Before he died he said "If I die, I die as a happy man". I was at his funeral. It was the happiest funeral i've ever been to. Lots of fans and friends saying goodbye to him one last time, singing his songs and screaming some of his famous quotes, it was very touching. Rest In Peace Maestro, you will be remembered.

Agree, I came here thinking this was some kind of parody video for views, but turns out it's legit. I'm someone who suffers with some of the same stuff he does. I had a fall on my day job that first injured my neck, followed not long after by my first car wreck. Then find out I have spinal cord compression months before a second car wreck nearly paralyzed me from the neck down as I was sitting still and person hit us from behind going estimated 50mph. Lucky my head stayed attached as it ripped the power seat of my Land Rover out of the floorboard, that's how hard the impact was. Ever since then I'm a lot like this Benson guy. It sucks. Hard enough to type some days, let alone play the guitar. So I can sympathize with Mr. Benson greatly.

it must be difficult with all his ailments, especially mental health. I wonder if he has moments of clarity where he questions himself for trying to portray the rockstar that he clearly isn't.
i mean, you hear about Jason Becker. ALS took his ability and life as he knew it. the difference is, you don't see him *trying* to be a rockstar. He still composes great music using only the movement of his eyes. that's a rockstar-superhero-genius right there.

Richard died last week. I attended his funeral, which was filled with fans, love and speeches representing the many, many people he touched.
Richard Benson was a TV host on his own multiple shows, with a band and album knowledge second to none: countless people got to know guitarists and groups thanks to him, back when you didn't have internet privileges.
Additionally he had an astounding presentation energy, a great character and a greater heart.
He was the absolute master of entertaining and storytelling and an underground Rome icon.
And, history will teach you, Rome's underground is vast.
His stories, jokes and way of sayings were so good that they easily went viral once properly exposed to the internet.
He was my personal idol and, like many, I met him around in a few occasions. He was always kind.
Seeing a title like this at the top of his name search is sad, but if you're reading this then I want to tell you that what actually makes me sad is that I can't possibly convey to you, a non-Italian speaker, how great Richard was in so many different aspects, guitar aside.
You would have to listen to him for yourself...
This video is pretty much proof of that: slightly more than the most superficial knowledge a foreigner could gather. No offense! It's a shame.
The exaggerations on tv or the outlandish claims were always part of his character and brand. The stories about barack obama and marilyn manson, among the most recurrent ones, were just pure entertainment gold.
For me, no standup comedian, tv host or entertainer will ever come close.
    Thank you Richard! For everything!
And thank you, uploader, for bothering to scrape the surface of a greatness that me and myriads of other persons grew up with.
    Love,
    a fan

I grew up in Underground rock n roll in Bangladesh, i'd say like 3-4th degree away from OG's
      From what I understand
Richard Benson is a legend and a key figure in Italian Rock & Roll
      God bless !
I'm going to listen to all of his music now
I can kinda feel where you're coming from. It's the kind of thing where if I know Italian and/or lived there, I would understand even more where his heart is coming from.
We had a similar person, named Ayub Bacchu in Bangladesh
Roman underground sounds huge compared to our scene but he did some similar stuff for us also and became Bangladesh's first solo shredder guy also
Recently, he passed on around 2020/2021 I believe.
Thanks for sharing, I learned something new and in a way now feel nostalgic/sad/wishful

At 50, I get some arthritis in a couple of knuckles. Nothing with growths but a deep burning in the joints themselves. But luckily, I 'deep dived' hand and arm stretching (and hand massage) years ago. And followed it for 20 years (doing stretches/massage before+after playing .(and randomly, when I thought to).
imo, it keeps you flexible and strengthens the hand over time. It also staves off the effects of arthritis. And also allows you to learn a bit about the structure of the hand.
Allowing you to adjust things through gradual stretching and hand strength exercises.
      My theory on the stretching has been;
if you can separate the inflamed areas that are 'rubbing/pressing on one another (causing the arthritic pain). Over time (with finger stretching etc), they will remain separated. Causing the inflammation to subside and 'heal' (to a degree). Basically you stop the continual inflammation that leads to a more severe arthritic condition and the pain is removed (or relieved) because the previously inflamed areas are separated (allowing them time to heal)
Though I don't use them (yet) Cod liver oil and glucosamine are good supplements to take for Healy joints.
As is, eating chicken cartilage (the human body easily breaks this down, into components used in joint maintenance)
Squeezing a ball and using a light hand/wrist strengthener are beneficial too.
      On the playing side:
Reduce excessive finger movement (over time). So all fingers stay close to the strings ..all that excessive movement, helps wear the joints faster and is harder to maintain as you get older too (it can also lead to injuries like muscle pulls).
Learn to play 'without tension' in the body. Very much like some martial arts talk about.
There are classical guitar 'meditation' exercise worth mentioning. Attempt it over the 'long term', a goal ..if you will:
While you are playing, in your minds eye, scan around the inside of your body (in a circle).
Feeling for tense muscles and over tensed joints (the shoulders, are a classic for tension).
When you find tension, keep playing but attempt to relax the muscle/s you are 'thinking' about.
Once it relaxes, move your scanning on.
Aiming to remove all muscle tension (while playing) over time.
Keep your breathing relaxed and 'natural' (in and out). No holding breath or changing breathing rate from normal.
If anything, learn to slowly increase the depth of your breath (while keeping the body relaxed and breathing at normal speed).
There are various benefits from the above exercise.
      Enough words ;)
I hope there are a few things to gleam from all that.
      Peace.

