The film was made to show that there is something positively unique in everyone
He used to play in legit prog acts in the seventies, then in the nineties he resurfaced as this trashy stereotyped TV character and host of his own "rock" themed shows.
Then he literally fell off a bridge in 2001, with some people speculating it was a suicide attempt because of a arthritis diagnosis, and he's been touring bars through his shitty shredder gimmick ever since, with people routinely throwing vegetables and blunt objects to him and all.Please note that his cacophonic educational endeavors predate the bridge incident.
He surfaced again recently because he's allegedly ill and broke, and even though he's always been a living meme seeing how badly he aged and how much of a mess he is right now was pretty damn sad.

I bet that any person that had enough time and took 1 year to just practice guitar could do way better. He was delusional.

I don't agree. I do hate the way people treated him, But while his playing may have suffered, he could still hear, He knew his notes were all over the place. but he continued getting on stage in front of people. As a musician, I cannot understand someone doing that. His runs up and down the neck are what you'll see from someone whom just recently picked up the instrument. People throw stuff at him, and he continues. He went on a TV show, where he was teased, But his reaction, Laying on the floor, screaming like a baby...and he's owed an apology? no way..
He's owed respect, as he was a good musician, But in return, he has brought much of the actions from others on himself.

This was the wrong choice of words from me. Now that you mention it, when he was on the floor screaming like that it was horrible to see someone behave that way. He kinda degraded himself by doing that. I hear he kinda got a bit better these days I saw a video that wasn't that long ago, and he sounded pretty decent. Maybe things have improved with his health and behaviour, I don't know. I hope so.

First of all, he doesn't suck at all.
Second, he was really good until the accident in year 2000 or 2001 (there are still some doubts about when it happened).
So, if Richard had had the chance to continue playing guitar and improving himself, he would certainly have been one of the best guitar players.
He was fast, technically good, he played with his heart. He loved music more than himself: he knows lots of artists, albums, groups formations, guitars used by guitarists, guitarists, bassists, drummers and so on.
He didn't suck, he doesn't suck.
Although all italians knows his sad and "trashy" past, we believe Richard is one of the best.
He's special for us.
The ones who suck is you, who talks like you and who have fun by mocking an ill person.

Exactly, Richard Benson played well in his early years before getting arthritis. Sure he was no virtuoso but he clearly had a love for music and could play. After getting hit with arthritis he was pretty much forced to play this obnoxious clown show character, in order to keep making a living, which the internet and guys like StevieT made fun of. And in this final music video he proves the world wrong.
You all don't know how debilitating rheumatoid arthritis is and how difficult it is to do anything with it, let alone play guitar.

I worked with Richard Benson in 2017 even though I have known him since 1996, he is a person who has an immense musical culture! we should have done an album together but then he had a heart attack and underwent a heart operation. Today Richard is locked up in Nemi in a long-term care facility, against his will by a "legal guardian" who, in addition to managing Richard's money, also took away the house where he lived separating him from his wife Ester Esposito.
Please share more information. How did you exactly work with him? Who's his guardian? Has he not seen Ester in a long time?
@@LMC-xz6qh I worked with Richard Benson in Rome, when he was in the south of the city. we should have made an album together and I had already written the material and I was also working with Ester to relaunch Richard's career. Unfortunately he had a heart attack and they operated on his heart. Social services through a judge appointed a person to manage Richard's estate (the house he lived in was no longer his because he had sold it and was due to leave it in April 2017). So Richard's only assets consisted of two electric guitars, two large concert amplifiers and his and Esther's clothes. Ester Esposito, on the other hand, was hospitalized in a psychiatric clinic, because she suffers from schizophrenia, the ones from the court have separated them but I cannot write the motivation here. They have seen each other a few times for special occasions through Richard's fans who have organized rallies. I have currently collaborated with the "Benson Brigades" a group of guys who are working on relaunching Richard's image. I provided a lot of unpublished material I had by Richard from the 90's and early 2000's. don't know who the person who managed Richard's assets is, also because in the Italian courts, if you are not a lawyer you cannot request the files of a case or a lawsuit. To relaunch Richard's career, I organized a special appearance at the Gianna Chilla '(Killa) concert in Rome at the Brittway Garage and it was a real success. many fans recognized him and took a selfie with Richard.

I've been following him for a couple years, longer than all the people who found out about him through Stevie T. I don't speak italian but I've managed to understand a little bit about his story. I know how bad the italian courts are, I'm in Argentina and it's similar here. How did you plan on relaunching his career?
@@LMC-xz6qh My plan to relaunch Richard's career was to take him around the most important clubs in Rome and this worked. Also the idea was to make an album together and make a vinyl copy of it and put it up for auction and the proceeds would go to him. I also did some radio broadcasts dedicated to him. Richard was also a guest on tv by Barbara D'urso on channel 5 in Italy. in March 2017 Richard had also made contact with John Macaluso and they were supposed to form a trio and do some concerts, but unfortunately he had a heart attack. I brought them food to Richard and Ester, I gave them some money to live on, but when the court had them locked up (he in Nemi in a long-term hospital and she in a psychiatric clinic in Tor Cerbara) in two cities distant from that moment I have not been able to hear from them anymore. Ester called me a couple of times asking for help but I have no way of getting them out of there.

