As a therapist, the normalization of mental illness is draining. Everyone is biologically designed to experience anxiety, depression, anger, changes in mood, and many other symptoms as a means of survival. People need to stop thinking that they have a severe mental illness when it's a normalized response to an identifiable trigger. Not everyone needs therapy, but everyone does need to know how to cope.

@beanicehuman the only time I feel like like testing/therapy is a must is when it comes to people having children. Many people have children that are not at that point in life and need to make sure they are mentally able to handle the pressure of having a child. This is from looking at the highly flawed systems. I have a M.A. in Clinical mental health counseling.

I’m African and when I was in high school everyone had to do mandatory 2 sports and a club(debate, drama, chess etc…) after classes per year. This created comradery and no one was ever left behind. This led to school pride and pride in one’s self and one’s achievements (played rugby for my country). It eliminated staying at home and stewing on things unnecessarily cos you had outlets. By 5PM when your parents were done with work you’re exhausted. Your parents take you home and you were ready to crash. That routine did wonders for me and all my peers. Self deletion and violence were not a thing at all. So they lie to their therapists and get told what they want to hear, and they've just become 100x more toxic as a result. Therapy is literally encouraging these type of toxic and manipulative people but no one is talking about that, because they are all the ones going to therapy and claiming how great it is because their therapist believes all their manipulative BS and makes them feel good about themselves for no real reasons.

I think therapy easily borders on becomong a lifelong crutch for people to consistently vent their problems and offset them for a week at a time rather than working through them.
I believe individuality is born through personal struggle, the concept of "pressure creates diamonds" and if any human is constantly venting off that personal steam they aren't working towards becoming the next phase of themself through their continued struggles. Not to say this is the truth for all, but theres clearly an over reliance on leaning into your illnesses to appear special rather than overcoming them and actualing becoming a grander version of oneself

The craziest part of the whole therapy discourse to me is that most people don't even understand that therapy isn't really intended to be permanent. Ideally, you're supposed to graduate from therapy once you've learned all the tools the doctor provides and properly implement them in your life. I graduated in psychology way before all this hyper-therapy-popularity came up. And the one thing we were taught is that someone can't stay in therapy for long. At some point as a therapist you have to give that person resources to possibly transfer them to a different therapist who may be better suited to their problem. Which means you can't indefinitely stay.
In the western culture, it's like a permanent state. It's totally ok to be "broken" for years. I used therapy when no other resource of my own was helping me get through an issue. I got the assistance I needed for my issue and now I am able to manage on with my own resources and mental equipment should the same struggle rise again. I am for therapy/mental health - but I'm heavily against "the permanent state of therapy". I assure you, of you keep going to the therapist for years, your therapist is just in it for the money from you.

The everyone needs therapy happened to my nephew. In high school in health class, two designated female students told the other students that everyone with a mental health issue go to one side of the room. And those that don't go to the other. My nephew was the only one that didn't go to the side of having a mental health problem. The two students were aghast and told him that it wasn't possible and started to bully him. His stated he didn't have any depression, anxiety, or any other mental health diagnosis. They told him what do you do when you're sad? His response was " sadness doesn't necessarily equate to depression and if I'm down I have outlets like sports, family, or I pray (I'm not religious but he finds comfort in his)."
During covid when a lot of child did start to show signs of mental health distress he was the kid who took up new hobbies and transferred his discomfort into something new. My issue with everyone making mental health a trendy thing seems to devalue the needs of those who actually may have severe triggers or trauma. A lot of my own anxiety and depression I have has been something that I've worked out with a therapist, friends and being retrospective but I'm a different person than my nephew and I wish I had the tenacity that kid has. he does his own thing.

But my uncle is tough, when other people probaly already break and give up long time ago, he keeps fighting and moving on while diagnosed with depression.
He is okay now, new job, new wife (then 3 kids), and new house.
When I asked how he went thru all of that, he answered, "I submit to God, asked Him to give me the strenght, and I let go." Then I understand, it's a leap of faith. Our job is simply just don't give up, and let God take care the rest.

