- It's been more than a year since the government changed the iconic Penang ferry service to these passenger only boats. We used to ride on the ferries to go to Bagan Ajam or the north part of Seberang Perai with our cars, but the old ferries have been changed to these passenger boats which no longer carry vehicles. Nevertheless the new service is quite comfortable with air-conditioning, however it isn't very convenient to be without transport once we reach Butterworth, so we just took a quick round trip to and fro for the experience.
2023 UPDATE: The ferries have been changed again in August 2023. The latest ferry location is back at the original ferry terminal, near the Weld Quay Bus Terminal. Please watch the NEW video: ruclips.net/video/t-2LnLoZaE4/видео.htmlsi=xIYMSqg4DOoIwZlH
awesome video.. useful info!
Hi, the ferry has moved back to the old location since 2023 and now can carry bikes and motorcycles... Please watch the NEW video: ruclips.net/video/t-2LnLoZaE4/видео.htmlsi=xIYMSqg4DOoIwZlH
The more I watch your videos I feel like buying a ticket to fly home after more than 40 years being away.😪

Basically the new ferry has space and racks for luggage inside. Just remember to board the ferry at the terminal where the original ferries were at Weld Quay. It is just next to the Weld Quay bus terminal. Let me know if you need more directions! The Google map location is also in the description f the new video. Hope this helps.
thank you so much for the info! i would have headed to swettenham pier for ferry if i havent asked you :D thanks for the new video too! @@pishedbloke
@@shiauthungwong3021 so glad I updated you in time. I pinned a new message to inform other viewers of the updates too! I think the ferry tickets also increased with the latest ferry.
So cute of you bring the kid to get the ferry experience
Thanks... Sometimes we have an hour or two to try new things. It was the first time for me too actually! 😁
I used to commute from Penang to Butterworth when I was working at Butterworth RMAF Air Station. Used the car ferries and really miss that commute when I am stuck on the freeway. At least on the ferry when stopped in the car the view was much better.
Yes I used to skip the bridge sometimes and drive to the ferry terminal home because I live on the north side of the island. 15 minute ride with less traffic (sometimes! 😂).
Tq 😍 definitely gonna bring my kids for their first ferry ride
Don't forget to bring their MyKid so they can get FREE tickets! :)
@@pishedbloke Tq 🤩
Doesn't seem seniors friendly at all. Miss those ferries which I used to travel for 35+ years. Anyway, I have no guts to travel on these speedboats.
These speed boats belongs travelling to long distances like Langkawi. Totally a unwise decision to temper Penang ferry and replace it with a speedboat and two different boats for bike and pedestrians and removed for cars. Thank goodness they now bring back the old ferry. Which is Penang's signature
thank u for the video, very good sharing :)
Possible to refurbish the ferry to the tourist sight seeing vessel or beach front restaurant?
Yeah I thought there was some plan to do that but looks like nobody is going ahead with the project 😣
@@pishedbloke Honestly speaking, current CM really not suitable for the position. Even maintain the standard quo for Penang. It's been a long time Penang has come out a good direction and development plan.
Example like the wall painting, it's attract a lot of tourists to Penang. It's a great success. Now almost all of town will have a similar place.😅😅 What's your next plan? How are you able to compete with other? The painting is damaged but no one care. You can't even preserve your current one.
@@panglimahitam8001 aiyoh I haven't seen much progress last few years already. A bit lah but slowly
@@pishedbloke The best time to do improvements is past 2 years during pandemic. Now, loss of the daily income, inconvenience to tourists and residents, higher costs due to inflation.
@@panglimahitam8001 very true, Inflation is here, sigh 😕
That not egg, it is buah pinang.
Hahahaha you are right!!! Luckily I didn't say it is an avocado! :)
Nice to see your family and you riding the penang ferry.
Thank you for sharing!! 😄
Hi, I am planning to travel to Penang around mid September and I was wondering if there is easy public transportation access, especially in Georgetown?
There are free and fared bus services around Georgetown. You can look at the Rapid Penang website: myrapid.com.my/bus-train/rapid-penang/rapid-pg-bus/
The CAT bus is free if I am not mistaken, it loops around Komtar to Weld Quay. The other buses are longer routes and you can ask at Komtar which bus to take to your destination.
@@pishedbloke Thank you for ur help
Where and how to buy the ticket?
You only need tickets on the Butterworth side. Free from the island to mainland. The ticket counter is before the entrance to the waiting area.
Hi .. It's finally the times come... We'll travel to Penang... Do you have any recommendation where to have our lunch ? Better somewhere near the swettenham pier.. coz will take a ferry to Butterworth
There are air-conditioned restaurants at Butterworth when you arrive. But if you are having lunch in Penang there are lots of good places within walking distance depending on what you like to eat.
Padang Kota Mee Sotong Hameed (spicy Mee mamak), Bishop Street has a few good restaurants for Nyonya (Auntie Gaik Lean's), kopitiam (Toh Soon Cafe) and even French food (2 Frenchies). Merlin Nasi Kandar is also around the same area. Sri Weld food court is also there serving good beef noodles and famous nasi lemak.
Thank you for sharing. My wife and I have planned to stay on the island for couple of nights in mid-July during our holiday from Melbourne. Good to see where to go to get the ferry. Do you buy ticket at counter or online?
Hi!!! Hope you will enjoy your stay! You don't need a ticket to take the ferry from the island to Butterworth, on the way back there is a counter to get tickets. If you are Malaysian just show them your Identity Card and it is free, otherwise it is about RM1.20 (I think!) to come back to the island. The ferries depart every 30 minutes so you can time your arrivals. ☺️
Hi .. not quite familiar Penang city... So from Penang Airport... I need to take bus to the city and take ferry to Butterworth isn't ?
@@chuastella1213 hi, are you planning to go to Butterworth from the airport?
@@pishedbloke yes.. exactly... What is the simplest route should I follow to reach Butterworth..
@@chuastella1213 of course the easiest is to take the Rapid Bus from the airport to Weld Quay. The bus number is 401E, it stops at Penang International Airport, then on to Balik Pulau then back to Georgetown, it is quite a ride, but you may find it interesting to travel around the island. Tell the driver you want to drop off near Swettenham pier to take the ferry to Butterworth. :)
Hallo sir, how long time penang to butterworth? How much payment ticket ? Cause i am in penang now and this is first time ! I wanna try lah!
Hi the ferry ride is only 10 minutes, however the ferry only comes once every 30 minutes. You don't have to pay anything to ride from the island to Butterworth, but coming back I believe it is RM1.20 for foreigners and free for Malaysians. 👍
is the ferry open for 24 hours?
No it starts around 6.30am till 9pm I think. Please check the schedule here: www.penangport.com.my/services/ferry-services
@@pishedbloke Thank you for your response

Just to the mainland and back. Just for fun