That's what I was thinking. When I watched the video about his life. I was thinking that it was another funny video about a bad guitarist. But when it started playing his good songs I was in complete shock. I saw just how good he is and realized stevie was just part of the problem with ridiculing this guy that obviously can play and it's not his fault that he is struggling at it now.

You mean anyone who disagrees with you is a hater or deaf? That's incredible stupid . I don't hate the man and I'm not deaf, but I can put my hand on my heart and say this guy was a terrible player. He sounds like every teenager who gets their first guitar and amp and pretends to shred in their room with the gain too high. His personal issues aside, even when he was healthy he was awful. He always tried to play faster than he could, his picking hand was out of sync with his fretting hand, he constantly missed notes and didn't fret half the ones he didn't and he had no sense of melody at all. He wanted to be Steve Vai but just didn't have the talent or ear. Personally I feel for the guy but for people to say that a terrible disease took his god given talent away is just ridiculous. Yes a disease did hinder his playing incredibly, but he never had that god given talent to begin with. The fact that he kept playing publically and making records when he could barely hold a pick tells me he was either incredibly arrogant, thinking he could still sell music when he couldn't Play, or he has some kind of undiagnosed mental illness that he genuinely though he could still play. He obviously had noone lose to him to tell him to stop or even make him stop, by telling every club or venue not to let him play there. No it's not nice to make fun of a guy who's trying to live out his dream, but there's this thing called reality, and being asked to suspend that, by pretending we're all having a good time and the guy on front of us is playing like Beethoven is just silly. No I wouldn't throw eggs at the guy etc, that's just way overboard, but wtf did he expect? It's just a sad story all around and I'm actually somewhat relieved that they guy passed away because it must have been hell to live that way. This is what happens when you award everyone for participating. We're gonna have a hell of alot more people like this in the future because everyone is told that they're amazing and talented today when they're not.

Guys i give to you a bad news. Unfortunately today 10 May 2022 Richard Benson is dead, it's not a joke, I would like it to be but unfortunately it is not. I have worked with him, and I am devastated by this news .
I'm glad I further researched into this guy after Steve's video. I first thought he's legitimately bad and wanted to see his "bad" playing...But man, it truly brings a tear to my eye, the fact he lost his ability to continue his most beloved thing to do. As a guitar player myself, it does hurt a lot knowing what happened. You were truly great buddy, just know that 👌
This guy got way more famous playing badly than he ever did playing well.
Richard was a poet and an extraordinary entertainer. He had an extraordinary musical culture.

Of Richard we have only seen what he wanted to show us. He wanted to bring his idea of the super excited metalhead in order to shock, interest the public and bring them closer to music by offering something not obvious. He purposely used the slightly out of tune guitar and a very high level of distortion because it served his message. Furthermore, it is clear that his instructional videos were not serious teaching videos but were more to impress the kids so as to bring them closer to music and guitar. In reality he was a good guitarist and very good and professional guitar teacher with an excellent knowledge of music even on a theoretical level. Then at the end of the 90's he started having health problems and losing his skills, he had a very serious accident which fortunately he survived, but from then on he was never the same.
Thank you Fil for treating the man with compassion. You always give the bands and solo artists a fair shake and never bad mouth anyone. I wish I knew you, I think we'd be good friends even if 3,000 or so miles away in the states. 👍🎼🎸🎵🎶

His only issue was that he didn't progress past shred into more tasteful music, that is more melodic and easier to play, as his condition worsened. He had a decent sense of melody, but chose mainly to focus on technical shredding.
IMO, his arthritis is likely due to his unorthodox playing style. Leo Kottke is the most amazing 12 string player I've ever seen or heard and he required surgery on his hands to correct issues stemming from his playing style and had to relearn how to play in a different way, this actually happened twice. His style is still immediately recognizable but he has evolved to be far more than he was when he first started playing.
Richard was not the worst guitarist by any means, but even back then he wasn't really picking cleanly and there are a lot of false notes and runs that basically sound like practicing scales. His parts with bending are far more interesting musically than the straight arpeggio runs. This is a common trap for many guitarists with technical ability but not much else.
@Mister Problematic Actually, I am not. Carpal syndrome can cause arthritis and vice versa. Poor posture and/or technique can cause joint damage, leading to arthritis just as easily as it can cause soft tissue damage such as carpal tunnel syndrome.

He can"t. The thing is...its not only artritist. He tried to kill himself after that artritis thing. He survived and the medic succeed on bringing him back but sadly, he wasn't himself like he used to be after that incident. Maybe half of his insanity was left on the other side.
This guy is not the standard for guitar shredders. Proper shredders, and guitarist with actual technical ability, sound way better than him.

