    The new Penang ferry service was opened on the 7th of August 2023, so we decided to try it out the next morning... but before that we had to eat breakfast! Parked the car at Church Street (Lebuh Gereja) and walked to Sri Weld Foodcourt for their Michelin Star nasi lemak and beef noodles.
    The new ferry can carry pedestrians as well as motorcycles, bikes and even trishaws! Good experience for my daughter and I, we will try riding our bicycles there soon!

    I can still remember taking the old penang ferries. The service cost only 40 or 60 cents back then. While in the ferry, i enjoyed eating nova bakery bun or simply standing near the railing watching the waters below, the bridge, the sunset, etc. That's 28 yrs ago!

      I made an effort to take the old ferry with my family for the last time before it was decommissioned Such a sad feeling we lost the iconic ferries. I also used to go to Butterworth more often, now we go mostly to Seberang Perai only. Jalan Bagan Luar is also less busy now unlike those days when it was bustling..

    Penang folks lucky to have upgraded ferry services. Transfer of bicycles too. Hope fee is reasonable.

      I think it is quite efficient, only 4 ferries operating now, 1 jetty on each side, the ferries arrive every 20 minutes. I don't think the tickets will increase in price.

      hahahaha nasi lemak dia extra pedas, kalau nak kurang pedas pun boleh mintak dorang buat. Mee goreng kat sini pun OK, tapi kalau rajin boleh jalan pergi try Mee Goreng Sotong Pata kat Padang Kota. Nasi kandar Merlin dan pasembor Maybank pun berdekatan!

    To reduce spiciness, you may want to drink warm milk, milk based drinks or eat more cheese to offset. Haha.
    As for the nasi lemak, ya, theirs is quite spicy. You may want to check out another nasi lemak stall at Macalister Signature food court. Be prepared for long queue during peak hours in the morning. :)

      I actually was having a kopi peng with my nasi lemak... it intensified the heat on my tongue after sipping! I took some of my daughter's hot soup and the fire was put out! I think anything hot or warm will dissolve the chili oils from the tongue better than a cold drink.
      Yes the Air Asia nasi lemak? Also good and spicy! 😀

    Your Penang Hokkien English strikes me most. Carefree narrative is good.
    Just a typical Penangite. Natural.
    After 30 years of national language policy, people still speak Hokkien English at home. Voluntarily giving up their mother tongue.
    In Singapore, they don’t have Chinese primary schools, in Malaysia it’s practised in the constitution. Yet, kids are taught Hokkien English, then generation and then generations of ‘British heritage’.
    We ate frequently at the foodcourt during a month’s stay in June. Sold-out by noon.

    • @pishedbloke
      @pishedbloke  Год назад

      Thanks so much! Yes, our Hokkien language is dying out unfortunately, the younger generation prefer to speak Mandarin and English nowadays. I think it's sad. I really love watching Jack Neo's old movies like Money Not Enough where they speak a lot of Hokkien. There are differences in Singaporean Hokkien and Penang's, but I learned it too after staying there for 7 years. 😀

    Breakfast looks simple and good. For basic nasi lemak it’s abit pricy but worth it if it’s good.

      I was quite full after eating 2 packs, it was quite pedas but definitely quite good. Have been eating this nasi lemak from time to time for many years.

      @@pishedbloke It’s not easy to get a good basic Nasi lemak. Rice must separated with santan, freshly fried Ikan bills and groundnuts. The sambal is also key.

    • @pishedbloke
      @pishedbloke  Год назад

      @@yinyongchew6719 hahaha ya agree!!! My favourite here is the bilis telur and the sotong versions which I ordered. I also prefer this type of "pyramid" nasi lemak than the plated versions with curry.

    Just seen your video. I was there March 2023 and had to take the old passenger only ferry which was soo bad for seating. This new one I’m looking forward to taking in November this year. Do you know how much the travel is now? It was $1.20RM previously

    • @pishedbloke
      @pishedbloke  Год назад +1

      It was free till September, but I do believe there is no increase in the prices. Will have to check how much extra riding a bike or motorcycle is too. Also I do hope they open an extra docking bay on each side as there was only one operating when I rode the ferry.

      @@pishedbloke I bet this caused a little chaos on the Penang island side, as I know it’s already very congested in Penang.
      I can’t wait to come back to Penang. It’s like my second home.

    Any convenient car park around the jetty?
    I plan to bring my grandmother to ride this new ferry but it may be difficult for her to walk long distance ...

    • @pishedbloke
      @pishedbloke  Год назад

      I would suggest to drive in to the bus station and let her out along the walkway with the shops with someone helping her to walk a shorter distance to the entrance. Then you can drive and park somewhere along Victoria Street, Gat Lebuh Cina or Beach Street for parking. The nearest public car park is before the entrance for motorcycles to the ferry terminal, but spaces are limited, and your grandma will still need to walk a few hundred meters from that carpark.

      I don't think so, English usage is much higher now, especially in cities like KL and Penang
