  • The second dialogue for the new series that we named “Sashiko Dialogue”.
The purpose of this series is to “Deliver” the messages, and we accumulate the dialogues about Sashiko from various perspectives.
    ---------
*We realized that the Audio isn't ideal for this dialogue. We prepared the better microphone & it should be better next time. Meanwhile, I hope you enjoy the Dialogue with Subtitles.
    ---------
Occasionally, I receive hateful comments. It is sad to receive them, but I also understand this is how it works. In 2023, I received quite a “different” comment stating the completely wrong/incorrect defamation. I asked Ty if he can understand what is going on - and we decided to talk, which led us to think “why it happened” instead of “how it happened”. I find this dialogue very profound - and interesting.
The Live Streaming I talked about this.
    • Thursday Sashiko Live ...
The Post about the defamation is here:

    [Rough Summary of the Dialogue]
We discussed the importance of accepting different ideas and the challenges of understanding and communicating cultural practices, specifically in relation to Sashiko to us (as Japanese Sashiko Artisan) and Sashiko trend in English. Ty and Atsushi emphasized the need for communication, dialogue, and respectful understanding to bridge cultural gaps and better understand each other's perspectives. They also acknowledged the importance of respectful communication in the face of disagreements within the Sashiko community.

Ty seems like a really chill and open mind person! He really complements the conversation really nicely! Thanks for sharing your stories! I'd been trying to start practicing Sashiko and your videos really make me appreciate and try to understand the people behind.

Thank you for the discussion. You are kind and you care about the art and skill of Sashiko. The Internet Is all access: all views and temperaments. Personal attacks should not happen as human beings we should strive to be respectful. Be authentic to yourself and your spirit, your own heart. We have no control over others or their views. Learning is dynamic and will be ongoing, the dialogue is ongoing. Just my thought for now.

Yes, the key of this new series is "On-going". Thanks to Ty, I believe we can continue this based on Sashiko & expand it to more. Thank you for your kind words!

Mostly interested in the repair aspect of your work. The decorative part is interesting, but am mostly interested in repairing existing pieces.

The longer I live and the more experiences I have, the more I appreciate the vast presence of Dunning-Kruger effect. People who only touch a certain topic quickly consider themselves experts, or at least believe they know enough about this thing to have their own opinion, which is valid and should be listened to. It is rarely the case, as the more we learn, the more we discover how complex and nonlinear things are. I remember back when I was learning my trade, I was so quick to judge and criticize. The more I learnt and the more experience I got, the less I discarded anything. And with Sashiko, which is a vast topic, I believe it's the same. I also think that it MIGHT be a one complete answer, it is only volume-thick. It is like an answer to a question "What is biology?" You could try to answer this question by describing a plant or an animal - and in both cases you would be right, but insufficient, exactly like Atsushi claims all the Sashiko information outside Japan is. And I believe it would be much ore beneficial to try and define what, say, Hida Sashiko is, rather than what Sashiko is in general. But, at the same time, when you came across a well-rooted belief, it is quite impossible to change it and you can only accept, that there is no way of communicating with an individual who builds their worldview on a belief. Hopefully, the world is quite full of people who are curious and willing to learn new ways of thinking. Let us all be non-indifferent :-) Thank you for a beautiful and very thought-provoking discussion!

While a lot of westerners are uncomfortable with not having single true ways, or ways to just be unquestionably ‘right’, it is not a thing that they have to stay in. I was lucky enough to learn about such things by studying philosophy (and from european philsophy too, before I began to learn more eastern philosophy) but I think your discussions can help people understand this idea too. And while that mindset can be challenging and difficult to learn for some people it is actually very worth them learning to be able to sit with the idea that something you like and have worked hard to learn, can be an incomplete. I don’t know if this is encouraging or not but your points about not being able to give the ‘complete’ sashiko reminds me of ideas that I first learnt from french and german philosophers, and so I do not think it is impossible for westerners to understand and relate to your point of view. So please do not give up or be discouraged even if it may take people time and work to be comfortable with it… there will be some people who do not want to do that work but there will also be others who will come to understand in ways that not only improve their appreciation of sashiko but help them relate to the world as a whole in a different and rich way.

I agree with you, [I do not think it is impossible for Westerners to understand]. It is one-click to block some negative comments, and I sometimes just block them. However, Ty reminded me the difficulty for some to digest it. My goal is to deliver the message - not to decline others. So, yes, I will continue! Thank you.

@@SashikoStory It is important to protect yourself from the negative comments. Thank you for the work that you do. It it really helping me have a better relationship with the parts of japanese culture I have been learning before I began sashiko too... I have been learning about washoku and about bento and now I worry less that I am appropriating as long as I do not present myself as an expert on any of these things... that perhaps it is ok for me to say am doing these things but as much as I can to point people back to Japanese teachers first when I am asked about them.
I have been thinking about what you say about Japanese artisans who are not heard in the west... I hope that one day you could have conversations with some of them in Japanese on camera and provide subtitles, so that even those of us who have no Japanese or are only beginning to learn can hear their voices and read their words.

I think that people who use Sashiko as their tool to do business and make their own profit have no intention from the beginning to try to understand Sashiko or culture and story behind. If someone or something stand in front of them, they will attack. Sadly they have no respect or sensitivity for Sashiko and people who have been working hard to keep it as it has been.

I feel like I am reading what I wrote! Yes, I am there with you & that's the reason I keep sharing the stories. However, at the same time, I learned that it is important to consider how others would "digest" something difficult. My goal is for them to enjoy that something difficult to digest. So... this will be an interesting series of looking at the events (or my messages) from other perspectives.
My perspectives with honest emotion will be on Live Streaming - that won't chage at all. Thank you!!

If someone is saying that you are not respected🤷🏻‍♀️, that person is simply jealous at Atsushi san. If that someone doesn’t know the fact, that person won’t say that. Too childish, I think.

Thank you for this interesting discussion - your videos are inspiring and calming. I'm sorry you had to face horrible comments.
I do think that Ty is conflating a "Western Mindset" with an "American Mindset" (although people from all over the world can have the mindset that Ty refers to). The UK/Europe/America/Australasia are all very culturally distinct, and a lot of what you raise in these discussions are very specific to the US, such as the extensive discourse on cultural appropriation.
I like many things that come from America, but I have experienced first hand (to my shock) how dogmatic Americans can be at times - it seems to me that this is very much ingrained in their culture. Of course, not all Americans are like this!
Regardless, we should all strive to keep an open mind and to never stop learning :)