The guy was...pretty good when he didn't try to shred. (Even through, unfortunately, most of his songs are rip offs) When he did try to shred, his playing was usually full of sloppiness, mistakes and random notes, and his picking technique was always off IMO. He has also always had timing issues as shown in Adagio in Re, where he sometimes fails to play the main theme on time. I think he reached his peak in the 80's and early-to-mid 90's. There's a instructional audio uploaded somewhere on youtube which features the best playing I've heard from Benson. Madre Tortura is a great song (quite surprised you didn't include the majestic riff that starts at 11:42) and the album on itself is pretty good if you excuse his mistakes and sloppiness.

There were times where he actually did try to shred in this video. He stopped being good at it as the 2000s rolled around and he was diagnosed with arthritis
@@Romax-pg2is He was already not a very good shredder in the late 90s. His shredding was extremely sloppy at times, as you can listen on his Madre Tortura album. Parts of it are on this video, but they left out the bad sections. If you want to listen to prime Benson, search up for "Richard benson per corde e grida audio raro". He could actually shred like a beast back in the 80s and early 90s. It's a shame we don't have any actual albums or videos from that era.

Yes, he could play before, but he wasn't that great as some said. He didn't shred as good as most of the shredders back to that time.
People always over exaggerate about someone if there was something bad happened to that person. It's neither a good react to this kind of things I think. Give someone a proper judgement is important.
Music is not about about "who the best of the best is". He's a really good guitarist and he's so passionate about music that he didn't stop even after he became ill. Losing one's talent is absolutely devastating and I can't imagine what people go through when they lose it for whatever reason. For example, I love drawing illustrations and my biggest fear is losing my left hand.

I seen a video in this guy last week on him being ‘the worst guitarist ever’ and it was really sad. You could clearly see and hear that he could play but arthritis has crippled his talent sadly. Playing is what he loves doing so it is sad that he cannot do it the way he knows he can.

It's such a sad thing to see that much talent being destroied by a disease. I wish i could 'get' his arthritis to me just for giving this guy the oportunity to shine and shred all over the globe.

Thank you for sharing this compilation... a lot of videos of these "earlier" performances were obviously re-dubbed to sound worse to further mock and confuse people.
It's still "ok" at the very best, I'm not saying I am virtuoso myself but haven't we heard plenty of stuff so much better in both aesthetic and pure motoric point of view before. Still I'd say he COULD play and no one deserves to be bullied anyway.

The story of this man is truly sad. Ive seen the Stevie T video, but never thought much about it. Until just now hearing what poor mr benson used to sound like, im ashamed to say that i was one of those who mocked him. But now my heart weeps for this man.. Still like Stevie, but i do feel bad for Mr Benson.

Surprisingly good given the videos I've seen pointing him out as the ultimate terrible guitarist - let me tell you I've heard far worse and I can give examples. People in the comments below are saying things like he wasn't as precise as some of the shredders. I hear a guy with a lot of soul in his playing and he would have been considered a guitar god in the upper echelon in the late 1970s. It's when he does try to play faster than his skill allows where we start hearing some of the discordant noisy playing that we do later. Speed was like a drug to some guitar players, seeking it above all else when the average person (read: non guitar player) is listening to the melodies and riffs. What this really shows us is that arthritis can be a terrible and debilitating thing and Benson must feel like his own body is betraying him.

I found Benson on Stevie t and been fascinated by him since watched bios and listened to albums it's sad they trow stuff at him the fire still burns in him and he refused to be put down that is a strong man and he continues cause of his passion he a old man it's like making fun and throwing shit at a grandpa I think Stevie t putting that video made him more popular than ever cause people want to see more so thank u Stevie t for showing him to me

Arthritis, this guy can't even move his fingers without feeling immense pain but he still dedicated to playing. Such passion is and dedication is rare. Much respect
Artritis..and then after that frustration, he tried to kill himself.. jumping from a bridge but he survived and was brought back by the medic. He wasnt fully himself after they brought him back.
Although is not confirmed I think he has been struggling with some kind of mental health issue. You can see this in his demeanor of the last 20 years.
Sound raw but still decent to listen. RIP Mr. Benson.
From what I see here, the guy was very good. More than what I can do.
I grew up in Italy, where Richard is basically the laughing stock of metal/I pick musicians. As young metal heads, we used to watch his TV program and laugh like crazy. We always had respect for him though, knowing his tragic story.

Okay 00:45 was pretty cool, very progressive riff given this was long ago.
Most of his slower stuff is pretty nice to listen to, and the part that starts at around 10:40 is really good in my opinion. Definitely better at shredding than me and definitely not going to forgive Stevie or anyone else who has made fun of this guitarist for a long time.

He passed away last month. He grew up being a very talented guitar player. He also played the bass guitar as well for a while. Many of us will miss him.
Anyone who has persecuted or thrown things at this man....karmas a bitch....as a guitar player just dealing with age is tough. Dealing with physical debilitation and the mental toll is another thing in it of itself.
