This one gives me goosebumps. The song is pure poetry. What I love about this performance is how young Bruce was, and relatively unknown. You can almost imagine what it would have been like hearing this for the first time in 1975 and thinking "Wow, there's something really special going on here!"
My favorite song since I was 14 years old(a verylongtimeago!)! Poetry is great, it's one long epic poem about being young, filled with angst, hope. desire....BRUUUCE!!!
Springsteen sang this song for years as "Wings for Wheels" before he finally wrote the chorus for the album and made it the legendary classic it has become.
It's my all time favourite Springsteen song. And he is so great in feeling how much of the lyrics the crowd knows - and use part of it as sing-along. I love it.
I have always thought that the studio version of this song did a disservice to this song by turning it into a rock song. It should have stayed with the piano, harmonica, and that voice just like this live version did. Check out his song "Rosalita", another of his early songs that is more up tempo than this, but tells a great story as well.
Amazing song - amazing performance - sounds like the Hammersmith Palais version. A song about following your dreams. The ride ain’t free. Ta for the reaction
This is the Hammersmith Odeon version, the Roxy Theater version is a little better IMO..I think the howling at the end sounds better at the Roxy. Roy Bittan is flawless as usual, he never hits a bad note..ever!
I'm only halfway through this reaction, but this is a drummed down version of this song, although beautiful! The original is much more rocking. But, love this!
Loved watching your reaction. Yes, awesome vocals and emotion. This song is top 3 for most Bruce fans. Excited to be seeing Bruce next month in KC and Tulsa! Suggestions Jungleland Rosalita The promise American Skin Land of hope and dreams 10th Ave freezeout ... and so many more
Great reaction to what is possibly my favorite song of all time - specifically when Bruce does it live and stripped down. Thank you.

Michael Palin was in the audience, so said Rolling Stone. Epic concert.

Well said!! 🙂
Was late to full Bruce. Bought the river at 14 in 1980/81.
Thunder Road was much later - but joint favourite with born to run.

My favorite song of all time. Beautiful version…but I’m partial to the versions that involve the full E Street Band.
I can definitely understand that
Nice. TY!
Try "She's the One" from the same concert. Blistering Bo Diddly beat...
