Lana’s album had significantly better songwriting than Midnights.
Taylor is too big at this point to not win a Grammy. It's pretty much given that whenever she drops, she would win AOTY no matter the competition. Like she won over TPAB ffs, compared to that, this year wasn't even surprising

There was an interview with an anon grammy voter that said they haven't respected her since her snl performance, literally admitted to writing her off for something that happened 12 years ago. They also called Pheobe Bridgers and Fiona Apple boring. And said they voted for Taylor because she had a successful year. I wouldn't be surprised if a lot of the voters have the same views. It's really sad.
I feel devastated for lana. She put everything she had in that album and got paid dust. Jack won a grammy for producing lanas album, taylor won a grammy for an album she collaborated on, and various artists inspired by her won grammys, and she was snubbed once again :(

Why do we continue to even acknowledge The Grammys exist? It's a small group of people in the music industry stroking their own egos. Look at all the artists in the Album of the Year category. They've all either worked on each other's albums or are friends.

I think it’s important to remember that the Grammys are not a Fan Award show. It’s for the industry by the industry. The people in the academy are people that work in all levels of the industry. You want a fan award show go watch the MtV or AMAs, or the People’s Choice awards

What are you trying to say, really? Sure, music is subjective. But that doesn't change the fact that the Grammys exists and they do have a rather arbitrary standard. Their purpose is to promote/honor GREAT music. Consequently, THEY are making a statement of objectivity, that the awarded works are BEST of whatever. If it's someone you're ought to criticise with the subjectivity argument, it's the Grammys, not the people poking holes in their standards.

Jay Z speech was all about that, in his opinion Grammys are too important so trying to boicott them and then watching the show on TV is stupid, artists need to keep showing up until they will get recognized. It's the usual "practical" Jay's philosophy, but I don't know about its validity

I mean one of the voters anonymously stated they have not taken Lana as an artist seriously since her SNL performance in 2012. This is the type of people voting in those award shows. Her legacy is undeniable, she doesn't need a Grammy for us to know that.
People still make retrospective evaluations (and re-appreciations) of Lana's early work. Breaking down the philosophical ideas that are amply embedded in her depiction of femininity and womanhood.

One thing I'm annoyed by in recent Grammys is that they don't show enough of the awards. I saw the whole thing, they didn't televise the best rock album, didn't do the hiphop/ rap categories... I like Trevor Noah as a person but they should've taken some of his opening "monologue" away to show some actual awards.
they did a "premiere" where they gave these awards but it was so awkward considering everyone's eyes were on the red carpet at that moment.

She drinks a lot during these award shows, so those are mostly her drunk antics. It's funny that these shows are usually very boring and long to attend so she has to be drunk to make it bearable.
One thing I do feel is her drunk antics sometimes take the attention away from the actual performers, the headlines become about Taylor Swift's drunk dancing and cheering rather than the artist who is performing (like with Olivia's Vampire performance, all the headlines are Taylor reacting to her, not her actual performance). If I was an artist who put effort in my performance I'd hate her to be in the audience.
How many more Grammy winning Female artists are going to credit Lana as a major inspiration before she gets a Grammy herself. She’ll end up becoming one of the most nominated non winners at this rate.
Literally any album on that list is better than midnights (except maybe Miley’s, one of the most forgettable albums I’ve ever heard).

Olivia Rodrigo is such an intelligent song writer. I was talking with a friend about the comparisons she gets in comparison to Taylor, and I think the difference is that Olivia has this ability to be so self-aware in her music. Her songs are very considered and as if she discussed them with her therapist before she wrote them.
"...as if she discussed them with her therapist ..." That may be the problem. Her lyrics do not come across as real and now. They sound polished and processed. Music demands raw feelings. She's once removed.

