder, and darker in places. Also a space cult.
GX #3 - as much as the dub tries to cover it up, this is one of the biggest tonal shifts in anime history for the show on the whole. The protag gets a totally-not-boyfriend-you-guys, and has a bit of an ongoing existential crisis when he's lost in another dimension. Hope he doesn't do something drastic.
GX #4 - doesn't exist! a whole season where the Grim Reaper causes the apocalypse by way of mass depression never got dubbed!
5D's #1 - cyberpunk remains of the original hometown. Main character and rival grew up in poverty, the latter sold out their old friends and became rich in the upper tiers of the dystopia. They and a few other people develop marks tied to Incan religion that conjures a giant scarlet wyrm.
Addendum - what does "5D's" actually mean? "Five Dragons" is the best hypothesis, which is regretfully ruined by some poorly thought-out retcons and lack of focus.
5D's #2 - said giant scarlet wyrm - "Crimson Dragon" - opposes demons imprisoned deep in earth. That's what the Nazca lines are. Also the minions are a bunch of dead guys.
5D's #3 - the previous plot directions take a back seat to cyborgs from the future trying and failing to stop robot apocalypse. Also trading cards may be a source of perpetual energy.
5D's #4-#5 - also doesn't really exist in the dub. The 5D's dub is totes screwed-up from what it ignores.
Zexal #1 - seen by many as a franchise soft-reboot. By far the one with the most ridiculous character designs; possibly because the original creator had barely any involvement in even that much by this point. All based around - at first - chasing cards that are each pieces of an alien's memory who crashed into Earth from his astral plane that's totally-not-Heaven-you-guys and now exists as a ghost that only the main protag can see, at first.
    Addendum - "ZAY-ahl", actually.
Zexal #2-#3 - in the original, too, this show was separated into "Zexal" and "Zexal II". Hypotheses for this vary. Totally-not-Hell-you-guys attacks; turns out seven characters amongst humans, including many we know, including a prominent rival, are Barian World's reincarnated Emperors. Also the universe began with a card, and life on Earth came to be because a dragon cried.
Addendum - it's largely assumed to still be in-continuity, but theories are disputed to this day. It's generally assumed the first two shows are in the same continuity, at least, or it's just flat out its own show. The next one confuses things more.
Arc-V #1 - starts off with a main protag interested in being basically a circus performer as well as a duelist. The Four Dimensions lived in harmony. Then everything changed when the Fusion Dimension attacked.
Arc-V #2-#6 - You're really better off not looking into more. It's not well-liked by everyone who didn't watch the show first, and for good f$%!ing reason.
Vrains #1-#3 - totally-not-the-Matrix-you-guys! Also, need to win? Just reach into a cyber tornado while hoverboarding and use the plot device you pull from there. Also AI companions seek world destruction, also decks totally primed to win based on all tournament results in real life consistently fail.
Sevens #1 - a REAL reboot for the anime part of the franchise, first new art style since Studio Gallop got the manga adaptation rights in '99, and even shilling a new game, tho one that's obviously very closely related to the original cards. Very popular amongst its target audience in OCG regions, STILL has not seen physical print outside of east Asia even for the entire show being dubbed - in English, at least - and it seems like outside of the mobile game Duel Links, it never will be.
    - oh right, the characters and plot. A main protag is an inventor, develops the new format, and makes some friends. Fellow kids connected to a megacorp in their own ways try to hijack his efforts or stop him, for reasons. Eventually ends in a giant robot fight in lunar orbit. May also involve aliens; unclear as to the full extent of the next show's implications on this one, nor is it clear what those weird yellow gimmick girls are that also claim to be subterranean, time-traveling, deepsea civilication, ghost trucks, and I don't even know.
After this some day will be Go Rush. Tons of characters that evoke ones from Sevens, and ones that don't are usually aliens, that usually evoke various folklore creatures. Time-travel, space, and creator angst all occur with frequency.

Of the yugioh series, I'd say that Sevens and Go Rush definitely go for a younger audience, but they still have dark moments. If I'm being honest, I prefer when they have a more darker go for it. But, there's still good moments in those two, and still love the duels, even if the rest of the story for Sevens and Go Rush are a lot lighter... well, Go Rush is getting darker recently as it goes.

My brother taught me into this game when I was only 3 or 4 and was the first game tcg, serie I watched and played as a kid and my first school was crazy about it. Every single kid had yugioh and we had a two tables outside the halls were we gathered to trade and look into cards. My favorite character I mean I love Yami Yugi he looks super cool when he transform and give Kaiba of all people shock like "What just happened to you?" I do also love GX Jaden in season 4 is hella cool. My favorite monster tho is Black Luster Soldier as it was such a cool monster and when Yugi summon it against Mai. chills just grew inside me. My fave Yugioh deck rn are the Gem-Knights they are super easy to use tbh and all about fusion summon, little link and xyz but no hard. ^^ Yu-Gi-Oh King of Game. King of 4Kids and King of Anime!

If you react to Yugioh, it has to be sub. They censored SO MUCH! The shadow realm didn’t even exist in the original Japanese version, people just died or were sent to hell. Not to mention the manga is even darker & different than the Japanese anime. Plus there’s season 0 where Yugi first built the millennium puzzle & Yami was playing shadow games of mental life or death against literal criminals. & ironically, Arc-V is the darkest season of Yugioh. & there is one more series that doesn’t have English openings. It literally takes place in space with aliens. The main character is an alien prince.

If I remember correctly: Yuma, the protagonist from Zexal, is the most disliked protagonist out of them all. Though Pendelum Monsters are some of the most hated monsters because of the rulings they caused to be implemented during one of the worst formats in the series, Master Rule 4. So Arc V catches some flak from that.

Do not judge Yugioh Arc-V because it's so colorful. The protagonist, Yuya, wants to be a great duelist and performer like his dad. But the show gets deep with traveling to other dimensions and mind controlling insects.

I'm currently watching through the yugioh series and I've just started 5Ds. GX does feel a little more "child-friendly" at first but it gets super dark in the later seasons to the point where the main character is basically traumatized.
5Ds seems promising, but I am the most apprehensive about ZeXal. It doesn't seem like I'd enjoy it too much but some people say it's good so I'll give it a shot.
Arc-V could go either way I think but I'm leaning towards being excited for it since I know most of the characters through the games.
I am super hyped for VRAINS, partly because one of the characters there uses my favorite deck. I've seen a couple episodes from it already and it looks really good.
Finally, there's Sevens and Go Rush. Rush Duel is basically a reboot/reimagining of yugioh with simplified rules that encourage fast paced back-and-forth gameplay. However the anime does seem a little more on the childish side. If I still crave more yugioh after VRAINS I'll consider giving it a go.

Gx, zexal, and arc v are the types of shows with happy go lucky protagonists and happy go lucky slice of life plots that slowly (or sometimes quickly) descend into hell dimensions, serial killers, military invasions, mass murder, deep depression, and demons possessing the corpses of children after a few arcs of relative happiness.

This is going to be strange to say but I felt like GX had far more at stake on a day to day basis then the original. I mean the mc had to relearn how to duel for fun again because he had been dueling for his life for so long and the lives of others. Not to say other mc's didn't experience that too but Jaden from GX just feels like he went through so much more personally.

gx and 5d were pretty good. for better or worse the company got cheap and never finished translating the rest of the remaining ep, thought the Japanese sub was better anyway. zexal, arc v, and vrains were ok at best. afterword it wasn't worth mentioning.
