I can not believe. At 16:00 Moscow time I came home from the store buying the same plafond for photographing jewelry! Exactly the same, and then the video came out. XD That's funny. Thank you for the useful information and greetings from Russia!
This video is especially for you! Enjoy, greetings from Canada (-:
I really enjoy your no-nonsense videos. You get right to it and trim all the fat away. Any chance of you doing a gear video that delves a bit further into your choice of lights/diffusers/camera etc.?
Fully agree with this comment. :)
Me too! Love your videos. They are the best out there!
Great gear list on the video. "1 Light Tutorial: Studio Perfume Photography Breakdown"
Definitely have a gear video in the works, I will dive into those topics ! Cheers thanks for watching Chris
LOVE YOUR VIDEOS BROTHER! Thanks fro sharing!
Very nice of you! Thanks a ton ✔️
Dustin, your tutorials are eye opening. Especially appreciated the post-production tweaks you showed in this one. I also get a bit of a thrill at knowing there are legions of keyboard photographers that have zero reason to complain about not doing quality work because you show how it can be done with a kit lens, 50-dollar speedlights, and an IKEA lampshade.
Awesome, thanks so much! I like breaking down photos to minimal equipment, especially because I find it boils down a lot of the ideas and removes the mystic element!
Great video Dustin! I was wondering what were you using to hold the watch in place?
Good question, I have standard sticky tack at the back of the watch holding it in place
Great video, excellent pacing. The amount of information that you provide in 15 minutes is very well executed and comprehensive and is also a testament to your other content. Thank you for sharing. Cheers!
Really appreciate the sediment, especially coming from a terror movie trailers account! Cheers!
Seriously one of the best how to channels! Please keep sharing!
really kind words, thank-you! A few fun videos are on the way
Dude!!! You are a genious! Thank you for that tutorial. I’ve been working in PS all my life but never did product work. Now I will definately start doing that.
Thank you so much for your Kind words Peter!
well, as a 5 year photo student I cringe at that tutorial. This method might be easy and things, and are great for a line of products, that need to be the same, but for a real product image, the light is just to flat. 2 or 3 more flashes without softboxes and a few black pieces of cardboard, and you could make this image much better.
Yes definitely needs some more reflection on the metal to make it look shiny. Would be good to see a tutorial using some black reflectors and less diffused lighting.
I find product photography editing so interesting! I don't know why, but seeing people make a product as perfect as it can be like satisfies me.
I totally get it, I love seeing all the small technical work for that moment of the product just looking "right" !
Until the customer buys it and finds out it's garbage. The bane of every photographers existence 🤣.
The cone's mouth (the smaller opening of the cone) is reflected in the glass of the watch. What should I do to avoid that?
Love the video. And did you know that IKEA has child minding? Everyone can have fun while shopping at IKEA and when your shopping is complete stop by the cafeteria for a tasty family meal. Don't forget the member benefits. I swear I am not from IKEA either.
Which lens would yo recommend for a full frame camera and a 28 cm radius Melodi lamp?
Nice idea! After watching the video I have a question. Are you shilling for Ikea? I can't tell.
Still waiting on my $ from ikea !
At the twentieth second of the video, what are you holding ? where did you buy it ? And could you show me the link of the website that sells it ? it is great. thanks a lot
Hey there, that's the IKEA Melodi lamp shade. This is the small version, but the larger version is even better for this work -- and can be found on IKEA's website. Best of luck!
thanks a lot,,,
Voi Triều my pleasure! Make sure to subscribe (--:
Thanks for the tutorial! How did you pose the watch?
Thank Bruno! I used some tack to hold it in place at the back, making the position movable.
Thanks dear. Is possible to provide me with tripod model
Absolutely Muneer -- the tripod is a Manfrotto 290xtra. I love this thing and would definitely recommend it to anyone looking for a high-quality yet slightly lower-end of the cost spectrum tripod option! (-:
For color variants, digital colorization, I shoot the second variant, load that image, then extract the color value. Then I use the same technique in the video. I use gimp, so they have a colorize adjustment and load in that color. Surprisingly not all silvery metallics are desaturated, only chrome is. Nickel, and most common grey metals have a touch of yellow. Hue 50, sat 5. All my photos I shoot with a white balance cap for some sort of fidelity.
Great! Thanks Allen would love to see your shots: facebook.com/groups/workphlo
Great going. Thank you.
Thank-you Mohammed! I will (-:
Thank you for making these videos! I really learn a lot!
You're welcome, it's my pleasure
Brilliant video as always! Thanks.
James, cheers!
THANK YOU!!! THIS IS JUST TOOO AWESOME!
I don't like Crooked either.
VeryImportantPepe 😂
Dolby Digital
Yep
Excellent as always
It was really fun to shoot, glad you tuned it.