@@vp4744 Eh, I wouldn't agree with this. Her lyrics sound like someone her age is writing them. I felt the same way when I listened to SOUR. The lyrics definitely don't come across as fake because of that. Her voice is also rather theatrical compared to some of the things we hear on pop radio, which I found interesting listening to both albums. I don't really hear that much unhinged, off key screaming in pop music like we hear in something like all-american bitch, for instance. I'd say her feelings are raw and perhaps she doesn't have some elaborate way of saying them, so yeah, I'll give you that the lyrics are generally more straight forward.

I think Miley deserved Record of the Year. I personally it is just OK song but the power of the song is transcendental. Believe me, i live in Indonesia way far from US and I see people across generation and culture have been boping with Flowers. I didn’t see any kind of impact from other nominees. I was surprised that Flowers has been in people’s head until today. The dancing alone is imitated to make whatever videos outthere on social media.
People should stop caring about the grammys considering the amount that the majority of people disagree with their picks.

Victoria Monet has produced some amazing music on Jaguar II!! Not sure what you're missing fantano. Jaguar (the first) was also awesome, didn't get enough love imo. Although I will agree Caroline Polachek's album did deserve best engineered album.

Pop solo performance for Miley is totally deserving, if you take a look in the performances the nominees did live at the Grammys you will see that
Last year I felt like Bey got robbed but at the very least there was a plausible argument to be made that she lost AOTY to an underdog, this year it's so much worse. I'm not surprised that Taylor got AOTY but it's just an eye-rolling moment considering that she really doesn't need that award at all. İt means nothing to her career at this point, her trajectory going forward and the massive success she just experienced in 2023😂. Why not give it to someone who not only has a better album, but also for whom it would mean so much more like a Lana or a SZA or Olivia? But I digress🙄

The Grammys have always been based on name recognition, not quality. Most nominations have not been listened to by any of the voters.

Midnights winning AOTY was a wtf moment for me. Very weak album from Taylor. You're so spot on about that comment on Taylor writing Lana Del Rey songs lol. Lana Del Rey is one of the most influential artists of our time and its disappointing that everyone that has been inspired by her sound (including Billie) gets accolades upon accolades and she doesn't. All these award shows are nothing burgers imo, but they obviously mean so much to these artists.

For your information, Taylor sings, writes all her songs, plays a few instruments, directs some of her own music videos, is involved in music production. That's undeniable talent and her achievements are proof. It's ok to not like her music but don't deny her talent, inspiration and hard work.

Larger the pool of voters, the more average the winners get. That's how individual preferences work. Midnights is the most average of any album in Grammy's history.
As much as I love Taylor and Midnights, I really do not think she should have won AOTY especially with SZA's, Olivia Rodriguo's and Lana's albums that were better.
Midnights is better than all those albums.

As someone who is an unfortunate radio nerd I looked at the reactions to Boygenius and Paramore winning and a lot of older people were upset about the wins, claiming neither of their stuff was rock at all and how music is dead.
This is why alt radio is dead, the audience won’t allow anything that isn’t Foo Fighters
And if you wanna see my point, the once almighty LA station (which barely plays Boygenius), KROQ, posted about it and the social comments give me a headache

@@frenchcani11a oh god, it’s so weird how a lot of rockists are like that with softer or more alternative artists who blend styles like rock and pop and stuff. Especially the fact Fiona Apple got play on alternative radio in the 90’s and is considered a beloved staple, it’s a shame because as someone who does listen to more convenient ways of music I always had a fondness of radio and realized over the years the reason for its irrelevancy (I’m talking alt here since that’s my favorite) is more corporate control of what gets played and an aging audience who isn’t down with any new music unless it’s an artist they’re familiar with. Makes me sad that outside of like, KEXP and college radio there’s a lack of passion. :(

They did Lana wrong so badly. Did you know there's a tunnel under ocean Blvd was so strong, yet Taylor won because of 1989's re-release + the tour,not so much the album which, while decent to good, is not her best. I am disappointed Caroline Polachek was also snubbed. Her album was better than some of the big noms.
