    Pearl is the perfect example of why free speech is important. If you shut people down before they speak, you'll never give them the opportunity to expose themselves.

    • @mercb3ast
      @mercb3ast Год назад +329

      The problem is, many people don't understand what free speech is. People advocating for it on the right, usually don't actually want free speech. They want protected speech.
      The difference between free speech and protected speech is, free speech is not free from consequence. Protected speech is.
      AKA, fuck around, find out.

      Free speech is protected speech.. and what consequences are you talking about? Legal? Social?
      If someone says something stupid or offensive and lose their audience socially or people exclude them from the public square socially, then yeah i agree.. but if someone says something stupid or offensive, they shouldnt be criminalised for it.

Just because you have not lived through something or experienced it personally doesn't mean you can't learn about it. I don't know s*** about helicopters but I know the one that Kobe was on, wasn't a good one. You don't have to experience something in order to talk about it. I don't know what it's like to be shot I can still learn what the bullet velocity is. The damage on impact. The likelihood of survival. All without experiencing it myself. So if you hate somebody go ahead and say it. Just out of curiosity do you think meth is bad? Because under your logic you wouldn't know if it is or not unless you tried it.

      I do kinda agree that slavery tends to be over-embellished to some degree. Ill be in conversation with people and they'll say slaves couldn't read or write and I'd say that some house slaves or slaves that managed other slaves did. They will get defensive immediately and try to act like I'm trying to defend slavery when in reality I'm just correcting the misinformation they are spreading. Another example is id hear from multiple sources that slaves worked 20 hours every day, were not fed while working and had to work every day of the week, but in actuality, slaves most likely worked 13 hours with a 30 minute breakfast and dinner break, plus slaves never worked on Sundays and were allowed to go to church.
      We all know slavery is a horrible thing, that's absolutely correct, but at the same time some people can make it sound worse than what it actually is. This isn't me saying it was a good thing, just that people over-embellish a bit.

    As a young child I always begged my mom to leave my dad. She was too nice to others. Always helping others but herself. My Dad was an intelligent, wise and narcissistic human! He would beat her, force her to do things and abused all the girls after we turn 10. My mother warned me not to talk back to him because I was getting old enough for him to beat me. She always thought he would change, because he wasn't like this when they first married. He actually got worse after she went through stage 4 cancer. She finally left him. I got to see my mother live the best 3 months of her life before she died. I had mixed emotions when she passed. She prepared me for her death. I was happy that she had a chance to live a peaceful life in the end. Unfortunately, the courts sent us back to live with our father. I had to fight him mostly everyday and Child protective services or police never did anything about it. I always asked my Dad why didnt he leave our family like he left his other wife and children.

      (EDIT): I went back and re-read the section of the book, and I had mistakenly got it mixed up with one of his other books.
      The book in question is "Conquests and Cultures" and examines how specific cultural traits have identifiable effects on the history of those people. The section she's quoting is specifically about the history of slavery in the world, and how many Americans have a narrow understanding of it based only on our country's history. Sowell wasn't saying that ROOTS exaggerated the brutality or cruelty of slavery. He was just saying that he disliked how the showrunner chose to write a "myth" about certain _other_ details, specifically the process by which enslaved people were kidnapped and sold.
      After reading it again there is _definitely_ nothing in there about slavery being exaggerated.
      (ORIGINAL)
      I would say his beliefs are that the impact of slavery on their culture today is misunderstood and leaves out other influences. This misunderstanding has implanted the idea that black identity is entirely about being the descendants of slaves, which ignores other factors and has negatively influenced the ability for many African Americans to find success.