I wasn’t allowed to go there that night. I asked around and I’m couch surfing and trying to figure out what to do. Once I started counting my blessing w/ my friends and family. I hit a deer on the highway one night coming back from a friends place. I don’t have a car now. I’m alive, but I know I can’t just go talk to a therapist about this because I don’t have the income. All I can do is wait. Find a work around for myself and survive until I get ready to deploy. I’m not active duty either so I don’t have any real safety nets anywhere. We all have different struggles but it’s always up to you as an individual to keep moving and to keep learning from everything you go through in life. I hope everyone is doing well here and if anyone wants to vent or talk about something I’m here! We can chat on discord if you guys need to get something off your chest.

Stop giving a shit about what others think or say and build your world view on the simple strong foundations that society used to have when mental health wasn't such an issue. Things like family, community, and touching grass. Spend less time on social media and comparing yourself to fake people you see online.

The reason mental health has become such a talked about topic is because the medical field has finally caught up to it. Back then if you were suicidal Doctors would have chalked it down to a physical issue rather than a mental one. You aren't wrong though, social media is a fucking cancer. That's why I stopped watching RUclips shorts, because I felt like my brain was turning into a slushy. I feel as though social media is distracting people from having person to person interactions which would help with mental health. Everything about our culture should make people unwell. So in a lot of ways I'm surprised it's not worse. I don’t see her often, but I’m more comfortable venting to a stranger then I am dumping all my problems on the people around me. PS I’m so sorry that happened to you, I hope you find some Justice in what happened to you.

I agree with Youssef, as someone who constantly goes into nature to heal and get away from it all you don't have to be online or in person talking to a therapist. Gardening can be your therapy, hiking and exploring nature can be as well. There are so many health benefits to just being in nature especially if you go barefoot in the dirt. Plus in gardening alone there are so many lessons you can learn like consistency with watering and weeding. With weeding it reminds you to remove people or things from you life that are there to steal nutrients. With adding produce scraps and egg shells to put nutrients in sometimes the lowly viewed things can breathe life into you.

As a therapist myself, I would say everyone should be OPEN to therapy, but not that everyone NEEDS it. It's not for everybody and that's okay. Sometimes therapy is just about learning healthy coping mechanisms to deal with life stressors. Or even just to learn about about what you may be going through (disorders, symptoms, problematic patterns of behavior, etc.). Other times it can be about helping to heal trauma. But therapy is definitely not the end all be all of mental health.
This is not even to mention that some therapists are absolutely awful at their jobs and can do more harm than good.

I grew up with a sense of thinking that if you did have mental health issues (or any emotional problems) that you were weak, not a man, looking for attention etc. (And I used to actually shame people for it too, maybe i was subconsciously trying to make myself believe that shit but idk) And that was definitely a factor but the other big factor was so many peers on the internet and in school mentioned so casually how they have depression and/or anxiety but they functioned so well everyday, had lots of friends, and went to parties held part time jobs, actually took part in school activities. It made me think that i was too weak for the problems i was having. But keeping shit like that to yourself really wears down the body and mind and at least for me, stole my childhood years from me. That being said, if you don't have anything that is seriously troubling you, youre not going to get anything out of a therapy session. Therapy really is for when you are falling into negative habitual behaviors, or chronically experiencing emotions that are out of control. You don't need it if you can work through it in other ways.