Your how-to videos are always creative and witty. Fun and educational. I don't know whether you want to develop a full-time career out of product photography, but I have a feeling that you will be very successful at ANYTHING you do. BTW, what would you do if Broncolor decided to dump $30,000 of strobe equipment on you, like they probably did with Karl Taylor. Would you still continue with your no-nonsense approach, or would you cross over to the Dark Side?
Thoroughly enjoyed your comment, thanks for writing that! I thought a long while about your Broncolor question, and I have to say it would be super tempting to sell out -- but I think I would keep rocking with minimal gear! Have a great day (-:
Dear Dustin, what would be the best diaphragm and aperture settings with a nikon d90 with a nikkor micro 40 mm AF-S lens, for product photography such as watches and jewelry?
I only use a d5100 & kits lens - so my settings are f/13 ISO100 1/200 for my max sync speed with a Yongnuo 560-III. Your settings will differ though!
Where did you buy this defusior lamp ?? I am unable to find this on Amazon or flipkart.. please help me because this is a compact and very easy to use product.. thanks for this video too 😊👌
Try IKEA!
I'll take one of those watches.
Sold!
Dustin, you don't happen to have a Rolex on you do you?
You're my hero. You've inspired me to master product photography and Photoshop, which I believe will help out other genres of photography as well. Thank you!
Strong words, bless you! So true about the other genres
Hi sir , your video are great and helpful . Can i know that you can do garment product too ?
Thank-you, we have a few different episodes coming up
Hi Dustin, just tried to shoot with the melody but i have my camera reflected on the glass of the watch, how you avoid these reflections? Thx in advance!!
When you look perfectly down, it makes sense you will flatly reflect the dark absence of light in the melodi opening. I like adjusting my angle subtly so that it doesn't reflect the dark spot, but it is indeed tricky to maneuver it flatteringly at times. Best of luck
@@workphlo Hi, Thanks for the great tutorial... however the reflection is killing me :-) . when shooting straight down the black opening is too visible. I could try and photoshop this out, but that will take me too long. The watch has curvature (vertically) in the glass and that makes it even more difficult. Any tips.
Excellent, as always. Please keep up with the post photo work as I learn a lot from you in that area and I am currently struggling on that front.
Cheers David, I will keep expanding on our post-production work! (-:
Hey i really liked this video!
Thanks a lot for letting us know! Appreciated
How did you manage to have the watch in that position? I'm trying that type of photography but im using some metal i bended but it shows in the photos
Tac it down! Do whatever you can to get the watch staying there, without anything showing it's support if possible. Try pressing it into tac.
thank you for the effort and the sharing. thumbs up.
No problem thank you good sir
You are doing so well. When you are old enough you should become a photographer.
That's a wonderful idea
Thank you so much for this detailed tutorial! You gave more than what your title said! So Appreciate it!
Melodi👌🏼👌🏼

Hey buddy, thanks for the video you are really good! anyway i have notice some "mistakes" but i believe there were just cos you did the editing in rush for the video. . I know some shortcut that you hadn't (or hans't??) use for the selection. I try to explain me better. When you do a selection with the pen, instead to go to "Path" click on it and blablabla you gotta just click CMD+D and you got the selection. Then it was useless to clip the mask in order to rotate the clock you could just move the center of the transform selection. I don't know if you understand me as my english it's not that good and if i sound rude i apologize it wasn't on purpose, i like your video and i like to help you as you are helping me. If you don't understand what im saying text me i'll try to explain again. Cheers.
You are awesome! Thank you for all your hard work!
vadimyakus THANK YOU! 📸
Please, enable closed captions! :)
Whoops, didn't realized they were disabled... thank-you!
Hey, so I think I enabled them -- you mean enable permission for users to contribute? Or enable the auto-english cc?
Yes! Both are great! Spanish subtitles are coming...
You rock! Thanks!
You produced great content over a long period of time, I don’t understand how are you not on 500k subs. Thanks for all the work you put in to this!
WoW 😍
I love this video
Would you please tell me what lens you use for this kind of photography?
this is such a cool idea!
Cheers!
Love it dude...!
Antonio Martin thank you my friend! More product photography vids on the way
👏Enjoyed, as usual great teaching. But cant help thinking nowadays a good photoshop user can easily create a nice product shot, it is less a photography thing. How do real product photographers think of such post work vs do it right in scene? Just a quick thought. 😂
Thanks for the comment! Yes, I think peoples preferences are a spectrum of in-camera vs. editing heavy -- I definitely lean a little editing heavy but try to keep it organized (-:
Thank you for sharing your knowledge! You produce some of the best educational product photography videos.
Thank you! I love product photography
Thank you so much for the video. I found so many answers to my questions, and learned a lot!
Cheers Olga
the commercial breaks suck
Wow .
Adam D, thx
How did you make the watch stand?
Dustin, what's the size of your Melodi?
Melodi is "melody" in swedish!
Makes sense! Thanks
kinda tired of the cheap DIY way of teaching. i was expecting a more industry way of thought.
