I used to be one of those people that thought they 'd never become vegan, mostly because I perceived veganism as an extreme, irrational or even utopic idealism and a sure way to malnutrition. But after taking the time to educate myself about nutrition, what is going on in the food industry and the effect it has on Earth, not being vegan makes no sense to me anymore. And though many will argue that "eating animal products has had a huge factor in our species evolution", even if this is correct, why continue? Why help prolong the exploitation, slaughter and suffering of other beings (humans & animals) when it is not needed for your survival? Especially since science and technology have made it possible to find vegan alternatives to almost everything. Everyone on Earth is born and then dies, so how is it fair for some to live a life of suffering because of you? You don't have to love animals to respect their right to live, the same way that you don't have to like people to respect basic human rights.
DEAR FELLOW VEGANS, what I want to get across is DO NOT LOSE HOPE. HAVE FAITH IN PEOPLE. Help them become aware of the facts and conditions, but please, do not be impatient or preachy (even thought it is justified, it is what tends to keep people away from the true cause of veganism). THIS video is how we should approach non-vegans and help those that WANT to change. Many of us had a completely invalid, sugar-coated perception about the treatment of animals, the exploitation of third world farmers, the overall toll to the environment.
And yes, DEAR NON VEGANS, the world is still a cruel, unfair place and just me going vegan won't dramatically change anything, nor does it mean that from now on I won't participate in this madness in ways that I am not even aware of. But it is the most
FAIR and harmless thing I can do. And to me, that's the point of being vegan.

Sallie Andrea They're perfectly rational reasons, they're just not moral justifications. 'Rational' in this context does not require the decision to be based on anyone else's interests or even your own. Perhaps you need to re-examine the meaning of the word rational?

I am 6"1 and a big guy and have been just fine eating vegan for last 7 years. When I hear a girl who is 5 foot nothing and has far less nutritional needs than do, giggling and just saying I can't, not for me. I'm disgusted no other words for it.

wit180 Cannibalism has frequently occurred during famines throughout history. The imperative to survive overwhelms the individual's ethics. It's unavoidable.
In the Soviet Union there were times where the state had to put up posters telling people not to eat their children. This happened in Medieval sieges too. At Stalingrad in WW2 after the food supplies stopped, and they'd eaten all the horses, dogs, cats and rats...they turned to human flesh. It's naive in the extreme to think your morals are strong enough to overcome your base animal needs in a desperate situation. Thankfully, we aren't in that situation

I've been vegetarian for fifteen years. I started watching Ed's (and others') videos a couple of weeks ago and I couldn't justify continuing to eat animal products, so I stopped.
I've been reading some comments threads and, though I get it, I'm kind if dismayed that some people slate meat eaters so readily. If veganism is compassion in action, then it makes sense to embody compassion in the way we interact with all beings - or at least aim to. Thanks Ed for being an example of that.

    • @carlovondiecken8757
      @carlovondiecken8757 7 лет назад +38

unoriginalname04 They really aren't dumb, most everybody has been conditioned to believe what these people believe and I don't think that it's right (or particularly productive) to blame them for that.
I don't know about you, but before I went vegan I may have given these exact justifications for my irrational and immoral habits. I think that if we act as though being vegan is this normal thing (which it should be, dont get me wrong) and treat everybody who eats meat like a murderer (which they technically are I suppose), then we are never going to be able to change their minds.
That's why I love what Ed does in these street interviews, he treats everybody with respect and acknowledges their reasons why they eat meat, and I feel like you have to do that of you want to change somebody's mind.

My family used to raise about 5/6 hens at a time for eggs (never tried to eat them). I noticed plenty of evidence that they had emotions and could make connections. One hen in particular we raised preferred our company over the company of the other hens (she was the youngest and got picked on a lot) and would run up to us and want to be petted when she saw us. Chicks would fall asleep in my hands or lap. They were essentially our pets. Been vegan a while now and I hate the thought that farm animals can't make connections. They can, we just don't give them the chance.

I love birds I have five parrots and also have bonded with chickens and honestly logically speaking and from experience birds are far smarter both mentally and emotionally and even have true sense of humor whereas dogs are just a human product and invention who are stupid and have a slave mentality and cats are just plain stupid with a massive arrogant ego. My parrots are hilarious and actually know exactly WHEN AND HOW they can make me laugh INTENTIONALLY and can sense my mood and instantly come near me to kiss me or make me laugh where a dumbass dog or cat would just sit there waiting for me to feed it like the stupid retard it is. Chickens are no different and are equally smart yet the morons who are the majority whom are also retards eat chicken and cry for dogs being eaten because they sympathize with an animal that they share something in common with. A slave mentality and being absolutely and completely fukin retarded and ignorant with a slave mentality. "Oh boss plz don't fire me. I'm willingly here to sell my time for less than 1% of pennies on the dollar for you and will obey you and accept any abuse and cry and kill myself if you fire me. I really like the title of this video. I'm currently writing a scifi novel in which aliens eat humans (it's like a luxury meal for them in my book). I haven't finished it yet though (will take me at least a couple of months).

I liked the girl in the red sweater's perspective; I often hear the argument that its natural for us to eat meat. All though it's an appeal to nature. But no one (meat eaters) ever thinks about how unnatural conditions we keep animals in.

"I'm not strong enough to be a vegan." I wish more meat eaters would admit that. It could lead to reducing their meat consumption and possibly eventually going vegan. Developing aspirations is a good first step.

The response I sometimes use is vegans are not some superhumans with incredible self-restraint. It was much easier for me to ditch meat/dairy/eggs than sugar. I still struggle with salt. I still struggle with establishing a daily running and meditation routine. And I know vegans who struggle to quit smoking. Imagine somebody challenged you to a bet with someone that you would eat vegan for 2 weeks. What's the minimum prize you'd agree to? Chances are you could even do it just for the sake of the challenge if your friend dared you.

Every time I start talking about veganism around my grandparents (whom I live with) my grandfather mysteriously go momentarily deaf, and my grandpa suddenly has something very important to do elsewhere.
