  • Belgian Pale Ale is the second beer in this round of our Jar of Destiny series.
Jar of Destiny, where we pick a random style every 3 months and we research and brew a recipe at the will of the jar, has delivered yet again another style we might not regularly try and brew.
This beer was 83% Belgian Pale malt and 17% Caravienne malt. This beer poured a deep orange with a nice fluffy head.
The aroma was ester and bread malt forward. There was very mild Belgian like clove/phenol character; which we appreciated.
The flavor was more bread and a touch of hop spiciness. Hard to pull apart the hop character from the yeast character. Not a surprise as this is what you'd expect from a Belgian style ale.
We both found this one drinkable and interesting to sip and tease out the flavor profiles. An enjoyable round for a style I wouldn't necessarily be inspired to brew.
    Cheers!

Looks tasty! One of my favorite styles! DeKonninck (DK) is the quintessential; the pride of Antwerp. They have a great brewery tour/experience. There should be virtually no Belgian yeast character, almost lager like. Olympic Yeast Labs-049 is the DK strain. Special B really helps make the beer. Thanks Dudes!

That beer looks delicious. A buddy of mine turned me on to WLP575 for belgians PAs, to me that's always the best choice for yeast

Well done Mike, glad you enjoyed this beer. Brewing Belgians can be a lot of fun. Brewed the Dark Saison in the Craft Beer & Brewing magazine today with a bit of a twist. Going to use oak spirals soaked in Rum. Congrats on your beer. Looks like both of you liked it.

I love these "cara" malts. Color + character of the malt. Nice work dudes.