It's not unlike people finding cliques and tribalistic groups in any other facet of life. You're a jock, you're an intellectual bookwork, etc etc....they found some sort of meaning and identity in therapy and now thei life revolves around it. I see it all the time these day. People looking for meaning and their place in life, only to misplace it in the process. It's mentally draining to try and navigate with these people. Especially the last generation who seems OBSESSED with freaking out over every bit of anxiety, or stress in their lives, even though humans will ALWAYS struggle with these things.
Many people can benefit from therapy (not just tooting my own horn), but not everyone NEEDS to be in therapy. Therapy can take many forms, and reality "therapy" is simply an outside perspective meant to give someone a helping hand. Not the some guru who opens up your life. A family member who is older and wiser than you can give a form of therapy, as can many other things in life. Sometimes a psychologist is needed when you're in too deep and need someone who specializes in navigating some of these issues. I try as hard as I can to do as little harm to others as possible. When someone says they are depressed because they're a little bummed out it diminishes what I go through, and people take my depressive episodes (which are awful and I can't help it when it happens) way too lightly.

The whole experience for me felt repetitive because I realized all the answers were already in front of me and that I didn’t have to REALLY go to therapy, it just helped open my eyes and gave me a pathway to better myself. It’s annoying seeing so many people flex they are in therapy because a lot of the times (like others have commented) they don’t even need it. If people changed their diet, changed the media and news they digested and were more social, I’m sure a lot more people would not need therapy.

I find it so hilarious when people say everyone needs therapy, yet they don't accept the different forms of therapy. I used to work in Social Service Work and amongst many therapists. The people in the field are a lot more diverse than before, and are the first to admit, that conventional therapy doesn't work for everyone. One of the primary questions asked is about channeling emotions or dealing with difficult thoughts and situations... Many of the suggestions are expressing self through Art (which for a long time wasn't considered a form of therapy, until they were forced to recognize the successful impact it had), journaling, finding places that bring you peace (ie. Nature), and most importantly through discussion with someone you're comfortable with. The worry with regards to opening up/discussing certain things is that you and the person speaking, have to know how far to go, or it can be harmful to the person opening up. It takes time and patience. This notion that everyone needs therapy is true, but at different stages and in different forms. I hope that people can stop forcing it on others and then dismissing them because they don't find a need for it at the moment, because guess what, that leads to harming someone.

To empathize with someone means that you have actually experienced something similar to them, thus you can understand what they are going through. To sympathize with someone means that most likely you haven't experienced what they experienced but you still can understand why they may feel or do the things do because of whatever happened; can also call it pitying someone. Now someone who claims to be an empath is someone can take someone's else emotions and go through those same emotions. Like think of when you are with someone for long time and start talking in similar way that they talk. Empaths take on the emotions of other people, so if someone is sad they will be sad and so on...

For self esteem she gives me journaling prompts and we do affirmations together. She also talks me through scenarios I bring up to her that highlight my self esteem issues and she gives me her perspective so I can think about myself and my actions in more positive way. Someone like me needs a therapist that has certain specializations and training. However, none of that matters if they aren’t also capable of being blunt and honest with me, like I make explicitly clear during our test session, and also “in the know” when it comes to modern problems the younger generation faces. A Boomer that bluntly gives Boomer advice is not going to help me. A Millennial that pussyfoots about giving me relevant advice is not going to help me. • @hatman4818
      @hatman4818 Год назад +2