I am an italian fan of Richard Benson and i must say that the video, despite showing research effort, does not catch the real attitude and story of this man, he laughed with who derided him, he is bold and intelligent and got a living from his shows, sometimes people acted with him as beasts, but the vast majority of his fanbase just laughed at his incredible actions and anger (often exaggerated but fully consciously displayed with the intent of entertaining from my point of view) and i should add that he clearly is not mentally ill, he is one of the most intelligent and self-conscious trash artist in italy. Now i wanted to point out some errors in your reconstruction:
    - About the "Cucciolo" song, the scene was prepared with him (it was aired in Rai1, wich is the biggest and state-owned TV channel, in the days following Sanremo's Festival) and it was repeated three times with a coherent gimmick-storyline
    - About the chicken he joked at it various times and liked recalling the event (if you start knowing his behaviour from his shows and tv programs you will understand that he clearly enjoys at least a part of his fanbase)
    - About the bridge story, i think it was a suicide attempt, also popularity (from my point of view) made his life much better and he often talked about the greatness of his fanbase proudly
    - It is documented that often the songs that he declared to be of his own were ripoffs or straight out songs of other artists (also international)
    - He clearly enjoyed his gimmick of metal king and had a culture of rock music never questioned by anyone
    - The live shows were unfortunately the only place where Benson got real hate (only in the late years that also are the ones of his big popularity) but i think he made the choice to to that because they were a big source of earnings when the local tv started dying and with them the chance for him to have a regular spot on television.
This said i think the italian community shows a big respect and often a speculative research about his misterious personality and a big part of it loves him as an idol that gave to his fanbase moments of exilarant fun. I also think he knows this and it was showed with the massive amount of support that he received with charity crowdfunding and Live Shows to help with his hearth medical conditions (i think partly caused by his age and weight). He later stated that he was in better form and it is evident from his last sparce appearence.
E.P. an Italian fan of this Heroic Trash figure.

I've been playing for almost 40 yrs now. I've played small clubs and been on the southern college circuit a couple yrs. But now I just play at home, write and record my own stuff, and jam with a few old friends. I began playing at the end of the 70's and beginning of the 80's when punk was in fashion. I remember standing outside this club in San Francisco with my mohawk standing tall and all the accoutrements that I felt should go with my look at the time. My buddies and I were talking about how no one accepted our music, didn't understand what we were about, etc etc. Typical teenage shit. When these guys walk by wearing iron maiden and ozzy t's and my pals start ripping on them and heavy metal music. That moment was a big eye opener for my young mind. Here we were just seconds ago bitching about acceptance and these guys start dumping on them for heavy metal. That was the beginning of the end of my punk period. Why do people feel the need to put each other down? Their unwillingness to accept anything that doesn't fit or conform to their idea of whats right wrong or acceptable has befuddled me all my life. All of what we like in music is someone's taking in of some form of music, or forms, and spitting it back out. We wouldn't have all the great stuff we love. But people, players in particular, are generally insecure about their capabilities and therefore rip the others to pump themselves up. But on the flip side of that I have met some great players who were kind and humble and mentored me. There are good folks out there it just seems like they are getting scarcer and scarcer.

Did I really have to scroll this far down to find someone who can actually see this? Of course it's an act, if you can't see it from the live performances, it's blatantly obvious in the TV appearances. It's a comedy show, the video maker either failed to see the sodding obvious or used it to get organic reach for taking it at face value.

Throwing things at a man who can barely walk is pretty fucked up. If he were healthy then go for it, but he wasn't healthy. In Nazi Germany in the 1930s, they made a movie about a pianist who lost the use of her hands and eventually killed herself. So the Nazis understood the emotional pain a person would endure in this situation, but modern people throw eggs. We call this progress.