Well... Another part of the problem is the misconception that "therapy" is the same thing as going to a therapist. It isnt. Therapy simply means a process of healing. Therapists are only necessary when the patient literally doesnt know how to do that themselves, and needs guidance from a professional.
It's like how a gym coach or physical trainer might know enough about their own body, that if they get injured, they might be able to self administer physical therapy, and get better without ever having to see a physical therapist... But someone who's out of shape, and doesnt understand their own body, might need one because they dont know how to heal the same injury.
Pretty much everyone "needs" mental therapy at some point in their lives, but that absolutely is not the same thing as this st@pid idea that everyone needs to GO to a therapist.
A healthy adult should be self aware enough, and know the bare minimum amount of psychology necessary to form coping strategies on their own to get through the tough times... Thats exactly what you did... And that could be referred to as self administered therapy.
Others are so far gone and so inept and self reflection that they need an actual therapist to help guide them.
      _____
Even people who go to therapists dont necessarily recieve therapy. Mental healing requires a huge amount of effort on the part of the patient, and a motivation to actually self improve.
Some narcissists and psychopaths use therapy and more acceptable mental health issues as a smoke screen, and convenient excuse for sh@tty behavior. These are people who want the victimhood of more sympathetic mental health issues, and the appearance of self improvement, while intending to pay a monthly fee to a therapist for the next 70 years with no intention of actually improving.
A good example, I dated this chick for a week who claimed to be autistic... But it felt off. I've been around autistic people a lot, and she didnt really seem like it. She was socially incompetent, but... Almost seemingly willfully cruel and carefree about it. In my experience, autistic people dont usually mean offense, usually arent very aware when they do say something off, and when someone informs them, theyre often remorseful about it, whether they understand their social faux pas or not.
What she told me later... And in hindsight, this is pretty disturbing... Apparently she was initially diagnosed with BPD (or, more in her words, "psychopathy"... But she was likely told BPD with the behaviors normally associated psychopathy in laymen vernacular. Psychopathy sociopathy arent really proper diagnoses, but their general behaviors fall under BPD). She felt that was a "misdiagnosis"... So she went to a different shrink who ALSO diagnosed her with BPD... Then she went to another... Then another... She said she went to literally 15 shrinks who all gave her a BPD diagnosis before finally finding one who gave her the "right" diagnosis of "autism".
... Is it just me, or does that sound more like finding out something about yourself that you really dont like, then brute forcing the medical system to get a more socially acceptable diagnosis? Misdiagnosis does happen... But really?... 15 shrinks conclude youre manipulative, and you claim the diagnosis of the 16th? And isnt learning what answers to actually give in "therapy" to get a shrink to give you that diagnosis... Isnt that a very untreated BPD thing to do?
And her behavior not long after that I began to realize was a lot more consistent with BPD. I've also been around a bunch of people who have that as well (usually on the recieving end of abusive relationships.... But also my best friend has it, but he's one of the few who's actually self aware about it and tries to manage it).
Among other things, she excused literally everything, from dominating conversation in our college class, to having zero filter with mostly negative things to say about and to others, to her "inability" to get a drivers license, with "autism". Theres a lot of behaviors I wont get into that screamed manipulator as well, but needless to say, I was done with her by the third date, and regretted even giving her that much patience.
This was a person who learned how to game the mental health system the more she engaged with it, to find a convenient excuse for sh@tty behavior, and have it literally justified by a professional. There literally wasnt any helping this person, given she was motivated enough to plow through expensive therapists to find one to change her diagnosis. How can anyone call what she was getting "therapy"? If she were really getting therapy out of it, she would have stopped at a second or third opinion, accepted she has BPD, and worked on managing it from that position.
And the worst part?... She was in school to become a therapist... To "help" people like her... Even though she practically went out of her way to make it clear to me she sees most people as objects.
Going to therapists isnt the same thing as therapy. Some creeps just go to better learn how to manipulate others.
Genuine therapy comes from within, ALWAYS. Sometimes that is done without any help (which is what you did, as a healthy self starter), and sometimes it's done with outside help (which is what people who grow after visiting a therapist do). But it ALWAYS comes from within. These morons who think going to a therapist in perpetuity IS therapy, are doomed to never improve their lives, because they see making a show of mental health as more important than actually improving ones mental being by any means necessary. Even for those who do need outside help, a good therapist should be aiming to ween you off of it with coping strategies and education on basic psychology and self reflection.
I think part of the problem is in the US, we have a for profit mental health and pharmaceutical system. Although some therapists are genuinely good at their jobs and genuinely try to heal their patients... There's actually far more financial incentive to resort to drugs first, and give half baked therapy so your patient has reason to see you regularly in perpetuity.

If you have never set foot in a gym, didn’t play sports growing up, and don’t have a friend group that will show you how to lift getting a personal trainer could be a good idea. Similarly if you didn’t learn how to process emotions, build relationships, and generally feel contented then you should consider a therapist.
